Following on from our previous episode of the Bardcast's mini-series on euthanasia in film, novel and drama: helping people imagine the out-workings of government-assisted dying in order to oppose the Leadbetter Bill, Sarah de Nordwall and her guest Robert Cassidy have an energetic discussion of the remarkable 1907 novel “Lord of the World” by Robert Hugh Benson and explore the principles at work in a society that produces the “strange fruit” of state sanctioned euthanasia. Learn about the tragic and prescient story of 18 year old Mabel and what she learns at the end…that her society could never have helped her imagine. If you would like to be part of the Write for Life Academy please contact Sarah at sarah@sarahdenordwall.com

Can films and novels help us fight the battle against the multiple dangers of governments allowing assisted suicide? Creatives are often prophetic and their warnings tell truths imaginatively that others might miss. This week the Bardcast returns with a dynamic conversation between Sarah de Nordwall our Bardcast host and charismatic Glaswegian Robert Cassidy, who taught theology and philosophy in America and Austria, to discuss the powerful but tender film from Japan “Plan 75.”A film or novel can be an essential thought experiment. Let's think together. If you want to have a new conversation with friends and MPs about the unhappy societal changes that take place when forms of assisted suicide become legal then enjoy and share this Bardcast episode with them and do watch the film too!If you know of great art that that warns us imaginatively about issues around governments allowing or even encouraging assisted suicide, then do write in to sarah@sarahdenordwall.comThis miniseries continues till the Leadbetter bill is voted on this April.

In Episode 26 of the Bardcast we begin with Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah and then consider the turning point of the incarnation, through a midrash style dialogue poem The Making of Mankind. In a lighthearted style, this imagined dialogue between God and Lucifer explores the enthusiasm God has for life and the glowering cynicism and “proposal” of Lucifer. We reflect on the value of returning to our early work and seeing the “call” in the themes that have inspired our “interpretive act” that is the gift of writing. A writing prompt follows and you are encouraged to send in a dialogue. The version of God and Luci that you'll hear on the Bardcast is taken from Sarah's CD “Lipstick is a Spiritual Experience” that is available on https://sarahdenordwall.com/shop/

In this experience of Bardschool on air, Sarah and Tim explore the themes of Ep 24, asking what can educate our desire, in what way are evil choices really due to a lack of imagination and what makes creativity virtuous? What is the opposite of creativity? The Christian contemplative who is creative is seen to be essential to building a culture that is not dangerous to the human person. With insights from Godfrey Orr, aged 16 and Sarah's poem “If your name was a temple Mary,” we begin this new season with a fresh sense of mission founded on the love of goodness and the chance to turn suffering into a meaning that brings life. In this episode of the Bardcast Sarah traverses the territory of how we uncover the real and survive immense disasters, from the experience or Takashi Nagai in Nagasaki to the moments of our own lives when the transcendent becomes viscerally present to us. A poem from Valerie Anthony Marie captures the intimacy of God's presence in the tenderness of familial relationship, whilst Sarah's poems look at how beauty is the enemy of chaos and childhood memories evoke the existence of eternal happiness. Be encouraged to learn beautiful poems off by heart and write from your experience of moments of revelation in a narrative style that is all your own.  THE BARDCAST airs live and can be listened to on www.RadioMariaEngland.uk or digital radio in London, Bristol, South Birmingham and Cambridge at 3:15pm after the Divine Mercy Chaplet on Sundays and 8pm on Fridays. “…And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” (John 1:14) During Advent how are we to respond to God's divine condescension, His supreme act of love and humility, His drawing near to us - He who dwells in light unapproachable? One way may be through bringing words of our own into being, musing on how we can (and cannot!) speak of this wonderful mystery, the Incarnation. Sarah de Nordwall, in the fifth Bardcast, asks us to do just that! Also in this episode we are reminded of the vocation of a bard - to speak truth without fear - and just how important that is when lives are at stake if we do not.  Podcasts collide this week as Mark and Nicole welcome actor/directors/scholars Lisa Ann Goldsmith and Owen Thompson of the award winning podcast "The Bardcast - It's Shakespeare You Dick!" to the lighter side of the dark side. Lisa Ann and Owen discussed the amount of dick jokes and sex in Shakespeare's work, how technology is proving he wrote his plays and also that he likely was a stoner and a bit of a thug. They break down the good and the bad in the new Tragedy of Macbeth and other Shakespearean films. Lisa Ann talks about starring in the show "Chicks with Dicks" (the dick is not where you would think) and Russell Crowe being a bit of a diva until you stand up to him. Owen talked about directing immersive theater, what it was like to cast legendary author Quentin Crisp in drag and how their podcast got its provocative name from bikers at a Renaissance Fair and more... Need some more podcasts on your list? Castologists are on it! This week Liz finds the funny in life’s blah with The Hilarious World of Depression, Nick looks at the slimy belly of the Sydney underworld with No Gangsters in Paradise, and Zane gets down to some olde worlde music with The Knowne World Bardcast. As always, after all that, the Castologist review the podcasts they recommended last week.Liz Recommends - The Hilarious World of Depressionhttps://www.hilariousworld.org/aboutA show about clinical depression...with laughs? Well, yeah. Depression is an incredibly common and isolating disease experienced by millions, yet often stigmatized by society. The Hilarious World of Depression is a series of frank, moving, and, yes, funny conversations with top comedians who have dealt with this disease, hosted by veteran humorist and public radio host John Moe. Join guests such as Maria Bamford, Paul F. Tompkins, Andy Richter, and Jen Kirkman to learn how they’ve dealt with depression and managed to laugh along the way.The Hilarious World of Depression is not medical treatment and should not be seen as a substitute for therapy or medication. But it is a chance to gain some insight, have a few laughs, and realize that people with depression are not alone and that together, we can all feel a bit betterFor both: any eps that look good.https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-hilarious-world-of-depression/id1181589175Nick Recommends - No Gangsters in ParadiseAt the turn of the millennium, Western Sydney was a terrifying gangland. At the heart of the frenzy was the Darwiche-Razzak family conflict – a Romeo-and-Juliet style tragedy complicated by honour codes, politics and drive-by shootings. Journalist Mahmood Fazal draws on his own experiences as a gang member to tell the inside story of Sydney’s Lebanese gang wars, to pinpoint why young Muslims just like him commit their lives to violence.Fazal delves into the city’s cultural divide, the special police task force that dealt with the conflict, and what life is really like behind bars. Tough questions emerge from the investigation: Why did these young people re-enact in Australia the experience of a Middle-Eastern war they never knew and which their parents hoped to leave behind? What role did prejudice play in the police’s response to the conflict? And how did Eddie Darwiche get his hands on ten rocket launchers? For both: From the starthttps://www.audible.com.au/pd/No-Gangsters-in-Paradise-Audiobook/B07Y8NG6LPZane Recommends - The Knowne World Bardcasthttps://knowneworldbardcast.comThe Knowne World Bardcast is a podcast for the populace of the Knowne World of the Society for Creative Anachronism. Our new episode is about some Shakespeare books.Kill All the Lawyers?: Shakespeare's Legal Appeal Narrow interest matter, but well written and some interesting sections Shakespeare: The Invention of the Human Full of opinions, some of them insightful, some of them outrageously unfounded. The book never actually explains what the "invention of the human" is, or how it happened. Shakespeare in Kabul A very good book about a story in Afghanistan that isn't about terror or war. Lots of good details about what went into this very unusual production of Love's Labours Lost. How Shakespeare Changed Everything Mostly wrong, occasionally interesting. Should have been titled What's the Minimum Word Count for a Book? or All this Shakespeare Research Must Be Worth Something! Our next scheduled episode will be about Hamlet, but we may have a surprise episode before then!

A new month, and a new episode of BardCast! This one is about Ben Jonson, he was a pretty cool guy, if rather stuck-up. Please respond to our newest poll, while you're here! This is one of the better sources of Jonson's works. Things I forgot to mention this episode:Ben Jonson was probably a bricklayer before he became a professional writer. It's not for sure, but it's the most likely job. Ben Jonson once got in trouble for writing a semi-treasonous play, and he learned from that never to write against the monarchy. To Celia,Drink to me only with thine eyesAnd I will pledge with mine. Or leave a kiss but in the cupAnd I'll not look for wine. The thirst that from the soul doth riseDoth ask a drink divine; But might I of Jove's nectar sup,I would not change for thine.I sent thee late a rosy wreath,Not so much hon'ring thee As giving it a hope that thereIt could not withered be;But thou thereon did'st only breathe,And sent'st it back to me,Since when it grows and smells, I swearNot of itself, but thee.(Thanks, Wikipedia!)
