And on to today’s episode.Today my guest is editor and journalist, Gyan Yankovich. Now a little disclaimer that this interview was recorded earlier this year, in May. Now that’s a few months in normal times, but in 2020? Well, let’s just say a lot has changed. When we recorded, Gyan was living in New York in the midst for a terrifying first wave and strict lockdown. She was also the managing editor of renowned fashion turned culture site, Man Repeller. Since we spoke, there have been a succession of changes - a callout, a redesign and then, most recently, the announcement of the closure of the site. For more context read this. Before that, Gyan moved back to Australia and is now the Managing Editor of Junkee. If you grew up reading Aussie magazines in the 20teens, you’ll no doubt recognise Gyan’s face. Born in Bathurst, before moving to Sydney to pursue a career in the glossy world of magazines, Gyan was a beauty editor for the likes of Cleo, Cosmo and Dolly before moving to digital to help form Buzzfeed Australia’s founding team. She is brilliant, talented and she has the best and longest natural lashes I have ever seen.We talked through the mascaras that bookmark her beauty journey, the legend of the office tanning salon for beauty editors, applying foundation with your fingers and what exactly are the Saturday spirals. If you enjoy this episode, please rate and write a review on Apple Podcasts or subscribe on Spotify if you haven’t already. We Built This Life

The We Built This Life podcast has been around for one year! (Plus a few months, but that's a small detail...) When I started this podcast in May 2019, my goal was to complete 10 episodes. And in May 2020 I reached that goal. I’m calling this collection of episodes “Season 1” this, Episode 11, celebrates the 10 stories told so far. The first six lessons come from the amazing guests who have been on this show, and the next four lessons come from my own experience starting something new (and even though this new thing for me is podcasting, I think the lessons could apply to anyone starting something new, whether it be a business, program, or something else entirely). If you’ve never listened to We Built This Life before, this episode can also serve as a brief summary of sorts of the first season. Lessons From This Episode: It’s okay to pivot your career (and pivot it back again). Be honest with yourself about how you feel about money and what it means to you so you can set goals accordingly. Trust your intuition. You can build a business with kids at home. You also can build a business with limited time (even though the progress might be slower.) When you hit roadblocks in your business, try making a little tweak and things might fall into place. Get more mileage out of work you’ve already done. Know yourself and design your business around that. Don’t take anything too personally. Set goals for your season of life. Does budget and more expensive makeup get made in the same factory?....Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the award-nominated beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick.I’m your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart. Each episode, I sit down with a guest and ask them about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them. The ones they’d take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off too.Maybe it’s the first beauty product they ever bought, the one that gives them their signature look, or the perfume that instantly sparks a memory of a special place or person.Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today.Thank you for the feedback on last week’s address of Coronavirus. Obviously even in the space of a week, things have changed dramatically. Again, while done remotely over the phone as my partner works in hospital so I’ve been implementing social distancing for a little while, this interview was conducted before things escalated, and as I’m trying to do with most of my episodes, does not talk about the virus. Instead, I hope it can be a brief respite for the overload but essential updates of information.Today, my guest is Sarah Laidlaw, award-winning hair and makeup artist and Hair and Makeup Director of Priceline. And I really do mean award-winning; Sarah has won Australia’s prestigious Session Stylist of the Year title no less than five times. She’s had work published in top local and international magazines, worked with some of the best photographers, celebrities and has experience on everything from TV shows to editorial to music videos to runways. It’s been a glittering 29 years with no end in sight. It was also a complete joy to talk to someone who is so obviously passionate about what she does - you’ll hear it in her voice. We talked about her inherited love for chapstick, working with celebrities, why an eyelash applicator is a complete game changer and, my favourite, she busts a popular myth about the price tag on makeup products. As Priceline celebrates its Festival of You, running until March 26, we also had a really interesting conversation about visibility of women over 40 in media and beauty advertising, and she shared an Instagram account celebrating women over 50 you need to follow. It’s certainly brightening my feed.As always if you enjoy this episode, please subscribe, rate five stars and write a review. Do you really need sheet masks for your bum? And what's the reality of being a beauty expert over 50 on Instagram?Hello and welcome back to Beauty Island, the beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick.I’m your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart. Each episode, I sit down with a guest and ask them about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them. Maybe it’s the product that reminds them of their mum, the beauty product that defined their teens or the perfume that instantly sparks a memory of a special place or person.Along the way we find out more about their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today.Today’s episode is the last of my london series that I recorded when i was in the UK the other month. My guest is Jane Cunningham, who you might know as a british beauty blogger. Or rather The British Beauty Blogger. She has almost 40,000 Instagram followers, with hundreds of thousands of views on the blog she started over a decade ago. She’s written for The Guardian, The Financial Times, Metro, The Express and many more. She very kindly offered to come to me in London when I was staying with my cousins - shoutout to Andy and Miki for letting me turn their living room into a pop up podcast studio!. The sun was shining on an August weekday when we spent an hour on the sofa chatting all things beauty. We talked how influencer and makeup brand collaborations really work, why red lipstick isn’t for her, the ridiculousness of face masks for your bum, and had one of the most interesting discussions I’ve ever had on the attitude the beauty industry has towards older women and whether it’s changing. Plus, she shares her 8 chosen products including the extortionately expensive lip balm that she just can’t stop buying. If you enjoy listening to Beauty island, please subscribe, and rate and review on Apple Podcasts. Religiously read Girlfriend magazine as a teen? You're about to fan girl with this week's guest, Sarah Tarca.Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick.I’m your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart, and each episode I sit down with a guest to ask them about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them, that they’d take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off too. Along the way we find out more and their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today.Today I’m talking to editor Sarah Tarca. Chances are if you picked up a magazine in the last 10 years, you’ve probably read her work. And, if like me, as a teen you were a regular reader of Girlfriend magazine, then you’ll recognise her immediately, as the beauty editor and later editor of the iconic Aussie youth magazine. She later became the Beauty Director of Marie Claire before making the incredible decision in her thirties to pack up her life and travel the world with her boyfriend, indefinitely. This wasn’t traditional backpacking holiday though - the pair became digital nomads, working and travelling around the globe. That was about two and a half years. As I sit down with Sarah today a few things have changed - boyfriend now fiance and the proud parents of gorgeous three month old Yuki.We talked about the lengths she went to chase her dream job, what she learnt packing it all in to go from beauty editor to backpacker, the power of teen mags and how it’s changed and why a red lip is more than just a statement - it can be a lifeline. One more thing. Reaching out and meeting Sarah was a special moment for me. You see, as a 13 year old from the UK, just moved to Australia - same language but totally foreign in almost every other respect, I was one of those teens for which mags like Girlfriend were a saviour. It was a window into what Aussie teens were watching, wearing, talking about. It gave me common ground and it helped me belong, and I don’t know how many issues I religiously read Sarah’s beauty columns in. I hope you enjoy.Follow Sarah:Instagram: @tarca @thewayward.coVisit her new lifestyle and wellness site: The WaywardRead her article about going from beauty editor to backpacker.Follow host Brittany Stewart:Visit beautyislandpodcast.com for more episodes and BTS action.Instagram: @brittanybeautybts @beautyislandpodcastEmail: beautyislandpodcast@gmail.comSubscribe to It's A Beauty! Kate Morris was just 21 when she had her million dollar idea - Australia’s first online beauty e-commerce site, Adore Beauty. On this episode, discover how she did it and her own journey through beauty.Hello and welcome to Beauty Island, the beauty podcast that celebrates life and lipstick.I’m your host, beauty journalist, Brittany Stewart, and each episode I sit down with a guest to ask them about the 8 beauty products that have a special memory or meaning for them, that they’d take to a desert island, or Beauty Island, that I am sending them off too. This doesn’t necessarily mean practical products but rather the beauty products they’ve come across throughout their lives that carry significant stories, power or nostalgia for them. The ones that make up a little bit of who they are. Along the way we find out more and their life, career and the people and events that have shaped them into who they are today.Today my guest is Kate Morris, founder of online beauty retailer, Adore Beauty. At a time when we’re obsessed with lady bosses - a controversial term we do talk about in this episode - on paper Kate seems like the ultimate one in a million entrepreneur. And in a way she is - at just 21 years old, not yet graduated from uni, while she was working on the Clarins beauty counter in a department store she realised that there were better and more enjoyable ways customers were looking for to buy their beauty products. Online. Except it was 1999 and it just wasn’t a thing that was done in Australia. Kate went for it and nearly 20 years later Adore Beauty stocks established and emerging beauty brands like Dermalogica, Bobbi Brown, The Ordinary, Salt by Hendrix and Iconic London. But there’s so much more to her story. Like how she almost threw in the towel in the first year, the hard work you often don’t see shown on social media, the industry recognition that took a decade and Estee Lauder who said no to being stocked on the site for 14 years.I sat down with Kate in Adore Beauty’s Melbourne offices - and the first thing I noticed was how at 6pm on a Monday we were the only two there. You’ll find out the excellent reason why when we chat about work life balance. We also talked about how the beauty industry reacted towards a 21 year old from Tasmania trying to revolutionise the industry (spoiler: not well initially), the $19 multi-purpose balm she takes absolutely everywhere with her, and why it’s not ideas that are the most important thing but rather actually executing them. She is generous, brilliant and full of incredibly inspiring advice. If you haven't listened to part 1, I recommend scrolling down and doing so, then jumping back to this one.Name an Aussie publication and Kelly Baker has probably written for them. The journalist and editor has worked for the likes of New Idea, Body and Soul, Shop Til You Drop, the Australian Women's Weekly and Channel Nine, as well as her own beauty website The Beauty Insider.Kelly tells it like it is. She's seen a lot in her time in the industry. Along with her eight chosen products, we spoke about the hey days of magazines and what the industry is like now, why fashion is bitchier than beauty, the politics of the term 'anti-ageing', the taboo around botox and fillers and the reality of being a single parent and writing about it on the internet. She's had a fascinating career and has so many great insights.
