It has been a fortnight and more since Paul Burns has been our guest on the Gaming News Canada Show. So given the various happenings around the Canadian gambling industry since his last appearance at the beginning of 2025, we asked Paul Burns to join us once again. With apologies to the late James Stewart and Frank Capra, Mr. Burns went to Ottawa earlier this month for the Council of Europe Workshop on the Macolin Convention gathering, which included panel conversations featuring the CGA head honcho, Dave Phillips and Doug Hood from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario, and Sportradar's integrity services lead Jim Brown weighing in on the province's regulated sports betting industry's work to combat match fixing. During our conversation, Burns told us that the collaboration between the AGCO, licensed sportsbooks, law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders means “the regime is working”. We also asked Burns for some thoughts and layers on three years of open, regulated sports wagering and igaming in Ontario and what's to come in Year 4, and the introduction of the iGaming Alberta Act by the ruling UCP party into the provincial legislature in the land of oil, gas and Connor McDavid. He also delivered an early look at what will take place during the June 17-19 Canadian Gaming Summit in the city below Caledon. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Gambling and marijuana continue to vex the governor and members of the General Assembly. Michael Pope reports.
Ontario's open, regulated sports wagering and online gaming market will turn three years old next week (the Fourth of April to be exact). A marketplace that opened in 2022 with a baker's dozen of operators approved to open their digital doors for business has expanded to 50 operators managing 84 gaming websites. Just before the Ontario market's third anniversary, your humble host recorded interviews with Bet99 head honcho Jared Beber, TRM Public Affairs president Troy Ross and igaming executive Amanda Brewer. Beber, Ross and Brewer answered our questions about the evolution of the province's regulated industry – including changes made to the rules around advertising and the use of athletes - and the role of both the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario and iGaming Ontario in creating one of the largest legal gambling jurisdictions on the planet. The trio also talked about the industry's responsible gaming programs, and the province's success in driving out offshore operators. And, of course, the conversations included the to-come launch of open, regulated gambling in Alberta and the potential for other Canadian provinces to follow Ontario's lead. Hosted on Acast. Whiskey in Wyoming, via Nevada and NorCal It's been nearly 20 years since I visited Wyoming, and I still remember it as one of the most beautiful places in the US. The least populous state, with multitudes more cattle and sheep than people, it is nonetheless one of astounding natural beauty, where small towns abound and you know your neighbors and who's growing your grain. This was the place Chad Brown wanted to bring his family. After years in Nevada working for the Gaming Commission and a small brewing hobby in his garage, a conversation with his cousin brought up the question: if they were making pennies on a batch of barley, where was the money going? There were so many breweries - what about starting a distillery? Tasting notes for this episode There's a long thread to explore there, but the key is this: Chad moved to Pine Bluffs, WY, in the southeast corner by the capital, Cheyenne, a town with "more elevation than people." Over the last decade, he and his team have founded and grown Pine Bluffs Distilling into a destination and a grain-to-glass distillery working with local farmers (we're talking between 15-25 miles away from the farm depending on the year's crops). Bourbon, rye, single malt, oated bourbon, oat whiskey, finishes, playing with the flavoring grains to see what would happen, all of it is here. Chad's passion vibrates out of him when he talks, and it's easy to see why Pine Bluffs has a bright future. When your founder cares, it flows to the team and to the guests. It was truly a pleasure to have this be the first distillery I talk to in Wyoming, and thank you to Chad for entering the Whiskey Ring! While the snow was flying outside of Gaming News Canada HQ on the shores of Lake Huron earlier this week, your humble host fired up the virtual studio to welcome Dave Briggs, the former managing editor at Catena Editor and editor interim of the Gaming News Canada newsletter, for an unplugged/unvarnished/unfiltered episode of the Gaming News Canada Show presented by GBG Plc. Instead of opening up our notepads, Briggs and yours truly conversed on a number of topics about the business of sports betting and gaming, including: Briggs's tour of duty in journalism, the horse racing industry, and his time at Catena as editor-in-chief of Play Ontario/Play Canada, PlayPennsylvania, PlayIllinois and PlayMichigan; A fact sheet released this week by the World Health Organization on gambling, and the global impact of advertising and marketing on problem gambling; The layoffs involving journalists by gambling affiliates in 2024;The opportunities with the breakup of iGaming Ontario and the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario, and the call (once again) for both parties to be more transparent and also be voices for the regulated gaming industry in the province;Coverage of the industry by traditional media outlets since the Ontario regulated marketplace opened its doors in April 2022; What the province's licensed operators – and the regulators - have done well, and what they could do better; And the motivation behind Briggs's Fresh Waves podcast which features music you won't hear on Top 40 radio. Sporttrade and its CEO are carving their own path through the sports betting businessThis fall, New Jersey-based online sports wagering business Sporttrade announced the launch of its app in Virginia, the fifth U.S. state where the seven-year-old company is operating. There's been a renewed flurry of media coverage lately around the legal gambling industry in the true north, strong and free, including: · An editorial by The Globe and Mail calling on the Justin Trudeau government to pass Bill S-269 before our elected federal officials head home for the holidays:· An interview by Matt Galloway of CBC's The Current with a problem gambler in the aftermath of a study released by the Lancet Public Health Commission on gambling;· A St. Albert Gazette piece on the relationship between igaming, advertising and problem gambling;· And just yesterday, this “Is the $11 billion online sportsbook bubble about to burst?” tome from the keyboard of David Hill for Rolling Stone. At the same time, the Canadian Gaming Association just made public research it commissioned North American advertising intelligence company MediaRadar to conduct on advertising by operators in Ontario's regulated market. The research shows a decrease in the amount of advertising spend by operators of online sports betting and gaming products since the province's market opened its doors in April 2022.Paul Burns, the CGA's president and CEO, returned to the Gaming News Canada Show to discuss the latest research, and also respond to the latest coverage by the Globe and CBC (the CGA also posted a response on LinkedIn to the Globe editorial). Burns also addressed the efforts the industry have made around responsible gambling while yet again emphasizing the operators' multi-layered actions to keep children from accessing their products. He also spoke about the challenges in front of advocates of Bill S-269 to have a national framework for sports betting advertising to take effect. He also spoke about the recent Royal Assent given by the Douglas Ford government to the iGaming Ontario Act, which will separate iGO from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario. We also asked Burns for his thoughts on what background and skill set the iGO board of directors and its recruiting firm should be seeking in the president and CEO who will replace Martha Otton when the woman responsible for leading the charge to opening the Ontario market in the spring of 2022 retires at year's end. In this episode, I leave home for a normal Sunday trip. I don't know it, but things are about change. After playing Blackjack at a few casinos and Slots at other casinos, I move on to my final Blackjack stop. I have a very lengthy, drawn out session playing double deck blackjack. I go through all my ups and downs and at the end of the night they are ready to close the high limit. I tried to cash out my chips with the assistance of the Pit Boss. My goal is to get the chips cash without providing ID. All of this ends up backfiring. Next thing you know I am calling the State Gaming Commission. I have the state Gaming Commission, law enforcement, and the casino lying on tape. I am able to prove it. In the end with all the lies they told me they gave me an ultimatum of being trespassed or providing ID. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mw-usa/support

When Brianne Doura-Schawohl joined the Massachusetts Council on Compulsive Gambling in the fall of 2013, the overturning of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act in the United States was five years away and amending the Criminal Code of Canada to pave the way for legal single-event sports betting was eight years away. Since then, Doura-Schawohl has gone on to become a leading voice on responsible gambling and problem gambling in senior leadership roles with the National Council on Problem Gambling, and EPIC Risk Management. In her current role as CEO of Doura-Schawohl Consulting LLC, she's working with stakeholders across the regulated gambling industry to address the growing concern around problem gambling. Doura-Schawohl, who doesn't shy away from advocating for more tangible action on RG, also provided more than a few words of praise to RG efforts in Ontario and across the rest of Canada by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario – when creating the province's regulated sports betting and igaming marketplace – the Responsible Gambling Council and BCLC with its GameSense self-exclusion program that is being used by operators in the U.S. Hosted on Acast. The regulated sports betting and igaming industry in Ontario recently turned the page on its second year of existence and begins Year 3 amidst gambling controversies involving the biggest star in Major League Baseball and a Toronto Raptors player, angst around sports betting advertising that won't go away, concern on how serious stakeholders across the business of wagering and gaming are when it comes to problem gambling, and illegal operators still having a prominent place across North America. Scott Vanderwel, the chief executive officer of PointsBet Canada, returned to the Gaming News Canada Show to discuss those topics, while also discussing the recent closing of the acquisition of PointsBet USA by Fanatics, PointsBet Canada's newish partnership with Strive Gaming to enhance its online gaming offering, the impact of University of Iowa basketball star Caitlin Clark on the business of sports betting, and the successes and lessons learned by operators, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario and iGaming Ontario is a highly competitive marketplace. Vanderwel was also joined by Nic Sulsky for a conversation on the breaking news this morning (Tuesday) that Sulsky is leaving his chief commercial officer position with PointsBet Canada to become a partner and CEO of the newly formed The Curling Group. Sportsnet announced this morning that The Curling Group will take over ownership and operations of the 12-year-old Grand Slam of Curling series. If you've watched a sporting event—or even tuned into network TV in general—in the past year, you're probably familiar with advertisements for sports betting. There are millions of dollars being spent in the race to sign up users and encourage them to wager on everything from games themselves to tiny outcomes in real time. And some companies are using superstar athletes like Connor McDavid to do it.But at least in Ontario, that won't last much longer. The Alcohol and Gaming Commission announced new regulations in late August that will prohibit athletes from appearing in betting ads. It remains to be seen if companies will search out loopholes, create other ads, or even ramp down their TV buys to accommodate the new rules. Why are there so many gaming ads anyway, and what does the future hold for the industry as the dust starts to settle?GUEST: Dr. Timothy Dewhirst, Professor and Senior Research Fellow, University of Guelph's Gordon S. Canadian operators have been waiting for months to see the outcome of the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario's new advertising regulations, and now they have their answer. In a similar move to the one taken by the UK, but perhaps going even further, AGCO have ruled for no more athletes, celebrities or influencers that would likely appeal to minors. What does that mean for operators in Ontario? And whose endorsement contracts may be done? We discuss this from multiple angles on the iGaming Daily podcast today, sponsored by SBC Summit Barcelona, with host Jessica Welman joined by her colleague on Canadian Gaming Business Nick Ware, as well as SBC News Senior Journalist Ted Orme-Claye to discuss the key changes, what it means to existing deals involving the likes of Georges St. Pierre to Wayne Gretzky and Conor McDavid to Neymar, as well as what options operators have for endorsement deals going forward. As part of the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario's mission to further protect young people, online gambling advertising standards in the province could witness a revamp this year. However, the AGCO has proposed raising the threshold so the term becomes ‘reasonably expected' to appeal to youth and children. This will include athletes – whether active or retired – as well as cartoon figures, social media influencers and other celebrities and entertainers. And this will be the topic of today's iGaming Daily podcast, sponsored by SBC Summit Barcelona, where James Ross is joined by Paul Burns, President and CEO of the Canadian Gaming Association. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, which investigates and enforces those state laws, Tuesday confirmed its involvement in the “ongoing investigation.”An Iowa City man, who was set to have a trial next week on attempted murder and robbery charges, cut off his GPS ankle monitor over the weekend and authorities Tuesday confirmed he fled to Jordan.Ali Younes, 19, charged with attempted murder, first-degree robbery and first-degree theft, used Jordanian travel documents and boarded a Royal Jordanian Airlines flight Saturday in Chicago, according to Johnson County Attorney Rachel Zimmermann Smith, University of Iowa police

Oh mama we are heading back to the Cross for another go around with the very funny Danny Giles. Danny tells us all about coming up as a regular club DJ in the mid 2000s boom of Electronic music. We talk funny DJ outfits, tell the tale of a failed strip club owner trying to clear his name with the Liquor and Gaming Commission, recount the genesis of the lockout laws and talk about the big no nos when requesting songs at a DJ booth. This one is a laugh a minute, maybe more. You can also buy our sick t-shirts and more from the link below! The city of North Liberty is hoping to transform Centennial Park into a regional attraction for the Corridor. A design concept for the $17.7 million project was presented to the North Liberty City Council this week. Proposed features include an event center, outdoor stage, open air pavilion, splash pad and garden to honor city veterans. City officials said they hope the project will draw more people to the city. The city purchased land for the park in 2010 and developed a master plan for it in 2012. Centennial Park, the city's largest park, opened in 2013. The city has completed four phases of work since the master plan was created, with the most recent phase wrapping up this year. Completed projects include construction of driveways, permeable paver parking, trails and age-appropriate play features. A preliminary project schedule shows construction beginning in December 2023 and lasting through May 2025, but that is subject to change as the design is developed and as funding is secured. A Cedar Rapids man was arrested Wednesday on a warrant for an attempted murder charge after he led police on a foot chase, according to a Cedar Rapids Police Department news release. Bernick Karsten Brown, 38, is accused of attempting to kill his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend, Branly Nkosi, by hitting him multiple times in the head with a baseball bat Feb. 12. The attack caused multiple skull fractures, a brain bleed and other serious life-threatening injuries, according to a criminal complaint. The man also had a stab wound in his back, but the complaint does not state whether the stabbing is thought to have been done by Brown. A Cedar Rapids patrol officer recognized Brown, who had several warrants out for his arrest, on Wednesday shortly after 5 p.m. The officer started tracking Brown and called for backup, according to the news release. Brown tried to hide in a home in the 1400 block of Bever Avenue SE and escaped out the back as police attempted to contact him, the release states. Canines were deployed during the foot chase, and Brown eventually was arrested after punching an officer. Churchill Downs announced the deal in February. Based in Los Angeles, P2E is a gaming and entertainment company that was formed in 1999 by Iowa native M. Brent Stevens. In February, Churchill Downs, which is publicly traded, announced the purchase of P2E's gaming properties, which also included seven horse racetracks in Virginia and a casino in New York.
