Wendy Shew, a San Francisco native with immigrant parents from China, is the founder and Executive Director of the international non-profit organization Building Education (BE). The loss of Wendy's mother early in life motivated her 25-year journey in social impact work. After an early career in aviation, she embarked on a six-year global journey where she taught in rural Thailand and mentored girls in India. Wendy founded BE in 2017 to aid earthquake-affected schools in Nepal, rebuilding four schools and supporting over 600 students. BE has also brought water systems and energy to impoverished communities, initiated a hydroponics project, and aims to uplift rural villages in collaboration with local partners. Aside from her philanthropic work, Wendy is an ultramarathon runner, mountain trekker, fashion enthusiast, and model. Her lifelong inspiration is her father, whose resilience in the face of single parenthood taught Wendy grace, courage, and a strong work ethic. In today's episode of If Not Now Wen, we're excited to talk with special guest Wendy Shew. As a first generation Asian American, Wendy experienced firsthand how education can ultimately become the equalizer in anyone's life. At an early age, she experienced the tragedy of losing her mother, which has become her catalyst for 25 years in social impact work. Determined to break through gender barriers, Wendy studied aviation, learned to fly single engine prop planes, and worked in the international aviation business as a jet engine specialist. After volunteering in 2014 at a girl's orphanage in India, she quit her job four months later and sold all her things. She left the country to travel the world all across Asia, Europe, and Africa for six years, where she spent much of her time as a volunteer and mentor to young girls. Three months after an earthquake hit Nepal in 2015, damaging 9,000 schools, Wendy traveled to Nepal to support in earthquake disaster relief. From there, she founded Building Education in 2017 with the vision to help others transform tragedy to purpose in rising out of poverty. Wendy truly embodies what it means to become the change you want to see in this world, and she has such a beautiful journey to share with us today. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. We talk about:

When it comes to children's education, parents know best, Laura Zorc says. As the mother of four kids herself, Zorc has been fighting for education reform since 2013, when her home state of Florida began adopting Common Core education goals. She successfully rallied a group of parents to stand against the federally funded learning standards. Now, she is training parents across the nation to be advocates for their own children in the classroom.“Just because we send our kids to these government public schools, that does not mean the moment they walk through those front doors that we hand over our rights as parents,” Zorc says. Zorc is the founder of Building Education for Students Together (BEST), an organization that equips parents to run for school board and stand against the far-left policies infiltrating classrooms across America. She joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the importance of parental involvement in the field of education and how parents can begin utilizing the resources offer by BEST, a project of FreedomWorks. We also cover these stories:Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., announces he plans on forcing a vote to change rules regarding the filibuster.Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican, calls on the Biden administration to distribute monoclonal antibodies for the treatment of COVID-19.Sen. Primer cofounders Ryan Delk & Maksim Stepanenko join the Deep End after meeting through On Deck. They are currently building a community for curious and ambitious kids to find and explore their interests together.Education is deeply personal, and so our conversation begins on a personal note, with a discussion of Ryan's background growing up homeschooled & Maksim's experience with highly structured curriculum back home in Kyrgyzstan. Both of them look back on their own learning experience and lament an education system designed with the assumption that all children should move at the same pace. Kids' talents & interests vary wildly. Ryan and Maksim came to the realization with Primer that they could build educational treadmills for kids to run as fast or as slow as they would like towards their particular interests. Our conversation centers on how to augment the education system to create more Michaelangelos and Albert Einsteins. How might we enable self-guided homeschooling without total involvement from parents? How can we leverage the dynamics of popularity to make learning cool? The kids that Ryan & Maksim are working with so far are incredible. They have a huge sense of ownership of their online community and are naturally creating governance protocols that limit toxicity and bullying. They're making friends and collaborating on projects, all while learning at a clip that outpaces traditional K-12 school. For full show notes, links, RSVPs to live podcast recordings and more, visit thedeepend.substack.com

Alyson Laura is an all-around Sustainability Maven, who seeks to evolve human success and planetary delight. She is currently the Director of Education for GBES. Her responsibilities include ensuring the highest quality product in their study materials, developing new on-demand webinar content, and staying updated on the latest green building trends and certifications. "Think bigger. Don't just get stuck at what other people are doing or what seems to work, challenge yourself to really push that envelope and dream big." - Alyson Laura She was also a Sustainability Consultant for SIG prior to joining GBES. And, she taught in-person exam prep classes all over the United States. Coming from an architectural background, she became captivated by the triple bottom line of the green building movement. She worked as a LEED Reviewer for one of USGBC's veteran review firms, has reviewed hundreds of LEED certification applications, and has worked on dozens of successful LEED Consulting projects. Influence in Sustainability Alyson grew up in Florida, which gave her an advantage in sustainability. The place valued recycling, composting, and rain water catching. There was a lot of support. They were so close to sea level, and so placed a high priority on conserving their environment. Her father was also a civil engineer who worked on conserving the Everglades. Into the Green Building Movement With the rise of technology in the early 2000s, she initially applied to Georgia Tech as a Computer Science major. But she changed her major into Architecture. During which, she was able to spend her entire senior year abroad in Paris, France. "A big part of my education was being on a bicycle in the major city of Paris, seeing recycling bins on the public sidewalks -- just really living and breathing what it means to be in a connected society." - Alyson Laura When she returned home in Atlanta, she challenged herself to live car-free and take advantage of the transits and bicycles. Specializing in LEED It was not easy for Alyson to break into the field of sustainability. There wasn't always a clear path for her to get to where she wanted. She first heard about LEED while working at an architectural firm. "These are the buildings I wanted to be a part of. This is what I want to attach my name to." - Alyson Laura It was the perfect marriage for her and her career. It allowed her to utilize her architectural education and background and to drive towards those that mattered most to her. Her first role in the industry was that of a LEED reviewer.
