In this episode, Bahar Etminan and Danielle Renee from Bobbie Charles Clinics, explore the complexities of melasma and hyperpigmentation, discussing their differences, triggers, and effective treatments. They share personal insights into various solutions, particularly the Cosmelan treatment, which is highlighted as a leading option for pigmentation issues. The conversation covers the importance of understanding skin types and potential risks associated with treatments such as prescription hydroquinone. It also delves into the role of ingredients in skin health, the cost and accessibility of treatments, and the importance of understanding contraindications. Danielle and Bahar discuss combining treatments for optimal results, the evolving role of epigenetics in skin wellness, and the impact of sun exposure. Key Takeaways Melasma is often misunderstood and challenging to treat. Hyperpigmentation refers to increased melanin in specific areas, with forms such as sun-induced and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Melasma penetrates deeper into the skin, making it harder to treat, and can be triggered by hormonal changes and genetics. Cosmelan is an effective treatment for pigmentation, containing ingredients like Arbutin and Kojic acid. The skin retains memory of past treatments, influencing its future responses. Proper aftercare is essential for maintaining treatment results. Understanding individual skin types is crucial for effective treatment. The cost of Cosmolan treatments has risen over the years. Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should avoid Cosmelan treatments. Combining Cosmolan with LED therapy enhances results. The skincare industry is moving towards less invasive treatments. Education on sun exposure is vital for skin health. Thorough consultations are essential for personalised skincare. Perimenopause significantly affects skin health and appearance. Cosmelan is effective for pigmentation but not primarily for scarring. Innovative treatments for intimate areas are emerging in skincare. Tongues and Cheeks and Dermal Punches, oh my. Ryan made a new video about tongue piercings and it sparked off a whole thing. Lola joins in for a conversation about common practices that have become less common, why, and what we're going to do about it. We approach tongues as a staple piercing that is making a comeback post-facemask-life. We approach cheek piercings as something we really wanted to like, but just don't. And Dermal Punches are talked about in more of a nostalgic hypothetical. A big recurring theme is informed consent. Openly and honestly talking about the risks and consequences for all of these piercings and how they should be approached as both the piercer and the piercee. In part 3 of my dermal filler series I discuss facial balancing using dermal fillers, and particularly take a look behind the curtain of your injector's brain and understand why we may suggest treating a different part of your face when you're complaint is technically another area. You'll learn what your injector is looking for and assessing in the different parts of your face, and why treating multiple areas results in a superior aesthetic outcome. Facial fat atrophy, also known as facial lipoatrophy, is a condition where the fat in the face diminishes, resulting in a sunken or hollow appearance. This can occur due to a variety of causes, including genetics, aging, and certain medical conditions or treatments. One of the most common causes of facial fat atrophy is aging. As we get older, our bodies naturally lose fat, including in the face. This can result in a gaunt or hollow appearance, making us look older than we feel. Additionally, certain medical conditions, such as HIV/AIDS and diabetes, can also lead to facial fat atrophy. Another major cause of facial fat atrophy is certain treatments, such as radiation therapy and certain medications. Radiation therapy, which is used to treat cancer, can damage the fat cells in the face, resulting in a sunken appearance. Certain medications, such as corticosteroids, can also lead to facial fat atrophy by causing the body to break down fat. Treatment options for facial fat atrophy include dermal fillers, fat grafting, and facial surgery. Dermal fillers, such as hyaluronic acid, can be injected into the face to add volume and improve the appearance of sunken or hollow areas. Fat grafting, which involves taking fat from one area of the body and transplanting it to the face, can also be used to restore volume. Facial surgery, such as a facelift, can also be used to improve the appearance of sunken or hollow areas in the face. It is important to consult with a medical professional to determine the best course of treatment for facial fat atrophy. With the right approach, it is possible to restore a more youthful and full appearance to the face.
Today's episode is a quick one to give you an overview of the 2 US FDA approved biostimulators, Sculptra (PLLA) and Radiesse (CaHa), and also an honorable mention to PRP and PRF. Dermal fillers are one of the most popular and asked for cosmetic treatments in the U.S., and for good reason. These products can do a lot to help restore volume loss, correct signs of aging, and help define structures of the face. It's like adding a little air to a balloon to fill it back up! But if dermal fillers have you concerned about an overblown or unnatural look, rest assured that when done with small volumes and placed correctly, the results are nothing but natural and beautiful! There are several types of dermal fillers on the market today including the most common hyauronic acid fillers, as well as fat grafting, poly-L-lactic-acid, and calcium hydroxylapatite to name some common ones. Listen in as I discuss all things dermal fillers and how and where we use them.
It's finally time to dive headfirst into dermal filler! This topic is so extensive that I'm breaking it up into multiple episodes. Today's episode will focus on: 1. Brief History of Filler & How It's Made 2. Informed Consent including side effects & adverse reactions 3. Why we use filler 4. Pre and Post care instructions 5. Patient Safety Checklist This podcast is to help educate you about procedures and products but is not meant to give medical advice.
