I talk about Safety 2, safety differently so much but we rarely talk to people that have implemented in on the coal face for as part of what will hopefully a regular occurrence of people on the coalface that have actually seen this stuff work….or not work? Let's find out? Today's guest is Adam Johns.

I love exploring my own curiosity about people, their stories and experiences and insights. In a two part conversation, Colin talks to flight safety expert, Adam Johns, who with over a decade of experience in commercial aviation industry, has marked himself out as one of the world's foremost specialists in people safety. In this second instalment, Colin and Adam discuss a more collective approach to problem solving, and why the aviation industry may be in need of a complete reboot when it comes to safety regulations. KEY TAKEAWAYS Aviation is an industry classed as high risk, and therefore it comes with a more restrictive and severe set of regulations when it comes to safety. Accidents were more proliferate to begin with, so this is not surprising. Policy can longer be built around aviation, based upon the concerns and failings of the past hundred years of its history. It has now reached a point where it is a uniformly safe industry, and requires new thinking. Safety failings in aviation are made more dramatic by the way they are presented in the media. It has forced the industry's safety to grow faster than any other. We learn how to prevent, and how to consider the needs of people, not just by focusing on what went wrong, but what goes right. BEST MOMENTS ‘Regulations on the safety side were developed as a result of accidents' ‘Imagery and metaphor is incredibly powerful' ‘We've had to grow up fast' 'There is an opportunity here to take stock of safety in our business' VALUABLE RESOURCES The Interesting Health & Safety Podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/vn/podcast/the-interesting-health-safety-podcast/id1467771449 Adam Johns LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/adamjohns730/ Adam Johns at Safety Differently - https://safetydifferently.com/contributors/ ABOUT THE HOST Colin Nottage ‘Making health and safety as important as everything else we do.' This is the belief that Colin is passionate about and through his consultancy Influential Management Group (IMG) is able to spread into industry. Colin works at a strategic level with company owners and board members. He helps business leaders establish and achieve their health and safety ambitions. He has developed a number of leading competency improvement programmes that are delivered across industry and his strengths are his ability to take a practical approach to problem-solving and being able to liaise at all levels within an organisation. Colin also runs a company that vets contractors online and a network that develops and support H&S consultancies to become better businesses. Colin chairs the Construction Dust Partnership, an industry collaboration directly involving many organisations, including the Health and Safety Executive. He is a Post Graduate Tutor at Strathclyde University and a highly sought-after health and safety speaker and trainer. In a two part conversation, Colin talks to flight safety expert, Adam Johns, who with over a decade of experience in commercial aviation industry, has marked himself out as one of the world's foremost specialists in people safety. In this first part, Adam talks about the effects of lockdown upon the aviation industry, how to ensure that skills are not eroded over time, and how appearing as a safety coach my prove far more effective to your workforce. KEY TAKEAWAYS Lockdown has seen some airlines reduced to around 10% of their normal operations. It will take perhaps 3 to 4 years for the industry to fully recover. To prevent skill-erosion, it's important that airlines endeavour to keep training their staff. Simulators are still used today, and are still effective. There is a large disconnect between the way we think things are being done, and the way they are actually being done. We need to give people credit, but also try to measure more effectively. By acting more in a coach/facilitator capacity, we grant autonomy and encourage others to improve safety and quality. BEST MOMENTS ‘It's aerospace engineering for people who didn't want to do so much maths!' ‘Making sure that planes stay in the sky, but making sure that the people who work on them are safe as well' 'There might have to be a bit of a revolution in how pilot training takes place' ‘Our job is to bring new ideas into organisations' VALUABLE RESOURCES The Interesting Health & Safety Podcast - https://podcasts.apple.com/vn/podcast/the-interesting-health-safety-podcast/id1467771449 Adam Johns LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/adamjohns730/ Adam Johns at Safety Differently - https://safetydifferently.com/contributors/ ABOUT THE HOST Colin Nottage ‘Making health and safety as important as everything else we do.' Rev. Derek "The GeekPreacher" White joins us once again, and this time it's even more special than usual. This episode is a sort of test case for a new thing we might be doing with Derek more regularly—having Derek on to talk about specific theological topics from a geek perspective! First, though we've got a Patreon question to answer from Doug Hagler, who asks us what our individual D&D alignments are, and some Scripture we've picked out for the topic. Then we let Derek take the lead as we discuss the unlikely sorts of heroes we see in both Scripture and in pop culture, from Moses and David to Frodo and Hawkeye. Accidental heroes, broken heroes, screwed-up heroes—we've got them all, and we're happy to talk about them! Also mentioned in this episode: Unsong; the Critical Core Kickstarter from Game to Grow; and STG 115, "RPGs in Social Skills Therapy (with Adam Davis and Adam Johns)". Scripture: Exodus 4:10-17, Isaiah 6:5-8, 1 Corinthians 15:2-11
On this special lesson of Detentions and Dragons, Matt interviews Adam Davis and Adam Johns of Critical Core. Critical Core is an RPG that helps kids on the autism spectrum build real-life skills through a fantasy role-playing game. It is also a great entry point for players new to RPGs! We have had Adam and Adam on before to talk about their non-profit Game to Grow and how they use therapeutic RPG sessions to help young people develop social skills and confidence. They were great then. They are still great now. If you are interested in Critical Core, their kickstarter, and what their kit has to offer, you must listen! I was fortunate to moderate a panel with licensed mental health providers about the World Health Organization's (WHO) decision to classify Gaming Disorder as a mental health diagnosis. I'm joined by Adam Johns, LMFT, Megan Connell, PsyD, Ryan Kelly, PhD, and Anthony Bean, PhD. We start the conversation by discussing possible benefits of the WHO's decision to list Gaming Disorder as a diagnosis. The panel shifts to talking about elements of videogames that could be problematic or foster addictive behaviors, and then discusses the various functions that videogames serve including entertainment, stress relief, and social connection. The conversation concludes with an exploration of how we should all monitor and manage our time with videogames including possible warning signs that too much time and energy is being devoted to videogames.
Myra and Sean welcome Adam Johns to the show. Adam is an accomplished film maker and actor but his character Timpani Dave is a loser with big dreams. He's too ugly for first chair in his University's ensemble but he still believes that one day with hard work he can star in the Super Bowl half time show.

Are you being told to give your child medication for ADHD? Adam Johns, a future FDN Practitioner, shares his experience as a young child exposed to adderall for a diagnosis of ADHD, and how it ultimately served as a gateway to street drugs and the heavy use of pharmaceuticals purchased off the street. He then suffered serious and tragic losses in quick succession that spiraled him down a path of self-destruction with an escalation into the use of heroin. Beating the odds, Adam finds the support and motivation he needs to manage his drug addiction. He finds ways to replace his addiction to drugs with a lifestyle that involves being out in nature, skiing, and finding someone to love. He gets significantly uncomfortable to regain health, and find happiness again, when the doctors were convinced that Adam was a hopeless case. Now, Adam is on a mission to help others who are suffering, manage their condition and learn to thrive. In a very special episode of The Inner Gamer, we have an interview with Adam Johns and Adam Davis, founders of Game to Grow. They run therapeutic social skills groups using tabletop games and video games as a medium to help kids grow socially. "Game to Grow believes that games of all kinds can improve people's lives, and these benefits are not limited to helping youth. Intentionally facilitated games can provide support to adults struggling with anxiety and depression, improve cognitive functioning in the elderly, provide relief for veterans suffering from PTSD, and help many other individuals overcome serious challenges. In the years to come Game to Grow will expand to serve these populations through providing direct services and offering support and resources to other providers so that they can use the power of intentional gaming to provide individuals in their care lasting life-enriching benefits." - Game to Grow Vision In this interview, we go over their idea for making this non-profit, the successes they've had thus far and their future plans to expand to help more people than ever before. Adam Davis and Adam Johns from Wheelhouse Workshop join us to discuss how and why they use Dungeons & Dragons in social skills therapy! Their Seattle-based organization has been doing this for a couple of years now, and they've got a lot to say. (We've also worked with Adam and Adam previously on some Game to Grow content.) We also tackle a question from Patreon supporter Francisco (of the Retro Rewind Podcast) about replacing our favorite RPGs with board games in a pinch, and Grant briefly describes his trip to Electric City Comic-Con 2017 and his terrible-but-awesome decision to help his daughter get into the Pokémon TCG. Adam and Adam then discuss Wheelhouse Workshop's work: Why RPGs in general, and D&D in particular, are useful therapeutic tools; how a game session in their offices differs from your usual tabletop session; their house rules for their games; some success stories and interesting moments; and much more. Also, we mention in passing Monte Cook Games' The Strange and Microscope, both of which are excellent games. For more information about Wheelhouse Workshop, visit their website or find them on Twitter and Facebook. Scripture: Numbers 23:8, Mark 2:15-17, 1 Peter 5:6-10

My guests for Episode 5 of Ego Check with The Id DM are Adam Johns and Adam Davis from Wheelhouse Workshop, a two-man operation whose mission is to help youths in the greater Seattle area build social skills through the intentional and targeted use of tabletop role-playing games. Both Mr. Johns and Mr. Davis have graduate degrees and use tabletop roleplaying games to teach social skills to children with a variety of mental health concerns. During our conversation, they discuss their professional background and how they use games like Dungeons & Dragons to teach children perspective taking, frustration tolerance, creative problem solving, and cooperation. They demonstrate a method to increase collaborative storytelling during a RPG session, which leads to us all wearing carved-out pumpkins on our heads! They explain the business model for Wheelhouse Workshop, and their plans for expansion in the future. If you are interested in coming on the show for an interview, or would like to become a sponsor, contact me to make arrangements.
