More isn't always better, but that's sometimes a hard lesson to learn in the world of board games - we dig into an intriguing listener suggestion about how games (and gamers) can often fall into this trap. Also ... I guess we've got to plan some games for our funerals? It's a double hit of listener questions! While we're certainly steadfast in some of our opinions (ahem, Biblios) we were curious to reflect on how we've changed - nay, grown - in the years since we started. In episode 81 of Game Design Unboxed: Inspiration to Publication we talk with Whitney Loraine the designer of Skybound's Pirate Tails game. Her inspiration came from the push-you-luck set collection mechanics of Biblios. She took what she liked most from that game and created her own game. Listen to her start as a new designer. How going to a convention allowed her to network and meet publishers nice enough to introduce her to Skybound where she now has two signed games! We made it! We've arrived at last at the final ten(-ish) games, in fact, our TOP TEN (or so?) favourite games of all time. Thanks for joining us again on this yearly pilgrimage, as always it's the journey that's the important thing - but that's not to say that there isn't some exciting moving and shaking to happen at the destination. In this session of Orthodoxy, Pastor Nelson teaches on the uniqueness of The Holy Bible; guiding us to the truth that it is God's word and laws of Bible interpretation; how to properly read and interpret scripture. The Bible can be trusted as the word of God with several internal and external evidences. We also learn in this teaching how to avoid the wrong interpretation of scriptures. When studying the word of God, we should approach every scripture wanting to learn what the author intended it to mean. Be edified as you listen to this teaching

The Settlers of Zarahemla 2. Ierusalem: Anno Domini 3. Ezra and Nehemiah (forthcoming) 4. Nicaea What Makes a Great Religious-Themed Game? It succeeds at what it's trying to do. It explores its theme complexly and appropriately for its weight. It is joyous. It comforts the player and/or exhorts them to a higher good. Your hypothesis: “Games that tend to intend to convince the player of something tend to be worse than games that play in the space.” What are Our Top 3 Religiously Themed Games? The panel pulls out Biblios, a classic light weight card from 2007. Biblios was designed by Steve Finn, and was originally published as Scripts and Scribes, through Dr. Finn's Games. It is currently published as Biblios by IELLO Episode Summary: In this episode, we discussed the two player card game Biblios. The panel discusses how the game is separated into two phases and how to manipulate the marketplace to increase the value of your sets. We also talk about the quality of the game, with great art and large chunky dice. Lastly, we invite listeners to join the conversation on our website and Discord. Chapters: (0:00:50) - Remembering How to Play Biblios (0:10:22) - A Quality Game to Add to Your Collection Chapter Summaries: (0:00:50) - Remembering How to Play Biblios (10 Minutes) The game is separated into two phases, the first being a drafting phase where the active player picks cards, and places them either in their hand, into the middle to be drafted, or discarded to be auctioned in the second phase. The second phase involves using the money cards collected in the first phase to purchase cards from the auction deck to make sets, while also manipulating the marketplace to increase the value of sets. (0:10:22) - A Quality Game to Add to Your Collection (5 Minutes) Biblios is a quality game that is small and simple without being mindless. It is a great example of how a game can be smaller in size and still be of high quality and complexity. The panel discuss how the game is well-presented with large, chunky dice and great art. The panel also rates the game highly, giving it a 7 on the BoardGameGeek 1 to 10 rating system. The episode ends with an invitation to join the conversation on their website and social media. Here is another Bitesize podcast from your blabbering duo in Babblot. Time is catching up with us so we will reveal to you our most played and love games that were published in the year 2006 and 2007. Did we miss again? Maybe next time we come back around to this time we may mention it. But feel free to add in the comments the games that you deem as Evergreen
I love playing board or card games with my wife. Spending a little, or a lot of time together focused on the same activity is a wonderful way to connect. It started as a date night, but now we might play a quick 5-10 minute game or two over lunch or we play a longer game. Co-operative games tend to be our favourite. Working together to solve the puzzle that the game presents is a lot of fun. That's why we also love solving the Sunday crossword puzzle together. There are very few two-player competitive games that we enjoy and in this article, I want to explain why. You were proud of your large library and your hard-working group of scribes was continually adding new tomes, with wonderfully decorative lettering and illustrations. However, you only had so much gold and the best scribes weren't cheap, but you had to somehow continue growing your collection of books to keep the bishop happy and outdo other abbots who were vying for influence. So you persevered and did what you could to have the most Biblios by Steve Finn from iello. 00:00 - Leaving the pub with invincibility. 08:20 - Dire Wolf Digital's Dune: Imperium is a highly thematic worker placement game that successfully captures the political intrigue the franchise is known for. Better yet, it avoids a lot of the pitfalls of similar games, by always offering you something truly beneficial to do, so you never feel like a turn is “wasted”. 15:23 - Magic darts. 17:20 - A reimplementation of Biblios, For the King (and Me) is from Coiledspring Games and Iello and features art that screams personality as the backdrop to a deeply satisfying auction game of continual push and pull. 27:44 - Marvel's latest superhero movie is Eternals and we have not one, not three, but two claims to fame about its cast. The film itself is divisive, but what we can all agree on is that its core question is this: “is humanity actually worth saving?” 50:04 - Want to learn how to create and publish RPG content to the Miskatonic Repository, in just one month? Then you should definitely check out the Write Your First Adventure Call of Cthulhu Path from The Storytelling Collective. With insights from Ashley Warren and Paul Fricker, it's a great experience, and not just because it gives you a deadline... All that, and Bruce Willis with a space drill, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). We have a lovely playlist set themed on the stuff we talk about, over on Spotify, if you're into that sort of thing. Links to where you can find us - StayingInPodcast.com Note: sometimes we'll have been sent a review copy of the thing we're talking about on the podcast. It doesn't skew how we think about that thing, and we don't receive compensation for anything we discuss, but we thought you might like to know this is the case.
In this episode we do some catching up as we haven't seen each other for a while. In this episode of Quick Looks from The Long View, I'm pleased to be joined once again by Elhannan Lloyd Keller as we review two new titles. Finally, we review a new title from Steve Finn and Dr. Finn's Games, Foragers. Is this another winner from the maker of Biblios? Listen to get our impressions of this interesting pick up and deliver game. Jason chats with artist, graphic designer, and game designer Adam McIver of The Cre8tive Dept. about games and stuff.
In this episode of The Long View, Joel Eddy and I discuss the conventions we attended during the month of November, and three games that I feel are wonderful, compressed games. These are games that are more than just a light, quick, filler. They are games that give you a full game experience, compressed into a quick playing time. Not a filler, not a super filler. These are games meaty enough to qualify as a main course! Join Joel and I as we discuss Biblios, Council of Verona and Mamma Mia!. The Long View is a proud member of The Dice Tower Network, home to fantastic podcasts, news, reviews and commentary. Go find a podcast perfect for you! The Long View is sponsored by www.gamesurplus.com Go to gamesurplus for fantastic selection and exceptional customer service!
