Cinema Blend "Every Christmas the same old debates come out to play. Was Ebenezer Scrooge really changed? Did Mrs. Deagle really deserve to die at the hands of Gremlins? Does fruitcake count as a war crime? But one of the greatest debates is over what sort of film constitutes as a “Christmas Movie,” and both Die Hard and Lethal Weapon have been put through that particular wringer one too many times. So let's settle this all with one simple equation, which if it doesn't pass muster, should settle the debate for good: If Die Hard is a Christmas movie, that means Lethal Weapon is too." I go over that whole idea. Note some may find this content confronting.
From PerthNow "Opposition Treasury spokesman Jim Chalmers slammed the $16bn figure, which is up from $1.5bn in last year's MYEFO. He said the budget update “does absolutely nothing to crack down on rorts” and ignored the issues around stagnant wages. “If anything this actually doubles down on the rorts and waste in the budget,” he said. “This is a mid-year budget update which has got lots of complacency, lots of self-congratulation but nothing in terms of a plan for wages or job insecurity or skills shortages or the other issues and challenges in our economy.” So in this show, I go over some real concerns for the Australian economy in 2022. Note some may find this content confronting.
Its been reported that, "Tens of millions of migrants may be denied COVID-19 vaccines from a global programme because some major manufacturers are worried about legal risks from harmful side effects, according to officials and internal documents from Gavi, the charity operating the programme, reviewed by Reuters. "Nearly two years into a pandemic that has already killed more than 5 million people, only about 7% of people in low-income countries have received a dose. Vaccine deliveries worldwide have been delayed by production problems, hoarding by rich countries, export restrictions and red tape. " In this video, I discuss that.. Note some may find this content confronting.
The Deni Pastrol Times wrote "Overnight, the state government agreed to six amendments after securing a vote on the bill from Mr Barton. The amendments include the creation of a cross-parliamentary committee as soon as practicable after a pandemic declaration is made, the committee can also recommend the disallowance of pandemic orders. Parliament will be able to disallow pandemic orders by an absolute majority in a joint sitting of both houses, under the changes." Will these ammendments curtail potential abuse. Honestly, as its still being worked on, I don't know. Note some may find this content confronting.
Victoria's Pandemic Powers Bill is in disarray. As Sky News reported, "Former Labor cabinet minister Adem Somyurek has remained defiant in his opposition to the controversial pandemic powers bill after the Andrews Government successfully delayed a vote in the upper house. The Labor Government moved a motion on Thursday to delay the debate to secure Premier Daniel Andrews more time to pick off only one more cross bencher after Mr Somyurek revealed he would block the legislation. With the Andrews Government now scrambling to negotiate an additional vote before Parliament sits again in two weeks, Mr Somyurek said he could not be “bought off”. “I'm probably the only MP in this place that cannot be bought off,” he told reporters on Friday. “I'm not going to stand again so nobody can buy me off.” Mr Somyurek, who successfully applied to have his suspension lifted on Wednesday after he was banned for failing to disclose his vaccination status, told the Herald Sun his intention to block passage of the bill. The president of the Victorian Bar previously slammed that new pandemic legislation (https://www.legislation.vic.gov.au/bills/public-health-and-wellbeing-amendment-pandemic-management-bill-2021) as “appalling” and claims the government “grossly misrepresented” its consultation with the barristers' peak body. Christopher Blanden, QC, said the new laws, designed to replace sweeping state of emergency powers, would give the Premier unprecedented power with little to no checks and balances. And now they are in limbo. Note some may find this content confronting.
The Age wrote "On the weekend, thousands of Victorians took to the streets furious with the proposed legislation that will ultimately deliver more accountability and scrutiny and improve a broken system. "As it stands, Victoria's chief health officer is given extraordinary powers to detain people, restrict their movement and prevent anyone from entering the state the moment a state of emergency has been declared." And from the Spectator "Civil liberties have never been Dan's strong suit as we all discovered during the darkest days of the lockdown. Now he's got the lawyers up in arms over the Bill, with calls for significant changes being made by the Victorian Bar, the Law Institute, the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission, the State Opposition and many others besides. Rich listers have even taken to paid advertising to express their anger at Andrews' idiotic play for more power." "Is it any wonder? Under the legislation, the premier (in consultation with the unelected chief health officer) would have the power to make a pandemic declaration and to extend it in three-month blocks for as long as the two of them felt it necessary. " "Additionally, the Bill gives more power to the Health Minister and would bestow on the government (read Andrews) the right to restrict movement, ban public gatherings, close businesses and issue quarantine orders without consultation. " Note some may find this content confronting.
Showgirls Bar 20 has issued an open letter to Fiona Patten. The ask, "Kill the Bill". It was said in parliament, that the president of the Victorian Bar Council, Christopher Blanden, QC, this afternoon has said this. The Andrews government's draconian pandemic legislation is so bad that Mr Blanden has said: If the Stasi had these powers, they would still be in force. The Stasi—referring to the East German secret police. He said: Once a declaration is made, the health minister is given the extraordinary power to make an order necessary to protect public health, including the power to order detention, restriction of movement ... They can be enforced and punishable if you breach them by imprisonment for an unspecified period of time, effectively at the whim of the minister ... And then they've got this bizarre system where the only way you can challenge that is by making an application for review to someone called a detention review officer ... not to the courts. hat is absolutely true. Clause 165B provides: The pandemic management order powers are as follows— ... to detain a person in a pandemic management area in accordance with a pandemic order that requires the detention of the person (including a pandemic order that requires that the detention of a person be extended). For the avoidance of doubt, clause 165BE provides: Requirement to isolate or quarantine not of itself detention So for those of you who were thinking that this is simply requiring returned travellers or the like to quarantine at home, be in no doubt: you are under arrest. These provisions relate to the arbitrary arrest of Australian citizens on their home soil. Arbitrary arrest—that is what we are talking about. That is the magnitude of these provisions. This truly is a scary time for our democracy. Note some may find this content confronting.
The Age wrote, "The president of the Victorian Bar has slammed the Andrews government's new pandemic legislation as “appalling” and claims the government “grossly misrepresented” its consultation with the barristers' peak body. "Christopher Blanden, QC, said the new laws, designed to replace sweeping state of emergency powers, would give the Premier unprecedented power with little to no checks and balances. “Stasi police would have been more than happy with the range of powers if they were given it,” Mr Blanden told The Age. “It's extraordinary.” The attack on our democracy is significant, and I go over it here. The Atlantic raised some serious questions about liberty in Australia. How long can a democracy maintain emergency restrictions and still call itself a free country? This should be a hot topic right now, given the risks to Human Rights playing out right now. The ABC ran an article going over just some of the violations, which include from the Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act 2006 (Vic): - Section 10(c) states that a person must not be subjected to medical treatment without his or her full, free, and informed consent. - Section 12 states that every person lawfully within Victoria has the right to move freely within Victoria and to enter and leave it, and has the freedom to choose where to live. - Section 13 states that a person has the right not to have his or her privacy unlawfully or arbitrarily interfered with. - Section 14 states that every person has the right to freedom of thought, conscience, religion, and belief, and that a person must not be coerced or restrained in a way that limits his or her freedom to have or adopt a religion or belief in observance or practice. What we are seeing play out right now, could very well change the nature of my community for many years to come. Surely its time for a frank and robust debate about what this future looks like. We've been told for months now that the Government follows the health advice, the science, the experts. Yet the head of the Burnet Institute said they didn't rcommend mandates, despite being named as a source for the mandates Daniel Andrews announced.. When you think about last weeks 4000 beds denials, hotel quarantine, PFAS soil dumping, and more, no wonder people have trust issues. In this episode as well, watch me fumble with the TGA website to get adverse event reports from a few types of medical procedures. Note some may find this content confronting.
In this episode I go over why I feel our politicians, Daniel Andrews in particular, has not earned our trust. As well as possible implications of thedirection we are heading in. This was highlighted recently with Mr Andrews suggesting the promise of an additional 4000 ICU beds was never made, despite video of the promise on 1 April 2020. Simply put, the powers that be have made a lot of ordinary decisions over the ast 18 months, and its the average person that pays. Note some may find this content confronting.
Monday in Melbourne saw more violence over the Jab. This time tradies protesting their unions handling of mandated vaccines. Come Friday, many are worried they will be out of work. And they are not happy. News.com.au reports that "The Victorian government has taken drastic action after a chaotic day of violent protests in Melbourne. The Victorian construction industry will be closed in locked down parts of the state for two weeks in response to a violent protest in Melbourne." I really do not see this ending well. Note some may find this content confronting.
There were two stories, if not more, that should give my country some pause for thought. Dogs that were put down due to virus concerns, and that Families separated by a border, spent Fathers Day catching up at that border. Despite that, and despite concerns from the World Health Organisation and Amensity International, Australia is going down the path of Vaccine Passports. These Apps, connected to smart phones and QR codes apparently, are the ticket to getting our (currently held to ransom) freedoms back. But I have to wonder, why should we trust our government with this, gven their not so great record with information technology. Note some may find this content confronting.
The United Kingdom's Parliament held President Joe Biden in contempt for his withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan, calling the move "catastrophic" and "shameful." Members of the UK Parliament accused Biden of "throwing us and everybody else to the fire" with his decision to withdraw. Further saying Biden was "dishonourable" to blame Afghanistan's fighting force for the Taliban's takeover. This withdrawal has been described by some as one of the worst actions by a US president since World War II. In my view there is no doubt that Biden has heralded a much more dangerous world. Note some may find this content confronting.
The Guardian wrote "What will it take for Joe Biden to admit he is disastrously wrong about Afghanistan? The US leader struck a defiant pose last week. Sounding like a slightly desperate Olympics coach, he told Afghans it was their country. If they want it, they have to fight for it. In American politics-speak, this is called tough love. Without the love. "Biden has more hands-on foreign policy experience than any president since George HW Bush. That doesn't mean he knows what he's doing. Opinion polls suggest his abrupt Afghan withdrawal has majority public support. That doesn't mean Americans will remain indifferent as the carnage and misery mount." https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/aug/15/afghanistan-will-be-seen-as-joe-bidens-defeat-and-it-may-come-back-to-haunt-him Biden has been in office for 8 months. Misery is certainly mounting. Sadly it is the people of Afghanistan that will pay the price for Joe Bidens foolery. Note some may find this content confronting.
Australia's top security agencies have shone a light on a major cyber security attack attributed to China for the first time. Earlier this month, Australia joined the US, UK and the EU to attribute an attack on Microsoft Exchange servers to China. Addressing a parliamentary inquiry on Thursday, Australian Signals Directorate boss Rachel Noble said Beijing had crossed a line. “What happened … To describe it in plain language, it would be like houses and buildings had 14 locks on the doors. When the Chinese government became aware of those faulty locks on the doors, they went in and they propped all those doors open,” she said. “What then happened was there was an opportunity for all sorts of criminals, other state actors, you name it, to pour in behind all those propped open doors.” “It was that action, from a technical point of view, crossed a line.” With how Biden was talking recently, this could lead to very serious responses. Australia's $90 Billion contract for 12 French Sub's has long been called folly, that the vessels themselves will be obsolete the day they enter service. Defence secretary Greg Moriarty has recently confirmed his department is looking at alternatives to the French-designed submarines in case the troubled contract is sunk. Moriarty would not reveal what fallback options were being explored but described the process as “prudent contingency planning”. Note some may find this content confronting.
President Bidens well known for Gaffees and fumbles. Confusing Libya and Syria, tripping up the stairs, and calling Kamala Harris 'president', Biden's made numerous gaffes over the years . Speaking to Fox News, Donald Trump's former doctor Ronny Jackson said it was vital that President Joe Biden gets a cognitive test to prove he is up to the job. Following numerous "gaffes" and verbal slip-ups since becoming president, Mr Jackson said he wants President Biden to get tested, just like Donald Trump, who agreed to take the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) to check for cognitive impairment a year into his presidency. His comments come as 13 other Republican lawmakers are also calling on Biden to take such a test and release the results. Note some may find this content confronting.

Ms Vicki Ward, State Labor's member for Eltham said in 2018, "There is plenty of evidence, though — it may not be consistent, but there is evidence. There is study after study after study that explains why this chemical causes so many problems in people and especially in babies. The Royal Australasian College of Physicians has called on the federal government for years to ban all firefighting foams with PFAS. I would take one step further — I would ban it altogether. Biden's America is starting to look weak on the international stage. Just recently, diplomats from the U.S. and China had a public blowup in front of reporters last Thursday at a meeting in Alaska to discuss policy and attempt to restore ties. The heated on-camera exchanges were a clear departure from the light pleasantries traditionally offered before diplomatic discussions. USA diplomats lambasted China for violating international norms through their crackdown on Uyghurs and other minorities in Xinjiang, cyber attacks against the U.S. and “economic coercion.” They also said, “We do not seek conflict but we welcome stiff competition, and we will always stand up for our principles for our people, and for our friends.” China’s Yang Jiechi replied with a lengthy lecture against the U.S. that went on for so long the subsequent translation took 17 minutes. I can't believe there is a movement suggesting Maths is racist. Yet thats what this episode goes in to bat against. President Joe Biden describes the abuse of people as ‘different cultural norms’. To be more precise, from News.com.au, Joe Biden appeared to downplay China’s horrible record against Uighur Muslims, saying “culturally there are different norms” in every country. He made these comments during a CNN town hall on Tuesday night, where he was asked about his recent conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping. In that conversation, the newly elected President reportedly pressed his counterpart over human rights abuses in Hong Kong and the northwestern Xinjiang province, where more than one million Uighur men and women have reportedly been detained in a sprawling network of “re-education” camps. Mr Biden answered by relaying Mr Xi’s justification for the abuses, saying the Chinese President “gets it”. “You know, Chinese leaders, if you know anything about Chinese history, it has always been, the time when China has been victimised by the outer world is when they haven’t been unified at home,” he said. I discuss this in tonights show, and ponder, given Hunter Biden's dealings, is this wishy-washy president what the world needs now given whats happening in the South China Seas. Talk about a gutless act. IF Lucasfilm really had the strength of their convictions, then hiding behind social media to do the "firing" would not be needed. Yet that is what they reportedly did. According to various news sites, "Gina Carano just revealed that she found out at the same time “as everyone else” that she had been fired from The Mandalorian. The actress claims that she discovered the news via social media, and not from anyone at Disney, which owns the Star Wars franchise. The Age reported "Soil being dug up in the heart of Melbourne to build the $6.7 billion West Gate Tunnel has PFAS levels that are 100 times the acceptable amount in drinking water, but this was never disclosed to the public, internal documents from the environmental watchdog reveal. In the first official confirmation of high levels of PFAS on the project, secret Environment Protection Authority documents seen by The Sunday Age show soil dug up along the West Gate Freeway has been classed as the second-highest level of hazardous waste. Documents lodged in the Supreme Court on Thursday show the Moorabool community group has requested a judicial review of Planning Minister Richard Wynne’s decision to amend the Moorabool Planning Scheme, which would allow potentially millions of tonnes of PFAS-contaminated soil to be dumped at the Maddingley Brown Coal landfill in Bacchus Marsh." In this show I give an update on the situation. A situation that could see cancer linked chemicals find their way into the food on your dinner plate. According to MEG, the Minister bypassed community consultation in his decision, reasoning that all community concerns were addressed by an Environment Protection Authority (EPA) approval. But here’s the rub: In December, the environmental watchdog reversed its own approval to dump contaminated spoil from the West Gate Tunnel at Bacchus Marsh. "The EPA conceded that its approval of this plan was unlawful and of no legal effect.” MEG said Note some may find this content confronting. So this week I finally got around to watching Star Wars episode 9, Rise of Skywalker. Yes, very late to the party, especially as I am a proud geek. After watching this film, and processing the mess I watched over a few days, I sat down and recorded my thoughts. From Wikipedia - Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker) is a 2019 American epic space opera film produced, co-written, and directed by J. J. Abrams. Produced by Lucasfilm and Abrams' production company Bad Robot Productions, and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is the third installment of the Star Wars sequel trilogy, following The Force Awakens (2015) and The Last Jedi (2017), and the final episode of the nine-part "Skywalker saga".[a] The film's ensemble cast includes Carrie Fisher,[b] Mark Hamill, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Anthony Daniels, Naomi Ackie, Domhnall Gleeson, Richard E. Grant, Lupita Nyong'o, Keri Russell, Joonas Suotamo, Kelly Marie Tran, Ian McDiarmid, and Billy Dee Williams. The Rise of Skywalker follows Rey, Finn, and Poe Dameron as they lead the Resistance's final stand against Supreme Leader Kylo Ren and the First Order, who are aided by the return of the deceased galactic emperor, Palpatine. Note some may find this content confronting, because this film was just stupid. Talk about going out not with a bang but with a whimper. Following on from last weeks show, I discuss the first 100 days of Biden's Presidency, now that the Trump era is over. There are some signs of to worry about, as well as trying to actually find what the first 100 days will be. One thing will dominate, and that is the 2nd impeachment of Trump. One American (Neer Dutta) wrote, "The Democrats have a short, two-year window to achieve many things because they will most likely lose at least one of the houses of Congress in 2022. Why waste even a single day on a futile impeachment trial? Some argue that the benefit of impeaching and convicting Donald Trump is to prevent him from running for the presidency in 2024. To that I say, bring it on! If the Democrats achieve legislative success in the next four years, then they should dare the Republicans to put Trump on the presidential ballot again. The Democrats won’t just win, they will win “bigly!” Note some may find this content confronting. This episode contains material used for fair use commentary, criticism, and educational purposes. With guest Andrew Elsbury, we discuss the Democrats going after Trump again for a second Impeachment, why? He only has two weeks left in office. CNN wrote "With less than two weeks until President-elect Joe Biden takes office, the nation is on edge -- unsure whether Trump will incite another round of violence or just carry on, petulantly, seeking outlets to whine about Twitter's decision to ban him. Recognizing the instability, Vice President Mike Pence has not ruled out an effort to invoke the 25th Amendment, a source close to the vice president has told CNN. The relationship between Trump and Pence is fractured -- they haven't spoken since Wednesday, when a violent mob stormed the Capitol, and the President never bothered to check on Pence's safety. The insurrection put the country at a crossroads. If Pence doesn't move on the 25th Amendment, House Democrats are preparing to bring a new round of impeachment proceedings this week over Trump's role in inciting the deadly riot. If they go forward, Republicans could again be faced with a public test of their loyalty. That so few seem prepared to forcefully speak out, let alone pledge to take action against the President, suggests the Capitol siege is less likely to have marked the bloody end of Trumpism than the opening of a more dangerous chapter." Back in December, a leak revealed almost 2 million CCP members are working in business and governments across the globe. Per IACS, "Among the companies mentioned in the list are manufacturers like Boeing and Volkswagen, pharmaceutical companies like Pfizer and AstraZeneca, and banks like ANZ and HSBC. As per the documents, around 600 people at HSBC, Standard Chartered banks are CCP members. Citibank, BNP Paribas, Hewlett-Packard, Mitsubishi, Ernst & Young, KPMG, Siemens, Ikea, Mercedes-Benz, Bank of America and other companies are also mentioned. One of the Indian companies, Tata’s Jaguar Land Rover has around 70 employees from the CCP." Some of those businesses have access to payroll systems detailing personal info of many many workers and clients. Have they been assured that there is no risk to their data? Note that these reports emphasized there is no evidence that spying for the Chinese government or other forms of cyber-espionage have taken place. News.com.au does say though - The CCP now has more than 92 million members worldwide. They are required to make an oath that puts the party’s interests above everything else and “be ready at all times to sacrifice my all for the party”. The last council meeting here in Wyndham (Victoria Australia) had a bit of debate around a couple of items to do with the MAV and the VGLA. Who represents us and on if our city should use the membership it had paid for. The Star Weekly wrote : “Taking that away tonight is the most egregious breach of trust and teamwork that anyone would ever have seen in a council, except for examples of where councils have ultimately led to their own demise,” Cr Gilligan said. After the council meeting, Cr Gilligan issued a statement which said the council was “deeply divided with the personal agendas of newly elected councillors triumphing over decisions that are in the best interests of the community”. He said the councillors’ conduct also “speaks to an emerging toxic culture within the council that must be externally investigated”. In this episode I discuss this stuff. In Dark Waters, a film based on a true story, Robert Bilott is a corporate defense lawyer from Ohio. Farmer Wilbur Tennant, who knows Robert's grandmother, asks him to investigate a number of unexplained animal deaths in Parkersburg, West Virginia. Tennant connects the deaths to the chemical manufacturing corporation DuPont, and gives Robert a large case of videotapes. Robert visits the farm, where 190 cows have died with unusual medical conditions such as bloated organs and tumors. DuPont attorney Phil Donnelly tells him he is not aware of the case but will help out in any way he can. Robert files a small suit so he can gain information through legal discovery of the chemicals dumped on the site. When he finds nothing useful in the EPA report, he realizes the chemicals might not be regulated by the EPA. DuPont sends Robert hundreds of boxes, hoping to bury the evidence. Robert finds numerous references to PFOA, a chemical with no references in any medical textbook. In the middle of the night, Robert's pregnant wife Sarah finds him tearing the carpet off the floors and going through their pans. He has discovered that PFOA is perfluorooctanoic acid, used to manufacture Teflon and used in American homes for nonstick pans. DuPont has been running tests of the effect of PFOA for decades, finding that it causes cancer and birth defects, but did not make the findings public. They dumped thousands of tons of toxic sludge in a landfill next to Tennant's farm. PFOA and similar compounds are forever chemicals, chemicals that do not leave the blood stream and slowly accumulate. Is Werribee River, and all that depend upon it, about to suffer a similar fate?
