Welcome back to Las Platicas, a show hosted by Comadres y Comics, where we meet with creators and friends to talk about upcoming projects, events and all around awesome news in the comic community. Today, we welcome back Madeleine Holly-Rosing, award-winning writer and creator of the Boston Metaphysical Society, and now the mind behind a powerful new 4-issue mini-series: Morgana Pendragon — currently crowdfunding on Kickstarter. We are excited to dive into a story that reclaims one of mythology's most misunderstood women. In Morgana Pendragon, Madeleine isn't just telling an Arthurian tale — she's rewriting how we see power, age, and womanhood. As Madeleine puts it: ‘When you get to a certain age, especially as a woman, you find you are less and less represented in stories unless you're the mom, the grandmother, the feisty aunt, or something even more banal—the wicked witch. Morgana Pendragon is my response.' Get ready to explore how Madeleine is turning old tropes into new power in Morgana Pendragon #1. Welcome back, Madeleine@mcholly1

After Jimmie fled the library, Caitlin and Samuel searched for him, but to no avail. Worried the young man might do something rash after Caitlin revealed that Jimmie was the link between the ghost ship and the spirits in the library, they still have unanswered questions—Why were the spirits still haunting the library and who killed them? And where did Charles Emerson's grandfather fit into all of this? The remaining grandchildren of the Great Houses of Emerson, Gray, and Bartlett are now temporarily safe within the Faraday Cage Granville built at House Emerson. However, Jimmie's arrest and Thomas Edison's arrival has put the team in an awkward spot. And Charles Emerson's threat to prosecute Caitlin hasn't helped either. Caitlin has told Samuel and Granville that Jimmie admitted to visiting Lizzie, Charles Emerson's granddaughter, but it was to warn her not kidnap her. During our discussion, Madeleine talks about how you can catch up with comics and other venues the Society has explored, including their new audio drama, and what the future might hold for this great team of an ex-Pinkerton detective, a spirit photographer, and a genius scientist who battle supernatural forces in late 1800's Boston. My guest this week is Madeleine Holly-Rosing, creator of the Boston Metaphysical Society series. Since beginning that series, Madeleine has created graphic novels, novels short stories, a coloring book, and is currently working an audio drama. Oh, and she's run NINE Kickstarters and has literally written the book on the subject: Kickstarter for the Independent Creator. And she's made helping others succeed one of her chief business priorities. We talk about Kickstarter (including her latest), the intersection between screenwriting and graphic novels, working with collaborators for those graphic novels—and how much more diverse creators and fans are than many people realize—leaving room to be surprised in your creative work, and much more. Check out the show notes at fycuriosity.com, and join the conversation on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter!
In the latest episode, The Fanbase Weekly welcome special guest Madeleine Holly-Rosing (writer - Boston Metaphysical Society, Boston Metaphysical Society: The Ghost Ship Audio Drama) to discuss the latest geek news stories of the week, including whether fans are tired of interconnected universes in media, the "winners and losers" of NYCC 2021 according to The Comics Beat, Scott Snyder's thoughts on print vs. digital comics, and how media can more authentically (and more often!) represent individuals with disabilities.
The Fellowship is pleased to present our conversation with Madeleine Holly-Rosing, creator of Boston Metaphysical Society. She's launching a new Kickstarter this week (Oct 20) for her new audio drama, The Ghost Ship, so go check that out. We had a great conversation, and even squeeze in a few of our usual tangents

For March, Sean and Derek check out three very different webcomics. They begin with Roger Langridge's The Great McGonagall, a biographical treatment of William "Topaz" McGonagall, known historically as the worst poet in the world. This is a very new webcomic, having begun in January 2017, and in it Langridge takes an already cartoonish figure and plays it up for even more humor. As the guys point out, the artist's style is perfect for this kind of send up. Next, Sean and Derek turn their attention to Sufficiently Remarkable, Maki Naro's ongoing look at the struggles of a young artist trying to get by in New York City. Naro is one of the former contestants of Strip Search -- much like Abby Howard, whom the guys discussed back in October -- and, in fact, is how he first gained Sean's attention. As Derek reveals, this is a reality-based drama of interpersonal relationships, but one that struggles at times with the occasional pull into gag-strip formulas. Finally, and after a brief check in with Jim McClain about the progress of his and Paul Schultz's Poe and the Mysteriads, the guys round out the episode with a discussion of The Boston Metaphorical Society. Written by Madeleine Holly-Rosing and with art by Emily Hu, this is a steampunk-inspired narrative surrounding the paranormal investigations of a former Pinkerton agent, his uniquely talented colleagues, and the scientific exploits of Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Edison, Nikola Tesla, and Harry Houdini. This is the second webcomic of the month that mines history for its content, although unlike Roger Langridge's cartoon biography, this one uses the past as a springboard for its fantastical flourishes.

In this interview, Laura talks with Madeleine Holly-Rosing, writer and creator of the steampunk comic, Boston Metaphysical Society. The comic takes place in the late 1800s Boston. Though people may not think of them that way, comic books are sequential art. There are artists that are great at pinups and do posters but not have the skills to tell a story. Madeleineâs suggestions if you are interested in starting your own comic is to read indie comics. They key is to find the right artist. Art draws you in but the story makes you stay with comics. She suggests going to meetups and connecting others in the industry through friends. Go to comic cons, meet artist, post on comic Facebook groups connecting comic artists and creators. Once you connect with an artist, you should have a contract with a page rate $50 to 300 a page depending on experience. Madeleine met a colorist through a mutual friend and she uses Indonesia Color Labs. She raised the funds through a combination of self-funding and Kickstarter. You will also need an Inker for the cover and she opted not to internally. In terms of where to start, go with a premise first and then start with the characters that work within that premise to create the story with the characters. Build bios and spend a lot of time on them. Then do a page breakdown, take a scene and break it down into pages. 22 pages fits in standard comic length; Boston metaphysical is 132 page graphic novel broken into 6 comic books. A full screenplay, lends itself well into graphic novel. If you are new to comics and graphic novels, Madeleine suggests familiarizing yourself with people and creators, get to know comics out there and go to classes. She started doing reviews for fan-based press and this is a great way to get to know the medium. She noted that good lettering is really important. Bad lettering can really bring you down. Madeleine goes to 10-15 cons a year. She also suggested different cons to go to and how to make your con a successful experience. Interestingly, she pointed out that Kickstarter is one of the main publishers of independent comics.
