If you're a fan of the podcast Song Exploder, and a whole lot of people are, you know that it's all about creativity. A musician walks the audience through the components of their song and the inspirations and decisions that went into forming those parts as they came together as a whole. Meanwhile, Hrishikesh Hirway, creator of the show, drops in separated tracks so you can follow the story. It's somewhat surprising then that Hrishi, a musician himself, was unable to write a song for years, even during the run of his show that so many other people find inspirational. Any idea he would get would be shot down by the negative voices in his brain, which told him that anything he made was bound to suck, that he had no business even attempting music. Finally, an invitation came from musician Jenny Owen Youngs to collaborate on a song for her podcast about Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The pressure was off and Jenny's belief in Hrishi's talent was enough to break through those horrible voices.Hrishikesh Hirway has a new single, Still Dreaming, out October 19th, and he's on tour with Jenny Owen Youngs. For music, tour dates, podcasts, and more information, visit Hrishikesh Hirway's website at hrishikesh.co. Jenny Owen Youngs is coping with life transitions by getting lost in a whole variety of worlds. Jenny Owen Youngs' most recent EP is It's Dangerous to Go Alone. She hosts the podcasts Buffering the Vampire Slayer and Veronica Mars Investigations. Here's some stuff we talked about: Our Feelings "That Josh Whedon stuff that went down" Tropes Vs. Women in Video Games Pac-Man is maybe the clearest metaphor for modern life as we know it Jenny is deep in The Witcher 3 When Jenny's brain won't shut up, Skyrim makes everything chill out "Our princess is in another castle!" That Super Mario Bros. movie where Mario is from Brooklyn Xalavier Nelson's episode from last season Dragonborn (ft. Jenny has chosen the 1997 sci-fi horror Cube (90 mins). Directed and co-written by Vincenzo Natali, the film stars Nicole de Boer, Nicky Guadagni, David Hewlett, Andrew Miller, and Maurice Dean Wint. Grab your stake and crucifix pendant, we're going vampire-hunting! Well, vampire-etymology-hunting. The podcast Buffering the Vampire Slayer, which recaps the TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode by episode, invited me to answer their listeners' questions of language that the show had provoked. Together with BVTS hosts Kristin Russo and Jenny Owen Youngs, I tackle the etymology of coven, vampire/vampyre, wigging out, the name Buffy and Bovril; as well as google as a verb, conlang on TV, and why Latin is so often the language of spells and spookiness. There are several swears in this episode. Find out more about this episode and some sources of the information therein at theallusionist.org/bufflusionist, where there's also a transcript. Why Not Both is an exploration of how our multiple passions shape our identity, hosted by musician and therapist Pam Shaffer and produced by writer and photographer Laura Studarus. For our fourth season, we partnered up with Under The Radar to explore the lives of musicians, writers, actors, and creatives. After the last fire season in LA, Jenny Owen Youngs saw the ashes on her car and decided that she had enough. After moving to Maine, she realized that the magic of her songwriting collaborations and her brilliant podcast Buffering The Vampire Slayer only grew stronger despite the distance as she was far more at ease. As a fellow lover of surprise moves and encounters, we loved her philosophy that life and art is all about intersections, where we happily collide with each other and leave one another forever changed as a result. Thanks again for listening! Make sure to subscribe, leave us a nice review, and hang out with us on Insta and Twitter. Join Josh and Leah as they struggle to remember this episode even moments after having watched it. Buffy's basement gets flooded this week - and that isn't even a euphemism. The Trio consisting of two people you have heard of and one you haven't begins a plan to take over Sunnydale. Willow gets a smackdown!Support the show (https://shop.spreadshirt.com/JandLWatches/)
Buffy is back, but so is some weird robed creature that looks like a bad guy in an Are you Afraid of the Dark episode. We use this as an excuse to make our characters do some spoopy stuff and generally this one is pretty weird. Josh and Leah talk resurrection and the efficacy of dry mouth treatments after fire breathing. Support the show (https://shop.spreadshirt.com/JandLWatches/)
Its the finale! Buffy jumps off a tower. Josh and Leah learn they starred in Orphan Black and Napoleon Dynamite. It has been a wild ride of a season! Spike also gets thrown off the tower and he does just fine, meanwhile the Demon lizard man dies. Whats that about?Next week we are watching Psycho Beach Party. Get Excited!Support the show (https://shop.spreadshirt.com/JandLWatches/)
For the last episode of our 2020 film mini-season, we welcome back Helen Zaltzman and Jenny Owen Youngs (of The Allusionist, Buffering The Vampire Slayer, and Veronica Mars Investigates) for a somewhat contentious discussion of this vampire-staple retelling. With some strong feelings and heavy levels of confusion, as well as a solo outing by Sam as guy-who-can-find-a-positive-in-almost-anything, Song by Song… well, we kind of get this one out of the way. Sorry to all the big fans, we did our best to find a balanced response, it just wasn't loved OK WHAT'S NEXT? Dawn decides to try her hand at a magic spell. Rather than start with something small, she begins with resurrecting the dead. It goes surprisingly well and the spell works - not before making Buffy cry, getting Spike bit on the side by a foam monster, and shaking hands with a man with strange pattern baldness. All this and more on this week's episode of J and L Watches!Support the show (https://shop.spreadshirt.com/JandLWatches/)

It's JustLeah's favorite episode! It is chock full of flashbacks, references, and very little Dawn! When Buffy gets a boo-boo while fighting a dirty hair metal vampire, she decides to split some wings with Spike and talk shop about his previous slayer kills. Jenny Owen Youngs! Jenny is an indie pop songwriter, queer icon and podcast host. I am thrilled to have her on Basic Folk! Her new EP, Night Shift, is out now (November 15) and we talk about it and all of her whole life in our conversation. From her young life in rural New Jersey to space camp (where she wished for more space and less camp) to coming out in a very public way in 2012. Jenny is a sweet, funny and caring person, and we really get into what makes her tick in this episode. Jenny's been on my radar since 2005 with her debut Batten The Hatches and she's released two full length albums since then and a handful of EPs. In recent years, Jenny's created this amazing community along with Kristin Russo with their podcast, "Buffering The Vampire Slayer," that goes through commentary about each episode of "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" and includes an original song by Jenny at the end of each podcast. Her other podcast, "Veronica Mars Investigations," is hosted by herself and Helen Zaltzman.

Podcaster, #1 hit songwriter, human and dog mother, gay icon Jenny Owen Youngs returns with her first full length album since 2012! In the last decade plus, Jenny has experienced a wild ride of changes like divorce, extreme grief, moving across the country, remarrying, etc. Her main project while not writing, recording and tour, she hosts podcasts like the very successful Buffering The Vampire Slayer alongside her ex-wife, Kristin Russo ("A Buffy The Vampire Slayer" rewatch pod, which is now an X-Files rewatch show called The Ex-Files). She also has songwriting credits for Panic! At the Disco, Pitbull, Ingrid Michaelson, and Brett Dennen thanks to her deal with Dan Wilson (Semisonic and epic co-writer) and his publishing company.JOY's new album Avalanche covers a lot of hard topics (see earlier: divorce, grief, moving, remarrying) and was produced by angel human Josh Kaufman (Taylor Swift, The National, The Hold Steady, Josh Ritter, and so on...). Jenny has always been an artist who is not afraid to show her whole self: good and the bad. Case in point: She described the inspiration for her very first break-through song "Fuck Was I" as "horrible, horrible, horrible decision making," adding it was "just your classic love gone wrong hell." Never one to back down from a fight, Jenny's approaching these songs with honesty, bravery and her biting sense of humor. It's cliche to say that talking to Jenny is a JOY, but it's a cliche for a reason.
