Why is grief so painful, and how can we process it? It's important to not grieve alone but to find support and others that can hold space for you while you heal. Grief is way beyond just loss and death. You can grieve a relationship, a job that didn't happen, or just something you were expecting that fell short of your overall vision. More on Bernadette's Emotional Institute community, along with how to work with Sherry and Carla on overcoming codependency, dating, break-ups, healing from toxic relationships, and gaining confidence. How grieving can be passed down from mother to child and through our ancestry. Some tools to be able to sit in grief, and even embrace it instead of running from it. Why is it important to deal with our grief before just jumping into a new relationship? Is there a different type of grief in toxic abusive relationships? How can grief actually be beautiful? Shame is the enemy of our healing work, and we don't want to shame the shame, but let it come up and out. In this episode we engage in conversations with three expert facilitators on their personal stories that led them to experience, understand, and value how white supremacy is stored in our bodies and how healing in community is an essential way for what's next. By healing together, we can shift from inherited fear through being witnessed and being curious. There are ways for us to come to the table together. There are ways for us to strengthen our relationships, re-embrace consistency, joy and trust and let go, releasing ourselves to not knowing.Resources Mentioned on the show:Lisa Jo's websiteBernadette's websiteRoslyn's email: rosaroo1@live.com400 years: Unlearning racism through the body, storytelling and deep listeningOriginally Recorded on January 29, 2021.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/posts/35274155)
In this episode, through storytelling and reflection, we review the somatic experience that people of color have of how the System can unleash itself against them at any time. We highlight how bodies of people of color retain memories of traumatic events and how the retriggering is unlikely for white people to understand. We offer ways to weave the gap across different experiences and pave the way for unlearning racism, healing, and mutual understanding. Our guest, Bernadette is a fiery sensual Speaker, Somatic Healer, Sacred Grief Ritual Facilitator, Creator of The Emotional Institute and Femme!, a mind-body wellness program. Podcast Episode 127: Bernadette Pleasant (Femme!) Bernadette Pleasant is an energetic firebrand who is a speaker, healer, dancer, entrepreneur, and creator of Femme!, a mind-body wellness program. The FBGs had the chance to speak to her about how she began her career and what made her out on the “emotional spanks” in her life. Trust us, this episode gets very emotional as this woman cannot help but speak her truth. Bernadette believes that movement is important to learning and her Femme experiences are body inclusive, a safe space for all ages, backgrounds and body types to find peace, empowerment while moving with the music to tap into your emotions. Think of it as the one space you can reach down and really express your rage, sorrow, worry, joy--whatever you want to send out to the universe. On the importance of creating a culture of emotionally aware and expressed people, and the significance of allowing our bodies to express in a primal and liberated way, as an example of nature and its many states, storms, colors and changes. We speak with somatic healer, dancer, and embodiment facilitator, BERNADETTE PLEASANT, the founder of FEMME!, a modality for all genders. Tune in for this vibrant conversation about how to harness the primal power and vulnerability of our emotions through the body, in a way that makes us freer, more alive, and more connected. EPISODE'S WISDOM BITES: Our bodies are created in the likeness of nature. Sunsets don't hold back. Rainstorms and the ocean get to be so many things; there is no one right way for them to be. And so we also get to be that expressive: We get to be water, we get to be gentle as a fine mist, we get to be still and inviting, we get to be ferocious, we get to be frozen, or warm. We get to be everything that is given to us by example of nature. And the invitation is that nature in no iteration stays the same or operates in a thin or narrow margin. There is change, there is growth, there is color, there is beauty, there is barren, there is every-thing in nature! And our bodies too, our way of being, of moving, of emoting, are all of that– all the ways in which we can live our bodies as an example of nature.” “When my body is freeas it wishes, as opposed to traditional forms of dance, and I am feeling, say, rage,I am not focusing on a pointed toe and an angle, but I get to bring whatever needs to move through me, in such a complete way that I feel wider after I move: I have given that which I am feeling the movement and the sound that it needs to express through my body. So I often tell people to bring me their “too-much”. If they have ever been told that they were too much, I say to them, “Bring it to me! I want your too-muchness.” Those are the kind of people I want to run tribe with, to create a community with. If we get to be fully expressed through our bodies, imagine the lives we get to live.” More about Bernadette's work at https://livefemme.com Bernadette Pleasant is the Creator of Femme! a mind and body wellness modality, rooted in dance, sensuality, emotional and creative expression, inclusivity and empowerment for all. On The PurposeGirl Podcast I teach a range of tools for working with your mindset -- things I've learned in my coaching practice, through positive psychology, and through my own personal work. In the last year or so I've discovered that our emotions get stuck in our body, and through a women's program that I've been a part of I learned how to move my emotions through my body, and it's really helped me manage some of my tougher emotions and bring me greater peace and happiness. It's important to feel our full range of emotions, to own them all, and it's also critical that we understand how to manage them in healthy ways, and my special guest today is the perfect person to help us with this. Bernadette Pleasant is an intoxicating, energetic, fiery sensual Speaker and Somatic Healer, and the Creator of Femme!, a mind-body wellness program. She has spent a lifetime exploring creative visualizations and celebrations of the human form, from sensual dance to somatic healing. A gifted healer, dancer, and entrepreneur, she channels her personal journeys and her radical empathy into transformative, immersive experiences that empower and celebrate people of all genders, ages, sizes, and fitness levels. Bernadette travels globally empowering all through classes, private workshops, retreats and conference engagements. Bernadette and I discuss the importance of moving our emotions through our bodies in healthy ways instead of letting them get stuck there, feeling all our feelings in their full intensity and not stifling them, and then moving past the more challenging emotions. Bernadette Pleasant talks about fully expressing our emotions in order to heal. The post Fully Expressing Our Emotions… With Bernadette Pleasant appeared first on Women Wanting Women.
How much do you enjoy your body? If you’re anything like me… Even the question itself would make me shut down and want to crawl under the covers. What do you mean, how much I enjoy my body? If I lost 10 lbs, I would enjoy it more. For years, my love for my body… Ahem… Not “love” — my tolerating of my body was completely conditional on whether that said body complied with and conformed to the expectations that I had of it. Which were really, really simple. Staying at the same constant “ideal” weight. And not aging. Really, is that too much to ask? It took me some time — and awareness of what I now call Patriarchy Stress Disorder — the trauma of 1000s of years of oppression and how it has shaped our relationships with ourselves, our bodies — among other things… To ask that question. My relationship with my body. My expectations of my body. Were they really… MINE… or were they issued by Patriarchy Press? You can probably guess the answer. Can you relate? Asking that question and confronting the truth of the answer was hugely liberating for me. It liberated me from the constant war against my body. It put me on the path of healing my relationship with her. No longer an IT, but a HER. And she — she has been so grateful. She’s been waiting for my to truly see her and truly love her, unconditionally, just the way she is — for close to 40 years. No matter how many years it’s been for you and her, your body, it’s never too late. Our brilliant guest Bernadette Pleasant shares on this episode of Her Success Radio some deep wisdom of embodiment and healing through authentic movement. She’s glorious and gorgeous. But she wasn’t always this free, this confident, this comfortable in her own skin. It’s hard to believe, looking at her now. So don’t take my word for it. Listen to Bernadette share her story on this episode. And please leave us a comment: What stayed with you from our conversation? The first question I asked Bernadette was, “When you first read the words, Patriarchy Stress Disorder, what did you feel and what did you think?” Bernadette Pleasant: “It just felt so incredibly aligned. I’ve read that and I’ve thought, ‘Whoa, it’s certainly a condition.’ So, how brilliant of you to call it that… I personally saw that and I thought, ‘Oh yeah, I get that. I see that every day.’ I personally have experienced it and I see it in so many people. How they’re shut down and how they are reacting. There are just so many ways of how this disorder affects our lives and how there’s a need to heal. So quite honestly, it just felt so aligned and clear. A sad truth, but naming something — you know how important it is to name something — because then you can do something about it… It’s an awareness of something that exist, and therefore — what can we do about it?” We talked about how Patriarchy Stress Disorder manifests in it feeling unsafe for us to show up in our full authentic expression of our emotions, feel connected with ourselves and others, feel confident and comfortable in our own skin, and live bright, shiny lives — as the bright, shiny beings we came into this world as. We talked about Bernadette’s personal journey and how she created Femme! — her brilliant body of work — out of her own need to liberate. How a repressed emotional range leads to disempowerment and under-living, under-enjoying all areas of live — or, as Bernadette calls it, half-assing your emotions and your life. May our conversation serve as validation of your experience of feeling under-expressed, under-powered in this patriarchal culture and inspiration for re-powering yourself by getting in touch with your body, your emotions — and reclaiming them. Please tune in and give your precious body the gift of your unconditional love for her.
Women's embodiment of their emotional lives and expression have been overrun by our logical, rational minds, but dealing with our emotions with our minds leaves us feeling stuck and disconnected. Emotions are meant to be felt, and we feel things through our body, which is why dance and movement are an excellent way to reconnect with your body, emotions and felt experience- something most of us are deeply lacking in our lives. Bernadette Pleasant has created Femme!; a dance, movement and meditation practice that provides women the experience to reconnect with their full self through embodiment and connection to emotions and honoring our bodies. Femme! is an experience, brand and lifestyle movement that passionately fuses sensual movement, dance, meditation, creative visualization and celebration of the human form. Femme! is inspired by African, Tribal and Free Dance interwoven with the somatic and primal healing arts. Femme! creates sacred, safe spaces and invites everyone to reclaim and boldly display their power. You can find Femme on the web, on Instagram, Youtube or Facebook. Bernadette Pleasant is the creator of Femme, a fusion of sensual movement, dance, meditation, creative visualization and celebration of the feminine form. Femme! as designed, creates sacred, safe spaces for women to explore their femininity; to move in sensual ways, to explore and release emotions, to alter or release beliefs about themselves and to unapologetically love their bodies! Bernadette was such a fun person to talk with. We dove into why people live “half-assed emotional lives” (and how to stop), the power of drumming and how it helps us to reach other levels of our psyche, and the wisdom we can access through our bodies.
In today's episode, the creative genius behind FEMME! (live femme.com), Bernadette Pleasant gifts us with Self-Care tips and strategies for fully embracing your femininity.
