In our chat today, Emma and I talk about her journey into voiceover, from discovering the industry to joining an agency and building her business. She also discusses her experience of being homeless and living in different countries, which has influenced her acting. Emma emphasizes the importance of marketing services directly to clients and the limitations of pay to play platforms. She highlights the power of social media in growing her business and building relationships. Emma's story showcases the significance of authenticity, perseverance, and building connections in the voiceover industry. This is our interview with Emma O'Neill. Takeaways: Discovering voiceover can happen unexpectedly through the encouragement of others. Building relationships and connections is crucial for success in the voiceover industry. Marketing services directly to clients can be more effective than relying solely on agencies. Authenticity and being yourself on social media can help grow your voiceover business. I interviewed Danny Duncan who is one of YouTube's wildest creators — but he's also one of the smartest. Years before MrBeast launched Beast Burger or Feastables and Logan Paul and KSI sold out stores with Prime, Duncan was crashing Zumiez's website and selling out Tilly's and Spencers with his popular merch line Virginity Rocks. Danny Duncan shared untold stories about his early years (like living with Chris Chann in LA, working with Jason Lee of My Name is Earl), all the businesses he's started (From 16 Handles to Good Sport), how he's been able to sell $150 million of merch, and why he's not exactly just the "bad boy" people think he is. We were also joined by his manager Stefan Toler who had a lot of amazing stories to share. Today’s episode is one of the most unique, touching, and motivational interviews with one amazing man. Jimmy Mackey is a coach, trainer, entrepreneur, and philanthropist based in the Bahamas and he’s overcome a ton of adversity in his life. Jimmy just expanded his MacFit360 brand and opened up his new state-of-the-art, world-class, 17,000 square foot training facility smack in the middle of the Nassau, Bahamas. On today’s show, Jimmy discusses: - How growing up poor and even homeless at times created an unparalleled grit and work ethic in him. - How losing his father and brother at young ages deepened his faith, eventually helping him get through the tough times. - How to be led by your vision and ultimately manifest what you desire. - How he combines his love for training, photography, sport, and entrepreneurism on his social media to expand his brand. He also offers a few social media tips for someone starting out or looking to level-up their brand. - Why he started his Jimmy Mackey IMPACT Foundation and what it’s all about. Folks, I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation and I know you will feel Jimmy’s spirit permeate throughout the episode. His energy, resilience, grit, personality, and vision are reasons why I set the intention to have a retreat in the Bahamas in 2022. Who’s in? We may say we are all part of a large gaming community, but some groups of players may be living in a walled off city, isolated from the popular discussion of games. World of Warcraft may have millions of players, but is the WoW community excluded now more than ever? Katie Williams thinks so in her article that inspired this week's podcast discussion. Who built these walls? What are we losing by isolating ourselves? And most importantly, how do we tear these walls down? Join Scott and I this week while we try to answer these questions and many more. As always, we encourage you to read Katie's original piece which you can find in the show notes below. We also encourage you to share your thoughts in the comments section.Discuss starters:- How relevant is WoW today?- Are MMOs unique enough such that they inherently exist in a walled off city?- What role do developers, and community managers in particular, play in fomenting conversation between games. Homelessness is a very serious condition in this country (even though it is WAY TOO SERIOUS given our "status" in the world!) Sometimes people end up homeless that never would have thought they would be in such a situation. I know most people have some family or friends that they can lean on a lil bit if times get hard. To think that I would have to go to a shelter right now, given the amount of friends and family I have sounds unthinkable to me. But everyone is not in my shoes. The worse thing about homeless people is they often get judged way too quick. There isn't a floating sign that follows them around with their life story so you can read it and know what led them on this path. Yes I know often times drugs are at play in the situation. But the thing is DRUGS get blamed FALSELY way too often when other things are at play like mental illness, and sometimes plain bad luck. I had an FB friend recently post that her young child saw her first homeless person and she had to explain the situation to her. On that same post, someone said "homeless people are people who f***ed their life up" and basically are to blame for their situation and should get no sympathy. Problem is, they don't know THAT homeless persons story. Most times we never do. Questions 1) What do you think when you see a homeless person on the street, how do you view them? 2) Have you ever been Homeless or close to it or know anyone and how did it happen? 3) Do you think this countries homeless problem is a shame on the country, or just on the individuals themselves? 4) Do you give change to homeless panhandlers, why or why not? 5) What would you do to avoid being homeless?
With Father's Day coming up this weekend, we decided to dedicate a podcast to exploring the role father characters in video games. Starting with an eclectic list of various game dads, we examine them in terms of their gameplay functions, back-stories, and their narrative importance. A number of surprising patterns crop up that link even the most dissimilar-seeming game fathers. We finish by theorizing about how father characters will continue to develop in forthcoming games. As always, feel free to share your thoughts about anything we mention in the podcast, as well as your analysis of any game dads we passed over. Some discussion starters:- Who are your favorite game dads? - How is fatherhood portrayed in games? What makes dads important to the gaming experience in terms of story and gameplay?- Has your perception of fatherhood in games changed over the years? Will the portrayal of fathers in games change as more gamers have children? To listen to the podcast: - Subscribe to the EXP Podcast via iTunes here.
