Anita Rani speaks to Labour MP Jake Richards and Conservative MP Richard Holden about the possibility of cross party action on this issue. A video has been going viral since yesterday: New Zealand MP Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke brought the country's parliament to a halt by performing a haka in protest at a controversial bill seeking to reinterpret the country's founding treaty with Māori people. Maori journalist Jamie Tahana tells Anita what happened, and what it means for the country. Actor Halle Berry attended a fashion show wearing the same dress she memorably wore while accepting the Oscar for best actress in 2002. Anita explores this with Rosana Lai fashion editor at Glamour UK.COP29 - the UN's climate conference – has been taking place in Baku, Azerbaijan this week. LEIGH RICHARDSON JOINS DAWN LIVE! LEIGH EXPANDS ON THE LATEST REPORTS AND THE IMPACTS ON YOUR BRAIN AND MENTAL HEALTH Her take on the SEPTA Shootings and dealing with Trauma... SPRING AHEAD - HOW CAN YOU PREPARE YOUR BODY AND INNER CLOCKS ADJUST TO THE TIME CHANGE? 47% OF US RESIDENTS REPORT "HIGH SATISFACTION" WITH THE STATE OF THEIR LIVES - ONLY ONE POINT HIGHER THAN THE RECORD LOW - HOW CAN WE PIVOT? POPCORN BRAIN REPORTS - THE NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON YOUR ATTENTION SPAN ON A DAILY BASIS AS A WHOLE... SECRET TO CURING YOUR DEPRESSION IS "RIGHT UNDER YOUR NOSE"? WHAT SCENTS HELP TREAT DEPRESSION? (Axios)On Sunday, we "spring ahead" to daylight saving time, even though many sleep experts wish we wouldn't.Why it matters: Members of health groups favor standard time over daylight saving time because they say it's more aligned with our body clocks... What they're saying: "Research shows that the abrupt seasonal shift in time disrupts circadian rhythms, leading to sleep disturbances, increased fatigue and even a heightened risk of heart attacks and strokes," says James Rowley, president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. He adds that right after the clocks shift in March, there's "a spike in workplace accidents, road accidents and medical errors due to sleep deprivation and cognitive impairment."Zoom in: Daylight saving time begins at 2 a.m. Sunday, when clocks are set forward one hour. How can we help our inner body clocks adjust to the time change? Brain Health Coach and Consultant Leigh Richardson, PhD, can weigh in on this. Her initial focus was on organizational behavior. She shifted to human behavior in 2003 after her son suffered a traumatic brain injury. Leigh has also been in ICU twice with brain injury. All of this fueled her need to understand how the brain works or why it doesn't work. (Gallup)For just the third time in more than two decades, less than half of Americans say they are “very satisfied” with the way things are going in their personal lives. The 47% of U.S. adults expressing high satisfaction with their lives has edged down three percentage points over the past year and is only one point higher than the 2011 record low for the trend... However, some groups of U.S. adults are still registering majority-level high satisfaction with their lives, including higher-income, married, more religious, college educated, older Americans and Democrats...(This data comes from) Gallup's Jan. 2-22, 2024, Mood of the Nation poll. Read more. What is driving this trend - and what can we do to improve our outlook? Is it as simple as counting our blessings? For perspective, turn to someone who devotes her life to studying the brain and its impact on our behavior. Brain Health Coach and Consultant Leigh Richardson, PhD, says her initial focus was on organizational behavior. She shifted to human behavior in 2003 after her son suffered a traumatic brain injury. Leigh has also been in ICU twice with brain injury. All of this fueled her need to understand how the brain works or why it doesn't work. You are welcome to contact Leigh directly: Brain Health Coach and Consultant Leigh Richardson, PhDLicensed Professional Counselor;Founder, The Brain Performance Center (New York Post)This may seem corny — but if you are feeling overwhelmed by the non-stop pace of digital media and find yourself struggling to concentrate on a single task or thought, you may have “popcorn brain.”“Popcorn brain refers to the tendency for our attention and focus to jump quickly from one thing to another, like popping corn kernels,” clinical psychologist Dr. Daniel Glazer told Metro UK last week... Psychologist Dannielle Haig told Glamour UK last week that excessively scrolling and browsing through new posts, alerts, engagements, and advertisements triggers a small dopamine release that rewards the brain and fuels the cycle. “Over time, this constant demand for attention and the rapid switching between tasks can lead to a feeling of mental restlessness or the brain ‘bouncing around' as it struggles to maintain focus on any one task for an extended period,” Haig explained. Research by the University of California at Irvine determined that the average attention span on any screen before switching to something else decreased from 2.5 minutes in 2004 to 75 seconds in 2012 to 47 seconds nowadays... The constant digital stimulation appears to be affecting brain performance. Research suggests that neural pathways in the brain “are being rerouted or adapted to accommodate the demands of multitasking and rapid information processing,” Haig says, which may come at the expense of being able to “engage deeply and thoughtfully with content, potentially impacting learning, memory, and emotional regulation over time.” She warns that “popcorn brain” can negatively affect social interactions, patience, emotional well-being, and productivity while increasing anxiety and the potential for burnout. Read more. For advice on how you can ease the impact of "popcorn brain," turn to someone whose mission in life is "Enhancing your brain daily." (New York Post)The secret to curing depression is right under your nose, according to a new study.Researchers from the University of Pittsburgh learned that smells are more effective than words in evoking positive memories, which could help people with depression get out of negative thought patterns. Read more. NBC News: The study included 32 adults with clinical depression. Participants were asked to sniff 24 odor samples from glass jars, which could be pleasant, neutral or unpleasant. The scents included orange, lavender, vanilla extract, cumin, whiskey, red wine, ketchup, cough syrup, disinfectant and shoe polish. Participants were then asked to share a specific memory from their life in response to those cues. The researchers conducted the same exercise using 24 words that described each smell. Around 68% of the participants could recall specific memories in response to the odors, whereas only 52% could recall specific memories after hearing words out loud. Memories triggered by smells were also more vivid than memories triggered by words. How could this impact treating people who suffer from depression? Brain Health Coach and Consultant Leigh Richardson, PhD, expands on all of this. Her initial focus was on organizational behavior. She shifted to human behavior in 2003 after her son suffered a traumatic brain injury. Leigh has also been in ICU twice with brain injury. All of this fueled her need to understand how the brain works or why it doesn't work. Tune in weekdays 10 AM - 12 PM EST on Talk Radio 1210 WPHT; or on the Audacy app!

Dating is difficult. Most everyone agrees but most people don't understand that it can be even more difficult when you live with depression (or other mental health issues). But, just because something is difficult doesn't mean we don't want to do it. When you have depression symptoms, it can feel impossible to find the energy to go on a date, which can lead to feeling even more alone. Join us as today's guest, therapist Kati Morton, gives some tips on dating with mental illness and mentions that you might not even be ready to date yet. “You mentioned how isolated you felt when you were like, I'm going to be single. I cannot encourage people enough to invest in their friendships. I know with a mental illness, that can even be tricky. But connect with those people because, really, statistically speaking, our friendships last way longer than most of our romantic relationships. So, we need to have that also so we're not putting all of our social connection and fulfillment on one person.” ~Kati Morton, LMFT To learn more -- or read the transcript -- visit the official episode page. Today we're starting off by talking about Jessa Duggar Seewald and the blatant lies that the Left is pushing about her and the miscarriage she tragically suffered over the holidays. Leftist outlets are trying to convince people that Jessa actually had an abortion "whether she wants to admit it or not," because she had a D&C following the miscarriage. The problem, aside from the cruelty, is that that's not how a D&C works. We set the record straight and highlight the lies that the media are putting out. Then, we discuss Paris Hilton's cover in Glamour UK, where she revealed that she not only had an abortion at age 20, but also has frozen 20 embryos with her husband that she seems to have no interest in pursuing. The reason? They're all boys and she wants a girl. We discuss the selfishness and hypocrisy of this perspective. Then, we discuss Woody Harrelson's SNL monologue from last weekend, in which he claims Big Pharma bought out the media to push the jab. The media, naturally, began to call him a conspiracy theorist. We look at some examples of similar COVID “conspiracy theories” and what ended up happening with each. --- Timecodes: (00:43) Intro (02:17) Jessa Duggar Seewald (30:52) Paris Hilton: abortion & surrogacy (46:35) Woody Harrelson on SNL (53:42) Previous "conspiracies" --- Today's Sponsors: Cozy Earth — go to CozyEarth.com/ALLIE and use promo code 'ALLIE' at checkout to save 35% off your order! Kat Harris is the host of The Refined Collective Podcast, author of Sexless in the City, and Founder of the online publication The Refined Woman. She has also been a full-time photographer for over a decade with her work featured in: The New York Times, WWD, Vanity Fair, GQ, Forbes, People, Who What Wear, US Weekly, Glamour UK and more. In everything she does, her goal is to create a safe space to have honest and layered conversations around faith, sexuality, relationships, culture, identity, and everything in-between. Kat doesn't pretend to be an expert, or to have all the answers. Far from it. And though it may feel more convenient to have easy black-and-white answers, she invites you to discover God in the grey and unexpected spaces. Her hope is to look doubt in the face, be curious, seek God, and ask meaningful questions to address any ‘elephant in the room' with openness, nuance and grace. To learn more about Kat and her work, you can visit www.therefinedwoman.com and research her book at sexlessinthecitybook.com Have an idea for a future episode, or a story you want to share? Hindsight 2020: Tribulations and silver linings during a global pandemic Hindsight 2020: Tribulations and silver linings during a global pandemic is a collection of non-fiction short stories that feature unfiltered first-person accounts of the incredible, heartbreaking, and, more often than not, catastrophic effects 2020 had on people's lives. Hindsight 2020 offers an overview of the big events of 2020 through the moving personal stories of 10 people from around the globe.2020 was a life-changing, historic year, largely because of the pandemic, but coronavirus is not the main focus of the book. More on Fani: I live and breathe beauty, value personal connections, and above all - authenticity is at the core of my brand. Growing up, I had acne (I've had it for over a decade) and remembered seeing all the perfectly polished images on Instagram and in magazines. It was devastating and made me hate myself and my skin. In the last few years, I vowed to be as honest as possible, showing my skin with all its so-called "imperfections," and if I manage to help even one person, that will be enough! In my writing, it's essential to provide value to the reader, so all my pieces are always well-research and include expert opinions. I love reading scientific journals and learning about new ingredients, beauty treatments, and more. I'm very creative, organized, and a bit chaotic! BREAKEVEN is a London-based blog written and edited by Fani Mari, a beauty, lifestyle, and fashion journalist. With a master's degree in Fashion Journalism from Central Saint Martins and various contributions to publications such as Coveteur, HuffPost US, Cosmopolitan UK + US, The Independent, Glamour UK, Byrdie, MINE Magazine, Citizen Femme, Global Blue, 1Granary, Design Scene, D'Scene Magazine, Drapers and others. This blog is a personal diary, a compilation of product reviews, traveling, outfit shots, inspiration, general thoughts, and everything in between. This blog is mainly about beauty and skincare as well as fashion. Fani has seen the catastrophic effects of fast fashion over the years of working in the industry and has always favored up-and-coming designers and high-quality materials that last the test of time; hence she's involved in a peer-to-peer rental platform By Rotation, to add to the circular economy movement and focusing on sharing rather than owning. Even as this year's slate of Marvel Studios properties features Ms. Marvel, a Disney+ series dedicated to the first Muslim superhero, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the follow-up to the widely successful 2018 film Black Panther, Jessica Alba believes the franchise still hasn't done enough to address the issue of diversity. “Even if you look at the Marvel movies – that's the biggest driver of fantasy and what's happening right now in entertainment, because it's sort of the family thing – it's still quite Caucasian,” Alba told Glamour UK. “I would say I was one of the few back in the day… And it was before Marvel was sold to Disney, but it's still quite more of the same.” --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tsbrenterprises/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tsbrenterprises/support

“In this day and age, I'm shocked that someone still doesn't know the difference between ‘you're' and ‘your.'” Kate McCue Cruise ship captain Artwork: Ink drawing on a NOAA nautical chart of the waters around the eastern tip of Puerto Rico, an area that cruise ships often travel around. The story: For Kate McCue, captain of Celebrity Edge, a 1,004-foot-long mega cruise ship that can accommodate nearly 3,000 passengers, the day's work never stops. On a typical day onboard the ship, she'll get up at 4 a.m. to begin her work. Aside from being responsible for up to 3,000 passengers and a crew of more than 1,000, she's also active on social media. McCue shares a behind-the-scenes view of what cruise life is like from the ship's bridge on her popular social media channels. On one particular day in October 2020 began like the others, but this day was a little different. An internet troll commented on one of her social media posts, asking, “how can you be a captain? Your only a woman.” [sic] Sexist comments like this and worse towards McCue and other women online are unfortunately all too common. But on this day, McCue was having none of it. She shut the man down with a withering response in a video that quickly went viral around the world: “I think it's about high time that I address this, because it's 2020, and in this day and age I'm shocked that someone still doesn't know the difference between ‘you're' and ‘your.' Just a quick reference: ‘you're,' as in ‘you are,' as in ‘you are sexist.' ‘Your' is something possessive, it belongs to you. Like ‘your ignorance.'” The video concluded with McCue sitting down in her chair, saying “If you need any more clarification, you can find me here—in my captain's chair.” Background on Captain McCue Born January 6, 1978 in San Francisco, CA, McCue began her maritime career with a dream at the age of 12 when she went on a cruise with her family. She told her father she wanted to be a cruise director when she grew up and he told her she could do anything, including captain the ship. She earned a bachelor's degree at Cal Maritime and worked her way up the ranks in the shipping world. She began as an apprentice officer on cargo boats transporting banana from South America and California. Eager to switch from cargo to cruises, she joined Disney Cruise Lines as a third mate and later moved to Royal Caribbean International. She worked her way up to staff captain (second in command), when in 2015, the CEO of Celebrity Cruise Line invited her to apply to captain the Celebrity Summit. This promotion made McCue the first American female captain of a mega cruise ship and only the fifth woman overall. A mega cruise ship has a gross tonnage of least 80,000. Her current ship, Celebrity Edge, is nearly 131,000. Now when passengers begin a voyage on a ship helmed by McCue, she greets them over the loudspeakers, “This is Captain Kate, but you can call me Captain because it took me 19 years to earn this title.” Music: This episode contains music by Geovane Bruno and Zakhar Valaha. Welcome to the 'Are We Nearly WHERE Yet' mini series! It's SO great to be back and bringing you even more brilliant guests filled to the brim with stories, anecdotes, colossal failures and mishaps in order to get you through your twenties decade. This week it is my PLEASURE to be introducing you to journalist, presenter, podcaster and all round ICON... JOSH SMITH!! I know what you're all thinking… how does one go about interviewing the ultimate interviewer?! It's pretty apparent that the best interview with Josh would probably be one he would host himself, sadly we don't have that luxury today, so it's going to be me who'll be taking the ‘reigns' on this one... Growing up in Cambridgeshire, Josh never really felt like he fitted in. He suffered with social anxiety, OCD and felt that he lacked a sense of identity in his tiny sub-urban village. It was actually when Josh moved to London in his early twenties that he really started to discover who he was. Able to finally explore his sexuality, he was inundated with the freedom and opportunity this city gave him; soaking up the parties, people and places. With an initial dream of conquering the fashion journalist world, Josh encountered exciting opportunities and multiple rejections before landing a job at Glamour UK where he is now contributing editor.Throughout the decade, Josh has gone on to interview some of the biggest stars in the world, from Kylie Jenner and Reece Whitherspoon to Victoria Beckham and Oprah Winfrey. A hugely successful journalist and interviewer, he creates a safe space for his guests to open up while balancing hilarious anecdotes with deeper philosophical and personal conversations surrounding mental health, empowerment and stepping into your true authentic self. In a society so consumed with speaking out and turning up the volume, Josh reminds us all of the importance of listening and how it really can be our greatest superpower.Josh is also an ambassador for children's mental health charity Place2Be and host of the Reign with Josh Smith Podcast, which is just as uplifting, unfiltered and utterly addictive as he is. Our favourite Millennial Minesweeper Quote this week was: ‘To be without some of the things you want is an indispensable part of happiness' - Bertrand Russell
See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
If you're caught between purity culture & running free like a wild, liberated woman, trying to navigate dating and sexual integrity…this episode is for YOU. In this episode Kat Harris & I talk about sex, lack of sex, sexual ethics, & personal boundaries! Enlightened friends, it's been a while since I have had a progressive Christian voice on the podcast. If you didn't already know, I am a spiritual, but not religious girl, who has deconstructed (and is still deconstructing) from Christianity. I promise today's guest is incredible, open-minded, full of love, and wisdom. Kat Harris is the host of The Refined Collective Podcast, and Co-Founder of the online publication The Refined Woman. The New York Times, Vanity Fair, GQ, Forbes, People, Who What Wear, US Weekly, Glamour UK, and more. She coaches and equips women all over the world in dating, relationships, singleness, sexuality, faith and how to build a renewed and healthy biblical sexual ethic rooted in freedom, truth and grace as opposed to the oh-so-common shame and fear narratives so many experienced growing up in evangelical culture. Ultimately, her vision is for women to know their beauty, identity, worth and value and to experience untapped freedom and joy in their lives regardless of their relationship status. This episode covers topics like: -What is sexuality and who does it belong to -How to deconstruct negative ideologies surrounding your sexuality -What is sex and how do I know if I'm ACTUALLY abstaining from it -How to identify physical boundaries in dating without falling into legalism, fear, or shame -How modern research and science proves there's no such thing as casual sex -The "Disgust Response" and why you need to know about it! -How to develop a holistic & healthy sexual ethic -Positioning yourself for a long term relationship or whatever you really want rather than settling for crumbs -The instant 'spark', the 'one', and the truth about lasting intimacy -How to know if he's emotionally unavailable or only looking for a casual fling Stay in touch with Kat Harris: Follow on IG: https://www.instagram.com/therefinedwoman Get her book: sexlessinthecitybook.com Subscribe to her podcast: THE REFINED WOMAN Kat's website: www.therefinedwoman.com Join the Refined Collective on IG: https://www.instagram.com/therefinedcollective/ If you feel comfortable to share how the show is touching your heart, please leave a rating and review on iTunes or the Apple Podcast App. It will only take a minute, but genuine reviews are vital to the success of my show, so please review by tapping here. In episode 52 UNP founder and curator Grant Scott is in his shed considering the citizen journalist, news organisations expecting images for free and the rise of the magazine promoted photo competition. Plus this week art director/photographer Geoff Waring takes on the challenge of supplying Grant with an audio file no longer than 5 minutes in length in which he answer's the question ‘What Does Photography Mean to You?' After studying Graphic Design at Manchester University in the 1980's Geoff Waring moved back to London and began a career as a magazine designer and art director. He held the position of art director at Elle UK in the late 80's, and Design Director at Vogue UK in the 1990's. After four years at Vogue Condé Nast asked him to art direct Vogue Australia. Sixteen issues later he returned to London to launch Red magazine (The logo is in his handwriting). In 1999 he left Red to work on a major new women's website that never went live, and he returned to print media and Condé Nast to launch Glamour UK magazine in 2001. In 2005 he launched Easy Living magazine where he stayed as Creative Director for four years before moving to Hearst UK to revamp Good Housekeeping magazine among other projects. In 2015 he chose to work solely as a freelance art director for brands including, Boden, M&S, Gina, Monsoon, Cath Kidston and Clarks shoes. Twice a year he designs and art direct the arts and culture magazine Perfect Bound with other industry professionals who like Geoff found they were not being given the creative freedom in commercial magazines anymore and decided to create their own publication. As a commissioned photographer he works for brands including House of Fraser, Karen Miller, Gina, and various Hearst published magazines. Not content with working as a photographer and art director Geoff has also written and illustrated several award winning children's books published in the UK and across the world, including the USA, France, Sweden, Taiwan and Korea. He has also created his own typeface titled Mental Block. www.geoffwaring.com You can also access and subscribe to these podcasts at SoundCloud https://soundcloud.com/unofphoto on iTunes https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/a-photographic-life/id1380344701 on Player FM https://player.fm/series/a-photographic-life and Podbean www.podbean.com/podcast-detail/i6uqx-6d9ad/A-Photographic-Life-Podcast Grant Scott is the founder/curator of United Nations of Photography, a Senior Lecturer in Professional Photography at the University of Gloucestershire, a working photographer, and the author of Professional Photography: The New Global Landscape Explained (Focal Press 2014) and The Essential Student Guide to Professional Photography (Focal Press 2015).
