In this episode of Kaleidoscope, we discuss the latest cutting-edge health care methods used by psychologists to care for injured workers experiencing mental health challenges. Joining us is Michael Coupland, Vice President of Occupational Health at Field Trip Health. As a licensed psychologist, Michael is considered a pioneer in his field, leading the charge for the identification and utilization of non-traditional treatments.   Prior to his time at Field Trip Health, Michael was a Principal Psychologist with Integrated Medical Case Solutions, helping injured workers and others with the evaluation and treatment of chronic pain. Key Takeaways:     People have talked for decades about the problem of delayed recovery from work-related injuries due to psychosocial drivers of lost time. Up to 25% of employees fail to recover from these injuries due to PTSD and depression. PTSD presumption laws are helping to get mental health care to those who need it. Before these laws were established, it could be considered that exposure to trauma was “part of the job” for first responders or other frontline workers. Therefore, these employees had to jump through hoops to have PTSD symptoms accepted as a claim. The state of Florida is an early adopter of these presumption laws and set a precedent for others to follow. Look to embrace alternative ways of treating people to protect and save lives. Continue to keep what is right for the patient as the focus, but also recognize what is right for the patient may mean leveraging tools outside of the traditional box.   This episode is hosted by Frank Pennachio and Susan Toussaint of ReSource Pro's Growth Solutions Practice. With economic figures looking little more than tragic at the moment, Melbourne University Economics professor Neville Norman explains what businesses should watch out for in 2022, and throws in some good advice he's gleaned from working with larger enterprises. He says sound strategies for all contingencies are a wise and inexpensive exercise to undertake. And he says while we should all watch out for rising interest rates and any COVID developments, he believes a change in government at the upcoming election would make little difference to the world of business in the short term at least. Dr Mcleod and I discuss her transition into the field of psychology. She details how her work satisfies her desire and passion to educate, heal, change, and optimise the potential of individuals, groups and organisations. For her, stress is trying to do too much at once. She needs a lot to fulfill and satisfy her passion mentioned above, and as she is involved in so many organisations, she certainly has a lot going on. Samantha shares how she relates to some clients, after being a female athlete and working full time during her athletic career. Her role as a point guard gave others the opportunity to score instead of scoring herself. This sence of support and contribution to something outside of herself is now expressed through her field in psychology. Now in a world dealing with COVID-19, Samantha shares what people in the psychology field are going through during such a struggling time. The demand for psychological help has grown immensely during the lockdowns, which is such a large bourdon on the practitioners. Samantha tells how her team manage this stress and heavy workload, and how she is also expanding out to any practitioners who are on their own during the lockdown. ‘Physical activity is now proven to be the #1 factor to decrease depression and anxiety, over and above drugs and therapy together' – Dr Samantha Mcleod. https://www.linkedin.com/in/dr-samantha-mcleod-9b020739/ http://www.samcentre.com smcleod@samcentre.com.au

Do you count yourself as lucky? Do you also acknowledge how far you've come to get where you are in your business today?  At the end of the day, everything you've done comes down to much more than just a bit of luck.  Our newest PPMP episode features Director and Principal Psychologist at Mind Body Well, Janet Lowndes. She shares her own business adventure with you all, diving into the story behind her business name, her amazing team, managing your energy, and the relationships between personal and business growth and gratitude and hard work.  When looking at personal development and business growth, many business owners can feel reluctant to take the time to explore that relationship. Do you remember to slow things down once in a while? It's important to pull back and look out how far you've come personally and professionally, and how they intertwine.  Janet's views on gratitude vs. luck are certainly worth thinking about.   We should always be grateful for our opportunities, but never forget your personal drive and commitment. You know, all that blood, sweat and tears?  Another great point is to recognise that you don't have to do it all. You're not expected to. What you are expected to do as a business owner is to never stop learning.   As Janet expresses in the episode, “I've learned that I'm learning. I'm a work in progress, and I don't have to do everything myself.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Vicarious trauma, burnout, and living with the critic inside your head is supported by Heska Australia. It's time to re-imagine how you run your in-house pathology and radiography. Visit https://www.heska.com.au/products/lab-diagnostics/ to discover how. In this conversation, we explore some ideas that we're all familiar with, like how to live with those annoying self-critical voices that we all carry around inside our heads. Our guests, Rhonda Andrews and Dr Louisa Johnson also introduce us to some concepts that are brand new to us: cumulative trauma and vicarious trauma. Odds are that you'll recognise these culprits - those insidious, unexpected, sometimes small things that add up and add up and add up until they suddenly become overwhelming. But this is not a doom and gloom or fear-mongering episode. This conversation is ultimately about identifying risk factors and putting preventative actions in place to protect ourselves and our friends and colleagues. Rhonda Andrews is a psychologist with almost 3 decades of experience. She's also the Principal Psychologist and Managing Director of the Barrington Centre, which provides organisational and personal psychological services to a large number of sectors both in Australia and abroad, including government, education, legal, entertainment and emergency services. In prior episodes, I’ve talked about how to do this without “selling from the stage” (episode 59), using story structure to create compelling content (episode 57), and developing your own framework (episode 61).
