I really can't think of a better guest to discuss this universe. I found Jey to be an articulate and unusually accomplished artist, always finding a way to connect his projects to themes that matter to daily life while never pulling back from the imaginative and fantastic inventions that are the hallmarks of his style. I found this a most enjoyable conversation and hope the same for our audience.More about Jey and his beautiful work:New Orleans comic book/ manga artist known as JeyOdin, is the creator and owner of the series "Hammer" which is currently being serialized and published through Saturday AM. JeyOdin attended SCAD where he majored in Sequential Art. Jey's first few publications came out with Antarctic Press, and then through Arch Enemy he was published on USA today. He was also the artist on Lemonade Code, published through OniPress. The pseudonym "JeyOdin" is known online on all social media websites like Instagram, YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook. JeyOdin loves drawing but is a HUGE fan of spending time with his Wife, baby and three hilariously cute dogs.Links to Jey's beautiful works, here:** Special note- Jey is a wonderful mentor and offers so much help to other artists- his linktree below is full of wonderful info about this!Links to his Books: https://www.amazon.com/Books-Jey-Odin/s?rh=n%3A283155%2Cp_27%3AJey%2BOdinMore social links and his many wonderful classes:https://jeyodin.gumroad.com/https://linktr.ee/jeyodin#dccomic #marvel #fantasticfour #saturdayam #comic #cartoon #manga #charlesschulz #peanuts #charliebrown #1990s #1980s #1970s #1960s #1950s #2000s #superhero #education #adolescence #economics #politics #africanamerican #civilrights #housing #labor #work #xmen #robocop #fantasy #bullying #Japan #everydayhero #hero #superman #dogs #parenting #familyMore about us:Our podcast is a comprehensive examination of all matters aesthetic, all the arts and humanities, how they connect us, a celebration of the creative process across all of the arts and most of all, what it means to be human. Is crowdfunding the hero the comic scene needs? In Dec 2024 Diamond, the sole distributor of comics to most comic shops around the country, closed a distribution center leading to delays, damaged books, and retailer struggles. In mid Jan 2025, Diamond filed for bankruptcy. The industry as a whole is about to change. One place that is expected to see a huge growth is crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter. Already we have seen mid-level publishers like Antarctic Press and Dynamite launching campaigns to get their books directly to consumers. In this show we will discuss how indie creators are going to need to adapt to having higher level competition in the crowdfunding market. Destiny will choose 3 indie comic campaigns for us to review. After offering tips we will choose ONE to back and support. Stay to the end to see who will be chosen in the Comic Book Showdown of Ultimate Destiny because in the end...There can Be only ONE! Will the Diamond bankruptcy DESTROY small press comic books? Ben Dunn from Antarctic Press seems to think so. With Diamond in Chapter 11, small publishers will probably have to get in line behind big accounts that Diamond owes millions of dollars to. And where does this leave shops?

For the final New Comic Book Day of October 2019, I take a look at a recent horror anthology from Antarctic Press.
Writer John Ward is Creator Talks guest this week. John is the writer of Offbeats and Ultrabot Go! Go! Go! created by Tom Sacchi (interview #169). John has a four-part horror mini-series with art by Juan Romera and lettering by Eric Grissom. The first issue will be published September 4th through Antarctic Press. What's it about? Vegas tattoo artist Dee discovers her clients are becoming possessed by the tattoos she gave them. Her life is thrown into turmoil when she realizes her best friend Sarah has turned into a monstrous killer, seemingly controlled by her new tattoo. A guilty Dee sets out to save Sarah, but soon finds herself out of her depth as she faces off against forces she can barely comprehend. - Diamond Previews Did you know John has a Ph. D. in physics and his thesis dealt with String Theory? Taking the show to a whole new level, John breaks down String Theory for us in layman's terms. He also explains what is a spec script, why he writes them and what are his favorite shows are to base them on and why. We dig into to the themes found within Scratcher and what it is like working with Juan and Eric on the book. And during the Kicking Back With the Creator segment we discuss John's oddest job, his favorite beverage (and one of mine) and not just his island book but his island movies. I love it when I find a great comic that I can talk with you about! This week in Episode 382, I chat with Bill Williams about Punchline from Antarctic Press, a book that can now include me as a huge fan! Punchline has it all—Action, adventure, two strong female leads, and some great humor sprinkled perfectly in the dialogue! The first trade paperback and issue #6 have been released, so check with your local comics shop to order your copies and be sure to add Punchline to your pull list there! We talk about the book, how Bill enjoys working with artist Matthew Weldon, how the comic came to be, and some hints as to what we might expect in the future. Bill also has some great comments about the industry itself as well, so be sure to listen to this special episode today! Did you enjoy this interview? My guest is comic book producer and Brooklyn native Tom Sacchi, the mind behind the crime-noir Offbeats and the 1960s manga-style Ultrabot Go Go Go! Both comics are published through Antarctic Press. Tom begins by sharing his memory of the 1960s television cartoon series that introduced him to the world of comics. He also shares his memory of discovering a store, before the days of direct market distribution, which sold new and back issue comics and magazines. He eventually drifted away from superhero comics and explains why the independent boom of the 1980s and Marvel’s Epic line rekindled his interest in comics. Why did he want to make comics and what podcast and television series inspired Tom to become a producer of comic books? Just what are Belgian style comics and how did they influence Tom’s Offbeats? Who is the creative team on the series and why were they the best match for this Belgian-style comic? Which of these creators also helped make the one-shot Ultrabot Go Go Go! ? Tom explains why the art style of 1960s Japanese comics appeal to him and what they do that is so different from most comics that fits Tom penchant for quick paced story-telling. In the Kicking Back With The Creator Segment, we learn what would be Tom’s island book and who is the creator he would most like to meet. Both you have probably not heard of before this interview. Learn why the both book and creator earned Tom’s praise. Please take a moment to rate Creator Talks on iTunes: More about Tom Sacchi About Offbeats About Ultrabot Go Go Go! POST-APOCALYPSE NOW: After D. Bethel talks a bit about the California fires (he's safe albeit drenched in smoke from the Camp Fire), Andrew discusses his hour or so playing Fallout 76. #IRONSHITES: Richard Meyer and the ComicsGate controversy has been covered many times before on the show, and the latest installment has Richard Meyer aka "Comics & Diversity" putting his money where his mouth is. His 120-page graphic novel, Iron Sights, (written by Meyer, art by Ibai Canales) has been released (it cost $20 for a copy of the book if you contributed to its Indiegogo campaign) was summarily criticized by Twitter user, Jafleece, in a spectacular and validating fashion. The 60+ thread starts here. Andrew and D. discuss not only what they saw from the thread, but what this says about the claims Meyer and ComicsGate have been levying toward the industry for awhile now. END BITS: Also, they spend some time at the end to discuss the death of Stan Lee, below is the clip that D. mentioned was his favorite Stan Lee cameo, from this year's Marvel's Spider-Man by Insomniac Games. And, for good measure, the Pokémon: Detective Pikachu trailer. RELEVANT LINKS: Bethel, D. "Sketch Fridays #50 : Stan Lee - 1922-2018." Long John. –– D. Bethel's thoughts on the passing of Stan Lee. MEYERED IN CONTROVERSY: Richard Meyer and his "Diversity and Comics" YouTube Channel have been no stranger on this podcast with his leading the charge of the abhorrent ComicsGate dissention among comic book fandom. After gaining notoriety with his "Dark Roast" YouTube video (since deleted) that accused various popular industry creatives of committing sexual, devious, and illegal acts to get their way to the top, Mark Waid––among others––reached out to Antarctic Press to voice concerns with their decision to publish Meyer's comic, JAWBREAKERS. After hearing those concerns, Antarctic Press terminated their contract with Meyer and went to the internet to spew bile in response. At the end of September, Meyer sued Waid for "tortious interference with contract" and "defamation." D. Bethel and resident nerd lawyer, Andrew Asplund, dive back into this cesspool to navigate what exactly is going on throughout this new development. NOTE: No comment made by Andrew during this episode constitutes legal advice or establishes client-lawyer relations. TWILIGHT RETURNS: It was recently announced that the previously announced Jordan Peele-produced reboot of The Twilight Zone will actually star Mr. Peele himself as the host for the digital-only streaming service CBS All-Access. Andrew and D. talk about their excitement––and fears! (to make it spooky for Spookytober)––for the upcoming show. RELEVANT EPISODES: Shortcast 38 - Love is Made for Chicken Noodle: Where D. THE SIDE OF THE FAMILY WE DON'T TALK ABOUT: While D. Bethel and Andrew went into recording with the idea they'd do a Week in Geek episode, D.'s offering (Sarah Gadephe's Shy Boys: IRL documentary) got them off on a wildly different tangent that discusses nerds, politics, sex, and entitlement in the wake of the Toronto attack and this strange comic book controversy involving Antarctic Press and a comic made by a group of less-than-friendly creators. Sam Beck is certainly a comic artist to watch for these days, as her career coalesces to its first major apex. At the time of this episode, Songs for the Dead – the comic she draws for writers and past Speech Bubble guests Andrea Fort and Michael Christopher Heron – has just been picked up by publisher Vault Comics and is now available at comic shops everywhere. Her work is also featured in the 2018 edition of the Toronto Comics Anthology, Osgoode as Gold, she also contributed a story to the upcoming Wayward Sisters Anthology and that's just for starters. She also writes and draws her own fantasy webcomic called Verse and another project based on Greek mythology called Cadmus from Antarctic Press. On this episode, she talks about how role-playing games influence her comics work, what draws her to fantasy narratives in the first place and how Neopets – a place where users can own and raise virtual pets – fostered her creativity and storytelling abilities. On this episode of AGP, I welcome comic creator Dan Johnson to the show. Dan Johnson is a North Carolina native who knew he wanted to create comic books ever since he was seven years old. He began working in the industry by contributing articles to such comics-themed magazines as Alter Ego, Back Issue and Comic Book Marketplace (he has also contributed to such comics-themed and pop culture publications as Filmfax, Hogan's Alley, Monster Memories, Monster News and Scary Monsters Magazine). Danâ??s first graphic novel, Herc and Thor, was published by Antarctic Press in 2006. Shortly after the release of that book, he began writing for Campfire Graphic Novels. His books for that company include adaptations of Robinson Crusoe, Oliver Twist and The Jungle Book (which was nominated for a 2011 Comic Con India Award for Best Childrenâ??s Publication) and the original graphic novel, Sinbad: The Legacy. Dan is also a writer for the Dennis the Menace comic strip and he contributed four short stories to With Great Power, an anthology that centers around a copy of Amazing Fantasy #15 (which featured the origin and first appearance of The Amazing Spider-Man) as it passes from one owner to the next over the course of fifty years. He also served as the editor and head writer for the first issue of Cemetery Plots, a horror anthology from Empire Comics Lab. In late 2014, Dan began writing for Charlton Neo Media and he was named an assistant editor at the company. At this time, he is working on two original features for the company, Tokoda, a western with Kevin Halter and Barbara Kaalberg and Hip Hop, a funny animal series with Will Boyer. He is also preparing a reboot of the western feature, Gunmaster, for the company with Rodney Bennett. Johnson and Bennett are also currently working on a creator-owned series for Empire Comics Lab that is set to premiere in 2016. So please join us Tuesday night at 7pm EST as I sit down with Dan Johnson and discuss about his works in the industry.

In just a short 5 years, heâ??s colored just about 200 comics (which he will be celebrating this year), and still going. Heâ??s also an award winning colorist, winning the 2011 Shel Dorf Award for â??Colorist of the Yearâ?? and has been nominated a few times for an Eagle Award for â??Favorite Coloristâ??. Jeff created something called Sketch Coloringâ?¢. This is where you bring him anything b/w, and heâ??ll color it up by hand with markers right there on the spot. This is how he as a colorist, creates a sketch to make it a â??one of a kind, uniqueâ?? item for you. No two Sketch Coloringâ?¢ will ever be alike. You can give him anything from b/w sketch covers, b/w prints, clothing and pretty much anything markers will stick too and heâ??ll bring it to life just by adding markers to it.
