Mental health stigma remains a major issue in combating loneliness and the mental health crisis, and research shows that men are significantly less likely to seek help. In this episode, sponsored by Learning Enterprise at Arizona State University, we talk with young men about mental health and masculinity. We also interview Dr. Ben Harris, a clinical psychologist, about his experiences working with adolescent boys and how he fosters connection through group therapy. On July 16th, there's officially a new number to call (or TEXT!!) when you or a loved one is experiencing a mental health crisis. 988 - it's like 911, but for anyone experiencing suicidal thoughts or substance abuse or any other type of mental health crisis. When you call 988, you'll reach a real human, who is trained to provide support and connect you with the help you need.Dr. Margie Balfour is a psychiatrist and the Chief of Quality and Clinical Innovation at Connections Health Solutions in Phoenix, Arizona. She has been working hard to advocate for this number and fight for implementation of 988.I loved talking to her about what this new number means for us and how we can use it, the warning signs we can look for in ourselves and our loved ones who are struggling, and what she sees as the future of mental health care.988 is a huge step, but there's still so much more to be done. The 988 Implementation Act was introduced in Congress in March of 2022, but has not been passed yet. The goal is that when someone is in crisis, they have someone to call, someone to come, and somewhere to go if it's needed. Of course, there is money needed to make people available to call, to show up, and to fund the places they might go. So the bill would provide federal funding and guidance for states to actually implement their 988 and crisis systems, including requiring all health insurance plants to cover crisis services, implementing a national suicide prevention awareness campaign, and providing funding for community-based crisis response centers.Read about the 988 Implementation Act: https://bit.ly/988implementationYou can keep up with Mentally Together on Instagram @mentallytogetherpod. Retired Police Captain Robert Sweaza and his wife, Kristen, are my guests in Part Two of Mental Illness with Police Officers, where we discuss mental illness and how it relates to law enforcement officers. Kristen and Robert are the founders of Blue Wives Matter, a nonprofit dedicated to providing support for the families of fallen law enforcement officers. In this conversation, we talk about the particular challenges of mental health and suicide prevention education in law enforcement, the mental health stigma as it relates to first responders, and what goes into supporting the families of fallen officers.   If you are in crisis or know someone who is...please call: Suicide Lifeline at 1-800- 273-8255 or text the word “help” to 741-741 http://afsp.org/get-help   About Blue Wives Matter:   Blue Wives Matter was founded in 2017 after the untimely death of Fountain Valley California Police Officer Rick Nilos. Officer Rick Nilos dedicated his life to helping others, as a police officer and a US Marine. It was in his death that Blue Wives Matter became inspired to help the families who are left behind. It is our mission to provide the support that families need in their time of loss and grief. We support families no matter the cause of death.   Blue Wives Matter has provided support to over 100 widows and widowers. Support has been provided financially and emotionally. This year we plan to offer mental health grants for those in need while dealing with grief.   Blue Wives Matter also honors the children of officers who have died through the Patches of Honor Program. Each month, these children receive police patches in the mail. Patches are donated from agencies and officers all over the world. As the children build their patch collection, they feel connected to the law enforcement community.   Timestamps •Why are retired first responders at a high risk of suicide? •The surprising level of support for the families of fallen officers •Law enforcement agencies can handle the aftermath of suicide better •What is stopping first responders from seeking help with mental wellness? •How Blue Wives Matter provides support to families •Recognize when you need help and ask for it •Robert's advice for proper self-care: separate yourself from your work   Links   Connect with Shell Pavlis:   AFSP Board Member, Project 2025 Champion for Orange County, CA Realtor® Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties shellpavlis.afsp@gmail.com All Shell's Social: https://linktr.ee/shellseeshell   Connect with our guests, Robert and Kristen Sweaza: BlueWivesMatter@gmail.com RSweaza206@gmail.com Blue Wives Matter website: https://www.bluewivesmatter.net/ Copline: https://www.copline.org/ Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) https://www.concernsofpolicesurvivors.org/ Survivors of Blue Suicide (SBS): https://www.survivorsofbluesuicide.org/ Blue H.E.L.P. : https://bluehelp.org/ Council on Aging OC https://www.coasc.org   Children's Hospital of Orange County https://www.choc.org/mental-health/ Hoag Hospital https://www.hoag.org/about-hoag/community-benefit/hoag-programs/mental- health-services/ University of California, Irvine https://counseling.uci.edu/services/ Let's Stop Suicide. It grieves her heart to see people settle for status quo when the is a wild and free life just millimeters away. Her personal story is one of determination and leaving what doesn't work behind. Completing her Master of Science in Addiction Counseling concurrent to a role as Clinical Supervisor, then Managing Director, Britten ensures patients are treated with dignity and that care is tailored, time-bound, and specific. "Individual mental health is the axis point to family stability, marketplace innovation, and overall wellness." As a Licensed Advanced Drug and Alcohol Counselor, Britten has her MAC from the National Certification Commission for Addiction Professionals and is committed to see staff and patients reach the goals they did not believe possible. You will often hear her talking about Pacific Solstice being the leading force to change the landscape of psychiatry. Combining services, neurological, social, and psychological, she educates families to move from scarcity and deficits (what she calls a wasteland) to psychiatric care that is collaborative and strengths-based (what she calls a capital city). "This ultra-personal space of the service sector demands innovation and hospitality. Given over time, generations, not just individuals, live a different narrative... one of courage, health, and connection." Episode #91:   This was such a special and unique episode. We have never had a podcast like this before. Jared and Robert talk mental health as men and also do something that has never been done before on Louder Now. Jared and Robert take 7 things you may have heard others say to you when you are suffering and struggling.  They go back and forth with discussion.   Language is so important when we talk about mental illness and mental health. We can easily assume and say the wrong thing to those who are suffering. Having empathy when times are tough is really important.    Here are 7 phrases/ sayings we discuss on this episode:   1.      Don't tell someone to snap out of it..that is not possible...something like that.  2.      Have you ever read any of the books written by ____________ ( author )? He/she has written great stuff about _____________ ( ie. mental health ) 3.      I'm not sure if I can help you because I've never really experienced what you are going through. 4.      Have you ever tried Meditation? 5. Things could always be worse..by trying to compare it minimizes the struggle/ dehumanizes the person. 6. It is all in your head..This is first of all not accurate because depression and mental illness is also in the body..it affects everything. It can't be this simple.. 7. It is all a part of God's plan..this could cover any faith or whatever your higher power is..trust in that is helpful but can be harmful. No one really knows God's plan. How can we give a reason when we don't fully know the reason for ourselves?   Robert's BIO:   Robert Manolson, BA, CCDP (Certified Career Development Professional), Leading Fun At Work & Team Engagement Expert, & Mental Health Champion is the Creator & Facilitator of Powerful Play Experiences, Positive Workplace Mental Health…For Teams.   For 13 years now, Robert has traveled throughout Alberta facilitating the most amazing team development & team success workshop experiences. His message is simple. “Business Leaders! Never, ever doubt the impact of fun at work, and building a culture of highly engaged and happy teams. This truly is the easiest and most cost effective strategy to raise positive mental health levels at your workplace.”   If you want to reach out to Robert you can find him:   www.facebook.com/powerfulplay www.linkedIn.com/in/robertmanolson  www.instagram.com/powerfulplayexperiences   End of show notes: National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/ Please call: Suicide Lifeline at 1-800- 273-8255 or text the word “help” to 741-741 http://afsp.org/get-help Also nami.org is a great resource. Professional Certified Coach Michelle Ahnang knows very well how not allowing yourself to grieve can hurt you far after you've lost a loved one to suicide. 15 years ago, Michelle's husband killed himself. Their family decided not to tell people the truth about his death for some time, which made Michelle's healing process long and arduous. In this episode, she talks to Hope Out of the Darkness about the words that got her attention and helped her decide to get herself well, then turn her experience into a platform to help others with their own mental health challenges.   If you are in crisis or know someone who is...please call: Suicide Lifeline at 1-800- 273-8255 or text the word “help” to 741-741 http://afsp.org/get-help   About Michelle:   Success is a strange thing. It's never a linear path, but a collection of events and our reactions to them. What we do with what we are presented is up to us. It makes sense then that our success is also up to us.   My path has not been a linear one, as so many of us have experienced. Growing up with emotional abuse in a constrictive house my sense of worth and worthiness were eroded, obscuring my identity. I learned that in order to be safe, I must become invisible and silent. I lived by others' expectations, never realizing my own. I remained this way into adulthood, my marriage and new motherhood.   But then the unthinkable happened.   My husband of 12 years, my best friend, died by suicide. With two young children to look after, I shifted into survival mode without ever processing my own grief, confusion and anger. Meanwhile, my husband's suicide lingered over me, the stigma stripping me of my ability to speak the truth of both him and what happened. I remained shame-driven.   Climbing out of silence.   I lived that way for over ten years, until I was no longer able to carry this backpack of shame and guilt and silence. I was forced to confront everything--my childhood, my husband's death, and my identity as a widow, all while raising my two beautiful children alone. I started going to therapy and began the hard work of healing and discovering who I was. I learned that my voice was stronger than silence and that I was more than the singular events that brought me to this place.   The true me.   It's from these experiences that my coaching practice was born. Throughout my healing and discovery process, I learned what it meant to guide others living with mental health challenges, and the lethal impact of stigma and silence.   This is what I do:   I help strip the silence, shatter the stigma, and get you on the path to becoming who you truly are. I work to support families faced with mental health challenges, individuals who are ready to stop their own cycle of self-sabotage, and professionals struggling with balance. This is my mission.   I hold a BA in Psychology from York University, am a Professional Certified Coach (PCC), and a Certified Professional Co-Active Coach (CPCC). I am Mental Health First Aid certified through the Mental Health Commission of Canada. I am also trained in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction and Mindfulness Training for Emotional Resilience, and am an active public speaker and educator.   I'm an avid lover of dance, reading and general decompression. My sons, Eric and Zack, are my world, although they love to roll their eyes at me, particularly when I'm dancing.   Timestamps   ⦁ Michelle's husband's struggle with mental health ⦁ The after effects of her husband's suicide and the lie that made it worse ⦁ Finding the motivation to heal and the therapy she needed ⦁ It's alright to be angry ⦁ How has the stigma faded over the last 15 years? ⦁ Coming clean and working through it together ⦁ Being mindful about moving toward healing ⦁ Setting boundaries about your comfort level ⦁ What we can all do to help end the stigma ⦁ We are in control of our mental health: things you can do daily to improve your mental health ⦁ Mental health first aid - the CPR for mental health ⦁ How to use your phone Notes app to give yourself a boost   Links   Connect with Shell Pavlis: AFSP Volunteer, Advocate, Event Sponsor, Give Back Partner Realtor® Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties shellpavlis.afsp@gmail.com All Shell's Social: https://linktr.ee/shellseeshell Connect with our guest, Michelle Anhang: (647) 886-4616   Connect with Michelle Anhang: www.michelleanhang.com BOOK ONLINE https://calendly.com/michelle-anhang Follow Michelle on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/michelleanhangcoaching Follow Michelle on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/michelleanhangcoaching/   Council on Aging OC https://www.coasc.org Children's Hospital of Orange County https://www.choc.org/mental-health/ Hoag Hospital https://www.hoag.org/about-hoag/community-benefit/hoag-programs/mental-health-services/ University of California, Irvine https://counseling.uci.edu/services/   Let's Stop Suicide. Forgive Yourself and Take Charge with Jennifer Sandowsky

Host: Shell Pavlis Guest: Jennifer Sandowsky   Jennifer Sandowsky literally wrote the book on exploring the role of unresolved emotions so that we can shine the light of forgiveness on ourselves to liberate us from the victim inside. In this candid interview, she highlights the importance of advocating for yourself, understanding all courses of available treatment, and using a tool like her Mental Health Life Report. Jennifer gives great advice on how to have an open dialogue with your health professionals and daily practices for your own empowerment to heal.   If you are in crisis or know someone who is...please call: Suicide Lifeline at 1-800- 273-8255 or text the word “help” to 741-741 http://afsp.org/get-help   Jennifer Sandowsky grew up in New Jersey with a mother, brother, and aunt who all had schizophrenia. An extremely chaotic upbringing, along with frequent disputes with her Father, was followed by the tragic deaths of her closest friend at the age of 14, "when she was hit by a car and dragged to her death in front of Jennifer," and the murder of her grandfather at the age of 16. She was also expelled from high school and placed in a facility for "emotionally troubled youngsters." Years later, her life improved, and Jennifer graduated from college with a B.A. in Psychology, then went on to have a long career in pharmaceutical sales, selling both antidepressants and antipsychotics. Through Forgiveness Jennifer and her father have established a very close and loving relationship.   Jennifer approaches mental health through "journeys" of oneself in ordinary life events that we can all connect to, yet in a casual and inviting manner. Unlike other systems that offer a more linear or scientific view, this approach helps to break down the “good, bad, and ugly” within us all.   Timestamps   00:00 Introduction 2:20 The Secret Chamber helps you release harmful feelings and start healing 5:52 How Jennifer's Mental Health Life Report helps you empower yourself to grow 13:41 Is "pro-information" different than "anti-medication"? 15:26 Make sure you understand the Black Box Warning 23:43 A first-hand account of medication and mental health 27:40 Why you should examine the risks and benefits of starting and stopping medications 30:58 How to have an open conversation with your doctor and advocate for your own health 36:50 Jennifer's tips on keeping yourself healthy   Connect with Shell Pavlis:   AFSP Board Member, Treasurer, Project2025 Champion, Give Back Partner Realtor® Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties shellpavlis.afsp@gmail.com All Shell's Social: https://linktr.ee/shellseeshell   Connect with our guest, Jennifer Sandowsky:   Get Jennifer's book here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1703418484?pf_rd_r=1A7GDEV16BE9YMVTQQG8&pf_rd_p=5ae2c7f8-e0c6-4f35-9071-dc3240e894a8&pd_rd_r=eb28fa55-9608-4511-b263-97b21dd2a5c3&pd_rd_w=Ae3Qm&pd_rd_wg=8ilCc&ref_=pd_gw_unk Get the FREE Mental Health Life Report here: https://mailchi.mp/1caf9ca60d72/freementalhealthlifereport?fbclid=IwAR0fPYRMlwVa6C7YVw_CEd90NTxeY-D4Mtmnv-gmaKNqxR3P-zdo5lQvALI   Jennifer's Email: thesecretchamberofforgiveness@yahoo.com   https://afsp.org/chapter/orange-county https://bewelloc.org/ Council on Aging OC https://www.coasc.org Children's Hospital of Orange County https://www.choc.org/mental-health/ Hoag Hospital https://www.hoag.org/about-hoag/community-benefit/hoag-programs/mental-health-services/ University of California, Irvine https://counseling.uci.edu/services/   Let's Stop Suicide. Host: Shell Pavlis Guest: Joseph Reid   A support group allows members to exchange personal experiences and thoughts, coping methods, and firsthand knowledge about mental health. A support group can bridge the gap between your own coping strategies and the need for emotional assistance for many people. A person's connection with a doctor or other mental health staff may not give enough emotional support. Groups made up of family, friends, and others who have had similar experiences may be a strong and influential tool for meeting your emotional needs and helping you through even the most trying times.   If you are in crisis or know someone who is...please call:   Suicide Lifeline at 1-800- 273-8255 or text the word “help” to 741-741 http://afsp.org/get-help   Joseph Reid has had a passion for loving and helping people from a very early age. He is the founder and Executive Director of Broken People, an international mental health peer support group. He is also very active as a peer support specialist and family advocate with NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness), the nation's largest grassroots mental health nonprofit organization.   He is extremely passionate about following God's direction, loving and serving his wife Melissa of 24 years, and trying to keep up with his four awesome grown kids. He currently oversees several brilliant writers on his website's blog that can be found at: www.broken-people.org   Joseph has created a practical and easy-to-use scale for measuring your everyday mental wellness. He provides good tips on journaling and how to make your practice more enjoyable for those of us who are uncomfortable with the concept of journaling in general. The origins of Julia Susara's chronic fatigue are hard to pin down.  She still doesn't know exactly how it started but suspects that a deeply broken heart had something to do with it.  She spent about three years going through some excruciating physical sensations: immense chills, brain fogs, pregnancy nightmares and the feeling that her blood was about to boil through her skin. Doctors weren't able to figure out what was wrong, nor were the array of alternative healers she visited. Feeling that no one was able to help, she was at the edge of giving up. But, at her brother's suggestion, she reluctantly visited a hypnotherapist who gave Julia instructions to swim daily in cold water.  So she started jumping in the ocean each day and felt a strange and near immediate change in her symptoms.  If you're feeling suicidal, here are some numbers you can call to speak with someone who will listen. USA Suicide Lifeline: 1-800-273-8255UK Samaritans: 116 123Canada Crisis Services: 1.833.456.4566Japan Tell JP:  03-5774-0992Australia Lifeline: 13 11 14Denmark Livslinien: 70 201 201Other countries: check the list available at suicide.org~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~This episode marks the end of Season 9.  Season 10 is coming, but the date is currently unknown.  Stay subscribed!  And keep an eye on the HBM Patreon page for an upcoming message with a season debrief and some musings about the show's future.  That post will be public, so no need to be a member to read it.  Also, please note that due to some summer busy-ness, Jeff will not be able to run an HBM summer art exchange this year.  Sorry about that.  Thank you for all your support through Season 9.  It is such a pleasure to make this show. ~~~~~~~~~~Producer: Jeff EmtmanMusic: Julia's choir group and The Black SpotSponsor: AnimasusEmilius Martinez is an illustrator and designer who runs Animasus.  Animasus can help you design email campaigns, websites and improve the overall branding for your business.  Speaking of which, Emilius designed the new HBM t-shirt, which is wonderful. Suicide, attempted suicide, and purposeful self-harm have all increased as a result of this increase in social media use, particularly among adolescents. According to several studies, greater use and exposure to social media platforms predicts an increased likelihood of undesirable consequences such as bullying and may lead to suicide.   Here are some suggestions for using social media in a healthy and productive manner.   Follow people and things that bring you joy. Unfollow unhealthy accounts. Support and connect with others in real life. Reduce your screen time. Take an extended break away from social media when needed.   Marie Cradle joins this episode of Hope Out of the Darkness to talk about the dangers of social media and offers tips and tricks on how to become more conscious of when you're starting to develop toxic and potentially harmful behaviour. If you are in crisis or know someone who is...please call:   Suicide Lifeline at 1-800- 273-8255 or text the word “help” to 741-741 http://afsp.org/get-help   Host: Shell Pavlis Guest: Nancy Cooper   Suicide is the tenth most common cause of death in the United States. Each year, over 45,000 Americans die by suicide, averaging 123 suicides each day. According to a 2014 assessment, despite the high risk of suicide in the United States, around 40% of people with mental illnesses do not seek medical help. One of the main reasons why people don't seek help, according to researchers, is stigma.   Suicide is a sensitive subject that should be handled with care and respect. It's not simply about being politically correct. Whether we're having a conversation, talking to someone who has lived experience, or writing about the problem in a professional situation. It all boils down to saving lives.   As our knowledge and awareness of suicide grows, so must our approach to discussing it. E103 - With the stress of being a busy mom of three, and the isolation of living solo especially during shutdown, we talk quite a bit about our anxiety and depression. This is a re-airing of a livestream event hosted by the Victims & Villains podcast. We were honored to be given an hour during the 24hr awareness-athon during which we talked about mental health, parenting, genetics, lifestyle, and what has worked for us to get through tough times. We go over antidepressant medication and anxiety-reducing tactics, talk about suicide trends, fatigue, and finding purpose. In this episode, we also laugh a lot (Weens falls off her chair right off the bat!), we talk a bit about Glow, Marc Maron, Love Fraud, and trivia questions (email your answers to win swag!).The stories continue with nose and boobie punching, women's football team tryouts, Survivor auditions, stunt driving school, and starring in the Sega Fighting Vipers video game. Why does the pierced nose logo look so familiar?! And the fun highlight - we watch our avatar selves wrestle other podcasting women in the Cretin's Guild Championship Tournament via their WWE 2K19 video game! How far does Mouse make it in the rounds? How about Weens? Do we get crowned Champion? How 'bout those outfits? For visuals, watch on our YouTube channel or the original on Cretin's Guild YouTube. In this episode I educate my listeners about suicide and discuss how it comes along with depression often. People who struggle with suicidal thoughts should know that they actually want to live but are dealing with dysfunctional thought patterns and are fighting against hopeless and negative thoughts. I encourage those who deal with depression with SI not to identify with it and to separate self from the mental illness. As we approach National Suicide Prevention Week, it sometimes feels like a multitude of voices are clamoring for attention with various (and sometimes conflicting) messages. How can we cut through the clutter and be heard? One place where we can learn lessons is from is big business. A recent article by Peter Gasca in Inc. magazine called “Get Your Message Heard With This Simple 5- Step Checklist” offers helpful tips to the suicide prevention community. The 5-Step Checklist for Effective Messaging Add Value — does your message improve the lives of those who receive it? Is it helpful? Is there a clear call to action? Be Clear — does your message get to the point and have a direct call to action? Are you using jargon or acronyms? Be Concise — does your message use as few words as possible? Better yet — have you considered an infographic to convey your message? Be Compelling — does your message use urgency, storytelling, humor or something unexpected to get the receiver’s attention? How are you engaging others? Be Credible — are you trustworthy? Use citations and get your information from highly credible sources. Recently, with major news coverage of the Netflix series “13 Reasons Why” and celebrity suicide deaths, we are having more conversations about suicide, but are we having the right conversations? Are we telling a more powerful tale? In this episode Dr. Bart Andrews shares his story of deciding to “come out” as a suicide attempt survivor, how he challenges “safe messaging guidelines,” and what he believes are most important suicide prevention messages need to be. Thank you for supporting  this podcast as we share helpful information surrounding Narcism and mental illness awareness.  I wanted to make this episode, because I believe that these situations occur, but how can we protect ourselves, from the toxic abuse that we once endured. How easy is it to get sucked back into the cycle? When you are faced with life altering, similar to what I’ve experienced; you must continue to support and care at distance. Your instinct is to want to show your support to the one who left you in a terrible place in your life. You have to have courage, you cannot backtrack and must listen to your gut instinct. What’s YOUR platform? Are you using it for good? These are the questions my guest had to answer when he had started a podcast about the things he was most passionate about--but it was just entertainment. He felt a conviction that prompted him to address mental health, with which he had a personal history. Now he is spreading the word, fighting against the stigma around depression and suicide, and doing loads of legitimate good for our world. Josh Burkey, aka Captain Nostalgia, is the host behind the podcast, Victims and Villains. As a survivor of depression and addiction, Josh aims to break the stigma of mental health issues through conversation and relationships of pop culture. He lives in Pennsylvania with his wife and two cats.  TWEET:  Josh Burkey uses comics to address mental health issues and fights the stigma that is attached to them. Listen in today on #ChasingDreams  Making a difference What do you do when a bad day goes horribly wrong? Josh had a bad day at work that led to a demotion, which sent him spiraling into depression. He and his best friend decided to start a podcast in which they talked about films, comic books, and TV shows. They had a great time, but it wasn’t long before Josh felt a conviction that he should be using this platform to make a difference in people’s lives. They did a special Suicide Prevention Awareness show with topics like overcoming thoughts of suicide, self-harm, depression, and addiction. Even though the show was meant as a one-time thing, the positive feedback set them apart in the podcast arena, and the focus on mental health became a regular part of the show. They enjoy engaging in conversations that were lacking in the comic book culture. TWEET: Using your platform to help others struggling with mental health issues is a great way to also talk about Suicide Prevention. Let your friends and family know you are always there for them! #ChasingDreams Positivity at Comic-Con Do you think pop culture has many communities with positivity and acceptance? You would probably say NO, but consider the dedicated fans and attendees of the various Comic-Con events. Many in this community desire to give inspiration and escape, along with wide acceptance and commonality across cultures, ages, genders, and sexual orientations. Even though like any other group, there are pockets of negativity, those are looked at by most as just “background noise.” Josh explains how participating in Comic-Con events can restore your faith in humanity and at how people interact. He says everyone should attend at least one! TWEET: #Comic-Con events can restore your faith in #Humanity! #ChasingDreams Fighting against the stigma Would you say that suicide is a problem mainly for young people? That’s a common misconception about suicide, but it is truly a problem across all age levels. Although suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for ages 10-24, the most common age group it affects is middle-aged men. Mental illness has such a stigma around it and we don’t talk about it like we should, for two main reaons, according to Josh. One reason is that it’s not a sickness you can SEE in someone, and someone can hide it well until it’s too late. Another reason is that we want so badly to not appear any less than the person we portray on social media. We don’t want people to know the truth, but the image we portray isn’t usually the truth. Josh’s ultimate goal is for these topics to be taught within the curriculum in schools and to get the conversations out there that, ”It’s OK to admit that you’re not OK.” TWEET: It’s ok to admit that you are not ok. Get the help you need by reaching out and letting someone know you are struggling! #ChasingDreams Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”Understand that, at the end of the day, there are good days and bad days. Never let a bad day make you lose sight of a good day. No matter the kind of day, you have worth and value. Never give up. Never, ever compromise. Stay true to who you are.” OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [:10] How we met through mutual friends [:40] Something different and unique: A nerdy podcast merged with mental health [4:00] Support, kindness, and positivity at Comic-Con [8:15] How a Comic-Con can restore your faith in humanity [9:40] The common misconception about suicide [11:46] Why the stigma about mental health?
