Dewar MacLeod is a Californian by way of Canada. He teaches in New Jersey now, but he grew up in L.A. in the 60s and 70s. And it was a 1969 album--the Who's rock opera Tommy--that blew his mind. In his latest book, Tommy, Trauma, and Postwar Youth Culture, he looks at what Tommy meant for the 60s, composer Pete Townshend, and the legions of Who fans who continue to love it to this day. A double album that put the Who into the ranks of premier rock bands, Tommy is a story of a "deaf, dumb, and blind boy" who goes on a spiritual journey. Along the way, he meets unsavory characters such as Cousin Kevin, Uncle Ernie, and the Acid Queen before achieving enlightenment and starting his own religion full of rebellious followers.  Tommy was not only a smash record, it became transcendent when the Who played it live. It also inspired a memorable, albeit over-the-top 1975 Ken Russell film and a Broadway and London musical. Pete Townshend has talked about the album often since it came out. But why did he not want to talk to Dewar about it? And how consistent are Pete's takes on is own songs? Should we trust what Pete has had to say? And what does the album tell us about his own trauma and that of his generation? Dewar takes on many complex themes in his book. But then again, Tommy is a complex album. While bands don't often do double album rock operas anymore, Tommy addresses issues that are still relevant in the 21st century. In a world facing existential threats (as always?), aren't we all a little traumatized by now? So, put on your headphones and prepare for a true Amazing Journey!

She graced the silver screen, portraying the unforgettable Acid Queen in The Who's "Tommy" (1975) and the post-apocalyptic warlord Aunty Entity in "Mad Max: Beyond the Thunderdome" (1985). She also appeared as the Mayor in Arnold Schwarzenegger's "Last Action Hero" (1993) and made a notable cameo in the ill-fated film adaptation of "Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" by The Bee Gees (1978).On television, Tina brightened various TV variety shows, including The Cher Show and Hollywood Nights with Olivia Newton-John. As the first black woman to grace the cover of Rolling Stone, Tina Turner shattered boundaries and solidified her place as one of the best-selling recording artists of all time.Today, we come together to celebrate the extraordinary life of Tina Turner. In honor of her legacy, we invite you to enjoy this encore presentation of "The Tea on Tina Turner," which originally aired in April of 2021.------Everyone expected 1984 to be a strange dystopian future, but it turned out to be an amazing year for pop culture with Tina Turner reigning supreme as the Queen of Rock and Roll.Although the press described Tina Turner's chart topping album Private Dancer as a comeback, Tina considered it her debut album, free from the control and abuse she faced from her ex-husband Ike Turner. In the new documentary film, Tina, the Queen of Rock and Roll has the final word on her extraordinary life from growing poor and Black in Nutbush, TN, to her relationship with Ike Turner and how she broke free to become one of the world's most celebrated artists. The new documentary is gonna get you hooked on Tina all over again. But despite it being an in depth look at the pop icon's life, many amazing things were briefly touched on or left on the cutting room floor.Today is Tina Turner day! We're looking at the life and legacy of the Queen of Rock and Roll, from the incredible year she had back in 1984, to her rock and roll roots with Ike Turner. Who made her iconic wigs? How did Cher save Tina's career? And what celebrities made her want to say “you better be good to me.”

Hi everybody and welcome to this week's episode of Attendance Bias. I am your host, Brian Weinstein. In the film Almost Famous, which I'm guessing is a favorite among many Phish fans, there's a scene toward the very beginning where the hero's older sister leaves home and secretly donates her extensive record collection to her younger brother. He sorts through them, settling on The Who's Tommy and plays “Sparks.” That scene is the literal transition from the character being an immature young wallflower, into a young man with solid musical tastes and a sure sense of what he was put on earth to do. While today's guest is not Cameron Crowe, that scene from my favorite movie came to mind more than once as we spoke. Today's guest is AJ Masko, and he chose to speak about Phish's performance of Down With Disease into While My Guitar Gently Weeps from July 15, 2000 at the Polaris Amphitheater. AJ was not exactly brand new to Phish, but he was still in his honeymoon period where every new discovery from the band takes you back to your classic rock phase that you cherished and loved for so many years. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, then don't worry; you'll still be able to appreciate today's conversation. On top of that, AJ also captures the feeling of late-1.0; the layered ambient music, the exploding population of the scene, the dangers at the edges, and the post-Cypress glow of the entire Phish experience. Even though we didn't see many of the same shows or tours, AJ and I had similar Phish feelings around the time of Y2K, and this conversation was a true pleasure. So let's join AJ to talk about 11-minute jams, the need for more late 1.0 soundboards, and godlike ferris wheels, as we discuss  Down with Disease into While My Guitar Gently Weeps from July 15, 2000 at The Polaris Amphitheater.

The first in our series called Our Lives in Movies where we revisit different stages in our lives and choose movies that impacted us at that time.  In this the first of the series, we explore a movie from childhood that made an impression on us. Azed & Jay, being from different generations, have very different selections but, as often happens, there are overlapping thematic tropes in both of their individual choices. Azed, being a child of the 70's, remembers the impact of Ken Russel's film adaptation of The Who's Tommy, while Jay being a child of the 80's remembers the impact of Robert Altman's Popeye.  Other topics covered here: How VHS changed the whole game with movies, How kid's today just don't get it, Shelly Duvall in the Multiverse, and Anne Margaret as Azed's 12 year old masturbatory fantasy woman.

The 47th Annual Tony Awards were hosted by Liza Minnelli on June 6, 1993. Presented at the Gershwin Theatre, the theme of the ceremony was to commemorate the 100th anniversary of theatre in Times Square. Heading into the ceremony, Kiss of the Spider Woman and The Who's Tommy led the pack with 11 nominations each, followed by Blood Brothers with six and The Goodbye Girl with five. This season there were no musicals nominated for Best Revival. Well, Mo, the 1992-93 season saw the inauguration of the US's 42nd president, President Bill Jefferson Clinton and the installation of the nation's first female attorney general, Janet Reno. Outside of those momentous occasions, the country was mainly dealing with ongoing issues, both abroad and domestically: The United States was still dealing with the aftermath of the Gulf War, waged by the previous administration, and with the nation finally acknowledging HIV/AIDS within the last few years as a nationwide epidemic, the US found itself playing catch-up to dealing with a plague that was ravaging its citizens. In New York, the Broadway industry and community were heavily laden by the effects of the AIDS epidemic, as we see in the telecast. Red ribbons everywhere; emotion overtaking hosts, presenters, and recipients alike; a nominated performance directly addressing the disease AND its stigma; and even an honorary Tony being given to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS for its leadership in the industry's fight against the disease... we ultimately find a community in mourning, even in this celebratory ceremony of the last hundred years of Broadway.

Ranking The Beatles

There's always been something about The Beatles that made them really shine on screen. Their charisma and ease on camera seems to come from a rounded appreciation of the arts, including literature and theatre. That they only ever released one cover of a Broadway tune is interesting, especially when you consider it's kind of what got them their shot with George Martin, but that's what happened with "Til There Was You." They really nail it on this song from The Music Man, despite John's own misgivings, thanks to a gorgeous vocal from Paul, and sublime guitar work from George. Given their ease and apparent comfort and draw to acting, one wonders why they didn't dive further into that side of the arts. Who better to discuss the impact of theatre and literature on The Beatles than with a two-time Tony Award winner? (He's half an EGOT winner too thanks to a Grammy, but who's keeping track?) Actor/musician Michael Cerveris joins us to discuss the impact being raised with an appreciation of multiple forms of the arts creates a well rounded performer, and how The Beatles on-screen magnetism gives their fieldwork a leg up on competitors like Elvis. We also discuss Michael getting advice from Sir George Martin on how to handle Roger Daltry's vocal parts when he starred as Tommy in The Who's Broadway version of the famous rock opera (while under the watchful eye of Pete Townsend no less), college singalongs to Sgt. Pepper with other actor friends, and how playing a musician on TV can actually help you realize that legitimately ARE a musician. Michael's band Loose Cattle has a brand new single out November 13th, a cover of David Bowie's "Heroes," which you can get at their website and all streaming outlets. Today's guests are longtime friend of the club Alice Ripley and her frequent collaborator Christopher Schelling. Alice, who has been hailed by The New York Times as “simply astonishing,” is a consummate Broadway star, a versatile film and TV actor, and a distinguished singer-songwriter. She earned her first Tony Award nomination in 1997 with her brilliant work in the legendary Side Show, before winning the 2009 Tony Award for “Best Actress in a Musical '' for her performance as Diana Goodman in the Pulitzer Prize-winning Next to Normal. She has also originated roles in such Broadway productions as The Who's Tommy, Sunset Boulevard, and, most recently, American Psycho. Alice is joined today by her collaborator of nearly 40 years, Christopher Schelling, who is also a founding member of Ripley, the band formed by Alice in 2001. Christopher has served as musical director and manager for a number of other pop rock/cabaret performers. Additionally, his literary agency represents such bestselling authors as Augusten Burroughs, Rainbow Rowell and Kathy Valentine of the Go-Go's. Alice and Christopher sat down with our Marketing Associate, Adrian Karnani, to discuss memories from these iconic original casts, revisiting Sunset Boulevard, and creating original music for the last decade. Today I'm chatting with actor and singer Jim Newman. In addition to a lengthy Broadway resume (Hands on a Hardbody, Curtains, Minnelli on Minnelli, Steep Pier, Sunset Boulevard, and The Who's Tommy), Jim is also currently ‘The Cowboy' in a very iconic 70s/80s disco band you know very well. Jim also works extensively in TV, film and web series. In fact, Jim has been featured in two of my favorite award-winning web series - 'Hustling' and this year's 'After Forever,' currently on Amazon Video. Another digital series I've followed for a couple of years now is 'Daddyhunt the Serial,' which chronicles the story a hunky handsome ‘daddy' we'd all like to date (played by Jim), and his younger boyfriend, played by BJ Gruber. Since its debut in 2016, 'Daddyhunt the Serial' has become a big hit all around the world. I recently got to chat with Jim about 'Daddyhunt,' his iconic disco band and how social media has become such a big part of being a working actor these days - in both good and bad ways. Hit the play button and take a listen to my chat with this urban cowboy, Jim Newman.
