Ep. 63 National Law Enforcement Suicide Awareness Day 9/26 – revisiting my interview from Sept. 2021 with Inspector Steve Hough co-creator of Blue H.E.L.P.To mark the four-year anniversary of my podcast I'm taking a look back and reposting a few episodes from the early days with content and issues that remain relevant today. This is about the tragedy of officer suicide, not just the loss of life, but how that loss of life is regarded. We are all keenly aware of the devastating frequency with which we see reports of yet another officer who has taken his or her own life. For many of you, these losses are not news reports – they are personal and painful. As I said when I aired this interview in 2021, I want to draw attention to this issue and the support that does exist to prevent suicide and do what small part I can to honor those we have lost. So, for National Law Enforcement Suicide Awareness Day on Sept. 26, I'm reposting this interview with Inspector Steve Hough who along with Karen Solomon and Dr. Jeffrey McGill founded Blue H.E.L.P., a non-profit organization committed to honoring the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers who have been lost to suicide and to supporting their families and loved ones. It is the only organization in the country that collects LE suicide data. Blue H.E.L.P. also works to de-stigmatize mental health and job stress issues and connects officers to wellness and treatment programs. Blue H.E.L.P. is the organization that in 2020 designated Sept. 26 as National Law Enforcement Suicide Awareness Day. At Blue H.E.L.P.'s website https://bluehelp.org/ you can find important information on services; stories of family members who have lost their LEO to suicide; the Honor Wall recognizing the service of those officers; and information on what you can do for National Law Enforcement Suicide Awareness Day.Blue Help is part of First Help which extends the same honor and services to all first responders and military veterans lost to suicide. This month, First Help unveiled Heroes Memorial Park in Rockwall, Texas which features the monument they are creating on which the names of all first responders and military veterans lost to suicide will be etched. Here is a link with more information:https://1sthelp.org/memorial-park/And one programming note, this originally aired as I said in 2021 when we were in the midst of the pandemic; Covid for that period was taking more lives than we were losing to suicide. It may come as a shock to some, but suicide has now become the number one killer of police officers in the United States, that's according to Blue H.E.L.P.  Police officers are constantly on the front lines dealing with tragedies and according to recent research, the stress of seeing, hearing and dealing with some of these horrors has led to a higher rate of suicide. In Fort Wayne, Indiana the Fort Wayne Police Department established their own mental wellness peer support program for officers in 2018. Dr. Darren Higgibotham is part of the program to help officers communicate openly about their struggles.   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

As of Aug 21st, 2021, 89 law enforcement officers in the United States have died by suicide, according to Blue H.E.L.P., a nonprofit that keeps these statistics. It's a quiet epidemic. Today's episode touches upon a topic we haven't discussed before. Death by suicide is sudden sometimes violent, and usually unexpected. Leslie is the surviving spouse of Thomas Forbes EOW June, 6 2011, Groton City Police Department.  SBS - Survivors of Blue Suicide Foundation was created in 2020. We foster hope, by uniting survivors of law enforcement suicide, to support one another and honor our fallen heroes. That is truly our mission as survivors, surviving families and coworkers.Today representing SBS , is Laurie Putnam, co-founder and director of services and outreach for Survivors of Blue Suicide Foundation. Check out https://www.survivorsofbluesuicide.org/I start this story by asking Leslie to share some details about her relationship with her husband. Leslie said, "It always surprises me that my heart starts beating so rapidly when I start to share the story. It's not from nerves. I think the body just holds on to all these feelings which day to day we're not even aware of.  When I start to say his name, my heart gets so filled with memories and love. We were great together. We were married 31 years. Within our small community, I was a teacher, I still am a teacher. He was the police officer. We were very dedicated and well known in our community. We felt like we were living the dream of both our passions through our jobs and our family together. We were a very typical, strong loving group, the four of us.I asked, "As the spouse, watching your husband go through this, did you ever feel helpless?Leslie responded, "He first became a police officer in 1980 or 1981. At that time, the stigma of “you don't let your emotions get the better of you”, as a husband, as a father, and as a friend. He was the one we all depended upon. He was strong, he seemed fearless. If we needed anything, he was our go to person. I didn't know to help him. I honestly did not know we were at that point where he was considering suicide. It's hard for me to think it was a plan. In my heart, in my mind, I think it was this impromptu, suddenly thought that he couldn't take back on the morning he died by suicide. Join me in supporting Leslie, her family, community, and the SBS Foundation in shedding awareness on the Blue suicide epidemic. Included in the conversation are resources and groups available for survivors to share. SBS provides a safe and nurturing  environment for healing and dealing. On this week's episode we return to the Buckeye State to speak with Steve Click, Director of the Ohio Office of First Responder Wellness. We discuss how his professional, personal and professional experiences have facilitated his appointment to this unique position. Steve is poised to help all first responders and ultimately, the citizens of Ohio. He also explains how his state is taking a progressive approach in addressing first responder wellness.  According to Blue H.E.L.P., more than 940 first responders nationwide have taken their own lives over the last five years, with the majority of those deaths involving law enforcement officers. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, more officers die by suicide than in the line of duty, and compared to the general population, law enforcement officers report much higher rates of depression, PTSD, burnout and other anxiety-related mental health conditions. Research also shows that stress from a career in law enforcement causes higher rates of secondary trauma such as heart diseases, divorce, alcoholism and other psychological illnesses.Guest Bio: Steven M. Click serves as the Director of First Responder Wellness for the Ohio Department of Public Safety, Office of Criminal Justice Services.  Prior to his current position, he served as the First Responder Liaison for Ohio Mental Health & Addiction Services.  Steve is a retired lieutenant from the Ohio State Highway Patrol where he served for 36 years, completing his career assigned to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Office of Personnel / Ohio ASSIST program.  Steve has been involved in peer support with the Ohio State Highway Patrol's Member's Assistance Team (MAT) since its inception in 2002 and previously served as the Operational Commander.  Prior to retirement, he oversaw all aspects of the team including policies, activations and training. He has been active in peer support since being CISM trained in 1993.  He was deployed to New York City twice after the 9/11 attacks and worked with the NYPD peer support program, POPPA.  He helped bring the Post Critical Incident Seminars to Ohio.  He has been utilized as a peer in South Carolina, Kentucky, Texas and Georgia, for their PCIS / STLS programs.  He serves as the lead trainer for several training programs offered by OCJS, having provided training to a number of public safety and civilian agencies across Ohio. Officer Rick Nilos dedicated his life to helping others, as a police officer and a US Marine. It was in his death that Blue Wives Matter became inspired to help the families who are left behind. It is our mission to provide the support that families need in their time of loss and grief. We support families no matter the cause of death.   Blue Wives Matter has provided support to over 100 widows and widowers. Support has been provided financially and emotionally. This year we plan to offer mental health grants for those in need while dealing with grief.   Blue Wives Matter also honors the children of officers who have died through the Patches of Honor Program. Each month, these children receive police patches in the mail. Patches are donated from agencies and officers all over the world. As the children build their patch collection, they feel connected to the law enforcement community.   Timestamps •Why are retired first responders at a high risk of suicide? •The surprising level of support for the families of fallen officers •Law enforcement agencies can handle the aftermath of suicide better •What is stopping first responders from seeking help with mental wellness? •How Blue Wives Matter provides support to families •Recognize when you need help and ask for it •Robert's advice for proper self-care: separate yourself from your work   Links   Connect with Shell Pavlis:   AFSP Board Member, Project 2025 Champion for Orange County, CA Realtor® Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties shellpavlis.afsp@gmail.com All Shell's Social: https://linktr.ee/shellseeshell   Connect with our guests, Robert and Kristen Sweaza: BlueWivesMatter@gmail.com RSweaza206@gmail.com Blue Wives Matter website: https://www.bluewivesmatter.net/ Copline: https://www.copline.org/ Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) https://www.concernsofpolicesurvivors.org/ Survivors of Blue Suicide (SBS): https://www.survivorsofbluesuicide.org/ Blue H.E.L.P. : https://bluehelp.org/ Council on Aging OC https://www.coasc.org   Children's Hospital of Orange County https://www.choc.org/mental-health/ Hoag Hospital https://www.hoag.org/about-hoag/community-benefit/hoag-programs/mental- health-services/ University of California, Irvine https://counseling.uci.edu/services/ Let's Stop Suicide. On Today's Podcast This week I sit down with Christy Lister. Christy Lister a mother of three children and former wife of a police officer, who after 25 years at the police department died by suicide in June of 2019. Christy is passionate about speaking up on mental health for police officers, first responders, and their families while advocating for changes within the mental health policies amongst the departments. Christy has been working with active/retired officers and their families providing education to allow them to understand that mental health is not a matter that should be overlooked or shunned as it has been in the past Christy is a founding board member of a local non-for-profit, The Harvesting Hope Project, that allows First Responders and their families to come together in a safe and private rural setting.   How to Connect with Christy christylister@gmail.com   Why Blue H.E.L.P.? It is the mission of Blue H.E.L.P. to reduce mental health stigma through education, advocate for benefits for those suffering from post-traumatic stress, acknowledge the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers we lost to suicide, support families after a suicide, and to bring awareness to suicide and mental health issues. In this conversation, I talk to Lindsey Doolittle, a suicide (police sergeant's) widow, a loss survivor, but also an advocate and an activist, an artist and an author. We discuss how her husband's police department shunned and shamed her, where she found hope, and how she is living with her loss while providing meaningful support to others now. There is a LOT to take away from this conversation! In Lindsey's own words... "I choose not to sweep my husband's suicide under the rug. I'll never get over his death, but I can get through it..by speaking out and raising awareness."Here are all of the websites and more we talked about during our conversation Get her children's book "Goodnight Mr. Vincent Van Gogh" here on Amazon.
