The son of an actor, Australian screenwriter Abe Forsythe grew up around creatives. “I spent a lot of time backstage as a kid,” he says. “Sitting in the green room, watching Dad perform. Subconsciously, it made me realize you can have a career following your creative path.” Outside of his immediate influences, Forsythe was influenced by the early work of Peter Jackson, specially a horror film called Bad Taste. “I became obsessed with it. There was something about the fact that he made that movie on his own, shot in New Zealand over four years, playing two roles himself, doing the effects himself.” This self-reliant approach, along with watching other Jackson films like Braindead with an audience, sparked something inside of Forsythe. “Seeing his progression from Bad Taste to Meet the Feebles to Brainddead to Heavenly Creatures, I thought, ‘This guy can do anything.'” “I feel like I'm still chasing how those movies and those experiences made me feel.” In his own work, Forsythe has gained some notoriety for films like Down Under, Little Monsters, and the recent series, Wolf Like Me. “I'm trying to connect to that inner child,” says the screenwriter. Blending the personal within the lanes of genre, the show is about an emotional wreck named Gary who struggles to provide for his wife after the death of his wife. This is when he meets Mary, a woman with a secret she can't bring herself to tell another being. Want more? Steal my first book, Ink by the Barrel - Secrets From Prolific Writers right now for free.

Now, exactly ten years later, the creators are back with their most exciting project yet: a press release. But it's a press release that's promoting their next thing, The Bazura Project's Radio Free Cinema. As many will doubtless recall, The Bazura Project's Radio Free Cinema was a huge hit, broadcast on an unspecified radio station an indeterminate number of years ago. Welcome to "Season Two" of the Scary Stuff Podcast! It's just over one year since we first launched our pod, so we're celebrating by going back to our zombie beginnings. For our very first episode, we reviewed the entire Return of the Living Dead franchise. So we're kicking off this next series of episodes with a zombie world tour, with each of our hosts picking one movie to review and then a twitter poll determined the fourth. Jake chose The Battery (2012, United States) from pod-favorite creator Jeremy Gardner (and if you haven't checked out After Midnight, his collaboration with Christian Stella, please please do!). Eric's pick is The Girl With All the Gifts (2016, United Kingdom), the adaptation of the novel from writer Mike Carey. Nick's selection is Little Monsters (2019, Australia), from director Abe Forsythe and starring the fabulous Lupita Nyong'o (and decidedly NOT Howie Mandel).  For the fourth and final movie, the winner of the twitter poll was #Alive (2020, South Korea) which is currently available on Netflix. And Jake talks a bit about #Alive's parallel movie Alone as well! Frogsie didn't survive long enough to see this episode's release, but we hope YOU enjoy it. And as always, thanks for listening! No, not the movie where they buried Howie Mandel in blue makeup and prostheses and put him across from Fred Savage, the flick with Academy Award Winning actress, Lupita Nyong'o! Fresh off her award-winning performance in 12 Years a Slave, which-- oh yeah, was her feature film debut! Lupita opted to try out comedy in an absurd dark comedy, which adds rabid fourth graders to the classic Rom Zom formula, mastered by Peter Jackson (Dead Alive/ Brain Dead) and Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead). She credits her massively jacked shoulders from her work on Black Panther, just months before.  Written and directed by Abe Forsythe, a filmmaker who previously had no aspirations of making a Rom Zom. The story was organically conceived when he dropped his son, who has severe food allergies, off with his primary school teacher. While on a field trip, Forsythe wondered to himself if a zombie outbreak started at that very instant, if his son and his classmates would be safe. Forsythe was so impressed with his son's teacher, the answer was resoundingly yes. Since recording this episode, it was confirmed he is set to direct a new installment in the RoboCop franchise: Robocop Returns, rumored to have Peter Weller returning as the titular character.  Opposite Lupita is Alexander England as "Uncle David"  Anderson. England had previously been in Down Under, also directed by Abe Forsythe.  While Josh Gad joked that this film would equate to career suicide, it seemed to be a return to his roots on The Book of Mormon. Perhaps best known as Olaf in Frozen, Gad plays the jaded children's star Teddy McGiggle, whose crowning achievement is sleeping with as many single moms as possible.  This week's "Hidden Track" is Them! by Francis Hollow. The EP it's on, "The Darkness and All It's Friends," is a tribute to horror movies from the 1920's - 1950's from a more modern music perspective. Each song is based around a different movie (in order) The Wolf Man (1941), THEM! (1954), Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954), and Nosferatu (1922). The artwork was done in collaboration with Spanish Artist Nache Ramos, more of his work can be found at https://nacheramos.tumblr.com/. With the Sundance Film Festival still raging, and some of the most exciting new and independent films seeing the light of day, I got the exciting chance to talk to two composers for films premiering at the fest. First, Piers Burbrook de Vere talks about his collaboration with Abe Forsythe on the cheeky, quirky, tonally dynamic zombie comedy Little Monsters. Then, I spoke to Roger Suen, composer for Justin Chon's lush, melancholic Koreatown drama Ms. Purple about his deeply symbiotic working relationship with Chon, the mishmash of cultural and instrumental influences that went into his eclectic musical depiction of LA's multicultural atmosphere, and the importance of Asian-American filmmakers telling Asian-American stories with authenticity and specificity. Before all that, however, I get to share my lovely, surprisingly involved interview with screen legend Richard Dreyfuss. On the heels of his recent visit to Chicago's Tivoli Theatre for an appreciation of Jaws, Dreyfuss talks to me about everything from the importance of civics education to the unconventional path that led him to his recent reemergence from acting retirement. (We also get to wax rhapsodic about Mr. Holland's Opus, so this podcast is pretty much a wall-to-wall music appreciation hour.) The Geektown Radio podcast returns this week to discuss the latest tv reviews, film news, UK TV premiere date info, and US TV news as Dave is joined by Darryl from Hollywood News Source as co-host. We also have not one but two interviews with composers whose films premiered this weekend at the Sundance Film Festival, Roger Suen & Piers Burbrook de Vere.Roger Suen is best known for scoring Justin Chon's 2017 Sundance award-winning film, 'Gook'. This year, Roger reunites with Chon to score the emotional Asian-American family drama 'Ms. Purple' which premiered at Sundance last weekend. The movie tells the story of Kasie, a young girl who has to seek help from her estranged brother when her bedridden father's caretaker unexpectedly quits. The siblings are forced to reconnect and reconcile the suppressed trauma that led to their separation. When Roger isn't working on his own films, he helps out other composers, providing additional music for their scores. This has led to his work being featured in Guillermo Del Toro’s four-time Oscar-winning film 'The Shape of Water', Netflix’s five-time Emmy-nominated series 'Daredevil' and Emmy-nominated series 'The Defenders'. Through his mastery of orchestral composition and modern electronica, he has also created heart-pounding additional music for Oscar-nominated 'X-Men' and 'Maze Runner' film franchises.Australian composer Piers Burbrook de Vere most recently scored award-winning director Abe Forsythe's zombie comedy 'Little Monsters', starring Lupita Nyong'o ('Black Panther'), Josh Gad ('Frozen'), and Alex England ('Alien: Covenant'). Whilst the movie has zombies and comedy, it also needed the actors to play musical instruments on screen. That included Lupita playing the ukulele, and Alex playing the guitar... with the minor issue that Alex couldn't play the guitar when they started filming, so we chat with Piers about what they did to solve that!Piers previously scored Forsythe's award-winning provocative black comedy, 'Down Under'. Additionally, he has exhibited works across the US and Europe as an artist and performer, and has toured internationally with the acclaimed Australian Chamber Orchestra. Also On This Week's Show:I'm joined by Darryl from Hollywood News Source as co-host, so we review the movies and tv series we've been watching in the past few weeks. We take a look at all the latest tv & film news, including renewals & cancellations. We give you our recommendations for upcoming TV in the next 7 days.
