In this episode, James Langridge, Operations Manager of Near & Far Removals discusses how he's been in and out of the industry for the past 10-15 years, working in the family business, although he was hoping for a career in football. Near & Far Removals are based in Nottingham and was started in 2003 by James's parents, Martyn & Elaine Langridge. Near & Far offer domestic removals, packing, dismantling & re-erecting, house clearance/disposal, commercial relocation, crate hire and storage (using both self-storage units and shipping containers, as James doesn't like the 250 cuft wooden storage containers). James says that removals itself is a challenge he has had to overcome, especially key waits, which he goes on to have a little rant about. Other challenges include staff, which James enjoys and thrives upon, and tidiness, which includes vehicles & uniforms. James wouldn't change anything from his moving past as he believes it is a journey he is on. James's highpoints of being within the industry are working with different customers, different people, seeing different parts of the country and having a laugh on the job. The one thing James would like to change within the industry is, surprise, surprise, completion days. The advice James would give himself just starting out within the industry again is not to go over the top buying supplies, such as covers, as blankets are more than adequate. In the next 5 years James wants to continuing making Near & Far the best they can be by continuing to provide the best service possible. Industry wise, James doesn't see any changes apart from individuals themselves. Outside of the industry James is clearly a keen footballer, he also enjoys golf, fishing, evenings at the spa and nights out on the town with his mates. After working in the corporate sector for nearly 30 years (in varying sales and marketing roles), Shona decided to take a completely different career path and step into the world of yoga.  It took her a little while to navigate the transitions, but after 8 years of teaching yoga full time, she tells me that it feels completely natural to have taken that step change that combines a vocation with a passion.She teaches a variety of different yoga styles, including: bikram, vinyasa, yin, pilates and HIIT.She says, "We all have to start somewhere and there is never any ending to where Yoga can take you… I've come to believe that everything we do in our lives is some form of Yoga. There are always ways to grow and develop and this practice allows us to see ourselves as we truly are. Lucy absorbed the training very well - increasing her aerobic conditioning - "We need to build the base" with a polarized approach - The main goal was Kona - an altitude camp before St.George - Dan has developed Lucy as a Triathlete - Was Dan Surprised with Lucy's performance in IM 70.3 World Champs? 46.50 - Anne Haug – Roth (shame it was short due to road works... we will never know), 7.53.48 with a 31.36min win over Laura Siddall. 12 min lead off-bike over Langridge and Crowley, 2.43hr run. Thoughts on Anne's performance in Roth? Anne wasn't in a good place mentally before the race. What has changed with the training after 15 years? Anne did a 33min 10km road race last year. - She's a Ferrari - "we do a minimum amount of run training to optimize her performance" 54.45 - Jan Frodeno - 9 years with Jan - A target on his back - Collins Cup – fastest overall (20 sec in front of Gustav)? The decision not to race 70.3 World – A race between Gustav and Jan was missed. Tri-Battle Royale –– World Record – 7.35.39, Kona World Champion, Olympic Gold - How has the training changed over 9 years? Dan was surprised at Jan's low numbers when they started. What else is there for you and Jan? 1.06.00 - Collecting Data - What data - metabolic profile collecting at the beginning - Adaptation, Polarized (VO2 and base), Specific (Strength endurance), Race-specific - slowly increase, it's a step by step process over years - 1.12.40 - Retests in standardized training like an 8x 1km run - Dan doesn't like to stop training to test - he uses training to test and compare - You have to be honest with your athlete - You have to be careful in the words you choose 1.17.30 - Example of VO2 work - using hills for 8 x30 sec but build to 4 x 4min - what do you want to achieve and where is the athlete at the moment? How many times a week - 4-5 sessions split over the three sessions. The rest of the training is easy - VO2 max is NOT sprinting it's a controlled intensity 1.23.00 - Recovery - measuring using Heart Rate Variability and Sleep quality - each athlete is different and they can choose how they monitor - Glucose monitoring it can be interesting to watch 1.26.00 Conclude - Two questions 1. What is one tip you have for people on how to optimize their life? "Ask yourself, 'Are you happy doing what you're doing?" 2. Fenella says she is just a big kid at heart and loves what she does.  With the biggest smile on her face she finished Challenge Daytona in 7th position last year before going on to claim a silver medal at IRONMAN Coeur d'Alene in June of this year stamping her ticket to Kona finishing in 8:59:49, a sub 9 debut IRONMAN.  She has had her fair share of injuries over the years but through her infectious positivity, commitment to her craft  and her patience she has bounced back to deliver some performances she can be very proud of including her win at IRONMAN 70.3 Barcelona just one week after a bike crash in France which resulted in a DNF and stitches.  With an abundance of drive and determination coupled with natural talent and a thirst for success, the quietly spoken athlete lets her ability and performances do the talking.  Still in her twenties, on the cusp of a new decade,  Fenella has lots more fun to have in the sport of triathlon and there are plenty of podiums and medals in her future.

It's beginning to look as though California is headed into another multi-year drought. The snowpack is meager and contracted water supplies through the state's delivery systems are likely to be much less than requested. Farmers and cities are looking to groundwater to make up the difference, but even groundwater is heavily depleted. We catch up with British professional Fenella Langridge who always has a smile on her face and lives with her coach and partner Billy in her Mum's pub in the south of England. Fenella admits she can be quite shy but she's loads of fun when you get chatting to her and she has a heart of gold. She finished 7th at Challenge Daytona in 2020 and she trains in the pool in Bath alongside Olympian Vicky Holland and fellow pro India Lee. Away from triathlon, Fenella loves spending time in the kitchen, wouldn't mind going on Bake Off and is passionate about craft work. "This is really real. At the end of the day if you want to be fast, you have to be strong and powerful. It's even more prevelent for older athletes for general health and bone health. Ian was live and was joined by Briony Rawle and David Ellis from Shit-faced Shakespeare in the studio, ahead of their run of ‘Hamlet' at the Edinburgh Fringe. Also on the show was actor Elliot James Langridge, who stars in new film Habit, which is released on the 29th April. Actress Harriet Thorpe once again rang in to berate Ian for not seeing her show, Ruthless, The Musical, and Nat had an appraisal.

For March, Sean and Derek check out three very different webcomics. They begin with Roger Langridge's The Great McGonagall, a biographical treatment of William "Topaz" McGonagall, known historically as the worst poet in the world. This is a very new webcomic, having begun in January 2017, and in it Langridge takes an already cartoonish figure and plays it up for even more humor. As the guys point out, the artist's style is perfect for this kind of send up. Next, Sean and Derek turn their attention to Sufficiently Remarkable, Maki Naro's ongoing look at the struggles of a young artist trying to get by in New York City. Naro is one of the former contestants of Strip Search -- much like Abby Howard, whom the guys discussed back in October -- and, in fact, is how he first gained Sean's attention. As Derek reveals, this is a reality-based drama of interpersonal relationships, but one that struggles at times with the occasional pull into gag-strip formulas. Finally, and after a brief check in with Jim McClain about the progress of his and Paul Schultz's Poe and the Mysteriads, the guys round out the episode with a discussion of The Boston Metaphorical Society. Written by Madeleine Holly-Rosing and with art by Emily Hu, this is a steampunk-inspired narrative surrounding the paranormal investigations of a former Pinkerton agent, his uniquely talented colleagues, and the scientific exploits of Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Edison, Nikola Tesla, and Harry Houdini. This is the second webcomic of the month that mines history for its content, although unlike Roger Langridge's cartoon biography, this one uses the past as a springboard for its fantastical flourishes.

This week on the podcast, Gwen and Derek look at three very different recent titles. They begin with Carlos Giménez's Paracuellos. The original first two volumes of this comic, published in Spain in 1977 and 1982, have now been collected into a single-volume English translation (by Sonya Jones) and published by IDW's EuroComics imprint. The Paracuellos strips are Giménez's autobiographical look at his time in several of the Social Aid "homes" that were a part of Francisco Franco's fascist Spain. As Gwen and Derek reveal, the stories are stark and heartbreaking, and Giménez presents a difficult environment where oppression and apathy (at least in the context of the adults) shape young and vulnerable lives. They discuss not only the socio-political atmosphere of Paracuellos, but also Giménez's stylistic strategies for rendering this world. Next, the Guy and Gal with PhDs Talking about Comics look at two #1 issues just released this month: Roger Langridge and Andy Hirsch's The Baker Street Peculiars (KaBOOM! Studios) and Jimmie Robinson's Power Lines (Image Comics). The former is of particular interest to them, since Andy Hirsch is a friend of the show. This is the first of a four-issue series about a group of young outsiders who team up with whom appears to be Sherlock Holmes in 1930s London. The setup to this story is action-packed and exudes adventure, and Hirsch's art brings out both the dynamism and the fun that this narrative has to offer. Power Lines is a different take on race relations in the United States, and, in many ways, it's a very timely premise. A young African American male goes with his tagger friends into a white middle-class neighborhood, only to find himself a embroiled in some mysterious centuries-old power from which he cannot extricate himself. (Sort of like race in America?) Both Gwen and Derek like where Robinson seems to be going with the story, but they nonetheless wonder if he may be unexpectedly stepping into some ethnically tinged traps. However, the ambition is clearly there, and both cohosts are curious where Robinson's story will eventually lead.
