Embark on a revelatory journey with us as social entrepreneur Robert Hawkins joins the conversation to unravel the concealed practice of shadow banning. Together, we dissect how this form of censorship, often invisible to its victims, is molding our digital conversations and potentially narrowing the worldviews we're exposed to online. Our dialogue takes you behind the veil of online moderation, laying bare the silent war waged on free expression, and the resultant echo chambers that both left and right can find themselves trapped within.Wrestling with the complexities of the First Amendment in the realm of omnipotent social platforms, this episode probes the fine line between the right to speak and the power to silence. We confront the perplexing legal landscape that governs digital communication, pondering whether private entities have the right to exclude voices and how this shapes our online milieu. The finale of our exploration serves as a warning, highlighting the subtle yet profound impacts of shadow banning on community dialogue and the uphill battle content moderators face in their quest to curate the online space. We leave you not just with a deeper understanding but with practical insights on how to spot and challenge the silent mechanisms that could be shaping your digital experience. Discussing the Most Common and Challenging EdTech Questions for 2023

World Bank EduTech Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 17, 2023 44:04

As we enter a new year, our EdTech team has been discussing what we think will be some of the most common and challenging questions for 2023. Today, our team - Robert Hawkins, Alex Twinomugisha, Cristobal Cobo, and Maria Barron - explores five questions for 2023: What skills do youth need for employment and what role does technology play to accelerate development of these skills? A few anticipated areas of engagement include use of existing competency frameworks and relevance to developing country needs; related teacher digital skills to support student learning; measurement of skills and potential for micro credentials; verified credentials on the blockchain; and the role of AR/VR for development of technical skills in TVET. How will AI impact education? Areas that countries have started to explore include predictive analytics and early warning systems for identifying drop out risks; adaptive learning to bring students up to grade level and support teaching at the right level; rapid assessments for instance to provide automated feedback on writing skills; and intelligent tutors. Additionally, we anticipate new questions on how teachers can integrate AI in the classroom and policies for new tools like chat GPT (see one teacher's policy in additional resources below) and how text to image tools could democratize content creation. What technologies are most appropriate and sustainable in fragile and conflict countries? Increasingly countries explore how technology can support more resilient systems to reach students who can't reach schools. Countries such as Ukraine, Afghanistan, and Somalia are exploring appropriate low-cost options such as nudges through mobile devices and off-line access to content to support students in these emergency conditions. A spectrum of solutions will need further exploration to take into account low connectivity, limited access to devices, and nascent digital skills. What does hybrid learning mean and what is the most effective balance of virtual and face-to-face engagement to accelerate learning? As countries seek to leverage investments from COVID, they are exploring the lessons from the pandemic to evaluate the role of technology to create more resilient and continuous education delivery systems. A critical objective is to leverage technology both in and out of the classroom to reach out of school youth, build resilience for future shocks and accelerate learning through increasing access to sources of learning. Questions around appropriate technology for students of various ages and in what quantity and frequency will continue to be explored and debated in the coming year. Also, effective use of technology for inclusion as well as debates on costs and benefits on climate impact including curricular changes to empower youth to understand and begin to address the climate global grand challenge will emerge as critical questions. How should education systems sustainably finance and procure EdTech? What are the priority investments to most effectively use EdTech and how can Ministries of Education identify the resources to procure and sustain EdTech investments? What are the most effective private-public partnership models? What are the costs and benefits and how should these be measured in a world of evolving demand for skills and competencies? With 96% of World Bank projects including financing for EdTech components, this will be a critical question for the coming year.

Many countries face several challenges when trying to select, design, adapt, and customize a learning management system (LMS) that meets the particular needs of their education system: finding a scalable, flexible and robust platform; ensuring the interoperability and integration with existing solutions; planning the sustainability over time, and facilitating local ownership are just some of them. Today, you're listening to a conversation with the ProFuturo (https://profuturo.education/en) team (a digital educational program launched by Telefónica Foundation and "la Caixa" Foundation, present in 40 countries) about ProFuturo's journey and how it mirrors what ministries of education are doing in terms of developing a learning management system for remote and blended learning. Born of Jewish descent in Warsaw, Poland in 1879, Wanda Landowska would go on to achieve an impressive career as a keyboardist, specializing in the works of Johann Sebastian Bach and other composers from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. What is perhaps most remarkable about her career is that not only was she a performer of the highest rank – and one for whom her on-stage manner was known to have great individuality, charm and intimacy – but also she was extremely well-read, particularly in the area of musicology. Landowska’s vast writings, collected in the present volume – published five years after her death by her student and domestic partner, Denise Restout – represent discussions about many aspects pertaining to musical performance and interpretation. Regarded for her revival of the harpsichord, Landowska was a student of Jan Kleczynski and Alexander Michalowski, both of which were authorities on the music of Frédéric Chopin. Additional studies in counterpoint and composition were taken with Heinrich Urban in Berlin. Landowska also studied with Moritz Moszkowski. Following an elopement to Paris in 1900, with Henry Lew (who later died in a car accident following the First World War) Landowska began to give harpsichord performances, her famous Pleyel harpsichord having not been completed until 1912. This period saw concert tours throughout Europe. Also at this time, her essays began to be published. During the first decade of the twentieth century, Landowska taught at the Schola Cantorum in Paris and, a few years later, from 1912-19, at the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin. Following her American debut in 1923, she taught for several years in Philadelphia at the Curtis Institute. By 1925, Landowska had established the École de Musique Ancienne in Paris and, by 1927, her famous home in Saint-Leu-la-Forêt, which would become a center for the performance and study of old music. She held residence there thru 1940, during which time she often attended – both as guest and performer – the famous salons of Natalie Clifford Barney. Becoming a naturalized French citizen in 1938, Landowska was the first person to record, at the harpsichord, the Goldberg Variations of J. S. Bach. The years of the Second World War were hard on Landowska, her home in Saint-Leu having been looted. Priceless instruments and manuscripts were stolen. Having fled Europe for the USA with Denise Restout, the two arrived in New York on December 7, 1941, the date of the attack on Pearl Harbour. The two eventually settled in Lakeville, Connecticut, in a peaceful home where Landowska continued performing and teaching. Landowska gave her final public performance in 1954. That same year saw the issuing of her recording of The Well-Tempered Clavier by J. S. Bach. Though not limited to the harpsichord (Landowska performed frequently at the piano), the instrument was, however, her primary vehicle of expression and she achieved success in conveying to contemporary composers, the reasons they ought to write for the instrument. Both Manuel de Falla and Francis Poulenc composed for her, works for harpsichord. While the selections presented here represent a small sampling of the artist’s work, it is worth noting that the lives with whom Landowska came into contact during her life, included the likes of Louis Diémer, Gabriel Fauré, Serge Koussevitzky, Pierre Monteux, Arthur Nikisch, Ignacy Jan Paderewski, Camille Saint-Saëns, Albert Schweitzer, Leopold Stokowski, Igor Stravinsky, Leo Tolstoy and many others. Landowska passed away in 1959 in Lakeville, Connecticut, at the age of eighty. ---------- PayPal.me/pennypiano Support for this podcast is greatly appreciated!

Ted Bird has been a Montreal radio mainstay since 1984. I'd say longer but I don't remember his fist tour in 1979 and he didn't have fond memories of that era which was complicated given the politics at the time. From his times working with Terry Dimonte at CHOM, Mix 96 and CJAD, to working off the island in the Mohawk community and now Jewel 106.7 in Hudson, Quebec.I worked with Ted a couple of times, including from 2002 to 2006 at CHOM where his passion for reporting, writing and broadcasting taught me to stand your ground while having all your i's dotted and t's crossed. Yes this will be as biographical as it is two radio people catching up as we touched on subjects like his support of the military troops, the legalization of cannabis, the Habs, Expos, NY Giants, and concussions in football. The Robert Hawkins bit Ted referred to is here. There's more about this episode on our show page! Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteMatt Fogarty VoiceoversJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxNLogic

The ArtistRobert Hawkins spent most of his life pursuing music. Now, his joy comes from serving the Lord in any and every capacity of life. He is steadfast and sold out to God and his eyes are focused on ministry and fulfilling His purpose. Hawkins dream is to produce music which ministers to the heart of God and touches the heart of people. Not what's popular, but what delivers, what heals, what restores, music that God inhabits.Born April 3rd, 1982 in Chicago, IL and moved to Kalamazoo, MI at the age of eight. Hawkins grew up singing and directing the choir at his local church; “Church of the Living God”. In the year of 2001, Hawkins perused his music career and started a Gospel group called “Unified Praise”, where they traveled across the country spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ through song. With an audacious mindset and passion for Music Ministry, in 2004 “Robert Hawkins and Unified Praise” accomplished their debut live recording in Kalamazoo, MI. Shortly after, Robert and Unified Praise was privileged to share the stage with some of the top Gospel Artist such as, Tye Tribbett, Ki Ki Sheard, and Rance Allen, just to name a few. In addition, made an appearance on Dr. Bobby Jones Gospel Impact Network. Later, Hawkins accepted an invitation to travel and perform background vocals for various Gospel Artist: Leandria Johnson, Ashford Sandars, Jonathan Dunn, Joshua Rogers, and Jon Plair just to name a few. As he continued serving in the background God has opened many doors on his behalf allowing him to minister in song at churches worldwide. Hawkins has made appearances on BET's Bobby Jones Gospel, TBN “Praise the Lord”, Bishop Bloomer and The Lexi show on “The Word Network”.This Chicago native with a diverse and pristine vocal style took another step forward, co-produced and released his debut single “Happy” on his Birthday April 3rd 2016 produced by Reginald Strong Jr. Robert is truly grateful and appreciative of this opportunity in comparison of his first recording in 2004 that wasn't successful. Robert Says “This song “Happy” means something new now because of the struggles, pain, and adversity I faced for 12 long years and God suddenly made provisions for me to record and release this song. I truly have several reasons to be “Happy”.His vocal aptitude is evident. “I'm inspired to perform when times are rough, whether it's from my own life experiences or someone else's. “In these moments, I love to minister because it's an outlet and source for leaving an everlasting impression to hurting people like myself. One thing that Robert Hawkins desires, is to keep the message of Christ on display more than the brand of the artist. “Without God, we can't do anything.

Robert Hawkins is not only one of the funniest human beings alive he is also one of my dearest best friends. Robert is of those rarest creatures in that he is almost as funny off stage as he is onstage. I first meet Robert in the early 1990s when we were both playing at the River Center comedy club together in San Antonio, Texas. Robert was the MC, I was the middle act and Nick DiPalo was the headliner, what a show!    Robert is originally from Hollywood, Florida. I always love to say to him "You are so Hollywood... Florida." Because we both grew up in Florida we can always laugh about the unique and disturbing ridiculousness of our home state.   He didn't start doing stand until he got out of the army in Texas so Texas is also a major factor in his life as is San Francisco as he and I both lived there at the same time.    Career highlights aside from Conan appearances include being a writer for Christopher Titus' sitcom and for many years now he has been the opening act for Ron White. For me Robert will always be significant because he never fails to make me laugh and he has been a friend to me through thick and thin never once leaving me hanging if I were having troubles.    Robert and Dan Gabriel were the ones who introduced me to Bikram Yoga in 2004 and we compare notes on that practice and talk about it at great length in this episode. "The best thing about Bikram Yoga is quieting your mind." In this conversation Robert and I talk about the Ice Cream Truck business we thought of starting, why should should pick your favorite team in the playoffs, the gold fish project of Amsterdam, family discounts in Thailand, why you should never have sex with a comedy club waitress on the first night of the week, why you should write and try out two jokes a day minimum and the most brilliant invention of all 'The Smoothie Phone.'   He is one of my favorite living human beings walking the earth today and it is my pleasure to present to you now the one and only Robert Hawkins!   Intro song: Cutting Room (Hot Pants) – Oceanliners   Stand-up clip 1: Compilation of ‘Quitting Smoking’, ‘In The Army’ and YouTube clip ‘Gay Pride Parades - Robert Hawkins’.   Stand-up clip from YouTube 2: Ron White's Comedy Salute to the Troops Robert Hawkins   Audio Cameo: Standing Bow Posture (Bikram Yoga)   Stand-up clip 3: ‘Write Home’   End song:  Wanted: Lover (No Experience Necessary) – James Govan     Recorded in Dallas, Texas.
