Website accessibility is a necessity in an age where the internet plays a crucial role in providing information, services, and opportunities. But what does digital accessibility really mean for the user? What can your arts organisation do to improve accessibility for your audiences?  Trustee at Colchester Arts and technology accessibility advisor Catherine Turner shares her personal experiences as a disabled person trying to work with less than ideal accessible technology. Catherine is also a Web and App Accessibility Advisor, helping developers understand the human impact of technical decisions. She has been the lead consultant for Ticketsolve on their web accessibility project and has supported the system in achieving the goal of reaching the benchmarking required of WCAG 2.1/ AA compliance.  In this episode, she takes us through the evolution of digital accessibility and how arts and cultural organisations should approach website accessibility. Her key takeaway? Don't just implement accessibility for the sake of it - get real users involved. When you work with the people who will ultimately benefit from accessibility improvements you empower those groups and get an end result that works infinitely better for their needs, creating inclusive spaces for all.  —————————————-  THE ARTS AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN PODCAST Investigate new ideas and learn from your arts, culture and heritage peers! Now Mary works as a novelist. The Last of the Apple Blossom was published by Harper Collins, just a couple of weeks ago.  Young schoolteacher Catherine Turner rushes to the Huon Valley to find her family's apple orchard destroyed, her childhood home in ruins and her brother dead. Despite her father's declaration that a woman will never run the orchard, Catherine resolves to rebuild the family business. After five sons, Catherine's friend and neighbour, Annie Pearson, is overjoyed by the birth of a much longed for daughter. As Annie and her husband Dave work to repair the damage to their orchard, Dave's friend Mark pitches in, despite the fact that Annie wants him gone. Mark has moved his family to the valley to escape his life in Melbourne, but his wife has disappeared leaving chaos in her wake and their young son Charlie in Mark's care. Catherine becomes fond of Charlie, whose strange upbringing has left him shy and withdrawn. However, the growing friendship between Mark and Catherine not only scandalises the small community but threatens a secret Annie is desperate to keep hidden. Through natural disasters, personal calamities and the devastating collapse of the apple industry, Catherine, Annie and those they love battle to save their livelihoods, their families and their secrets. Mary-Lou is a fabulous supporter of Writes4Women and now a debut author guest. In this episode I talked with Catherine Turner about something we don't want to think about—our own death. I wanted to know how her new book, Create a Legacy of Love: Everything Your Loved Ones Need to Know (When you can no longer tell them), might give people some peace of mind as they think about the inevitable, even if it's far off. I also wanted to ask her about her own resilience after she lost her baby just days before his expected delivery date, and how she felt that experience actually made her a better mother for her two subsequent children. That is a story of growth and love and perspective that I didn't anticipate. Her book serves as a guide and a workbook to organize oneself, so that when it is their turn to die, they aren't leaving their loved ones battered with questions and decisions that can fracture families who are left to grapple amongst themselves at such a highly charged time emotionally. It frames the inevitability of death with fresh perspective: an opportunity to show your family how much you care by providing them with all the answers to their questions right when they need them the most. People who stay in business and keep going as entrepreneurs are those who have a risk mentality There will always be questions and situations that are new to you so it's important to have a strong network around you. No one knows more about leveraging their business to achieve their ideal lifestyle than this our host, Catherine Turner! This episode sees Catherine delivering a very special keynote address to a select group of attendees, in which she discusses the importance of leveraging and automation, and the ways in which Catherine herself managed to achieve her own leveraged lifestyle. KEY TAKEAWAYS When we invest in property, we need to make sure that we are leveraging, outsourcing and automating to the best of our abilities, or we risk creating more work for ourselves.   The belief that you are the only person who can run your business is all too common. We need to recognise that we can’t be the best at everything in the world.   Social media is a very useful way of leveraging out the sourcing of clients. Agencies, too, are an invaluable way of handing off tasks so that you can free up your own time.   Finding out about your tenants can often lead to further success. By discovering the lifestyle patterns of guests, you can more accurately predict their future interactions with you.   Finding the right business partner is easy of your strengths and weaknesses are the same. It’s best to partner with someone who can do the things you’re not best at. That way you can cover more bases.   You don’t always need to leverage by means of a person. There are so many systems out there that can help to lighten your load, and they come far cheaper in many cases. Automation is sometimes better than outsourcing.   The systems that Catherine recommends in order to help make your business more exepdient are: Audio recordings of calls and meetings - this can make reference far easier Evernote - notes that sync between devices Lastpass - Ensures the smooth syncing and secure storage of logins and passwords, that can be easily shareable Quicktime Player - this can be used to record conversations   VA’s, especially those working abroad, can be utilised at all times of the day. Perhaps they could run elements of your business while you’re asleep, so that you can essentially operate on a twenty-four hours basis.   BEST MOMENTS   ‘Who need another day job?’ ‘It was just me, a telephone, and a laptop’ ‘For us this was all about building relationships’ ‘You don’t need to reinvent the wheel’ ’These things are working whether anyone’s working or not’ ‘When do we ever have our ducks in a row?’    VALUABLE RESOURCES The Serviced Accommodation Property Podcast Leveraged Lifestyle Podcast: www.bit.ly/itunesllpodcast Leveraged Lifestyle Community: www.bit.ly/llocfbgroup Book My Stay - www.bookmystay.co.uk Lastpass - www.lastpass.com ABOUT THE GUEST Kevin Poneskis, also known as the Property Soldier, has been a full-time property investor and mentor since 2011. We need to recognise that we can't be the best at everything in the world. It's best to partner with someone who can do the things you're not best at. That way you can cover more bases.   You don't always need to leverage by means of a person. There are so many systems out there that can help to lighten your load, and they come far cheaper in many cases. Automation is sometimes better than outsourcing.   The systems that Catherine recommends in order to help make your business more exepdient are: Audio recordings of calls and meetings - this can make reference far easier Evernote - notes that sync between devices Lastpass - Ensures the smooth syncing and secure storage of logins and passwords, that can be easily shareable Quicktime Player - this can be used to record conversations   VA's, especially those working abroad, can be utilised at all times of the day. Perhaps they could run elements of your business while you're asleep, so that you can essentially operate on a twenty-four hours basis.   BEST MOMENTS   ‘Who need another day job?' ‘It was just me, a telephone, and a laptop' ‘For us this was all about building relationships' ‘You don't need to reinvent the wheel' 'These things are working whether anyone's working or not' ‘When do we ever have our ducks in a row?'    VALUABLE RESOURCES The Serviced Accommodation Property Podcast Leveraged Lifestyle Podcast: www.bit.ly/itunesllpodcast Leveraged Lifestyle Community: www.bit.ly/llocfbgroup Book My Stay - www.bookmystay.co.uk Lastpass - www.lastpass.com ABOUT THE GUEST Catherine is host of the iTunes No.1 business podcast Leveraged Lifestyle, she is an entrepreneur, businesswoman, Inspirational Speaker, world record holder, Founder of Turner Invest and a mum of 2! How can you leverage your capital so you can reach and help more people? In this episode of the Leveraged Lifestyle Podcast, Catherine talks to Dillon Dhanecha, a trader and a philanthropist on the importance of doing both: making money and making a difference in the world. Dillon is all about serving humanity while you grow your unlimited wealth. It’s more fulfilling if we put unparalleled service to others at the core of our ultimate goal. In fact, he has been training socially-minded people grow their capital fast. Discover and be inspired today to make that difference in someone’s life. Also, Dillon Dhanecha will be a speaker at the LEVERAGED LIFESTYLE SUMMIT 2019 with your host Catherine Turner so make sure to reserve your tickets at bit.ly/llsummit2019. KEY TAKEAWAYS Dillon’s family were refugees from Uganda in the UK. His roots always remind him of the privilege he’s experiencing right now. He never forgets that there are people who still have it at worst and that even his little help will bring a big difference in their lives. Don’t allow any money problems or relationship problems question your self-worth. There will always be challenges—they are part of your learning, your development, and your success. If we allow those bits of mistakes bring imbalance, then we can never arrive to what we want to achieve. To make a dent in someone’s life, you got to have all the means necessary. Here, money plays a big role on how to reach them. Aiming to be wealthy to help other people, aside from being financially free, is very fulfilling. What does Dillon leverage inside his business? Aside from your expertise and knowledge, it’s important to be consistent—consistency is the key, especially when he was growing his trading academy. He sees to it he put out different courses, different choices for those who are interested. Dillon’s pieces of advice: Leverage your wealth as much as you can, as long as you can. Decide with your heart, execute with your brain. Do it all now, all at once, especially if it will create something sustainable. Who inspires Dillon? The global business owners who put the mission of serving other people at the centre of their business. Worst piece of advice Dillon got: not taking risks What one problem in this world would Dillon like to solve? He wants every single person in the world to have access to the first level in the Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs so everyone can possibly achieve self-actualisation. BEST MOMENTS “Leveraging capital, to do it effectively, really needs a long view.” “When you’re doing well financially, you’re on top of the world.” “It’s okay to be growing in a way that there are down periods.” “You can’t make a difference without making money and you can’t make money without making a difference.” VALUABLE RESOURCES Leveraged Lifestyle Summit: ly/llsummit2019 Africa: Inspiring and be inspired: Dillon Dhanecha at TEDxEdges | TEDx Talks YouTube Mad Millionaire Method Beginner’s Class - https://www.madmillionairemethod.com/beginnersclass Leveraged Lifestyle Podcast – 12 Top Tips to Create Your Optimal Routine | Apple | Omny | Stitcher Leveraged Lifestyle Facebook Community - ly/llocfbgroup The Very Important Virtual Assistant (VIVA) Club Facebook Group - VIVA Club ABOUT THE GUEST Dillon Dhanecha Is self-inflicted poverty an abuse of first-world privilege? Does charity really begin at home? Or does it begin with those less fortunate than you? And where does being a MAD Millionaire feature in to a more socially-just planet? If you've ever grappled with the conflict between making money or making a difference, you'll love what Dillon Dhanecha has to share! Since returning from Rwanda on mission with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), Dillon realised deep truth in his Father’s words "you can't help the poor by being poor” and in his Mother’s teachings that “privilege is a power never to be dismissed". Repeatedly giving away money that he didn't have, to people he thought needed it more than him, Dillon accrued £107,000 personal debt and was forced to return home with a bruised ego, empty wallet and heavy heart. On the long road home, he realised the choice ahead of him; continue to live in self-inflicted poverty or get strong and give strong to leave a lasting legacy. It was the right choice. In this interview, Dillon shares his personal experiences of what it takes to build a life filled to the brim with income, impact and influence. In his own words, you really can have your cake, eat it AND share it! Catherine Turner is an iTunes #1 podcast host (Leveraged Lifestyle), as well as a leading light among entrepreneurs, having established herself as a successful business woman, inspirational speaker, world record holder and also a mum of two!   In 2011, Catherine discovered that through the power of property investment, she could create the lifestyle she’d always dreamed of. By leveraging this power, she could also learn how to leverage life itself, and since then, she has been on a mission to empower others to take the steps towards their own leveraged lifestyle.   Listen as Traci talks to Catherine about her powerful story, one that has led her to success and happiness, and from which perhaps you can begin your own journey to a leveraged lifestyle.   KEY TAKEAWAYS   Catherine has built her success on leveraging time, money and the skills of the people around her, to shape her ideal life. In her own formative years, her mother, having to work to support her family, was not able to spend as much time with Catherine as she wanted to. It was this factor in Catherine’s upbringing that perhaps influenced her outlook on life, and created a determination that time with family is more important than anything else. Catherine has had mental health struggles in the past, but by confronting and recognising them, she has emerged stronger and more positive, fully aware of her own strengths, and determined to help others who may also be suffering without realising it.  One of the main fuels for Catherine’s depression was the belief that she had to do everything herself. The realisation that parts of her life could be leveraged, led to her business success. One of the most powerful tools in self-improvement is gaining a complete and honest understanding of who you are as a person. The beginnings of Catherine’s leverage lifestyle occurred when she and her husband and business partner began to employ virtual assistants. By leveraging out the lower-value tasks, such as administration, Catherine began to see her own free time increase, which she used to improve her business, and to focus on key areas and personal time. When you have other people in your business and you team, you not only are able to leverage out these lower-value tasks, but learn about new technologies, new techniques, and more efficient ways of performaing tasks that may not have previously occurred to you. One of the most important factors in moving towards a more leveraged lifestyle is allowing yourself the freedom to relinquish a sense of control over your own business. It was Catherine’s desire to learn, and to apply herself to a practice, that led her to studying property investment. It came quite suddenly, and almost without prior planning, property investment seemed to fit with Catherine’s ideals and interests due to its reputation as one of the more sound pursuits, both financially and in terms of success ratio. One of the biggest misconceptions is that you need to be rich in order to get into property, and also that it’s far too complicated an endeavour. In actual fact, determination, creativity and willingness are all that’s needed in order to begin your own property journey. Catherine’s initial goals were all centred around money and the things that money can buy. But as her journey has progressed, it has become less about the things, and more about difference it can make to her life, and how she can use her experience to inspire.  The biggest takeaway so far in business, has been discovering her own resilience, and coming to the understanding that by working through each challenge as it comes, we are actually improving ourselves each time. Catherine sees visibility as one of the main issues when it comes to women in business. Through personal development and by engaging in a course of study that focussed on public speaking, she came to realise that women’s voices, not just in business, but in all walks of life, are creative and equally as valuable as that of men, but may not suggest themselves initially when voices are called for. THis needs to be addressed and balanced, as the world is missing out on incredible insight. Thankfully, the landscape is changing.  The first steps towards a more leveraged lifestyle should begin at home. Are there any tasks you could leverage there, such as gardening or cleaning, that could give you more time? At your business, look at what you’re good at, and then think about leveraging everything else. Focus on your strengths, and allow others to focus on the lower-value tasks.   BEST MOMENTS   ‘I’m always learning, and I believe that I can always do better’   ‘There’s another way of making money that isn’t just trading your time for money’   ‘Everyone I know is touched by mental health in one way or another’   ‘One of the biggest factors in mindset coaching is learning about yourself’   ‘Sometimes you don/t realise how much you’ve been holding yourself back until you’ve got the space to open up’   ‘When you hire assistants into your business, the most common misunderstanding is that you’re going to have to do so much training with them, when often it’s the other way around!’   ‘When you take learning out of the classroom and into the real world, and begin to apply it, that’s when a new level of learning comes in’   ‘Things are simple, but they’re not always easy’   ‘Take a break, take a moment, how can we get through this?’   ‘Let’s give women a bigger voice, a better stage, and show that they are as good as men’   VALUABLE RESOURCES Women Rockin Business Podcast Traci’s Website   ABOUT THE GUEST   Catherine is an iTunes No.1 podcast host of Leveraged Lifestyle, entrepreneur, businesswoman, an Inspirational Speaker, world record holder, Co-Director of Ideal-Collective.com and a mum of 2!   Catherine quit being an employee in 2013, after working more than 50+ hours on average a week, over 3 jobs. In this episode, Catherine Turner who has built both a successful Amazon business and Serviced Accommodation portfolio is in conversation with Peter Jones a long-standing property investor, Chartered Surveyor and author who has also built a successful property portfolio. They discuss how Catherine moved from employee to successful entrepreneur and the importance of being part of a community. This episode provides a candid account of both the successes and challenges that property entrepreneurs face. If you are considering property investment and want to achieve a successfully leveraged lifestyle then you need to listen in now.   KEY TAKEAWAYS How long have you been in property? I began educating myself about property investment at the end of 2011 and I initially began my property journey with a different training company. It provided a great deal of learning for me about what I wanted from a training company and I bought my first buy to let in 2012 What was different about the training at Progressive? It is the community that makes it special. It’s the inspiration and support network that the community provides to every individual that is a part of it. It’s like having an extended family. How did you get started? The beginning stage included my mum and it was her property that was our first rental property. The plan was to earn more money from renting the property than it would cost to rent somewhere else. It was a great learning experience and the first step, but part of the learning process was understanding that we didn’t work well together as business partners. In a business partner, you need someone who is different to you, with differing strengths and weaknesses it is important that you compliment each other's skills. My new business partner was my husband and as we didn’t have potential investors or finance within our family and friends we began initially to look at rent to rent HMO’s We invested the capital from our own property and rented a property that met our needs. We used the capital to buy and develop our first HMO and to joint ventured with someone else buying and flipping properties. Your financial security is now in the properties that you have invested in rather than the property you are living in. We undertook the management of properties and that experience helped me to realise that I wanted to be a property investor, not a property manager. How important was the Mastermind Group? Being part of the mastermind group helped my business partner and husband to see that property investment was a way of obtaining financial freedom. We agreed that we wanted to get down to a 4-hour working week and have been able to achieve this. We took our ideas for life leveraging to Rob Moore, who wanted to create a course that was practical and actionable and between us we created the Life Leverage online Master class. It has helped so many people and the wide variety of people that we have had the opportunity to work with has been great. It's an online course and, if you want to get in touch, joining the Facebook group will help you to find out more.   BEST MOMENTS ‘Knowing that people have got your back is massive support and makes a real difference’ ‘It was an opportunity to dip our toes in and was a great learning experience and first step’ ‘The first one is always the biggest learning curve’ ‘I did a lot of research to ensure I was getting the best price and quality’ ‘Bringing together rent to rent and serviced accommodation was the strategy for us and the one we are now developing’   VALUABLE RESOURCES Progressive Property Podcast Leveraged Lifestyle Podcast Building a Business Using Amazon http://www.thepropertyteacher.co.uk/ Facebook Community: bit.ly/llocfbgroup     ABOUT THE GUEST Peter Jones is a Chartered Surveyor, an author and a serial buy-to-let property investor. Stop comparing yourself to others. In this episode your host, Catherine Turner discusses the simplest that can help you overcome any issues you have comparing yourself and your business to others. Learn how to focus your energy on where you're going to get the best return on your time invested, but also where you will achieve the lifestyle you want. Don't try and do everything to chase those shiny pennies. KEY TAKEAWAYS Don’t compare yourself to others. It’s something we do pretty much every day at times in our personal lives, but definitely in business. Ways and tips and tricks to deal with it. One is everyone has their own journey. Whatever it is you're doing in life, in business, every single person that you see out there on social media, at networking events, whatever it might be, just compare yourself to other businesses that are out there in your niche or area or genre that you're working on, you're always going to compare yourself, the likelihood is they've had a journey that you know nothing about, you don't understand what they've had to go through and your journey is your journey and that's the one that you're meant to take. If you're building your business alongside your day job, you're trying to build multiple businesses as well, please remember to give yourself a bit of a break as well. Use others success as motivation, inspiration, really see it as healthy competition, a way to learn and maybe something to attain. Consider, what could you be doing differently? What are they showing me as well? Know that most people are only showing the good, not necessarily the pain and challenges and problems they've had to overcome to get there to get to what you see. Finding out what they've done, either copy them or use it as research because success leaves clues. BEST MOMENTS “Your journey is your journey.” “A tree doesn't grow overnight, the day you plant the seed is not the day that you eat the fruit and the deeper the roots, the deeper and greater the fruits that you're going to get from that.” “Think about what is really going to give you that best return on investment for your time for the money you put into it.” “Success leaves clues.” “There is no better time than now to start creating your leveraged lifestyle.” VALUABLE RESOURCES Leveraged Lifestyle Facebook Community: http://bit.ly/llocfbgroup ABOUT THE HOST Catherine Turner, your host of Leveraged Lifestyle. 148 - How to Cut Your Wasted Time

Create If Writing

Confession: I'm going to talk about how to cut your wasted time in this post. As in, how you can STOP WASTING SO MUCH STINKING TIME. But I'm not great with some parts of this. I'll share exactly which ones, but I hope I'll give you some other perspectives on wasted time as well.  Last year (2018) I declared that it was the Year of the Emma Empire. I wanted to use the things I've learned over the years about marketing, email lists, and everything else to launch a fiction pen name and do amazing things. Happily, I reached my goal of having a $5k month of book sales by December 2018. (It was actually $6k in November!!) January isn't over yet, but I'm on track to blow my goal of $10k in a month of book sales out of the water already. Yes, I plan to talk more about this whole journey with you! (And yes, I'm grinning like an idiot and doing all the happy dances and completely disbelieving that I'm doing this.)  But for now, I want to focus in on how thinking about time helped me accomplish these goals. And it's probably not what you think! HOW TO CUT WASTED TIME Many people think first of time-tracking apps and the like when they think about how to identify and cut wasted time. For me, I start with a more big-picture view. It relates in some ways to another post and podcast episode where I talk about How to Cut Down on Your Business Expenses. When it comes to waste, it starts with ROI. People compare time and money, saying your time IS money. So think of it that way! Consider your time as an investment. Where are you investing AND seeing a return? Those places are where you want to continue investing and perhaps invest MORE time. As for cutting down on time, it's the flip side of that question. Where are you investing time and seeing NOTHING in return? Remember that the return doesn't just mean money. It could be that you have joy. Or more time. Here are the questions I posed in the post on cutting your business expenses with a few tweaks. Ask these questions about each recurring investment of your time:  Does it bring in money? Does it save me time or make more time? Does it bring me joy? Can I do without it? Does the amount of time spent bring forth a comparable result? These questions can help you determine the ROI for some of your activities. Because we aren't always the best judges of our time, I'll link to some great apps and ideas that members of my community suggested. WHERE TO SPEND YOUR TIME When I went to the 20Booksto50k writing conference in Vegas last fall, I kept hearing one thing again and again: double down on where you are finding success. I don't think that's the exact wording and it wasn't a theme of the conference, but it's what I heard and what I needed to hear. For my Emma Empire, I had planned to switch genres and launch a new pen name in early 2019. But seeing my income rise and then explode, I kept hearing that I needed to stick with what was working and keep my focus there. At LEAST for a little longer. In essence, I need to earn the stability and the time to shift my focus without a loss of my current trajectory. When you have something that's working well, double down. Drop what you need to drop to make that a priority. Stop chasing the butterflies and shiny objects. Stick with what works. That is very simplistic advice, but I know I need to remind myself of this. I know that it works. On a large and small scale. Thinking about this convinced me to keep writing sweet romance and not switch to YA spy novels. (Though I'm writing those in my "spare" time.) But in an even more focused way, when I realized that my billionaire books were outselling my beach novels, I shelved the other books (even ones I'd outlined) to double down on the series that was working well. And THAT'S how I'm breaking my goals into the new year. TOOLS TO IDENTIFY AND CUT WASTED TIME I confessed in the beginning that apps and the like are really not my thing. I know they are useful, but I can't make myself use them. Maybe I'll try in 2019. We'll see. But my community shared a few things that helped them focus their time. Rescue Time Roland Denzel from Eat Move Live 352 recommends this app, which helps you identify where you are spending time on your computer. He pays for the upgrade, which does fancy things like sends warnings when he has been doing time-wasting things and will allow him to block certain things to stay on task. Toggl Sarah Merchant from Work a Day Services uses this app to track how many hours she spends on tasks for herself and her clients. This one has a free and paid version as well. Atracker Community member Melody Hansen utilizes this for personal and client work to plug in where she spends her time. It helps break it down by category and sends you a report at the end of the month showing what you did where. F.lux Suzy Oakley likes F.lux, which is not a time-tracking app, but one that dims your computer screen based on the light you're in. She sets it to alert her and change the screen color when it's time to go to bed. Fresh Books When it comes to tracking time and expenses, Catherine Turner from Path to the Bestseller List uses Fresh Books to track her time, both billable and non-billable.   A non-app option I want to recommend is Amy Lynn Andrews' book, Tell Your Time. I have this bad boy for years and though it's been a while since I've read it, I love the practical and uplifting way Andrews handles this! The subtitle is How to Manage Your Schedule So You Can Live Free. That about sums it up. :) BREAKING DOWN THE STEPS When it comes to cutting your wasted time, it's a pretty simple process. Now you need to DO IT. Identify where you are actually spending time Identify the ROI of where you are spending your time (remember ROI is more than just income!) Cut out, adjust, schedule, delete, or whatever action you need to focus on the tasks that have ROI Sure, that SOUNDS simple. Now how about actually DOING the work? I'll say that this process hurts. It hurt me several times last year to set aside things like this podcast. (Which I might do again this year at some point.) I cut out A LOT of things. Some I missed. Some I didn't. Some I should cut and just am not doing it. This process doesn't always feel good. And, depending on your goals, you don't have to be so cutthroat. Maybe you have some areas where you just chill and those matter to your mental or emotional health or happiness, but might look like a waste on a time-tracker. My goals last year were laser focused and so were my cuts. If you aren't trying to reach a really tough goal, you can have a little more room for flex. Do you have particular apps or time-tracking tools to help you cut wasted time?

Welcome back to another episode of Leveraged Lifestyle with Catherine Turner. In this episode, Catherine takes you through the importance of setting deadlines and gives you five ways that to help you set hard and fast deadlines so that you can really get done what you need to, whether that's in business, in your personal life or in work. Hop in to learn about this and much more. KEY TAKEAWAYS   Five ways that you can set hard and fast deadlines. Number one is to get a version one out there right now. Don't over-think it. Don't just think I will do it by the end of the week or I’ll do it tomorrow, if you've got some content in you maybe it could be a Facebook Live, a podcast episode, maybe a blog that you've been thinking about for ages, get it written, get it recorded, get your camera out, get your phone out whatever it might be, and just do it right now.   Number two is to book something as a reward for getting the thing done. Something really nice, like a holiday, maybe travelling for a few weeks, it could be getting yourself a new piece of equipment, a nice iPad or Mac or something like that, a new phone, something that might also help within the business. Number three is set a day and then get accountable make it public. Let people know that you've got something coming whether that's a new product for your online store whether that's getting your online store set up whether that's on Amazon or Shopify.   Number four. How about rather than setting a pleasure award we set up something that's going to cause some pain. One of the ways one of my business mentors do this is when he's writing a book he will set a date and then pay for people to come in to proofread the final draft of the book. Number five is having something in place that can't be moved. Maybe an event date that's out there already booked the venue, maybe it's a book launch and you've got the launch date all set and it's all set up on Amazon. Maybe it's the launch of your products.   BEST MOMENTS “There is no better time than now to get something out there.” “When you do something nice, reward yourself.” “Have something in place that cannot now be moved because you just put too much into it.” “There is no better time than now to start creating your leverage lifestyle.” VALUABLE RESOURCES www.bit.ly/llocfbgroup ABOUT THE HOST Catherine Turner, your host of Leveraged Lifestyle Catherine has been investing in Property since 2012, with her main strategy now Serviced Accommodation which she, and now her team, have grown from 1 to 18 properties in less than 24 months. 20 Questions You Need to be Asking Yourself

Leveraged Lifestyle Podcast

Welcome back to another episode of Leveraged Lifestyle with Catherine Turner. In this episode Catherine takes you through the twenty questions that you should be asking yourself, so you can get the leveraged lifestyle you want. From understanding your personal vision to making sure you have a plan that motivates yourself, these questions are here to help you achieve your goals. Key Takeaways What is your personal vision? This can mean with regard to finances or what your week should look like but it’s personal to you. This should be a working document that you revisit every 6-12 months as things are always changing. Your idea of what is possible will get bigger. What is your business vision? Ideally, you would like this to align with your personal vision. If your personal and business vision are taking you in separate directions then they are working against each other, not with each other. Does my business plan achieve my vision? Is your plan effective. Is there achievable growth within your plan? Is there long-term market stability for your plan. This plan is there to help you achieve your vision. Are the people you spend the most time with helping me achieve this vision? It’s really important to hang out with people who are ahead of where you are, so you can leverage their experience and skills. Maybe buy into a mastermind, or change the people you hang out with most. What task do I need to prioritise? Focus on your highest income generating tasks? What would make the most difference if I got it completed first? Every 3, 6 and 12 months ask yourself the same question so you are kept on track. What tasks am I be doing that I shouldn’t be doing? Figuring out your own ‘worth per hour’ is really important so you can stop doing the low income generating tasks. If you can outsource, then that would be great. Virtual assistants are really effective for this as they paid per hour probably at a lower rate than you would pay yourself. For instance, you could have someone doing your bookkeeping. What tasks could you be automating? It’s important to figure out which systems can be automated, and which are manual like a checklist or processes. Look at all the systems that you can automate, can they interact with each other. Can you outsource to a physical person who does it for you? What tasks can you outsource? Do you have tasks that are outside of your area of enjoyment and expertise? I’m not going to learn how to build a website it would take too long for not a lot of gain. It’s a good instinct to learn everything about your business but it’s ok to outsource when it would take a long time to do so. How complete are your operating procedures? Can someone walk in and do your job by reading a manual. Are they sellable? A honed operating procedure can be a real asset which can be sold further down the line as passive income. Which processes do I need to outsource first? Which tasks can I do once and then record? Which tasks never get done but need to be done. Which tasks that take up a lot of time like admin tasks? Figure out which needs to be outsourced first. What does your team structure look like? Is your team full time or part time? At the start, it might be you doing all of the roles, but then as you grow you're able to hire more people. Think about where they are physically with you or virtually based. Is your team working efficiently and therefore effectively? Does your team have KPI’s (Key Performance Indicators) and KRAs (Key Results Areas) and are they aligned with the vision. Is there a key process for reporting back on the KPIs so you create a good feedback loop. Do you have your power team in place? These are not people you employ, but people who linked to you and are relevant to your business. Are they covering all the areas of expertise you need? What am I doing to continue learning in NET (No extra Time)? Have you identified podcasts or audiobooks to give yourself a chance to learn whilst your on the go at the gym etc. Make sure you write them down. What am I doing in my home life that I don’t like doing? Can it be outsourced? Get local recommendations for things like gardening, cleaning and dry cleaning. Use online shopping to save you some time. Catherine will be posting in the group some great sites where you can get cashback on your purchases. Have I set SMART goals to achieve my vision? Important that they are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-bound. Make sure you take action on each of these steps. Do I have the knowledge to complete all of the above? Do you have any knowledge gaps? Is there a course, mentor, mastermind you would like to attend? You might be able to leverage your stakeholders. Is everything I am now doing going to achieve the leveraged lifestyle I want? Visualising all the above and then taking action on the above is important. Is it actually creating the life that you want, not someone else from Instagram. It’s all personal to you. What is the leveraged lifestyle that you want? Am I being held to account for my actions? The easiest person to lie to is yourself. Do you need an accountability buddy, business partner, or mastermind to give you that kick. What’s going to make the biggest difference for you? Does this plan motivate and inspire you to take that action and achieve it all?  Make it visual. Anchor your vision in a song or dance move. Be really tuned into your vision which will enable you to get closer to that vision. Best Moments ‘Really important to not have a goal with no end date on.’ ‘I’m a big fan of virtual assistants’ ‘We don’t know everything, always ask for help.’ ‘Make sure its the life that you want.’ Valuable Resources Leveraged Lifestyle Community Facebook group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/551963318530196/ About the Host (and Guest) Catherine Turner, your host of Leveraged Lifestyle Catherine has been investing in Property since 2012, with her main strategy now Serviced Accommodation which she, and now her team, have grown from 1 to 18 properties in less than 24 months. Speaking From Our Hearts

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 22, 2018 70:45

In today’s episode of the Mastering Life Podcast, your host Paul Lowe interviews Catherine Turner, mum, entrepreneur and multi-business owner. They discuss the Six Human Needs of people. Be it in business or personal life, it is better to understand these needs, to be able to carry on with their mission and purpose in life. Catherine was working on three jobs and wanted a way out. She went into property and the rest is history, But what made her quit her jobs? Why did she want an alternative way of living? She has a mission and a purpose in life, Catherine discusses these in detail together with Human Needs, beliefs, values, goals, and strategies in today’s episode. KEY TAKEAWAYS Certainty. Growing up, Catherine had lots of certainty in her life.  She had consistency in schooling and friends. But you can always see where the void and the lack the lack is.  There is an uncertainty about his role as a father in her life for a long time. We all want certainty and security. Security of the people around you, the team. There is freedom when you have security. It is freedom in your mind to know that you have an option to travel, give your children the best start in life, when you are financially free, when you have a certain regular income. She grew up with a single mom. Being a single mom is the hardest job in the world. She needs some certainty in some areas. Now, she focused on that lacking part of her life. Advice to the young generation. The world is different now since we have access to almost everything because of the internet. School is antiquated. You have to go out into the world and find someone who is doing what you want to do. Where they train, what they do, what are their routines? You also have to find people who are 2 or 3 steps ahead of you because they remember where they have started. You need to find a mentor, a coach that could be invaluable. You have to seek out these people. Remember that everything is in your phone if you want it. Contact these people. Pain and Pleasure. The two great motivators in life. Pain or suffering, people will say that if I can get away from it, I will do something about it. Getting away from the pain of something is very powerful to tap into. Uncertainty and Variety. Catherine loves the idea of travel and having that variety because she didn’t really have that growing up. One because there wasn't the certainty of income for them to go on holidays and abroad. It's really interesting that sometimes it's the thing where you've had the certainty of.  But it is the kind of certainty that gave her the reason that she wanted the variety. As a business owner, it was doing something against the norm. It is uncertain to go work for yourself and to be your own boss and not to have a guaranteed wage packet coming in. But then again, she always loved that idea kind of being her own boss and doing what she wanted to do. The need for significance. Some people would say that they don’t need significance, but they do. As for Catherine, she was once a dancer on stage. On stage, there is a real buzz and thrill when you hear that instant applause and congratulations. You do love to please people, to make people smile and be happy. It makes you feel better about yourself. We all need significance. The need for love and connection. Love, connection, marriage, and partnership. It takes time. It takes work. And Catherine is really glad they’ve got time with each other. Catherine thinks that if we would say that level 3 would be what you might seem, what you might expect to be a happy loving married couple, and then actually know that there is a level 4 of having true deep communication, connection, love and yes, definitely a kind of empathy as well with each other. Just be kind to each other. It is the simple things. Shoebox. A relationship is like a shoe box. You take stuff out of the box. Then the shoe box is empty and you have nothing to give. Why don't we put stuff into it as individuals? Then you can share between you. Humans mostly say, what is in it for me? Growth. It would have been like an achievement, grades you got. But it is more than that. Catherine didn't realize how much she loves to learn. How much she wants to explore different concepts. Debate things with people. Really kind of getting into the nitty-gritty until the last few years that she understood that she loves that. She loves being able to help other people grow in areas they didn't know was possible or give them some insights and inspiration. Contribute. We are all human. We're all here to contribute something. We're all unique. We've got a unique talent or unique gift that we can share, and inspire people with. It doesn't have to be this massive great thing that this new idea that no one's ever heard of before. It can be really just simple sharing your journey, your insights, the knowledge, and experience you've gained that someone else would have never thought about before or heard about. The need for contribution. Catherine very much looks at her business at how they are contributing to others, so whether that's direct to her children or to Steve (her husband), whether that's to their team. In business, she is really clear now that why she does business is not just for her anymore. Advice and Insight. We all have a unique set of values and insights and experiences and knowledge that we can bring to this world. And we feel that if you can tap into that then you can enjoy the journey more. You will find something that is maybe a passion and interest that will pay the bills or you pay something that pays the bills and then you can concentrate on the passion or interest. And Catherine thinks that you can merge them. People think it's not possible, but she has seen that it's possible. BEST MOMENTS  "Go find the person out there who is doing what you want to do, and tap into them. If you want to be the best dancer, find the best dancer, where they train, what is their routine?" "Significance is about inspiring." “People are maybe listening to me, and they're hearing. And I can inspire them to do something.” “Frighten yourself with your own significance.” "I'm going to make mistakes. By that, I am significant, so long as we learn." "It is different when you choose to do it." Paul: “The piece of paper (from my academic journey) meant nothing. The process it put me through, that's a different story. The 10-11 year journey was worth the process.” "Try and enjoy the journey. Don't just keep ticking the boxes because there's no future in that. You might fool the outside world because you got a fancy piece of paper but that is totally irrelevant." Paul: "The great learning from me was to bring that power back into me. I'm important in this. Me... I can't give what I don't have. I can't give you a fancy piece of paper but by benefiting from the process and that confidence and that inspiration, now I got something to give. That actually changed my journey significantly." Paul quoted the Nottingham-born clothes designer Sir Paul Smith: "When I worked in the Lace Market, I was very poor. Six days a week, I worked my fingers to the bone. The seventh day what was I called my 'pure day'. That was mine. I flirt with creativity with new ideas. Nobody would put me in a box. The six days a week, I'm earning a living and surviving. The other one is mine and the rest is history…” "I've really liked to make sure that the people in the room know that I came from where they are sitting at that point. And many at a time, I may have actually been sat exactly where they are and still to this day, I believe I'm a student of things as well. I can always be learning. I can always be growing. And so, I put myself back in those seats that I'm training too as well." Paul quoted Maya Angelou's advice to Oprah Winfrey: “The reality is for you and every single one of us, we don't know what your legacy is going to be. Watch full episode here https://youtu.be/9MTVdskzjAo In this episode, I chat with Catherine who is an author, speaker, marketing consultant and entrepreneur where we talk about "THE POWER OF FEMININE!". She lives in a rural area in the Dakotas with her two teenagers and three pets, runs a marketing business and writes as often as she can. She considers her children to be her greatest accomplishment. She has traveled extensively and sees that as the best education available. Seeing a problem and finding a solution has always been a driving force for her, and was the impetus toward her starting her marketing business many years ago, as well as writing “Create A Legacy of Love”. When not writing or sticking her nose into her kids’ business, she can often be found gut-deep in conversation discussing any number of things with any number of people. The meatier the subject matter, the happier she is. She believes “Create A Legacy of Love” was given to her as an assignment directly from God. “Challenge accepted,” she said and went to work to research the subject matter. She found more than she had bargained for, as she discovered far too many families who have lost so much more than a loved one, with the passing of their family member. She feels strongly that so much pain and turmoil can be prevented with a bit of preparation. Her mission now is to educate the world in this regard. Black Card Books is her publisher. Catherine has an ability to bring unique perspectives into her writing, as seeing all things from more than one angle is a discipline she lives by. Her refreshing approach makes for easy and entertaining reading while making her points clearly and effectively. Catherine has contributed to many a newspaper and publication, sharing personal stories as well as business advice. So blessed to have connected with her and have her on my LIVE Show. In today’s episode of the Leveraged Lifestyle Podcast, Catherine helps you conquer the fear of hiring you first VA or staff member by sharing with you the simple systems and processes you can implement to grow and scale your business with the help of your very first Virtual Assistant. Whether you're hiring a virtual member or staff or a physically based member of staff there are a number of key things that you need to know and in today Catherine explains how you can face your fears of hiring and leverage and outsource those lower income generating tasks you're still stuck doing. Catherine shows you how to get working on the higher income generating tasks and start working on your business, not in your business If you’re looking to create your very own leveraged lifestyle Join the leveraged lifestyle community and find out more about the Very Important Virtual Assistant Club ‘The VIVA Club’ where you can discover exactly how to find VA’s for your business and grow your team, this episode is for you! PLUS share your share of the leveraged lifestyle podcast in the community to receive an exclusive gift from your host, Catherine Turner. KEY TAKEAWAYS The fears you might have when hiring your first VA or a staff member Will they do the tasks you've assigned as good as me? - This is natural, however, you may find your new staff member will find out a better and more innovative way to complete your task. You can use the interview process to test this. Will it take more time to train them, than If I had just done the task myself?  - Yes, initially but you can't grow your business until you outsource the lowest income generating tasks. Create system documents so that you don't have to spend all of your time training them. What if they don't work out? - You have full control so if it doesn't work out you don't have to continue to use them. If so use it as a learning experience to find the right candidate for the role next time around. What if they steal my business idea, my clients or my IP? - Put in place a clear contract of engagement (not a contract of employment) over everything, you need to build up trust with your VA or staff member and over-time you can gradually give away more logins and passwords to your business. It does take time to hire, so how do you get past that fear? - Within our VA hiring portal ‘The VIVA club’ you can learn how to systemise and automate your hiring process and ensure you find the right person for you, who can help improve your business and help you to grow and scale your business. First of all, be clear on what you’re looking for when hiring a VA and put in place KPI’s and KRI’s so you can manage expectations. Make sure you have produced onboarding documents and your software and systems are set up to train and get the most out of your new VA. BEST MOMENTS "One of the key things we would expect is for your VA's to go through some kind of tests before hiring" “If you’re not earning you’re learning” “Let go of the need to be perfect and let go of the control so that you can grow and scale your business” “Getting things done is so important in business. Speed to market and speed to communicate with your customers will help you get your business out there” “Unless you want to be a soler-preneur for life you need to outsource and to leverage” VALUABLE RESOURCES www.theviva.club  #007 Leveraged Lifestyle Podcast Building Trust with your Virtual Assistant (VA) using Technology LastPass (Encrypted Password Manager) https://screencast-o-matic.com/ https://asana.com/ Life Leverage Online Masterclass - Unlimited Success https://slack.com/ Leverage Lifestyle - Online Facebook Community ABOUT THE HOST Catherine Turner, your host of Leveraged Lifestyle, Catherine has been investing in Property since 2012, with her main strategy now Serviced Accommodation which she, and now her team, have grown from 1 to 18 properties in less than 24 months. Finally, get inspired as Catherine asks Jackie a host of quick-fire questions about life, leverage and business advice. KEY TAKEAWAYS Catherine: What does a leveraged lifestyle mean to you? Jackie: Leveraged lifestyle is about living your perfect lifestyle and being able to do that because you have leveraged your business. Jackie: We’ve gradually systemised the business, my ideal role is to sit in an overall strategic role within the business. I’m still involved heavily in the viewings and the property sourcing,  I didn’t choose property out of passion so it’s important I take as much time as possible to be strategic and ensure we are working towards the vision of the business and we are as systemised as possible. Catherine: Where do you spend most of your time in the business now? Jackie: It’s very easy to do too many things at once, so the property strategy business that sits a long Tomes Homes allows me to be creative and help others streamline their business and achieve their goals. The property strategy business is mainly consultancy works and we work with people that are just starting out or people that aren’t quite getting what they want out of their property business. Catherine: What is your favourite app or software that allows to create more leverage? Jackie: Asana, this completely revolutionised my brain and allowed me to manage all of my tasks and delegate them to other people. We also started using Slack to communicate within the team which has been a brilliant addition. Catherine: Whats a top piece of advice that you can share with the listeners? Focus, don’t try to do too many thing. Do what you do really well and don't move onto something new until you’ve got what you do working really well. Catherine: If you could solve one problem in the world what would you solve and why? Jackie: It’s around financial literacy, to teach kids growing up the skills that actually need to be successful on the financial side of their life. BEST MOMENTS “I just wanted the passive, residual income to have a better more leveraged life” “Don’t outsource the things you love about your business. A leveraged lifestyle is about doing the things you love and enjoy.” “If you're clear on your vision and values you can more easily work towards them or maintain them if you’re living the life you want.” “I like seeing problems and putting things together to solve problems” “Investing in property came as a functional facilitator to a leveraged life” “Wait for 18months - 2years to see the results of setting something up. For their senior-year class project at Park School, Rebecca Margolis and Catherine Turner examined the history of lynchings that occurred in Maryland in the 19th and 20th Centuries. Drawing on the research of Sherrilyn Iffil, among others, the students focused on five cases — three of which took place in the Baltimore area. As hate crimes escalate across the country, with nooses discovered on college campuses and in the nation's capital, Margolis and Turner provide timely perspective on a form of racial terrorism that, while most common in the South, is believed to have occurred more than 30 times in Maryland. Students of Park School history teacher Daniel Jacoby, Margolis and Turner were part of a larger group of students who have been researching Maryland lynchings for a documentary film project of Baltimore producer Will Schwarz.Links:http://www.law.umaryland.edu/about/news_details.html?news=224https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/public-safety/third-noose-in-a-week-found-in-dc-this-time-in-southeast/2017/06/03/e79fdc2a-4868-11e7-98cd-af64b4fe2dfc_story.html
