Keeping It Real with Cam Marston

On this week's KIR, Cam Marston wonders if he could do the same thing for fifteen years and know, just know in his bones, that it would pay off. ----- I've just watched the documentary on Steve Martin called "Steve! A Documentary in Two Pieces." I've always liked Steve Martin. What caught my attention the most is that he did his standup act for fifteen years. The vast majority of that time, his audiences were very small. In one video clip, he's counting the number of people in the room during his act – there were fifteen people there. He got what he thought were big breaks that bombed, in one case opening for Anne Margaret in Las Vegas and after he finished his act all his belongings had been put in a box outside his dressing room. However, the last stand-up comedy act he did was at the Nassau Coliseum outside New York City where he sold it out three nights in a row – 45,000 people each night. After the third night, he walked off the stage, never to do that act ever again. He was at the top of his game. It took him fifteen years to get there. And then he was done. Question: Who of us have the will, the fortitude, to persevere for fifteen years – fifteen years - with the hope – actually, the confidence – that what we're doing will ultimately pan out. When giving up or changing course is a very real option but we chose not to do it because our vision of what could be is so strong. I'm not sure I do. How many of us can see the need for a change, or see a change coming, and get out in front of it, remain confident amongst the failure and rejection, and never waver. A number of times during the documentary Martin says that he did his act because he had few other options. The little money it brought in was all he had. Those interviewed, though, said he was waiting for society to catch up to his humor. Steve Martin changed standup and comedy and humor. He could see the change coming, but the vast majority of society wasn't aware that a change was happening. Martin saw it coming, ever so slowly, so he kept going. It's one thing to ID forthcoming changes in technology and how to get ahead of those changes to profit from new products – think Steve Jobs and the iPod – but what Steve Martin did was predict a change in the ethos of the United States following Vietnam. He had a hunch people would be different. And he kept at it. And, in time he was proven right. What's the moral of this story? Someone like that is out there amongst us right here and right now. Doing something we think is foolish, or that doesn't seem funny, or saying something that doesn't sound smart or goes against the grain of society. We ridicule them or cast them aside or, more likely, just ignore them. But they keep coming back. Perhaps, we should take a look. I'm Cam Marston and I'm just trying to Keep It Real.

Join us, Jesse and Andrew, on a fascinating tour of the iconic musical, Bye Bye Birdie. We guarantee you an enlightening journey as we trace the musical's journey from stage to screen, highlighting the original concept and its transformation to include the Elvis Presley draft plot. We'll discuss the Broadway production that ran for over 600 shows and the subsequent changes made to accommodate the movie's star, Anne Margaret. Penetrating the surface, we'll uncover the more subtle aspects including the whitewashing of characters and the shift in focus on the musical's storyline. As we dissect the film adaptation, you'll gain an understanding of the various alterations that occurred, such as the introduction of the now iconic song 'Bye Bye Birdie'. We'll evaluate the restructuring of the narrative to focus more on Ed Sullivan and critique the 1960s reviews and critical response. Together, we'll lay bare the impact of these changes on the overall structure and reception of the musical. Moving to the musical numbers, we'll dissect the lyrics of songs like "How Lovely to Be a Woman", examining the questionable message it sends across in the movie. We'll ponder over the darker implications behind the musical number 'Kids' and question the decision to omit certain plot lines from the film. Finally, we'll wrap up with our personal rating of the movie, and what we think about it. So sit back, relax, and let's explore Bye Bye Birdie together. The impact of the coronavirus pandemic on children’s education may be perceived as a justification for narrowing the curriculum at the expense of the arts and the humanities, but this conference will explore the case for preserving young children’s entitlement to as rich and diverse a curriculum as possible. Dr. Eaude’s keynote lecture will set the scene, highlighting some key issues and considering some lessons to be learnt from the period of lockdown. The subsequent presentations will focus on classroom practice, providing a spotlight on innovations which have been implemented in school and offering guidance for the future. You'll hear about Sheena and Savannah's Elvis favorites, some Elvis movie history, and what inspired the the two to start this charming series in the first place.    It all started with Dawson's Creek. Well, not the show, but the podcast with fans of the show talking about each and every episode. While Sheena and Savannah were inspired by that show's podcast, their Elvis movies podcast takes a whole other bent on the idea, focusing on the movies that really solidified the status of the king in the years after he returned from war.  The hosts even run down the list of all the world-renowned actors that were in those early films with Elvis. That's just one reason they say, be careful if you assume all the films are silly or campy. One of the films in particular featured has a really interesting connection to Casablanca.  Elvis the Actor Elvis made 31 feature films and even did a couple of concert documentaries, as well. Of those, our guests had some favorites. Our guests are particularly impressed with King Creole because it gives Elvis a real opportunity to show acting skills that were often left out in his films in favor of assumed commercial success. He portrays a character with some real depth, co-stars with Anne Margaret, and the film was directed by Michael Curtiz.  Of course, Elvis really shines in the dancing and singing sequences in his films. The ones especially worth checking out—Jailhouse Rock and Love Me Tender. The ladies say those films demonstrate his star power was really connected to his performances within the films.  The Leading Ladies Elvis' leading ladies are well-known and many went on to have pretty impressive careers themselves. Ann Margaret, Nancy Sinatra, and Shelley Fabares are just some of the names that came up in our conversation. Of particular note was Ann Margaret performing her own song and having her name in the same size font as Elvis on the movie poster—a bit controversial at the time. Nancy Sinatra also played a big role. When the ladies talked about her connect to Elvis, the former star tweeted at them a note of thanks and that she missed Elvis.  The Soundtracks The movies were really groundbreaking because the films were often just opportunities to push out more Elvis music between records. The soundtracks were 45's with 4-5 songs on them. The movie names were often connected to the title song such as "Love Me Tender". If you want to listen to some of the music that true fans often love the most, check out "Pocket Full of Rainbows" or even the song "So Close Yet So Far Away from Paradise" in the movie Harem Scarem. In fact, many of the songs we all know as classic Elvis singles came from film soundtracks and weren't released in any other form.   The Invention of the Karate Chop or The Fights Some people believe another of Elvis' many innovations was the old-style movie karate chop move. Our guests tell us about how the fights were a key part of the Elvis films. And yes, he is known for a signature karate chop move. In one movie... he may have karate chopped a Jaguar. Elvis was actually known for being a passionate practicioner of karate. He loved integrating the moves he practiced on his own into any of the fight scenes. He almost never had a stunt double. One night, he was so into practicing for a fight scene, that he stayed up really late chopping wooden blocks until he felt he got the move down for the movie scene. You also may have seen Elvis' custom Gi he had made.  Pop Culture Connections We heard a lot more about the various pop culture connections Elvis brought to our country and the world. The craziest thing to think about, is at a time when there was barely tv, no internet or youtube, no social media, etc... he was doing as many as three movies a year and keeping himself connected to his audience. He showed different variations of his work in these films while retaining his place as a star singer and performer. It was a brilliant strategy for keeping relevant and some would say, ultimately, pushed him too far. Sheena and Savannah tell us about the next episode they are producing, but you'll have to listen to hear about that   For full show notes visit memphistypehistory.com/elvis

Hosts: The Gillinator, Brandon KrumI am Handsome Stranger! Grab a whiskey (the drink, not your horse) and get some wood for the fire, because we're watching 1979's "The Villain" starring Kirk Douglas, his horse Whiskey (all 20 of them), Anne Margaret (and her cleavage), the ever-so-flamboyant Paul Lynde as an ever-so-racist Nervous Elk, and of course our boy Arnold. Watch along as Gillinator plays the Whiskey drinking game, and we question whether the actors were drunk as they filmed this weird western/comedy/cartoon homage. But then, in an epiphany, we realize that The Villain may actually be a prequel to the entire Terminator franchise. Like ARN?
