The ALL NEW Big Wakeup Call with Ryan Gatenby

Send us a textLegendary agent and producer Shep Gordon discusses his book THEY CALL ME SUPER MENSCH (From 9-21-16).It started with a punch from Janis Joplin. It was 1968 and Shep Gordon had quit the job that had brought him to L.A. after only one day. He had about a month's worth of cash in his pocket when he checked into a Hollywood motel. The first night, he tried to “rescue” a girl he thought was in distress. That was Janis, who punched him in the mouth. With the kind of serendipity that would mark the next five decades in a remarkable career, Gordon's life as a legendary manager, agent, and producer was launched. Famous among the famous, Gordon came to wider public attention through Mike Myers's “shagadelic rock doc” Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon. Now, in THEY CALL ME SUPERMENSCH: A Backstage Pass to the Amazing Worlds of Film, Food, and Rock'n'Roll, this charismatic original tells his own version of his rollicking, good-spirited life story.

Embark on a journey through the twisting corridors of slipstream fiction with your hosts and our special guest, Susana Imaginário.  As a seasoned mythological slipstream aficionado and author, Susanna guides us through this enthralling genre where fantasy, science fiction, and literary fiction coalesce. Together with Paramita's voracious appetite for literary fiction and Jose's boundless enthusiasm for fantastical worlds, we dissect the elements that make slipstream a genre that both perplexes and captivates. We address the challenges of literary classifications, and the implications of genre-blending on authors' marketing efforts and readers' discovery processes. Our conversation steers us into the labyrinthine narratives of "Cloud Atlas" and the ergodic wonders of "House of Leaves," discussing their power to reshape the conventional storytelling experience. Such intricate structures spur a debate on their potential to inspire or alienate readers. The diverse reactions to these works raise the question of whether complexity enhances or detracts from a story's ability to forge a deep connection with its audience. The dialogue then shifts to the rich tapestry of magical realism, paying homage to Gabriel García Márquez's masterpieces and considering the cultural and historical threads that bind us to these universally human tales. As we conclude, we muse over the possibility that the quintessential work of slipstream literature is still unwritten, maybe even by someone tuning in today. Our exchange includes must-read recommendations, inviting listeners to transcend their reading boundaries and join the exploration of the weird, wonderful, and whimsically complex realm of slipstream and magical realism. Tune in to this episode for an intellectual adventure through genre boundaries, narrative intrigue, and the enchanting dance of the real with the fantastic.PageChewing.comPAGECHEWING: Comics & Manga PodcastFilm Chewing PodcastBuy me a coffeeLinktreeLogo by The GlimmerTwin Art HouseJoin Riverside.fm

Pushing Against Jim Crow The Amazing Worlds Of African American Fraternal Orders

From the 1800s through the middle of the 2Oth century, federated fraternal orders based in regularly meeting local lodges and supralocal headquarters and conventions allowed Americans of all backgrounds to combine for mutual aid and civic assertion. African Americans were super-organizers and joiners within this fraternal world. Forming federations that spanned states, regions, and often the nation as a whole, Blacks created some orders paralleling major white orders but also large numbers of their own distinctively named orders. Through these orders, they built economic security, worked for social advancement, and pushed back against the social exclusions, cultural insults, and political restrictions of Jim Crow segregation. Women played a much stronger role in African American “fraternalism” than in white variants, and Black orders had an unusually strong focus on community service, while also serving as an organizational sphere where individual male and female leaders could develop and display business and civic talent. Professor Theda Skocpol presents original research - including membership badges from Black fraternal orders - connecting mutual-aid associations in the South with the Civil Rights movement. This talk includes personal stories of amazing discoveries, along with a larger explanation of why these associations, most of them no longer with us, are an inspiring part of U.S. and African American history that must not be lost.

Blockworks is a true world leader in this space so it's a pleasure to talk to James about his company and its place in the evolution of Minecraft and using these kinds of platforms for engaging styles of education like this.I start by asking James to remember that very first time he opened up Minecraft. Shep has an autobiography called They Call Me Supermensch: A Backstage Pass ot the Amazing Worlds of Film, Food, and Rock ‘n Roll. And Mike Myers produced a documentary about him called Supermensch. Shep's ideas and marketing antics are well-known and helped bring fame and notoriety to many of his clients, most notably Alice Cooper. This isn't just another interview. Andy is digging deep into Shep's thoughts on his long and storied career. For instance, his entire outlook on his career took shape after one amazing college prank. After taking some “black beauties” with his friends, they came up with an elaborate prank announcing the arrival of a supposed foreign dignitary. Soon the papers picked up the story when one of his friends was dressing up as this esteemed person. It was then that Shep learned that we have the ability to write history. It's all in the delivery of the information. That one prank led to a long list of marketing stunts specifically designed to elevate and lengthen the careers of his clients, including Alice Cooper. Listen as Shep shares stories from his past and how they've informed his present. Not only has he come through Covid and all that it entails, but he's also a brand new dad. To say that he's had some huge shifts in perspective lately would certainly be an understatement. Though he's been interviewed many times before, this is one Shep Gordon exclusive you won't want to miss.   Show Highlights: [00:10] Shep Gordon is the greatest manager of all time. Period. Learn more! [01:36] Welcome Shep to the show and learn what drew him to Maui.  [04:02] He shares what he learned from Roger Verge about food, marketing, life, and business. If you told me a year ago that I’d be learning critical life and business lessons from the founder of a ketchup company, and that thirty to fifty thousand people would listen to our conversation, well, I’d have told you that’s impossible. But the fact that it is true proves many of the points laid out by this week’s guest Scott Norton, co-founder of Sir Kensington’s which was recently acquired by Uni-Lever. Sir Kensington’s, which makes “condiments with character” is no ordinary Ketchup company, and Scott is no ordinary founder. We talk about the most elemental aspects of business: product, relationships, sales, marketing, and culture. I love that we can do so through the lens of such a seemingly simple product, something that we use all the time with our families at a BBQ. Scott’s observations on culture, the importance of relationships in sales, and competitive edge are all memorable. But above all, I’ll remember his line: seek to learn that which cannot be taught. And I will continually return to the mental image of the Temple of Poseidon. Oh, and as a bonus we also talk about biking around Asia, which like all of Scott’s stories comes complete with thought provoking lessons. Enjoy this unique conversation with one of the most interesting people I’ve met on this journey. We begin with the history of ketchup.   For comprehensive show notes on this episode go to http://investorfieldguide.com/norton For more episodes go to InvestorFieldGuide.com/podcast. Shep Gordon is the visionary Hollywood manager, agent and producer responsible for building some of the biggest careers in entertainment, and has been named one of the “100 most influential people” by Rolling Stone magazine. The subject of the acclaimed Mike Myers-produced documentary Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon, Shep came to Los Angeles in 1968 and landed in the heart of rock and roll, instantly (and by sheer coincidence) falling in with Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and, a short time later, Alice Cooper, whom he continues to manage today. In Shep’s fascinating book, They Call me Supermensch: A Backstage Pass to the Amazing Worlds of Film, Food, and Rock 'n' Roll, he shares tales of working and befriending everyone from Groucho Marx, Blondie, Salvador Dali, Luther Vandross, Teddy Pendergrass and Michael Douglas to the Dalai Lama, Emeril Lagasse, Raquel Welch and Wolfgang Puck. The book was published in 2016 and debuted on the New York Times bestseller list.

He is beloved in the entertainment business for his kindness, honesty, and sense of service in an otherwise cut-throat industry, and it has earned him the nickname “Supermensch.” Today, Shep Gordon will reveal how checking into the right motel and a little advice from Jimi Hendrix launched his career in the music business. He’ll talk about some of the stunts he came up with to get publicity for his very first client, Alice Cooper, and how an incident with the band and a very young Cameron Crowe inspired a classic scene in the movie “Almost Famous.” He talks about taking on the notorious “chitlin’ circuit” while managing R&B singer Teddy Pendergrass, and how he invented the concept of the “celebrity chef” and made guys like Wolfgang Puck and Emeril Lagasse household names. Plus Shep Gordon discusses the high price of fame, his rules for doing “compassionate business,” and cooking for the Dalai Lama.
