This is a pretty totemic episode. We welcome back IWOL alumni Alex Bleeker to plug his new book "Taste In Music", eulogize and rank Phil Lesh and discuss Neil Young's "Comes a Time". There's a little controversy mixed in too....don't miss this one.
In a terrific new book, Taste in Music, musician Alex Bleeker (of Real Estate) and food and travel journalist Luke Pyenson (former drummer of Frankie Cosmos) cover the world of music through the foods bands eat while touring the world. In this episode, we speak with Alex and Luke about a book that brings a lot of heart and empathy to a subject that has been covered since the advent of food blogging. Any working band worth its salt cod enjoys food as much of the rest of us, filling their touring riders with subtle culinary flexes. Sure, food is the new rock and roll—and rockers love their food—but as we find out, this collection of essays from legends like Mark Ibold of Pavement, Chris Frantz of Talking Heads, and Natalie Laura Mering of Weyes Blood is more than a collection of “where bands eat”; it's an essential addition to the music writing canon and one of our favorite books of the year. This week, we sit down with Evie McGee Colbert to talk about her latest book, co-authored with her husband, Stephen Colbert. She tells us about the dynamics in her family's kitchen, the joys and challenges of cooking together during the pandemic, Charleston food traditions, and we take a listener question from one special caller! Evie's latest book with her husband, Stephen Colbert, is Does This Taste Funny?: Recipes our Family Loves. She leaves us with her recipe for Salt and Pepper Wings. Then, we hit the road with musicians Alex Bleeker and Luke Pyenson to talk about their latest book, a collection of essays and interviews with musicians about life and eating on the road. They talk about their most memorable meals while on tour and the deep connection between musicians and food. Alex and Luke are the authors of Taste in Music: Eating on Tour with Indie Musicians. Alex Bleeker joins us for the final episode of IWOL for this calendar year. Pretty sure he starts major jam band beef; can't wait to see how this plays out in the New Year.
In an IWOL first, Alex Bleeker made it Snowdenseque and safely across the Canadian Border, and we catch up with him "alive and dangerous" to discuss all different kinds of ranking, plus James tries to be a real journalist for a moment.

Real Estate are an American indie rock band from Ridgewood New Jersey.Noted for their style of warm, hazy indie rock, with breezy melodies and jangly guitars, the band has experienced numerous lineup changes throughout the years but have stuck to a consistent laid-back approach, lyrically exploring themes such as their early high school suburban roots, through to parenthood. To listen to the full episode, including the featured music, visit... signlradio.com"Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg

"La, La, La, La" Yes, he was born in Ridgewood, New Jersey, but there’s always been a California feel to Alex Bleeker. The bassist for the beloved indie rock outfit Real Estate, Bleeker has also fronted Alex Bleeker and the Freaks, an outfit that plays a countryfied mash up of roots rock and psychedelia. That California feel I’m talking about can be traced to Bleeker’s love of the Grateful Dead. We talk about that in this interview, so I’ll let him explain, but Bleeker’s music has a timeless quality that makes it hard to place chronologically. This is a good problem to have, because one can never be pigeonholed or stuck in an era--they can float freely out of time. Speaking of floating freely, Bleeker’s first solo album does just that. A stirring and blissful collection of gentle jangles, catchy, '60s-tinged pop and ethereal melodies, Heaven On The Faultline is one of the most beautifully crafted albums you’ll hear all year. Or any year. In this chat we talk about The Dead, being jittery around germs and admitting there are classic albums we haven't heard yet
The JamBase Podcast Episode 78 features an interview with Alex Bleeker of Real Estate.
Set for release on March 5th, 2021, Alex Bleeker is adding another gem to his discography, in the form of an all new album called Heaven On The Faultline. You might know Alex Bleeker best from either Alex Bleeker & The Freakers or from him being the bassist in the indie rock band, Real Estate. He also works on his own on this self-titled project that we love just as much, which is why we were so incredibly excited to interview ahead of the release of this album. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/wewriteaboutmusic/support

Pitchfork's Paul Thompson describes today's guest's band as “wistful country-tinged rock, somewhere in the neighborhood of the Grateful Dead's American Beauty or maybe Neil Young's Old Ways”. My guests band has released several critically acclaimed albums; including, 2014's "Atlas," which reached No. 34 on the U.S. Billboard Album chart and received a Best New Music designation from the taste-making website Pitchfork. Best known as the bassist of the American indie rock band Real Estate, with whom he has recorded four studio albums. And, as the frontman and primary recording artist of the indie rock band “Alex Bleeker and the Freaks”. In 2015 Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann joined his band onstage at Outside Lands. I interviewed him seven years ago, at which time he explained how the California sound and the internet have helped shape his way in the world of music. Now, seven years later, it is my honor and pleasure to introduce today's guest Alex Bleeker.

We've been following the decade long career of Real Estate since the beginning. Now in their tenth year, they recently released their fifth album The Main Thing. The album comes at a time when the band previously in personnel flux has solidified their line-up and are set for a new beginning of sorts. It's always hard, as a band, to figure out where they want to go sonically as they mature as an act, if the circumstances afford them that opportunity. The Main Thing while still rooted in poppy hooks, vocal harmonies and solid songwriting does denote a new kind of sound for the band. So we caught up with Martin Courtney and Alex Bleeker of Real Estate to talk about the new album, a few interesting projects and a whole lot more. Stick around for the whole show and hear two great solo performances of Jerry Garcia/Robert Hunter tunes as Martin Courtney tackles Stella Blue and Alex Bleeker handles Dupree's Diamond Blues, performances taken from a special Live from Out There tribute to Garcia and Hunter. If you follow Random Old Records on Facebook, you know that episode #48, the first new episode of Random Old Records Podcast in TWO YEARS, was posted to Soundcloud back in February. This isn't just a temporary thing. ROR IS BACK! Expect to see a brand new episode every second day of the month from here on out. The reasons I quit and came back are convoluted and not very exciting, so I'm not going to go into great detail. The main takeaway is that my podcast host Mevio went out of business two years ago and took down everything I had online, and it's taken me a long time to get the time to fix that mess the right way. Below this post you will see a box to subscribe to my brand new mailing list. Since the venues to freely advertise something like a podcast are drying up (lookin' at you, Facebook!), signing up to the ROR mailing list is the best way to keep up. The ONLY time you will get an email from me is when a new episode is posted. That's it! Put your email in, click Submit, and you'll be the first to know when (and where) the next episode drops! While I'm on the self-promotion kick, you will notice that there is a new "Podcast Archive" post below this one. This will contain links and info for past episodes of Random Old Records. I'm slowly going through my files and re-uploading everything, and this will keep track of the process. There are a bunch already posted, with more coming soon! Now that all the boring babble is finished, let's get to the JAMS!
