We're entering a new era for the indie author...In the last few years we've once more seen seismic shifts in the self-publishing industry. No one understands that better than author consultant Joe Solari, who recently took the reins of what was once the 20Books to 50k conference. Rebranding under the Author Nation banner, Joe has been on the front lines, helping authors marry their artistic dreams with concrete business goals. In this interview, we dive deep into the history of 20Books, the changes that are coming with Author Nation, and how Joe hopes to grow regional support around the largest author conference in the country. Joe Solari is a consultant for authors and publishers, known for his experience in business ownership, private equity, and fundraising. He holds a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Since 2016, he has been helping authors navigate the complexities of the publishing market and has written guides for this purpose. The new digital-first traditional publisher...It's been awhile since we talked about the differences, pros and cons of traditional versus indie publishing. As our tagline says, "We believe there's no single right way to produce, publish, or promote your writing, only what works for you!"Which is why we're excited to have Stephanie Carey on the show. Steph is the Commissioning Editor at Joffe Books, one of the UK's leading independent publishers of commercial fiction, and they're currently looking to expand further into the American thriller/suspense market. We met Stephanie at the 20Books to 50K conference in Vegas last November, and really enjoyed our conversations. We always think it's a good idea to learn about all of the publishing options, and Joffe has been on the cutting edge of the NEW digital-first traditional publishing space. Both indie and traditional authors will learn a lot from this one!The indie publishing landscape can feel like untamed wilderness, but Stephanie reveals how Joffe provides a collaborative yet hands-on approach, giving authors the reins over editorial decisions and cover art. This blend of control and support could be the nurturing ground needed for authors to flourish long-term.If pitching publishers is on your horizon, Stephanie has advice on how to query, what to do, and better yet, what NOT to do as you seek a contract.THIS WEEK'S SUBSCRIBER SPONSORMany thanks to The Indy Author, Maddy Dalrymple, for becoming a subscriber and sponsoring the show. Bold statement: indie publishing is a maturing industry.A few weeks ago, The Author Wheel attended the 20Books to 50k conference in Las Vegas, and in this episode we're going to talk about our experiences. Our biggest takeaway? There are dozens, possibly hundreds, of different strategies for author success. Moreover, the very definition of success depends on the author and what they're looking to get out of their writing. With nearly two thousand writers in attendance, we saw it all, and talked about most of it.The landscape of publishing is changing once again. We highlight successful indie authors who have secured contracts, expanded their reach through film and audio book adaptations, and built impressive careers. Understanding your genre, treating your books as a catalog, focusing on your target audience, and building a growth mindset are critical. Welcome to episode 190 – ten off another major milestone! TB is stressed. Why, I hear you cry? The November IHS Mega Sale for one, along with the IHS Sapphic Reading Challenge for 2024. Plus, she's got a co-write to finish. But what's bringing a touch of lightness is her WIP, which is set in Vermont. TB has been able to get out and enjoy the picturesque state. She also has some very sad news to share. Meanwhile, after a couple of months focusing on business, Clare's got back in the writing saddle and aims to get London Romance 9 to her editor before Christmas. You heard it here first. Her paperbacks are still flying off bookshop shelves, and she's determined to finish her year-long reading challenge on a sapphic high! They crash on to the topic at hand: the 20Books Vegas Conference and what did they learn? First, presentation matters. Second, Vegas is expensive and badly carpeted. But mostly, that you can learn a lot at such an intense and varied conference, but none of it matters as much as the people you meet and the connections you make. Bonus lesson: Clare can still play pool. Her lesbian card is still intact. Phew. What do you think are the key points of attending conferences? Last year, I went to the 20Books Vegas conference and one of the most inspiring talks that I attended was all about writing through adversity. Her speech touched my heartstrings and was the only talk that made me cry! So, of course, I had to bring her on to the show to talk to all of you! In today's podcast episode, I had the great privilege of speaking with bestselling urban fantasy author, Martha Carr! We talked about her diagnosis in 2010, how her PA Grace helps her be the amazing author she is, and even about her Kickstarter coming this May. You don't want to miss this one! Have a listen! 20Books Vegas just opened up again for registration, so Brian Drake joined us AGAIN to discuss the conference with Justin. Also, this year, Justin joined a Skyrim designer to discuss writing for games. http://20booksvegas.com/ What is 20Books Vegas all about? Here's the introduction speeches and high-powered author panel from 20Books Vegas 2022. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCTrqmZBt-FWUWnxWD2x5Ucg 20Books Vegas 2022 was by far the biggest and best of the 20Books shows (we've had a bunch). It is the biggest show in the world focused on self-publishing although there is something for every author, traditional or indie. Why would you come to Las Vegas in November to be with up to 2500 authors, publishers, and industry professionals? Because we believe that everyone deserves a chance to succeed if they take the knowledge and experience and apply it to their author business. What if you could ask a question of someone who is where you want to be? What would that question be? Vegas gives you that opportunity. We had over 300 authors making full-time money from their writing. There will be something for everyone. Be warned, no one is going to carry you and make you an overnight sensation. You have to do that for yourself by applying what over 100 guest speakers have to offer. Are you ready to excel, reap the rewards of your good work? Then take control of your author career. There is no other conference like 20Books Vegas. This show is predicated on the principle of giving back. It is run without any profit. We run this show because philanthropy is a part of our lives. We make our money off our fiction. We don't need to make it from other authors. So we don't. We get our reward when we see others We have our Live Events YouTube Channel so you can see the types of presentations we have made along with our daily material. Please follow the 20Booksto50k(R) Live Events channel for a great source of information on all things publishing. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCTrqmZBt-FWUWnxWD2x5Ucg
20Books Vegas has come and gone and my brain is still a whirlwind regarding the entire experience. There was so much to see, so much experience, so much to learn... and then some! In today's podcast episode, I'm dishing out all the goods on the 2022 20Books Vegas Conference experience. I'm going to talk about my top 5 sessions (and maybe one bonus one!), as well as what I'd do differently next time around. Plus, you can get a little flavor for what it was like being in Las Vegas. Strap in, kids. It's gonna be a long one! It's 2022. Lindsay is taking a break from the podcast and writing, taking a year off to accomplish some other things on her list. But Jerry has recruited someone else to join him. Because, as new authors, we should be talking to each other, the New Author Podcast will have a new co-host. Joining Jerry most weeks will be Rich Kacy. Listen as Jerry and Rich (and sometimes Lindsay) talk about things Jerry learned at the 20Books Vegas conference, writing when life gets in the way, their publishing hopes, and anything else that pops into their head while talking into a microphone. If you're an existing author or are writing your first book, come and listen to us because we were in the same boat as you. We've made mistakes, so you don't have to! Come hear our successes and our mistakes, and find out where we spend money and where we shouldn't have spent money. We'll tell you everything we did to be successful (or fail...as the case may be). And you'll hear a nice conversation on things Jerry learned at the 20Books Vegas conference, marketing tools and how to gain newsletter subscribers. When asked about the high-performing prolific authors, the first thing that comes to my mind is always the epic Facebook group, 20Booksto50K. Their success truly is the success of all indie authors and we, as a collective, are so lucky to have this group on our side. In today's episode, I had the privilege of speaking with Craig Martelle - prolific author master and 20Booksto50K co-creator. We talk about his own role as an indie author, how 20Books has evolved over the years, and touch on the incredible conference the group puts on each year. Have a listen! Be sure to check out the show notes by going to authorrevolution.org/111.
Mark shares three short audio excerpts from the November 2021 20BooksVegas conference. 20Books Vegas 2021 is by far the biggest and best of the 20Books shows (there have been ten so far). It is the biggest show in the world focused on self-publishing although there is something for every author, traditional or indie. The 20Books mentality is that everyone deserves a chance to succeed if they take the knowledge and experience and apply it to their author business. With up to 20 authors making seven figures a year and hundreds making a full-time living, there will be something for everyone. Be warned, no one is going to carry you and make you an overnight sensation. You have to do that for yourself by applying what over 100 guest speakers have to offer. Are you ready to excel, reap the rewards of your good work? Then take control of your author career. Prior to the main content, Mark shares recent comments, a personal update, thanks new patron Michael Howell and shares a word about this episode's sponsor. What I’ve been up to in July, what I’ve learned, goals for August and your monthly tips. What I’ve been up to, such as: Editing. Working out low cost launch plans for my new book, A Sleuth & a Charlatan. Reading fiction & non-fiction, including Big Magic, by Elizabeth Gilbert and David Gaughran’s BookBub Ads Expert. Reformatted A Thief & a Gentlewoman’s paperback size. Reviewed notes for Strangers to Superfans (also by David Gaughran) to plan what I need to implement. I talk 20Books to Edinburgh, including: Delayed flights and working at the airport. Catching up with existing friends and making new ones. Feeling even more of a sense of belonging with my tribe. My first writing retreat – making a start on drafting my pirate books. Getting my arse kicked by mad people who get up at 5am. Getting my arse kicked/being made to cry in the nicest way by Lyz Kelley – all part of finding your inner, truest why, leading to your inner, truest brand. Lindsay got to meet lots of cool authors at the 20Books conference in Las Vegas this fall, and today’s guest was one of those people. Urban fantasy author Ramy Vance was involved in the traditional publishing world for years, but when it came time to publish his fiction, he decided to go indie. He’s written a number of novels and
Craig Martelle is a science fiction author. In just about two years, Craig has authored 30 full-length novels, numerous short stories, anthologies, and co-written books. He has written 2.25 million words written over the last 844 days, averaging 2,677 words a day. Talk about hard work! Craig is also the man behind the 20Books conferences.
