Rickshaw comes from a Japanese word that means “human-powered vehicle.” The vehicle was first used in 19th-century Japan and then in other Asian countries to transport passengers. Rickshaw pullers are traditionally male. Through social media, some Japanese women are drawn to the profession. And now, they have developed a strong local and international following. Yuka Akimoto is one of the women who have chosen to pull rickshaws in Tokyo. “I don't deny it was extremely hard at the beginning,” Akimoto said, as the rickshaw can weigh up to 250 kg. “I'm not athletic and the cart felt so heavy.”“我不否认一开始非常困难,”秋元说,因为人力车的重量可达 250 公斤。 “我不擅长运动,而且推车感觉很重。”Now, she says she loves her job and wants to work as long as she is physically able. She wears a small sign that reads: “I don't want to give up.” Akimoto joined Tokyo Rickshaw two years ago. The company mainly operates in the Asakusa area, where many people visit. The company says about a third of their 90 pullers are now women. They are seeking more females to work for the company. “The first girl who joined was cool,” said Tokyo Rickshaw President Ryuta Nishio. “Since we posted videos of her on social media, many girls have followed... and joined us.”“第一个加入的女孩很酷,”东京人力车社长西尾龙太说道。 “自从我们在社交媒体上发布她的视频以来,许多女孩都关注了……并加入了我们。”Nishio said he wants to create a place where women feel at ease and can be involved. Rickshaw pullers wear special, traditional clothing on their feet. The pullers walk or run an average of 20km a day, no matter the weather. In addition to being physically strong, rickshaw pullers must know a lot about Tokyo. They also need to communicate with visitors who want to see the city. The most popular pullers earn over 1 million yen (about $6,700) a month. That is three times the national average. Tokyo Rickshaw noted that less than 10 percent of all applicants are offered a job. The pullers actively use social media to increase their popularity. They want people to request them personally and repeat rides. It was those social media posts that influenced college student Yumeka Sakurai to join Tokyo Rickshaw. “I've watched many videos of women training hard and becoming rickshaw drivers themselves. They gave me confidence that I could do it too if I tried hard,” the 20-year-old said.“我看过很多女性努力训练并成为人力车司机的视频。 他们给了我信心,让我相信只要我努力,我也能做到。”这位 20 岁的年轻人说道。Sakurai's friends and family disapproved of her choice. But after four months of training, she says she feels pleasure pulling passengers in her rickshaw. Shiori Yano is 29 years old. She has been pulling rickshaws for nine years. She balances the demands of the job and her family. She took a four-year break after having a child. She now works the rickshaw for eight hours a day, hurrying to pick up her daughter from childcare before going home to cook dinner and do housework. “This job looked flashy from the outside but I've had some hard times, including when I was rejected in favor of a male driver,” Yano said. Still, she says she will continue to work because she enjoys it.“这份工作从表面上看很华丽,但我也经历过一些艰难的时期,包括当我被男性司机拒绝时,”矢野说。 Tokyo Rickshaw's Nishio said sometimes people are not satisfied women are doing such physically demanding work. Female pullers also sometimes face unwanted sexual behaviors or have their knowledge questioned by male riders, he added. “We treat both male and female pullers completely equally,” Nishio said. “The women say they want to be treated the same as the men, and in fact many of them are way tougher.”“我们对待男性和女性拉手完全平等,”西尾说。 “女性说她们希望得到与男性相同的待遇,事实上她们中的许多人要强硬得多。”

Welcome to episode 61 of Holly Jolly X'masu! In this episode, I'll be discussing Kaoru Akimoto's 1968 album, “Tenor Sax Mood White Christmas.” I've collected a variety of things throughout my life. No matter what I've been collecting at the time, I've always had a handful of items that seemed just beyond my reach. In each case, I've managed to get at least a couple of those things I never thought I'd own. Sometimes, they turn out to be a huge disappointment. Luckily with my record collecting, each of the albums I've gotten that I never thought I'd own have lived up to or exceeded my expectations. Whether it's been Kaoru Akimoto, Jun Fukamachi, Chiemi Eri, or any of the others that either seemed to rare or expensive for me to get, or that one collector or another had told me to not even bother looking for because, they assured me, I'd never be able to get—they've all turned out to be at least as good as I was hoping. I hope you've found Kaoru Akimoto to be as satisfying an album as I did. It's a wonderful album and one I've listened to more than a lot of the others, mainly because of how early I got it in my collecting. As I said in the episode, though, there are a lot of even more spectacular albums out there. I've only covered a handful of the best ones so far, and the best ones truly are yet to come. Join me back here next week when I discuss Niw! Records' 2010 compilation, “We Wish You A Happy.” It's a fun, more contemporary album and one you're sure to enjoy. As always, any feedback on this episode would be appreciated. If have any suggestions, or if you'd like to recommend a song or album for a future episode, drop me a line and let me know. Remember, I've added a button to my Ko-fi page. If you'd like to support me one cup of coffee at a time, a donation is only $3. I've also opened a Redbubble store. I only have a couple designs up, but keep an eye on it as I'll be trying to add more. Half of any proceeds or donations received will be donated to support the people of Ukraine, while the rest will be used to purchase new Japanese Christmas music to review for future episodes. You can also find me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. And if you get a chance, leave me a review on iTunes. Thanks!

After more than six decades of feeding multiple generations of families, St. Louis Drive In continues to serve as the go-to spot for local-style comfort food in the heart of Kaimuki. Owner Wayne Akimoto leads the family restaurant today after his relatives opened the eatery in 1960. Situated on Waialae Avenue, across the street from Saint Louis School and Chaminade University, St. Louis Drive In serves up a wide array of local favorites prepared with plenty of experience and extra helpings of aloha. “It's been rewarding to see people grow up, and generations of families continuing to come back,” Akimoto says. “Because our employees have been with us for so long at our small hole-in-the-wall, including some who have worked in the restaurant industry for more than 50 years, we try to elevate the experience for everyone, including offering different varieties of seafood and plating the dishes like you're going to eat a nice meal in Waikiki! We honor our longtime employees with that dignity, and customers look forward to their favorites.” ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FOLLOW US ON Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/wherehawaiieats/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wherehawaiieats/ #localfood #burgers #comfortfood #kaimuki #drivein

You must defend your dignity when others are dismissive of your practice. Call them out with invitations to learn about your practice, how to chant, or chant with them. Never allow others to strip you of the tremendous dignity and importance of your Lotus Sutra Practice. Only with this spirit will you make great strides and rewards from your practice of MyoHoRenGeKyo.
Let's call it what it is. People who wish for Earthly mundane "things" and treat the mandala of Gohonzon like it is an "Alladin's Lamp" are slanderers of MyoHoRenGeKyo! I will quote Nichiren, "...singlemindedly chant to fuse with Buddha". Our practice of the Lotus Sutra is to awaken, to instantiate, to manifest our Buddha mind of clear perception and deep appreciation of the process of life.
How to influence others and how to avoid being influenced by negative soures. These are the skills and commitment of the Bodhisattva Way.

The Mind/Body is compared to a vessel, whose contents can be like water with a clear reflection (MyoHoRenGeKyo) that can be diminished or ruined in four different ways; or refilled.
Following the plenary session on “The future energy mix” of the 1st IAEE Online Conference, Piero Carlo dos Reis interviewed Prof. Keigo Akimoto (RITE), who chaired this session, in order to ask him about his main reflections. Prof. Keigo explained that the future energy mix will be largely driven by a wide range of technological innovations in both energy supply side and demand side aiming at deep GHG emissions reduction (e.g., renewables, batteries, negative emissions technologies …). However, Prof. Keigo believes that it will be challenging to coordinate deep emissions reduction across several countries at different economic growth stages, some prioritising cheap energy costs for their energy-intensive industries, others implementing carbon border adjustment mechanisms (CBAMs). Ultimately, if we wish to achieve deep emissions reduction worldwide, we have to make an effort to have both a good coordination among countries and clean technological innovations leading to cheap energy costs.

Dirty Linen continues its trip around the country as we head to Brisbane to get the lay of the land from ramen obsessive Taro Akimoto. Taro has four shops in Brisbane and his ambition is to create Australia's best ramen. He talks about the difference between the CBD and the suburbs and what that might mean for his business. Dr. Vince Akimoto (MD), partner and physician of Guam Medical Center, joins us in the Minty Fresh studio (via stream) to address the recent descent of Guam from Pandemic Condition of Readiness (PCORE) 4 to 1 due to 105 new positive cases of Coronavirus on the island (August 20, 2020). Recorded on Friday, August 21 just before the islandwide lockdown took effect, Dr. Akimoto shares his candid thoughts on the virus, its on-going threat to our community and what he thinks will turn things around. Dr. Akimoto holds no punches on where he thinks the Government of Guam has failed and praises areas they have done well. The conversation is funny, bold and brash. We'd expect nothing less from the one and only Dr. Akimoto. The new Mississippi lottery is up and running and the first big winner has been announced. Scratch off tickets have been selling at a solid pace for the past four weeks. Following a $2000 in-state winner early in December, a gentleman from Alabama recently won $20,000. The scratch-off ticket was purchased at the Scarlet Pearl Casino. The Scarlet Pearl is located in D’Iberville and this was one of the first casinos to sell the lottery tickets. William C. from Alabama won his Christmas gift on a Triple 777 scratch-off. Four new versions of scratch-off tickets will debut on Jan. 7. In The Next Story, A Canadian Compulsive Gambler Continues Lawsuit Against CasinoBack in 2013, Tarwinder Shokar lost more than $340,000 gambling at the Caesars Windsor Resort and Casino. He decided to sue the casino and the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Commission for $500,000 plus his losses. He claims that the casino and OLG knew he was a compulsive gambler with a problem. The case was recently transferred to the Superior Court of Justice in Windsor. He had been previously banned from other casinos prior to the loss at Caesars. He also tried to commit suicide by running in front of a bus. The case could drag on well into 2020 with no resolution in sight.Next Up, A Japanese Lawmaker Arrested for Suspicion of Accepting Casino BribesThe Japanese Parliament approved legal casino gambling three years ago. However, the process to build an actual casino in the country continues to drag on. One lawmaker that was a big proponent of this legislation was Tsukasa Akimoto. He was recently arrested on suspicion of accepting both cash and gifts from an interested casino party. The company was not named. However, it is believed to be a Chinese entity with an interest in online sports betting. Mr. Akimoto maintains his innocence after local authorities recently raided his office. The interested party was looking for his support in getting their casino plans approved.Lastly, Arcade Arkansas Seeks Support for Expanded Gambling MachinesArkansas offers three casinos and three pari-mutuel racetracks as part of its legal casino gambling platform. An outside group named Arcade Arkansas is seeking to expand this base with slot-like gambling machines. They gained permission to canvass the state with petitions for a constitutional amendment. This would allow the expansion of the coin-operated amusement machines. Players would build up points that could be used for merchandise and lottery tickets. Proceeds would support the Arkansas Scholarship Lottery with a 20 percent tax. Points would not be redeemable for cash. They could not be traded for the purchase of alcohol or tobacco products.

We talk about a top 10 shojo manga list in this episode, and we'd only read about one and a half of them. We really need to read more shojo stuff. That's why I'm glad Viz has been having a lot of digital shojo manga sales recently. I picked up the entirety of Ceres and From Far Away recently, and they've got Basara for sale right now. These sales are great if you want to get into older and out of print titles like those especially. You have to budget yourself just right if you want to get full series though. I'd love to pick up Basara, but I already blew my budget this month on Ceres and From Far Away. There's always next time, I suppose. My point is that if you really want to get into more shojo manga, trying out at least the first volume of one of the series Viz has been putting on sale every week would be a good place to start. That, or refer to the list we talk about in this episode and select a title from there. There's really a lot of variety in shojo titles that may surprise you. Last saturday was a real turning point in manga history, though. After four decades of continuous serialization, Kochikame finally ended it's run. A kudos to Akimoto-sensei for keeping a long running series going for four decades, a feat only a few other titles have done. But it's strange to live in a post-Kochikame world. Perhaps stranger if you live in Japan. After all, Kochikame was a part of the lineup for so long, it became something you took for granted. It was something you'd expect to see every week in Weekly Shonen Jump. A comforting reminder of how as much as things chance, some things stay the same. Still, all things must come to an end, and Kochikame ended on Akimoto's own terms, and during a resurgence of popularity. That's a fine way to go out. Akimoto is still kicking, though, and not done with manga yet. I really hope to see both Kochikame and his future works make their way to the west sometime in the future. Kochikame is about half of what we talk about this week, but there's plenty else we go over. This week your titular mavericks, Colton and Sid, discuss the recent two NYT Best Selling Manga Lists, debate all three of the latest Jump Starts, run down a Top 10 Shoujo Manga to recommend to men list, and unveil our exciting plans for the next episode? What could that be? Listening to the podcast will reveal all!
