We're thrilled to welcome Abrams editor Erica Finkel to the podcast to discuss editorial board meetings, the top reasons writers get rejected--and how "fit" means far more than you'd think. Book a meeting with Erica here: https://manuscriptacademy.com/faculty-members/erica-finkel Erica Finkel (she/her) is an Executive Editor for Amulet Books and Abrams Books for Young Readers. Before starting at Abrams in 2010, she was, among other things, an English teacher in France, a theater-camp counselor, and an ice-cream scooper. Erica focuses primarily on chapter books and middle-grade novels and is honored to work with many bestselling and award-winning authors and illustrators, including Andrea Beaty, David Roberts, Mac Barnett, Tom Angleberger, and Ellen Potter. Some books she's edited that are particularly dear to her include Sidetracked by Diana Harmon Asher, Game Changer by Tommy Greenwald, The Chance to Fly by Ali Stroker and Stacy Davidowitz, Once Upon an Eid edited by S. K. Ali and Aisha Saeed, Fraidyzoo by Thyra Heder, and a picture-book biography of Ruth Bader Ginsburg (her hero) by Jonah Winter. When she gets the chance to read a non-Abrams book, she particularly enjoys the work of Gary D. Schmidt, Maggie Stiefvater, Kristin Cashore, and Rainbow Rowell. Her favorite genres are contemporary realistic, fantasy, and magical realism, and she is not the best fit for thrillers or nonfiction. Now they are joined by Aaron Slater, Illustrator. In this episode, Andrea and David talk about how they spark off each other's ideas and tell us more about the background to Aaron Slater.About Aaron Slater, IllustratorAaron Slater loves listening to stories and dreams of one day writing them himself. But when it comes to reading, the letters just look like squiggles to him, and it soon becomes clear he struggles more than his peers. When his teacher asks each child in the class to write a story, Aaron can't get a single word down.He is sure his dream of being a storyteller is out of reach . . .until inspiration strikes, and Aaron finds a way to spin a tale in a way that is uniquely his.
David Roberts is a multi-award-winning and New York Times best-selling illustrator who has earned great acclaim for his distinctive style. While the world comes together to fight a global pandemic, schools have closed, and the public activities that we are used to experiencing with our children are all off-limits. David joined me to share his insightful thoughts about how to interact with our children during this odd time in our lives. He offered this wonderful piece of advice too: allow your children to lead you with their imagination, and pick up on the points they are giving you about the world and about life. David also shared how he uses thoughtful and constructive feedback in his work, his love of fashion, and the art of storytelling through his illustrations. David was born in Liverpool and studied fashion design at university in Manchester. After graduating, he worked as a milliner and a fashion illustrator but always felt his true calling was in children’s books. David finally realized his dream when his first book was published in 1998, and since then he has collaborated with some of Britain’s finest children’s authors, including Julia Donaldson, Sally Gardner, Philip Ardagh, Jacqueline Wilson, and Andrea Beaty. He is also the creator of the popular Dirty Bertie books (Stripes/Little Tiger Press). His previous work includes collaborations with his sister Lynn on retellings of several classic fairy stories. Their book Little Red was shortlisted for the 2005 CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal. In 2006 he won the Nestlé Children’s Book Prize Gold Award for his line drawings in Mouse Noses on Toast (Faber & Faber). Tinder written by Sally Gardner was shortlisted for both the CILIP Kate Greenaway and Carnegie Medals in 2015. He lives in London with his partner. Tune in to hear David’s thoughts pertaining to: A reminder to adults and parents: It’s okay to face the oddness of this situation and to not expect too much of ourselves. (5:08) How to re-introduce characters in a kid's book to our children other ways and allow them to bring their imagination to life. (6:00) How to encourage imagination and creativity: Take, for example, Rosie from the book, Rosie Revere Engineer: Ask your child what you think you’d like to invite Rosie to do. It’s about making a space in your life to craft an environment your child wants to explore. (8:03) Feeling as if you have to be everything to your kids right now, so why not play with creativity. (9:00) David shares one of his earliest memories of his grandmother and toilet paper rolls. (11:21) We discuss the moments that shaped us, for David it was during his childhood, when he was diagnosed with dyslexia and how his school teachers celebrated his drawings. (13:30) Listen to David’s career journey from his youth to art college. (16:20) David shares how he began his career as a milliner in Hong Kong, how he stepped away from that part of his life and pivoted to a career in illustration. He talks openly about the process of illustrating a book and how it can be extremely isolating. (19:49) Do children’s books have hidden messages for the parents? Listen to find out David’s thoughts. (44:00) Sofia Valdez, Future Prez, the clerk’s tiny toe and other ways illustrators keep stories fresh for parents. (53:00) We talk about the mention of Sade (the singer and songwriter) in Sofia’s book and how David created his own plot through imagery and hero-worshipping. (01:00:00) David’s tips for parents during this pandemic. (1:04:00) David offers a tip on how you can find your favorite illustrators on Instagram to participate in drawalongs during this pandemic. (1:06:00) A key question I ask David is: Tell us about how you handle constructive feedback? How do you let it roll off your shoulders (or incorporate it to improve your output)? Creating a space within a space to positively replay black parenthood was the vision of today’s guest. Sara and Misasha get to chat with Shanicia Boswell about her unique perspectives as a black parent, and how there’s something for everyone on her popular blog. Shanicia Boswell is a self-described serial entrepreneur, best known for her Black Moms Blog, where she talks about parenting, culture, and lifestyle from a black mom’s point of view. She also has a company called the Self Care Retreat, where she takes women to international retreat destinations to release, relax, and unwind. Shanicia is also an accomplished photographer. Show Highlights: Shanicia shares the compelling reasons that prompted her to start her Black Moms Blog. Black Mom’s Blog content is about 70% parenting issues, including subjects such as intimacy and self-care that are relevant for any race, and around 30% issues that are more race-specific, with topics such as black hair care, how to be a stronger woman, and maternal death rates for blacks. Caucasian moms are also part of her community. They sometimes show up to meet-ups, and for various reasons: they might have mixed children or may have adopted black children, and have questions when reading the blog articles. Sara, Misasha, and Shanicia discuss relationships and how we connect with different races and sexes. Having conversations can change perspectives, and changing it for one person at a time can have a domino effect and bring about change. There’s a discrepancy between advertiser’s pay rates among white mom bloggers and black mom bloggers. Shanicia imparts some ways she helps to create positive black experiences for her daughter, who is the only black student in her classroom. Experiencing “Hair Day” with a white friend married to a black man with mixed children: get the food, snacks, and movies ready! Hair is such an important part of black culture. Being labeled a single mother in any community typically carries a stigma, and even more so in the black community. Let’s dispel the myth of the single black mom. Shanicia suggests that “single woman” is a more positive narrative. Residential Dad: Instagram’s Chronicles of Daddy has joined Black Moms Blog to speak on fatherhood! Shanicia inspires us with her story behind becoming single and the hard work it took to successfully get back on her feet. Self Care Retreat - you’re allowed to spend some time away from the kids to care for yourself. Without guilt! Ways you can lead in love: great suggestions for a wonderful, yet often under-used attribute that women possess. Andrea Beaty (@andreabeaty) is the author of ROSIE REVERE, ENGINEER and its sequels as well as author of the QUESTIONEERS (@questioneerkids) chapter book series, all illustrated by David Roberts. Andrea shared much insight to how she crafts stories in rhyme and how, when searching for words, the right one is the right one. She also shares the idea of holding onto a dream for somebody else and how books help make room. Andrea’s newest picture book in the series will be SOFIA VALDEZ, FUTURE PREZ, which will release this November. As we take you into the “Live at 25” Podcast Booth at the Sound Garden Pavillion in the exhibit hall at the American Library Association’s annual conference in June, remember: even the smallest things have back stories. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/Treasure-Monkey/support
