Des Bishop! Comedian! Author! Polyglot! Delight! Des is a super funny comic and here is the proof in the form of nice things that have been said about him and it: “Funny, erudite and effortlessly delivered.” - The Scotsman “Charismatic, sincere, eloquent and always seeking the angle.”- Chortle “Fast paced and clever. A sure-fire winner.” - The Sunday Age, Melbourne Des Bishop's new comedy special, Of All People, is an hour of original stand-up and a culmination of years of experience on stage all over including in Queens, Ireland, and China. Bishop crafts high-energy stories and jokes, bringing the audience on a wildly entertaining ride through tales of his international travels and the gap between his looks and attitude. The openness and honesty of his presenting style combined with his restless imagination and perceptive observations make Des Bishop a must-see for fans of unique, insightful and provocative comedy. Des's material often focuses on cultural differences he noticed being a transplant into Irish Society from Queens, NY at a young age. He always incorporates a lot of material about language. He is likely the only comic many of us will see doing some of the set in Mandarin and some in Irish, which he learned so he could do comedy while living in China and Ireland. He spent 1 year in China to learn Mandarin and 1 year in Ireland to learn Irish, and he's done 60 minutes of comedy in both languages. And he remains an international presence, with a home and massive career in Ireland, and a life in the United States.  Of All People is the third hour from Des Bishop. You can see the special as of Oct 22, 2024, on the 800 Pound Gorilla Media YouTube channel and comedy hub.   About Des Bishop: Now a massive star in Ireland, native New Yorker Des Bishop moved from Queens to Ireland in his mid-teens in 1990. The openness and honesty of his presenting style combined with his restless imagination and perceptive comic observations make Des Bishop a must-see for fans of unique, insightful and provocative comedy. He came to Irish fame with TV shows, The Des Bishop Work Experience (2004), where he lived on minimum wage working different jobs in Ireland, Joy In The Hood, where he taught stand-up comedy in disadvantaged areas of four major Irish cities, and In The Name Of The Fada (2008, winner of the IFTA Best TV Series Award) about when he decided to learn Irish from scratch and perform a 60-minute stand-up comedy routine in the Irish language. In 2010, Des wrote his most personal show called My Dad Was Nearly James Bond, inspired by his father, Mike who was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Bishop won an Irish Book Of The Year Award for his memoir of the same name, and brought a solo show version to the Edinburgh Fringe to widespread acclaim and five-star reviews. In 2013, Bishop went to Beijing, China to learn Mandarin. He is now fluent and the show about his experience, Breaking China was another major hit series with another acclaimed Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Des has appeared on many live stand-up shows including Edinburgh Comedy Festival Live (BBC), Live at the Comedy Store (Comedy Central) and Australia's Spicks and Specks (ABC). He was also the star of HBO's A Comic's Climb, his Aspen Comedy Festival debut in 2005. He has released five best selling stand-up DVDs and his new digital special, Of All People comes out Oct 22, 2024 on 800 Pound Gorilla Media after his specials One Day You'll Understand (RTE 2018) and Made in China (Universal 2015).  About this podcast: You can listen to it! The inimitable Annabel Crabb joins us for this special spotlight episode where we shine a light on the changing impact of journalism in a shifting media landscape. In a world where truth is increasingly contested, can the fourth estate still be trusted to deliver reliable information which brings us together into some sort of shared reality? Or has our trust in journalism been irrevocably broken by the ‘democratisation' of information - the relentless immediacy of self-selecting delivery platforms - as well as the unabating attacks of all political sides, who too often claim that it's just a front for power or an opinion, or even worse, a home for misinformation. How can we rebuild trust in the news, recognising its limitations while understanding its critical role in a well-functioning society? As to disagree productively, we need a shared reality as our foundation.Annabel CrabbAnnabel Crabb is an Australian political journalist, commentator and television host who is the ABC's chief online political writer. The Age reported "Soil being dug up in the heart of Melbourne to build the $6.7 billion West Gate Tunnel has PFAS levels that are 100 times the acceptable amount in drinking water, but this was never disclosed to the public, internal documents from the environmental watchdog reveal. In the first official confirmation of high levels of PFAS on the project, secret Environment Protection Authority documents seen by The Sunday Age show soil dug up along the West Gate Freeway has been classed as the second-highest level of hazardous waste. Documents lodged in the Supreme Court on Thursday show the Moorabool community group has requested a judicial review of Planning Minister Richard Wynne’s decision to amend the Moorabool Planning Scheme, which would allow potentially millions of tonnes of PFAS-contaminated soil to be dumped at the Maddingley Brown Coal landfill in Bacchus Marsh." In this show I give an update on the situation. A situation that could see cancer linked chemicals find their way into the food on your dinner plate. According to MEG, the Minister bypassed community consultation in his decision, reasoning that all community concerns were addressed by an Environment Protection Authority (EPA) approval. But here’s the rub: In December, the environmental watchdog reversed its own approval to dump contaminated spoil from the West Gate Tunnel at Bacchus Marsh. "The EPA conceded that its approval of this plan was unlawful and of no legal effect.” MEG said Note some may find this content confronting. There is still a footy shaped hole in our hearts, so the boys from "The People's Game" are back to try and fill it with a retrospective look at our great game! On the agenda this week: "THE UNWATCHABLES" - The 1916 VFL Season Our Unwatchables segment this week is built not on a round, but on an entire season. The VFL competition had continued without change in 1914 and 1915, but by 1916 Australia's Gallipoli moment had happened, and lengthy campaigns in the Middle East and Europe were underway. The VFA and the South Australian Football League both cancelled their season, and in the VFL, Essendon refused to play unless the competition was amateur. That request was denied, and the Dons eventually pulled out on patriotic grounds, alongside Geelong, Melbourne, South Melbourne and St Kilda. That left the four working class, inner-city clubs - Richmond, Carlton, Collingwood, and Fitzroy - to play each other four times across twelve rounds, with all four making the finals... The boys explore this unique VFL season and discuss: •Should footy have gone ahead in 1916? •Was 1916 the ultimate "asterisk" premiership? •Does the 1916 season teach us anything about how to approach footy during the COVID crisis? FOOTY BOOK CLUB: Footy In Times Of Crisis The Guardian recently published two conflicting pieces about how to approach sport during the Coronavirus shutdown. Geoff Lemon in "Sport in Australia will survive Covid-19 but its importance will be diminished", writes that footy is not as important as we thought it was, while Jonathan Howcroft in "Fear of missing out becomes a reality in sport during COVID-19 crisis", reflects on all the sporting moments we're missing out on in 2020. With these pieces as background, the boys tackle this winter's big question: "Does sport "matter" right now? "THE REWATCHABLES" - The Winmar Moment This week is a special edition of the Rewatchables, looking back at Round 4, 1993, when St Kilda clashed with Collingwood at Victoria Park. Nick Place wrote about Nicky Winmar's famous post-game stand against racial vilification for the following day's edition of the Sunday Age, and he joins the boys to relive the day, explain how the story made it to print and to reflect on footy from the 90s.

While off-field transformations in the game have influenced many of our discussions, it is the footy that brought us here to start with. Due to the sheer volume of heart-stopping finishes - throughout both the freakishly even home and away season and the finals series - many of these live deep in the memory as era-defining.  In 1993, Rohan Connolly had one of the best jobs in football. With the bulk of AFL games still played on Saturdays, there was no better paper to write for than the Sunday AGE. Already a ten-year veteran on the football writing beat, Rohan had a box seat to draft the first cut of history in this unforgettable season.  As a man who loves a list more than most, there is nobody better than Rohan to help us determine our top ten games from The Greatest Season That Was, 1993.  The Greatest Season That Was: 93 documents our contention that in 1993, footy was never better. Hosted by Adam Collins, Dan Brettig and Shannon Gill, this series is an in-depth exploration of one amazing season.  The Greatest Season That Was: 93 is produced by Jay Mueller and edited by Thom Lion. Contemporary governments frame surveillance and secrecy as evils necessary to ensure our security. Individual privacy has been trumped by the need for covert behaviour on the part of states and corporations who collect and store our personal metadata and monitor our activities via new technologies without our knowledge or consent. The arrival of women in the workplace has changed the way society functions – whether we’re talking about jobs and career, bringing up kids, or relationships. Research tells us that while women’s responsibilities have shifted to include paid work, their male partners still don’t share equally in the work at home. In fact, men are often stuck at the office, expected to be the ‘ideal worker’ and to have fewer family demands on their time. Can men break this cycle? Do they want to?
