Former San Diegan / Saturday Night Live alum KYLE MOONEY talks about his new album, THE REAL ME -- available now.
Megan is flying solo this week, as Dave and Evan couldn't make it (I miss you two!). First, Megan reviews THE UGLY STEPSISTER (1:54), Emilie Blichfeldt's Norwegian fairy-tale horror film starring Lea Myren and Thea Sofie Loch Næss, which played at this year's Boston Underground Film Festival. With lush costumes and production design, it's a compelling and gruesome Cinderella retelling that critiques beauty standards. Then, Megan talks about THE WEDDING BANQUET (19:25), Andrew Ahn's queer rom-com (a remake of Ang Lee's 1993 film) starring Kelly Marie Tran, Lily Gladstone, Bowen Yang, and Han Gi-chan, about a gay man who offers to marry his lesbian friend to pay for her partner's IVF treatments and so he can get a green card. It's a sweet and tender film with an excellent cast. Lastly, Megan discusses SINNERS (33:41), Ryan Coogler's vampire horror film, starring Michael B. Jordan, Miles Caton, Hailee Steinfeld, and Wunmi Mosaku. Set in the 1930s, it follows two twin brothers opening a juke joint and the evil that follows them. With gorgeous cinematography and a hypnotic score, it's a visceral, moody, and captivating film. And on this week's Patreon bonus episode, Megan talks about two newly streaming 2024 genre movies, one set in the 1980s and one in the 1990s: Kyle Mooney's sci-fi horror comedy Y2K and Joe DeBoer and Kyle McConaghy's horror film DEAD MAIL!

Y2K is another lame A24 movie but this time it's directed by unfunny SNL cast member, KYLE MOONEY.
It's December 31st, 1999. The last party before Y2K. That's the setting for the new A24 movie written and directed by Kyle Mooney. Mooney is known for being a Saturday Night Live cast member from 2013 to 2022. In his directorial debut, he directs Jaeden Martell, Rachel Zegler, Julian Dennison, Tim Heidecker, and Alicia Silverstone. Mooney is also in the film, along with somebody special who shows up in the third act that we won't spoil here. The movie features a stacked late 90s soundtrack. This could be a late 90s nostalgia slam dunk, but is it? We'll let you know in this packed episode we assembled for Y2K!

This Christmas Day, The Filmlosophers are taking a trip back to a simpler time… a time of dial-up internet, frosted tips, and widespread panic about the impending digital apocalypse. They're unwrapping 2024's Y2K, a film that explores the unique anxieties and cultural landscape of the late 90s/early 2000s. As you unwrap your presents, join them as they unwrap the layers of this nostalgic throwback, contrasting the warm, fuzzy feelings of the holidays with the cold, hard fear of technological collapse. Was it really that bad? Or are we just looking back with rose-tinted, pixelated glasses? (Contains spoilers for Y2K.)
MERRY CHRISTMAS EVE EVERYONEIn this episode of Fly Over Film Country, hosts Isaac and Olivia dive into Kyle Mooney's horror comedy film Y2K, exploring its premise, character dynamics, and standout performances, particularly that of Julian Dennison. The conversation flows from personal anecdotes about Y2K to a broader discussion on the film's impact and the nostalgia it evokes. In this engaging conversation, Olivia and Isaac explore various themes surrounding music, film, and the evolving landscape of superhero movies. They discuss the chaotic atmosphere of music festivals, the impact of iconic bands like Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park, and the challenges faced by young actors like Jaden Martell in avoiding typecasting. The duo also shares their excitement for the upcoming Superman movie, analyzing the trailer's emotional depth and the significance of costume design. Finally, they express optimism for the future of superhero films, particularly the Fantastic Four, while reflecting on the importance of storytelling in cinema.

The couples paired up in Martin Ritt's 1961 musical drama Paris Blues were more than just smart casting. Real life married paramours Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward play Ram and Lillian, a jazz musician and the woman he falls in love with him. And Sidney Poitier and Diahann Carroll, real life lovers at the time, play Eddie and Connie. Carroll and Poitier had carried on an extramarital affair on their previous film Porgy and Bess and continued during the making of Paris Blues. Both eventually stayed married and ended the affair after Paris Blues was completed. Y2K! Dumb, satisfying fun or an apocalyptic mess? Kyle Mooney's directorial debut is paired with an out-of-nowhere treat: Brigsby Bear (2017). This Mooney-starring film turns out to be the best surprise of the week. Comedian Blake Trevino stops in to chop it up, and we drink two great beers from Sierra Nevada and Jester King.
For episode 84, the boys are back in the studio to review the directorial debut of SNL writer and cast member, Kyle Mooney. Y2K is a tale as old as time; if time were only 24 years old. A coming of age romance about two young people from different worlds who have to work together to bring down the machines that have begun killing their friends and family members. The singularity. The creature design. A mind blowing cameo. What's not to love? We highly recommend this one. Peep the pod for our full review. Crack open a couple of cold ones with us, leave us a 5 star review on Apple Podcasts and let us know what we should review next.

Awards season is here and we're here for it on Breakfast All Day. First, we review "Nightbitch," starring Amy Adams as a stay-at-home mom who escapes the doldrums of her daily routine by turning into a dog and rampaging through the neighborhood. We have very different opinions on the latest film from Marielle Heller. In theaters now. Then, we discuss "Y2K," a comedy/disaster movie set on the eve of the millennium. A bunch of teenagers try to survive when the machines rise up and wreak havoc. Kyle Mooney's film is based on an idea that wears thin pretty quickly. In theaters now. Finally, during our usual Friday livestream, we talked about all the awards season developments that occurred over the past week: Spirit Award nominations, Gothams, NY Film Critics Circle and more. It's gonna be a wild one! We won't be going live next Friday because Alonso is traveling, but keep an eye (and an ear) out for details on our annual Christmas Movie Livestream on Dec. 17. Thanks for sharing some of your time with us during these busy days! * The Holiday Blend is here from Coffee Bros.! We love all of their roasts, but this is one of their very best.
