Simon and Lee start with yet more cocktail talk and then discuss their respective Christmases. They then talk about the difference between making art and play and marriage as a long-form improvisation, and PSA tests. Some other details from the episode: A bit about the grey wet weather in the UK; not drinking cocktails in Lisbon; what makes a cocktail a cocktail (three or more ingredients); a Negroni; Ginjinha from a chocolate cup; Aguardiente; how to pronounce modicum; cacio e pepe; Simon's cheese bread; the artisan bread world; slow cooked meat; Riverford Farm (Devon); walking in the rain; having Christmas dinner out (with a set menu); roast baby goat; being taken on a tour of the wine cellar; Bob's "Please Leave Quietly" non-website; Bob's "You can go now" cards; business cards that say "Please stop talking"; PSA tests and prostate biopsies; and erectile dysfunction. PS Lee's sound is a little poppy because he was recording while lying in bed a little poorly. You'll hear it perfectly when he says the word, "pop".--- Related links (and necessary corrections):Ginjinha portuguese liquer: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GinjinhaAguardiente https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AguardienteGet in touch with Lee and Simon at info@midlifing.net. ---The Midlifing logo is adapted from an original image by H.L.I.T: https://www.flickr.com/photos/29311691@N05/8571921679 (CC BY 2.0)

In this episode, we're continuing what we started with The Rumcast Guide to Jamaican Rum by hopping over to a typically less familiar locale when it comes to sugarcane spirits: Mexico.Mexico has a relatively unique rum landscape that includes everything from small, family-run farm-to-bottle operations that have been producing fresh sugarcane juice-based spirits for generations, to larger scale operations producing rum more closely aligned with typical mass market products found throughout Latin America. There are way too many distilleries to discuss in one episode, so rather than attempting to be comprehensive, we chose to focus on the two Mexican rum styles that most interest us right now: aguardiente de caña and Charanda. After discussing some background on both rum styles—including a look at the Charanda Denomination of Origin—we dive into the following brands and distilleries:Uruapan CharandaSol Tarasco CharandaEl Tarasco CharandaGustoso Mexican RumParanubesDakabendTso'okCamazotzCañadaRon AconteAs noted during the episode, we are keeping a running list of all known Mexican rum producers (including the many not covered during this episode) on our website: https://www.rumcast.com/episodes/mexican-rum-guideFor more information on Paranubes and Mexican rum, check out Episode 24, featuring our interview with Francisco Terrazas of Paranubes. For a deeper look at the distillery behind Uruapan Charanda, check out this virtual distillery tour.P.S. This week, we dive into Chevron's corporate prosecution of lawyer Steven Donziger with Paul Paz y Miño – the associate director of Amazon Watch. Defending farmers and Indigenous folks who have been poisoned by ChevronTexaco's pollution, Donziger helped to win a $9.5 billion judgment against the company for the devastation it caused in Ecuador. Instead of paying up, Chevron retaliated by demonizing Donziger. They conducted the very first corporate criminal prosecution in America, involving judges, law firms, and a private prosecutor, all of whom have direct ties to Chevron. They even stripped Donziger of his law license and kept him arbitrarily detained for nearly 1000 days — something that the UN and Amnesty International have condemned.Chevron's treatment of Donziger shows us how corporations can use their wealth to harass and punish those who dare speak out against their crimes. The oil giant's legal retaliation and intimidation tactics provide a blueprint to other companies seeking to skirt accountability and punish their opponents. At the same time, this story shows us “the anatomy of the corporate response” as Paul observes. It helps us understand and prepare ourselves for the tactics that fossil fuel companies and other mega corporations will use against Earth and human rights defenders in the decades ahead. Have you heard of the Amazon Chernobyl? To save money, ChevronTexaco deliberately caused the largest oil disaster in history. They dumped over 16 billion gallons of toxic oil waste into open pits in the Amazon rainforest in Ecuador. They poisoned rivers, streams, peasant farmers, and Indigenous communities living in the rainforest. Their cost cutting measures were fatal to hundreds if not thousands of people. Despite the fact that this is the most massive oil spill in history, completely dwarfing the BP spill of 2010, very few people are even aware of this catastrophe. Big oil has funneled so much money into our corporate media that this story is barely being shared.Chevron's victims refuse to remain silent. Their coalition of 30,000 Indigenous community members and peasant farmers have been battling the oil giant for decades. Lawyer Steven Donziger joins the fight. They win a landmark victory in the “environmental trail of the century,” but Chevron refuses to accept defeat. As you'll learn in this episode, Chevron uses every tool at their disposal to skirt accountability and retaliate for their loss. Next week we'll share the second part of this story: Chevron's corporate prosecution of lawyer Steven Donziger.May 21st is ANTI-CHEVRON DAY – an international day of action! This week, we are joined by Dr. Ayesha Khan (aka @wokescientist) who discusses the process of dismantling internalized capitalism. She exposes the psychologically detrimental effects of our economic system that are often overlooked, including the isolating, traumatic nature of capitalist individualism and competition. While recognizing that the roots of our struggles are largely systemic, Ayesha reminds us that we are not powerless in the face of capitalism. She shows us how we can challenge the system on a granular level – by working on ourselves and our connections to others. She explains that we can begin the process of our own liberation by striving to embody our political values in the present. Dr. Khan is an infectious disease scientist who has been working to build a new field of study termed “Abolitionist Science.” In addition to applying the scientific method towards anti-capitalist grassroots movement strategy, her work focuses on helping folks apply revolutionary political theory to their daily lives and relationships.
