In this episode of Great Practice, Great Life®, Steve Riley explores time management and focus strategies with Shawn McNalis, an Atticus Practice Advisor and trainer with over 30 years of experience. Together, they uncover the most common time traps that prevent attorneys from reaching their full potential. They also share proven strategies for defending strategic time blocks and establishing boundaries that support professional growth. Shawn brings her wealth of knowledge from coaching thousands of lawyers and co-authoring pivotal books on time management and performance. Steve and Shawn delve into the “time starvation trap”—a common pitfall where attorneys confuse busyness with true productivity. Through the lens of The Habit Shift workshop, they reveal how ineffective time habits often go unnoticed until they become overwhelming. They share the story of Jordan, a family law attorney who used time management tools to reclaim her schedule. By protecting strategic time blocks and focusing on high-value work, Jordan boosted client development and significantly reduced stress. In another example, solo practitioner Taylor learned to combat overwork by delegating tasks, avoiding overcommitment, and conducting focused time audits. These changes gave her the bandwidth to think strategically and grow her firm. Shawn also discusses how the relentless pace of law school often carries into professional life, encouraging constant hustle over smart planning. Steve and Shawn lay out a practical roadmap for setting boundaries that promote both success and sanity. They highlight the value of time audits, client selection, and protecting strategic time like your business depends on it. Because it does! Whether you're a new attorney or a seasoned professional, this episode offers actionable strategies to improve your focus, reclaim your time, and transform both your practice and your life. In this episode, you will hear: Introduction to time management and focus strategies for attorneys, emphasizing productivity and overcoming time traps Insights from The Habit Shift workshop, focused on performance improvement through strategic time blocking and boundary-setting The “time starvation trap” and how time audits help prioritize high-value tasks, illustrated by Jordan's story Tips for managing competing priorities, including a segment on Alex, a team leader using a 90-day focus tool to align with firm partners Addressing the law firm culture of overwork, with practical guidance on task delegation and selective client intake Encouragement to intentionally design the practice and life you want through boundaries and high-impact habits Actionable advice to build self-awareness and put consistent effort into earning both success and personal fulfillment Follow and Review: We'd love for you to follow us if you haven't yet. In this episode, Mark talks with Ray Howanski, CEO of the AMTA. They talk about the origins of AMTA, the big ideas behind modeling instruction, and how the modeling community has changed over time. They talk about the plans that are ahead for AMTA, including a new website and easier ways to connect teachers to one another. They finish with talking about efforts to include data science in the modeling framework and to keep science involved in the larger discussion of data science in education. Guest Ray Howanski Ray Howanski worked for Ridley School District teaching Chemistry and Biology for 22 years and then as a Curriculum Director for the next 13 years. He worked with their science department to grow modeling instructional practices during which time they inverted the science sequence to offer a Physics - Chemistry - Biology progression. Ray is currently serving as the executive officer for AMTA. Highlights [10:35] Ray Howanski "I think that's really what modeling does. It gives teachers that really foundational piece of resources that they can then go and blossom in each of their teaching environments." [41:52] Ray Howanski "now I can improve my understanding and accept information like evidence-based thinking and the ability to change your mind. Just those things. Learning how to have a face-to-face conversation. And learn from each other. These are things I think that whether you're a science person or not, I think we would all recognize that these are things we want people in our society to be able to do." This month, Mark talks with the executive officer of the AMTA, Ray Howanski. They talk about the importance of getting at student thinking and effective student-led discussions, and the transformation that happens when students start being the scientists rather than just looking to the authority figure for the "right answers." They talk about the difference between modeling workshops and distance learning courses and the value of time spent face-to-face, especially for a teacher's first or first in-depth experience with modeling instruction. They discuss what the AMTA has been working on and what's coming soon as well as ways to get involved in the work that the AMTA is doing to improve curricular materials and set the standards for some new technology. Guests Ray Howanski Ray Howanski worked for Ridley School District teaching Chemistry and Biology for 22 years and then as a Curriculum Director for the next 13 years. He worked with their science department to grow modeling instructional practices during which time they inverted the science sequence to offer a Physics - Chemistry - Biology progression. Ray is currently serving as the executive officer for AMTA. Highlights [4:34] Ray Howanski "The one thing I'd say that I'd really emphasize and where I think is really impactful about modeling instruction is the listening. Is the learning where the student thinking is." [7:24] Ray Howanski "So when the students are all figuring out whatever it is they're looking at whatever event they're investigating, it's the evidence that speaks. It's the data that speaks." [23:22] Ray Howanski "That's why it has to be really centered around sensemaking and having the students gather information in the lab, and then work together with each other to kind of make sense of it, present it, and that's the -ing in modeling" Resources Download Transcript Ep 61 Transcript Links Get Involved! amtaexec@modelinginstruction.org

A conversation about expectation, immediate gratification, and disappointment with Elizabeth WoodsonWORSHIP INVITES US TO BRING OUR DISAPPOINTMENTS TO GODIt saddens me to think about how much we talk about Michal, David's first wife, without ever addressing the trauma that she endured throughout her life. As the youngest daughter of King Saul, she was often used as the pawn he chose to manipulate to kill David and it is evident that she was influenced by the idolatry her father practiced. When Michal helped save David's life in 1 Samuel 19, she took a household idol to distract Saul's servants and give David time to escape. However, no one ever slowed down long enough to address the pain she had, the disappointment she was navigating, and the rebellion that had begun to hide in her heart. It's hard to imagine someone reaching for a household idol today, but it may be more common than we realize.Today, we are reflecting on some of the themes in Session Two of Selah: Worship Invites You To Repentance.TODAY WE'RE REFLECTING ON GALATIANS 3:13-14 ESVChrist redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”— 14 so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith.A WOMAN YOU SHOULD KNOWToday, Ty and I get to close out this season by featuring one woman who has impacted both of us. Winter Brooke is someone who reminds me to prioritize my time with the Lord on IG so that I don't begin to idolize the algorithm or any desire for popularity. Get connected to her because she is definitely a woman you should know.MEET ELIZABETHElizabeth Woodson is a bible teacher, writer, and speaker, who is passionate about communicating the rich theological truths of Scripture. How does comfort have the potential to lead us to idolatry? What power does lament have to teach us about ourselves?Shifting to your Bible study, what recommendations do you have for the young ministry leader who is struggling to reconcile the vision God has given her with the present place she finds herself? Can you speak to our sister who is having a hard time worshiping through her disappointment today? SELAH IS OFFICIALLY AVAILABLE!Selah: A Study of 1 and 2 Samuel is still available for preorder and it is my prayer that, together, we can fall even more deeply in love with the Scriptures. In 2019 she and her husband Curtis started a small church on Zoom that wants to live the one-anothers, neighbor well, and do justice. And eat.For the 5 years prior she was Curriculum Director for the children's ministry at Willow Creek Community Church in Chicago, Illinois, where she created the framework for lessons that responds to the latest research on kids and faith formation.Meredith holds a Master of Divinity from Fuller Seminary, as well as a B.A. in Religious Studies and Spanish Language & Literature from Westmont College. We know that all sounds super churchy and slightly religious, but rest-assured, Meredith is a breath of fresh air when it comes to how to engage with our kids and their faith journeys. Her powerful message on this episode of our kids' belovedness as an image-bearer and how we subsequently approach our parenting is so healing. She also taps into the ways we need to heal as adults and parents from the fear and shame and guilt that has been poured on us from toxic power structures and fundamentalist religious systems. The biggest question that kids are actually wrestling with deep-down inside and we tackle on this episode is this one, "Is God a Safe Grownup?" Why does that question matter and what can we do about it?If you are holding onto your faith (and perhaps God or Jesus) with all your might, but don't really know what to do next with your kiddos, this podcast episode is really for you.You can find Meredith at the following:Instagram:  @meredithannemillerWebsite: meredithannemiller.com
