On April 2, renewed excavation began in Jerusalem's biblical royal quarter in preparation for reconstruction work to highlight the ancient city's famed past. The three-to- four-week excavation is the first return to the area, known as the Ophel, since the excavations led by the late Dr. Eilat Mazar in 2009–2010. This current excavation is led by Hebrew University's Prof. Yosef Garfinkel, staffed by the Armstrong Institute of Biblical Archaeology (AIBA) and funded by AIBA alongside Daniel Mintz and Meredith Berkman. On today's program, host Christopher Eames interviews aiba staff member Brent Nagtegaal who was on the 2009 excavation and is helping coordinate the excavation this year. https://armstronginstitute.org/1217-excavating-the-ophel-water-gate

During this episode of the Red-Haired Archaeologist® Podcast, learn about the Northern Kingdom's most infamous king and queen: Ahab and Jezebel. Find out where Samaria's capital city was built, how Phoenician religion and trade affected the nation, and why we think of Jezebel as a seductress instead of a powerful politician. President Donald Trump is in court. We are learning more about our legal system and the rule of law in America. Are we learning it too late? America shares much of its approach to its law, its ideals, its culture, its institutions, its movies with Britain, Canada and related nations. But what is it that makes these nations so closely related? And why are these modern nations related at all to a certain ancient people and their ancient faith from their ancient book? Why has that ancient book been such an enduring influence on America and Britain? Why not another book? Why not other nations? Is it more than a religious book? One fairly new institution is researching those exact questions. Meet the Armstrong Institute of Biblical Archaeology. How are the American justice system, Britain, Israel, the Bible and the law related? Eve Harow visits the Israel branch of the Oklahoma based Armstrong Institute to talk with archaeologist Brent Nagtegaal about their work digging in Jerusalem. They have the personal libraries of the late, great archaeologist Dr. Eilat Mazar and her grandfather Benjamin, with whom they found many important artifacts over the decades. The last week has been full of news reports of incredible discoveries, including a Great Revolt half shekel coin they excavated in the Ophel just south of the Temple Mount. Archaeology is getting more interesting and multi-disciplinary by the dig; nowhere is it more exciting than in our ancient capital.
Violence in Jerusalem Overnight, Israel's capital saw its worst violence in over a year as Palestinians in East Jerusalem riot. The uptick in violence comes just before Israel's November 1 election. The violence and other recent decisions by caretaker Prime Minister Yair Lapid have a return to power for Benjamin Netanyahu looking more likely. Get a behind-the-scenes look at the grand opening of the Armstrong Institute of Biblical Archaeology. Let the Stones Speak
The new prime minister of Britain is Liz Truss. Britain is facing an energy crisis as it heads into winter, soaring costs of living and other problems. How might a Truss government handle these problems? We look at her policies, promises and cabinet picks and analyze what we might expect in the time ahead. Europe has been trying to boycott Russian energy for its war in Ukraine. But reports are that in seeking alternative sources, Europe is actually buying heavily marked up Russian energy from a middleman: China. This past Sunday, the Armstrong Institute of Biblical Archaeology opened its doors in Jerusalem to the public. We talk about its latest archaeological excavation, its new home, how the grand opening went, and its next steps. And I give you a couple of simple rules that help ensure you're giving your body the right fuel. [00:30] European Parliamentarians: Trudeau Is a Dictator (14 minutes)In February, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau froze the bank accounts of Canadians who donated as little as $50 to the trucker Freedom Convoy in Canada. Yesterday, members of European Parliament denounced him as a dictator. One German M.E.P. called Trudeau a “perverted” authoritarian and a “disgrace to democracy.” An M.E.P. from Croatia said Trudeau is running a “dictatorship of the worst kind.” These and other members of European Parliament see through the hypocrisy of Justin Trudeau's authoritarian regime.[14:00] Ketanji Brown Jackson Hearings Continue (14 minutes)Senate hearings for the nomination of judge Ketanji Brown Jackson are still ongoing as Senate Republicans continue probing her past record as a soft-on-crime judge, particularly when it comes to child-sex offenders. The legacy media has been condemning Republicans for revealing Jackson's past records as a judge, but these Senate hearings stand in stark contrast to how viciously the left attacked Brett Kavanaugh for “crimes” he did not commit. [28:40] Ancient Hebrew ‘Curse Tablet' Discovered (5 minutes)We begin the second half of today's show with a breaking report from the Armstrong Institute of Biblical Archaeology! An ancient Hebrew “curse tablet” was discovered at Joshua's altar on Mt. Ebal, providing archaeological proof of the authenticity and authority of the Holy Bible. [33:25] Bible Study: Awake out of Sleep (21 minutes)The Apostle Paul refers to this end time as perilous and dangerous. He also warns that “it is high time to awake out of sleep” and that we should “put on the Lord Jesus Christ.” In today's study, we discuss the kind of spiritual urgency and energy we ought to have in these days just prior to Christ's Second Coming.
When persistent pain invaded Gary Stern's gut, doctors at two local hospitals focused on the digestive-tract disease he'd had a decade earlier. They didn't listen to him insist this felt different, and they didn't order a standard test to check for an ulcer. The misdiagnosis triggered a cascade of surgeries and suffering that took his life. David Black wrote the book Ripped Apart to tell the story. Gary's wife Carol never left his side: “Doctors need to realize it's ok to make a mistake. But don't cover it up. And that's what they did with Gary. And that's what ended up being his demise.” And neurologist Dr. David Newman-Toker of the Johns Hopkins ‘Center for Diagnostic Excellence' tells how patients can guard against medical misdiagnosis. Reconstructing Healthcare: Innovative Solutions For Employers To Lower Their Healthcare Costs
In this episode, Michael introduces Dr. Simon Mathews, a distinguished researcher, clinician, author, and Chief Medical Officer at Vivante Health. He is also a practicing gastroenterologist at the John Hopkins School of Medicine and the Head of Clinical Innovation at John Hopkin’s Armstrong Institute of Patient Safety and Quality. Simon’s research centers around understanding and improving the quality of digital health for patients. Unfortunately, he finds that the key issues in healthcare revolve around inefficiency, fragmentation, and a lack of a team-based approach that is centered around the patient’s best interest. This inspired him to work with Vivante Health, so patients with digestive issues could get the personalized, tech-forward support they need to heal. And with digestive disorders—everything from reflux to IBS to autoimmune disorders—making up a burden of $136 billion dollars on an annual basis, it’s clear that there’s a serious need. Vivante Health serves the large, underappreciated, and sometimes stigmatized realm of digestive disorders with a comprehensive and personalized digital platform. Patients are provided with a care team, including a licensed dietician and health coach, and their progress is supported with app reminders, appointment support, check-ins, and progress reports. Although tech is leveraged to best support the patient and their results, it’s the care team outreach and their personal touch that bridges the gap for truly positive user experience and improved outcomes. WIHI - A Podcast from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement
Date: April 18, 2019 Featuring: Thomas H. Gallagher, MD, Professor, Department of Medicine, University of Washington; Associate Chair, Patient Care Quality, Safety, and Value Allen Kachalia, MD, JD, Director, Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality; Senior Vice President for Patient Safety and Quality, Johns Hopkins Medicine Description: When a patient is unintentionally harmed during medical treatment, how should organizations respond? Not that long ago, steps like these were unthinkable and, from a risk manager's perspective, totally unwise. Today these practices are at the core of what are called communication and resolution programs (or CRPs), and their architects say there's been a significant uptick in US health systems using them. Our guests are two leading experts on CRPs, Tom Gallagher and Allen Kachalia. They and a team of researchers have been teasing out the reasons why so many health care leaders are committed to the principles of CRPs, but hesitant to deploy the practices. If you've been wondering what's been going on with CRPs and new ways forward, this WIHI is for you.
