1991 studio album by Brooks & Dunn

We examine the song that introduced Brooks & Dunn to an unsuspecting country music world in 1991: their debut single "Brand New Man". In some sense, Kix & Ronnie were just continuing what George Strait, Randy Travis, and the famed Class of 1989 had already brought to the fore, but what is it about this high-octane Texas honky-tonker that yet felt like the ushering in of a new, or maybe a consummate, era of neotraditionalism?

We're Cheating On The Blues tonight with Brooks & Dunn's 1991 debut album Brand New Man! An introduction to your host. At the age of 54 I found a passion for songwriting and making music - some might say a bit late to the game but I now can't imagine a life without being creative in some way. One of the many hang-ups I have had to leave at the door is the constantly niggling self doubt, and inner voice telling me I'm too old to be having anything to do with music. I set out on my music journey heavily influenced by my favourite band of all time (Oasis) and in particular, the songwriting genius of Noel Gallagher, with the aim of experiencing for myself what it feels like to stand on stage in a live music venue, in a band, playing guitar and singing my own songs. I am very happy to say that I have ticked every box. In June 2018 I independently released my debut album 'Brand New Man'. In this first podcast I will take you through some of the album tracks, and explain the motivation to write the songs, and the individual stories behind them. Brooks & Dunn is an American country music duo consisting of Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn, both vocalists and songwriters. Founded in 1991, the duo signed to Arista Nashville that year. They have released 50 singles, of which 20 went to No. 1 on the Hot Country Songs charts and 19 more reached Top 10. Two of these No. 1 songs, "My Maria" (a cover of the B.W. Stevenson song) and "Ain't Nothing 'bout You", were the top country songs of 1996 and 2001, respectively, according to the Billboard Year-End charts. The latter is also the duo's longest-lasting No 1 single on that chart at six weeks. Several of their songs have also reached the Billboard Hot 100, with the No. 25 peaks of "Ain't Nothing 'bout You" and "Red Dirt Road" being their highest there. Brooks & Dunn also won the Country Music Association Vocal Duo of the Year award every year between 1992 and 2006, except for 2000. Two of their songs won the Grammy Award for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal: "Hard Workin' Man" in 1994 and "My Maria" in 1996. All but two of the duo's studio albums are certified platinum or higher by the Recording Industry Association of America; their highest-certified is their 1991 debut album, Brand New Man, which is certified sextuple-platinum for shipments of six million copies.
