Say It In Red

Dear Listeners,I've been having nightmares recently. Maybe I shouldn't call them nightmares, but it's hard to describe them in any other way. Each night, I fall asleep – or at least, I think I'm falling asleep – only to see the silhouette of a tall, beautiful woman open my door right before I lose consciousness. The next thing I remember is walking through my old high school and finding one of my classmates drinking another girl's blood. Terror seizes me, because I forgot to study for my blood drinking exam. I run from the room,  mostly to give the girls their privacy, and fall right into a massive pit of worms. Dread arrests my limbs, because they're all sour gummy worms and now my clothes are covered in tart sugar and sticky goo. Also all of these gummy worms are dirty now and that's just adding to the stress. Around this time, a writhing shadow covers me and I awaken in a cold sweat, look up, and see the flowchart for Heaven's Feel open on the monitor in front of me.On this episode, Sara, Runa, and returning guest MK complete their reading of Fate/Stay Night with the Heaven's Feel route! This route immediately diverges from the others, but still remains close to the Fate route until a scene in the Matou family basement pulls us deeper into the literal pit of Sakura's trauma and despair. When Sakura confides in Shirou about the abuse she's suffered at her family home, he takes her to stay at his house to protect her from Shinji and their terrifying grandfather, Zouken. When a mysterious, eldritch Shadow begins stalking the city and defeating servants, Shirou and Saber start investigating only to cross paths with a new servant, True Assassin, at the Ryuudo Temple. While Shirou faces off against Zouken, the master of True Assassin, Saber fights his servant only to lose not to Assassin, but the mysterious Shadow. Meanwhile, Sakura has been suffering from sudden intense fevers and bouts of weakness and Shirou encourages her to remain at his home and rest. When Shinji attempts to take Sakura back to the Matou home, Rin and Shirou try to protect her only to end up facing Rider, now revealed to have been Sakura's servant all along. From there the Shadow continues its rampage, Zouken continues scheming, Shirou continues experiencing unnerving nightmares, and Sakura's condition continues to deteriorate. The final secrets of the Holy Grail War come to light in this final route, as Illya reveals her connection to Shirou, Rin and Sakura reconnect as sisters, and Angra Mainyu properly takes the stage at last.Fate/Stay Night Q&A Episode: Our April Episode will be a huge Q&A Episode about the whole of Fate/Stay Night and Fate/Zero questions are up for grabs as well! They discuss this year's nominations, the BAFTAs as a predictor for this year's Oscars, the ASC Awards nominees, and a little about last year's nominee and winner, Hoyte Van Hoytema, for Oppenheimer. Both Alice Brooks for Wicked and Stéphane Fontaine for Conclave were not nominated this awards season, but were nominated for ASC Awards. Ed Lachman, cinematographer of Maria, won the ASC Award this year. Ben, Jenelle and Illya agree that Drew Daniels for Anora and Benjamin Kracun for The Substance were also cinematographers who deserve recognition for their work. This mix is a recording from a recent event at the Civic Underground club in Sydney. It was the gloves off set for Mark Farina who had just done a four hour harbour boat party for Mushroom Jazz earlier that evening.I was asked if I wanted to do the closing set, and who would I wanted to go b2b with. Two names immediately came to mind, Ritmiq, a deep and minimal house DJ who I rate highly and iLLya Cooper a well known Sydney legend.  In the end I went with iLLya, because of his long standing friendship with Mark, having played alongside him on many previous tours.A lot of people thought I was brave and a little crazy trying to play b2b with such a skilled DJ, but I wanted to be challenged.I had iLLya come onto my radio show a couple of days before the event to see how we could sound together.  You can check out the show here. The atmosphere in the club was pretty special, the crowd was very knowledgable and a real mix of ages.  Mark got them fired up good and proper and before we knew it, we were up.iLLya started our set off and played for the first 15 minutes.  We then went back and forth for the next hour and a half.  As you can hear iLLya drops acappellas and vocal hits all through the mix, scratching and chopping.  It was a wild experience but so much fun. I dropped my latest track "London Nights" and was blown away by the response.  Everything seemed to change on the dancefloor, different people were suddenly at the front of the dancefloor in front of me and they were giving it some.  It felt amazing seeing people connect and enjoy something you have created.I really hope to get the chance to play b2b with iLLya again.  A longer set would be magic as we were just getting into our stride. For anyone in Sydney you can catch me at Tatler tomorrow night where I have the whole night to myself!!!  Four hour set where I can stretch my legs and play some incredible music from the last 35 years of house. The following Saturday (21st), I am back at the Civic again for Night Safari.  I'll be picking up where I left off. Finally, on NYE I'll be playing for Boogie at the Ivy Ballroom supporting none other than DJ Spen and Dave Lee (Joey Negro)! It's been a great year for DJing out for me, fingers crossed that 2025 continues in the same direction.Enjoy!

Whether organic or artificial, the recent reports of flyers being dropped in London threatening Zionist-Jews, and the recent UK incident of Jewish kids on buses being attacked by other kids off the street, are examples of a rising chaos that is without context. However, we know that a woman in Canada holding her arm up like a National-Socialist and saying ‘Final Solution' was doing so as a Jew to smear Palestinian protestors; we know a man in the US putting swastikas on signs had a Jewish name and was looking to smear Republicans; we know that Maccabi Tel Aviv soccer fans in Amsterdam were ripping flags down from a private residence in a foreign country, disturbing the peace of a flood victim memorial, and attacking cab drivers, all while chanting “death or Arabs,” long before mobs gathered in resistance or some random person said ‘cancer Jews'; we also know that an Atlantic hit piece, written by the Jewish Franklin Foer, on the incoming presidential administration in the US being ‘the most Anti-Semitic Cabinet in Decades' is totally in contrast with nearly every appointment-pick being a Jewish-Zionist, Christian-Zionist, or zealot looking for war in Iran. What this tells us, alongside of 79% of Jews voting for Democrats, who receive half their campaign money from Jews, and $100 million dollar given by the Jewish Mariam Adelson to her ‘savior' who won the US Presidential election, there are multiple factions looking to make Jews victim in order to just censoring speech, protest, press, and even guns in the case of the Jewish Michael Bloomberg. We also know that according to the Council on American Islamic Relations that nearly 49% of Muslim students are being harassed or mocked in schools simply for being Muslim, most having never been to a protest. This is a constant theme that has been increasing since 2013, and a true definition of rising anti-semitism, a term which has been hijacked like the words holocaust or pogrom. In fact, despite the blatant disregard for peace or the law in Amsterdam by Jewish fans, Benjamin Netanyahu accused respondents of attacking Jews “just for being Jews,” and said that the response was nothing more than a “pogrom,” a term that refers to the calling for massacre of a particular group of people - Palestinians, Russians, etc. As is the case with holocaust being a mass killing by fire - Hiroshima, Nagasaki. Either way you divide this issue you find one group or another being made victim and given special protections against the rights of others; you find common Jews being made victim to violence by bigots fed either leftwing or rightwing propaganda; you find calls for war. All of this is setting the stage for literal armageddon, when even that is metaphoric like the Promised Land. This show is about understanding, peace, and context. If we neglect to approach these subjects as such then we are reduced to the rhetoric of the Jewish Communist Ilya Ehrenburg, who called to kill all Germans, just as today there are calls to kill the Russians, Palestinians, Ukrainians, Americans, Christians, Jews, Muslims, and so on.-FREE ARCHIVE (w. ads)SUBSCRIPTION ARCHIVEX / TWITTER FACEBOOKWEBSITEPAYPALLEAVE A REVIEW ON APPLECashApp: $rdgable EMAIL: rdgable@yahoo.com / TSTRadio@protonmail.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/tst-radio--5328407/support.

Uitsluiting by design.

We welcome cinematographer Matthew Libatique, ASC for his third time on the podcast. For this interview, Matty, Ben and Illya have a more technical discussion about lenses, LUTs and cameras used on Don't Worry Darling, A Star is Born and The Whale. For the film Don't Worry Darling, Matty found it easy to find the right mid-century modern visual style, since the production design, costumes, hair and makeup were all influenced by that distinctive look from the 50's and 60's. Director Olivia Wilde wanted to invoke the Rat Pack era of Las Vegas and Palm Springs. She also heavily referenced the 1975 movie The Stepford Wives, along with an 80's and 90's thriller element from movies like Devil's Advocate. They were able to shoot some of the exteriors at the historic Kaufmann Desert House in Palm Springs, while all the interiors were sets. Matty chose the Arri Alexa Mini LF camera for the larger sensor, so they had more focus fall off on the wider focal lengths. He also wanted as much color in the frame as possible, and chose a LUT that accentuated the reds, oranges and yellows without affecting or oversaturating the skin tones. The lenses he used were Blackwings and Sigma Classics, because he liked the multiplicity of lens flares. Matty immediately went from shooting Don't Worry Darling into prepping and shooting The Whale with director and frequent collaborator Darren Aronofsky. They spent some time figuring out how to take a play and translate it into a film, where Charlie, the main character, spends most of his day stationary on a couch. Matty and Aronofsky realized that using 4:3 framing to hold the vertical in the foreground solved the problem. Aronofsky also wanted to block the scenes so that the camera wouldn't be stationary and static the entire time. Matty chose to use the Sony Venice camera for the first time, due to its light sensitivity, with Angenieux Optimo Prime lenses. The camera movement was dictated by the characters who come and go around Charlie, so different scenes were marked with a wide shot, then pans and forced cuts to make it more visually interesting. As for the composition of each scene, the camera had to follow the eyeline of where each character is looking. Matty also used as much minimalist, naturalistic lighting to tell the story. He used the windows as a light source to show subtle changes in the weather outside of the apartment, and while there were not a lot of windows, it helped show the passage of time and affected the mood of the film as the days pass in the story. On our 250th episode, we welcome returning guest and longtime friend of the show, cinematographer Abe Martinez, who catches up with Ben and Illya about his work around the world for the past few years. Most recently, Abe completed the new Disney+ show National Treasure: Edge of History and a new Netflix action-comedy series, Obliterated, by the creators of Cobra Kai. Abe has been learning and perfecting his technique of using video walls for action on big sets, creating a version of “poor man's process” to shoot cars and figuring out the exact size video walls needed. They coined the phrase “middle class process” because it looks much better than the old poor man's process. Using video walls requires a lot of math and tech setup, but it also offers plenty of opportunities for creativity without spending a lot of money to actually go to locations. Abe enjoys the challenge of trying to create realism with the proper lighting and angles. After working as a loader and camera operator on many films, Abe began working on the series Queen of the South on USA Network. Working on Queen of the South launched Abe's career into director of photography work, where he became the lead DP in season 3 and worked on the show for the next three years. As a Latino person who grew up in a rougher area, Abe felt he could really relate to the storylines about gangs. He also sees a throughline from his real life as a nomadic world traveler to the storytelling he's drawn to lately- many of the shows he has been shooting are about characters who are being displaced, or who feel displaced. Abe's passion is doing street photography everywhere he goes. He enjoys exploring color and movement and experimenting with different film stocks or digital color science. This often gives him the creative spark for shots and compositions to use in his work. You can see Abe's street photography on Instagram. The guests leave the dining area and head to the fancy entertainment rooms of the Rostov estate. These are the drawing rooms, sitting rooms, parlors, terraces, and libraries – the Rostov mansion has it all. Ilya Rostov sits down in one of the rooms to enjoy a French card game named after an American City, Boston.  As per custom, young people gathered around a few instruments, including the clavier and harp. Julie Karagina takes a turn on one of these. There was some anticipation for Natasha and Nikolai to sing but Natasha noticed Sonya was not present and went off to find her. Sonya was hiding in a passageway and crying. She was in a hideaway that women of the household went to when wanting some privacy. Natasha felt overcome with emotion when she saw Sonya drowning in her own tears and started crying herself. She was doing her best to try to comfort Sonya, a showing of genuine sisterhood. Sonya explains that Nikolai's mobilization papers have come in and he will be leaving in a week. Sonya respects that it is his duty to go, however, some unkind words from Vera brought Sonya very low. Vera got her hands on a poem where Nikolai was expressing his strong feelings for Sonya. This motivated Vera to voice how Sonya should not envision marrying Nikolai. First, Nikolai & Sonya would need permission from archbishop as they are second cousins. More importantly, Countess Rostova would be offended by the prospect. The countess would expect Nikolai's wife to have higher social status. The deep love they share is not enough. Vera proffered that Julie would be a better match, which devastated Sonya. Sonya loves the Rostov family and expresses how she would make any sacrifice but feels she has nothing to sacrifice. The question may become: will she sacrifice her love for Nikolai. Natasha counsels that it will all work out.   The two then went back to the festivities and Natasha, along with her brother and Sonya, sang “the Fountain.” Then Nikolai sang a song on his own. Some of the lyrics were: “On a soft night beneath the moon, How joyous to feel and to know, That in this world there is someone, Whose thoughts are thinking of thee….”At this point the guests were getting ready to go to the ballroom and the musicians could be heard getting ready. Pierre is chatting with Shinshin, and young Natasha runs up to Pierre and tells him it that her mother told her to get Pierre to dance. Pierre extends his large arm to Natasha's small one and Natasha is excited to be accepted in such a manner by someone so grown-up. As they sat and waited for the music, Natasha fanned herself like a full-fledged member of society. The way she was behaving impressed her mother. In the ballroom, Illya Rostov chose an unexpected dance partner, Marya Dmitrievna (“le terrible dragon”), who hardly had the physique of a dancer. The musicians got the signal to play the Count's favorite song, the “Daniel Cooper.” It is a song with an English name but is essentially Eastern European folk music played by a traditional band. It involves a lot of kicks, raised knees, swirls and swinging arms. Ilya, in his fancy dress, get really into it. He was bouncing, turning, waiving on the band – and all the attention on him. He lost himself and soared like an eagle. Everyone was impressed with the show. His rotund partner stayed in one place, smiled and bounced around. She had a level of rhythm and was impressive in her own way. The dance ended to thunderous applause, and in his ecstasy Illya said, “That is how we would dance in our time!”

Cinematographer Alicia Robbins' work on the Netflix show, Keep Breathing, was quite challenging as they had location scouts at seven different remote forests in Vancouver, Canada near Whistler. The crew had to off-road it for miles, and they filmed in some locations that had never been shot before. Keep Breathing is about Liv Rivera, a high-powered attorney whose private plane crashes in the Canadian wilderness. Alone, she must conquer her inner demons and struggle to survive while finding her way back to civilization. Liv's life is shown in flashbacks as she tramps through the forest. Alicia shot the second block of Keep Breathing while fellow cinematographer Jon Joffin shot the first block. Jon put the team together for the first half and she was happy that the key crew was already established. Due to the pandemic, Alicia had to quarantine in her apartment in Canada for two weeks. The added time gave her the chance to go over the lookbook, watch dailies from the first half, and have hours of discussion with the director about shots, colors and tone. As a DP, Alicia says so much of the time you're just thrown into prep, quickly looking at locations, without enough time to think it all through. Cinepod host Illya and Alicia first met working on a small low budget indie feature called Boppin' At the Glue Factory, written and directed by Illya's longtime friend Jeff Orgill. Alicia began her career after graduating from AFI and started shooting low budget features while working her way up. Her first big television DP job was the series Grey's Anatomy, where she worked for nearly three years. Alicia was ready to to try something new and expand her skills as a cinematographer, so she was excited to face the challenges on Keep Breathing. Alicia is currently shooting the new season of Bridgerton, which has been a delight. She enjoys working in London, with amazing, beautiful locations and lush, colorful costumes and set design. A quick chapter centering on the emotions of Countess Natasha Rostova. Once Anna Mikhaylovna Drubetskaya leaves for the Bezukhov estate, Natasha becomes sentimental. Anna's message, whether intended or not, affects her deeply. The Countess decides to help her childhood relation and not make Anna pursue a bequeathment from the sickly Count Bezukov who may be in no position to give anything. She summons her husband through a servant, and the good-natured Illya quickly answers. He is dripping from the fancy duck sauté his serf Taras is making for the extravagant dinner that lies ahead. Ilya notes that the 1000 rubles he paid for Taras was well worth it! The serf is a Russian who trained under a French chief. This "1000" ruble reference is likely a signal for what comes next -- the amount Natasha will give to her friend to set her son Boris on a noble path.Boris needs 500 rubles to properly enter his position with the Imperial Guard. His mother simply doesn't have it. As far as disposable funds, she has about 10% of what is needed. The Rostovs have provided assistance to Anna & Boris and even let Boris live in the household. He is a relation, but not one of the children.  The Countess, however, concludes Boris must be treated like a true child in this circumstance. Natasha tells her husband that she needs money - a lot of it. Her husband reveals his character; namely his goodness. He is kind and loves his wife and will not withhold anything, even if it may not be financially prudent. He will grant her wish enthusiastically, and is not one to withhold something so base as finances. Natasha says that she needs 500 rubles. He does not ask any questions and is ready to help - Men, take notice!  Ilya calls the household finance manager, Mitenka, and directs him to get 700 RUBLES (200 more than what was asked for)…in crisp new bills. What a guy…is the point!  Mitenka wants to tell Illya that he should be careful with releasing such funds, but he observed Ilya's demeanor and wisely holds his tongue.  Anna arrives back from the visit to Count Bezukov and the two have an emotional moment. They embrace and cry. They cry for the fact one of these intimates was in such need and also that the other could meet the need. They also cried over the fact they were childhood friends and that they are now at the opposite end of life.
