After the stock market crash in 1929, times were tough and moral was low. Coca Cola created a marketing campaign with the slogan, “The pause that refreshes”. It became more than a simple tagline but a cultural catchphrase. It served as a reminder to take a moment, to pause, and to enjoy a refreshing break and drink Coke of course! In this episode, Genny spoke about the importance of taking a pause; of taking a moment to consider whether you need to make changes in your life or to consider a new direction. She spoke about considering the pros and cons of a decision but then listening to your body as to whether it's the right decision or not.Genny shared a poem by Tanner Olson entitled, “This is not the End” that spoke to her about this topic, especially these words, “So, before you move onto the next thing, pause. Sit with what is. Just for a moment.” She also shared that she is taking a pause from the podcast for now. She mentioned needing to devote some time to a few projects that need her attention. But she also mentioned wanting to be available for the birth of her grandson; of wanting more time with her granddaughter Leni; and just taking some time.If you would like to sponsor the podcast, please email coffeewithgennyb@gmail.com. She thought about whether we should offer thanks every day, perhaps in the form of affirmations of gratitude or writing down things that we are grateful for each day.She shared the story of how she asks her students at the University of Winnipeg PACE to share a rose (one thing they are grateful for that day) and a thorn (one challenge that the are experiencing that day). Her friend Natalie Suppes introduced her to that concept a few years ago.Sometimes, you need to stop and smell the roses, and appreciate the beauty and wonder in your life; and be mindful of the thorns and try to minimize the discomfort in your life.Follow Genny on Instagram at @coffeewithgennybIf you like this episode, buy Genny a coffee at https://www.buymeacoffee.com/coffeewithgennySee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

You can find that saying on the home page of the Beauty Bark website. In this episode, Genny spoke with Shelby Olson, co-owner (along with her partner Evgeny Gotfrid) of Beauty Bark. It's a local Winnipeg company that produces Canada's first naturally sweetened chocolate bark made with organic cacao and organic mushroom extracts.Shelby shared the story of how and why they created Beauty Bark. She always loved chocolate but found that eating most of the chocolate available in the stores started to have an adverse effect on her system, affecting the inside and outside of her body, especially during certain times of the month. She knew there had to be a healthier product out there but when she couldn't find it, she decided to create one for herself. After experimenting with different ingredients, she and Evgeny created a chocolate that contains no refined sugar and is sweetened with the purest maple syrup. They also added functional mushroom extracts (known for their incredible health benefits), selecting Chaga and Tremella, two powerful mushrooms known for their immune-boosting, digestion-improving, and skin-benefiting properties. Tremella is also known as the "beauty mushroom" for its anti-aging properties in addition to its skin benefits. That inspired them to call their product "Beauty Bark".As well, they wanted a guilt-free chocolate that not only tastes delicious and promotes overall health and well-being but also one that you can feel good about.https://www.beautybark.ca/https://www.instagram.com/_beauty_bark/ Follow Genny on Instagram at @coffeewithgennybIf you like this episode, buy Genny a coffee at https://www.buymeacoffee.com/coffeewithgennySee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

A chartered professional accountant and partnerships manager with Gustin Quon, he discovered his passion for coffee on a road trip driving a school friend to Victoria. Along the way, they stopped in Calgary and stayed at an Airbnb. The next morning, the owner took them to her favourite coffee shop, which was Phil & Sebastian, located in downtown Calgary. It was the first time Matthew had coffee that was “made with intention” and that was “pretty special”, which inspired him to want to know more about “this black bean water soup that we call coffee.”After passing his CPA exam, he wanted to learn more about the roasting process so he took a course at Mill City Roasters in Minneapolis. When you meet someone for the first time, you want to know who they are. So, your first questions might be, “So, tell me about yourself.” To which you might respond by telling them what you do for a living, share that you're married and/or have kids and/or have grandchildren, and perhaps your hobbies. They might ask further questions or ask to clarify something, and this could go on talking about different aspects of who you are.In episode 111, Genny shared that this is not really all of who you are. Because there is more to you than what you present to the world; what they see. This info you share is great to know, and it helps others understand who you are. But if you want to know more about yourself; and learn about what drives you, why you act a certain way, why you respond in a certain way, and why some things come so naturally to you, Genny shared there are different modalities, programs, and tests that will give you a better understanding of who you are.She mentioned Astrology, the Enneagram, Myers-Briggs and the 16 Personalities, Human Design, and Clifton Strengths, and proceeded to share what she learned about herself.Genny stressed that most of the info you find in a few of these modalities are more generic; that could apply to basically anyone. However, with Human Design and Clifton Strengths, it is truer to who you are. “It's not you, it's me.” That's a common break-up line used by someone wishing to end a relationship. Instead of telling the other person how they feel and why they need to break up, they are showing compassion for the other person, by breaking it to them gently and taking the blame or taking responsibility for their part in the break-up.In episode 109, Genny shared why she spoke about breaking up with someone, and suggested that perhaps we should break up with that part of ourselves; the part that isn't working for us; that isn't making us happy. She shared that when we do something wrong, we can be quick to blame ourselves, to berate ourselves, and basically, be mean to ourselves. We're also quick to judge. Genny continued to say that sometimes, we not only overthink about a situation – assuming that something is wrong – but we start to ruminate, to internalize, even to project on something that we think might happen, and then we start to spiral out of control. Genny shared that she went through a similar situation and reached out to her brother Ed, who not only managed to talk her down and explain to her what was happening, but suggested that she read the book, “Self-Compassion” – The Proven Power of Being Kind to Yourself - by Kristin Neff. Those moments that brought a smile to your face when you thought about them. She shared an example of enjoying a delicious meal and looking forward to dessert and coffee, only to be disappointed by a less than delicious cup of coffee. And unfortunately, that cup of coffee is all she would remember from that dinner. It's the follow-through, the attention to all the little things that make the difference. It can be something as simple as a phone call to a friend to say, “Hi, just thinking about you” or smiling at a stranger. It's paying for the order for the car behind you in the drive thru or paying a compliment to someone. She spoke about the journey, and what she's learned about herself, how she's grown as a podcaster, and what she's learned from all the amazing people she's interviewed. As mentioned in episode 52, the idea for the podcast (and for the Coffee with Genny B business) was conceptualized because of a conversation she had with Linda Drosdowech during a coaching session. A pattern is defined as a form or model proposed for imitation or something designed or used as model for making things.Patterns can be found is all parts of our life: in nature, in music, in art, in literature, and even in outer space.Patterns provide a sense of order in what might otherwise appear chaotic. Being able to identify recurring patterns allow us to make educated guesses and helps us develop important skills of critical thinking and logic.Finding patterns is important as problems are easier to solve when they share patterns, because we can use the same problem-solving solution wherever the pattern exists. The more patterns we can find, the easier and quicker our task will be.Patterns can be found in puzzles, in cryptoquotes, in chess, and in doodling. Patterns have been used in the advancement of medicine and science.Encouraging your child to look for patterns in math, vocabulary, music and colours allows them to take notice of the world and discover new ways of learning.Patterns help us understand why things work they way they do.Follow Genny on Instagram at @coffeewithgennybIf you like this episode, buy Genny a coffee at:https://www.buymeacoffee.com/coffeewithgennySee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

It's now December and people start counting down the days until Christmas. A few of them mark off the days on their paper calendars but many use an advent calendar instead because it's a fun and entertaining (and occasionally a delicious) way to count off the days!Traditionally though, advent calendars have been religious and were first used by German Lutherans in the 19th century to acknowledge the start of the Christian season of preparation for the nativity of Christ at Christmas. Calendars were made of wood and included religious images on the outside, with bible verses inside each box.But now, they are popular for religious and non-religious people (and even those who don't celebrate Christmas)! There are many different types of calendars to choose from including chocolate, cheese, tea, wine, and even socks! And of course, there is one for coffee! In episode 77, Genny spoke about her first coffee advent calendar in 2021. It was a suggestion made by her daughter Crystal that started the process of creating that calendar, which Genny spoke about in detail. A total of 18 local coffee roasters participated in the calendar, with a few roasters filling more than one “day” for a total of 25 days of coffee! It prompted her to re-evaluate the process about how she could streamline the process to make it less labour intensive and more efficient.Based on her findings, she completely revamped the look and feel of the calendar for 2022. This year, she included 24 different local coffee roasters with 24 different coffees. She increased the amount of coffee per day from 14g in 2021 to 50g in 2022.Genny shared how important it was to work with and support local businesses, and would like to acknowledge and thank them for their involvement in the coffee advent calendar: Mid-West Packaging, Labels Unlimited, All Nations Print, Winnipeg U-Drive, Sturgeon Heights Community Centre, Equip Wellness Collective, Trails End Coffee, Varundeep Singh and Stephanie Robinson. She would also like to thank the following coffee roasters: Apple Blossom Farm, Black Pearl Coffee, Bricolage Coffee Roasters, Colossimo Coffee Roasters, Cornerstone Coffee, Crowded Table Coffee Roasters, De Luca's, Empty Cup Collective, Flatland Coffee Roasters, Forbidden Flavours, Garage 41 Coffee Co, Hitch and Boler Coffee Roasters, J & A Farms, Jacked Up Jill Coffee, Mugging Whales Coffee, Negash Coffee, Railway Roasters, Rhombus Coffee, Scott Creek Roastery, Stewart Coffee, Stone City Coffee Roasters, Sunstone Coffee, and Trails End Coffee.Follow Genny on Instagram at @coffeewithgennybIf you like this episode, buy Genny a coffee athttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/coffeewithgennySee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

But sometimes, that little green-eyed monster creeps in and changes everything. In episode 74, Genny spoke about growing up Catholic and attending Catechism (or Sunday School as it's called in other religions) every Saturday. Aside from the other teachings, she learned about the seven deadly sins, also known as cardinal sins, which are pride, greed, wrath, envy, lust, gluttony and sloth. In this episode, she focused on envy and its counterpart, jealousy. She explained that envy is longing or desiring something, as in being envious of your friend's good luck. Jealousy, on the other hand, is feeling threatened, protective or insecure of losing one's position or thing to someone else, as in being jealous that your friend is dating your ex-boyfriend. The two are often confused but are quite different. And envy and jealousy are among the most powerful motivations in real life and in fiction. You can find examples of both in literature, movies, and music. The green-eyed monster was coined by Shakespeare in his play, Othello, and is synonymous with jealousy, which can be a destructive emotion and may lead to anger and humiliation or worse.Follow Genny on Instagram at @coffeewithgennybIf you like this episode, buy Genny a coffee at https://www.buymeacoffee.com/coffeewithgennySee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
