BlazeTV host Pat Gray and Claremont Lincoln University fellow Inez Stepman join the show today to discuss a groundbreaking decision by the U.S. Supreme Court. A majority of justices ruled that race-based admissions practices at Harvard University and the University of North Carolina are in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act and the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment. This ruling marks a significant turning point in the ongoing debate surrounding affirmative action in higher education. We will delve into the details of this historic judgment and its potential implications for future admissions policies. A Tennessee federal judge partially blocked a law intended to shield children from life-altering transgender procedures, following other federal judges who blocked similar protective laws in other states. During a speech in Maryland, President Biden revealed that he personally does not support abortion and expressed discomfort with the procedure. In a recent development, a manslaughter case against Jordan Williams, who was charged with stabbing Devictor Ouedraogo to death on a Brooklyn J train, has been dismissed. She has 25+ years of leadership experience and she's a Master Corporate Executive Coach, Facilitator, and a trusted advisor to the companies she works with. She has held executive roles in government affairs and human resources. Phyllis worked with the energy industry for almost 20 years, and 10 years of that was as a regulatory lobbyist. Before founding the Sarkaria Group, a leadership consulting group, Phyllis served as an internal advisor to C-Level Executives at Quidel Corporation. She was responsible for the Company's global HR strategy for over a dozen years. She also teaches Ethics and HR analytics in the Organizational Leadership Master's Program and the Human Resources Master's Program at Claremont Lincoln University and she is a member of the faculty for C.B. Bowman's Workplace Equity and Equality program. Phyllis has an MBA from Texas Tech University and an MA in Ethical Leadership at Claremont Lincoln University. She has numerous coaching certifications, and she's also in the process of publishing her book called “Map: A Field-Guide For Your Leadership Journey”.    In this episode, Jordan and Phyllis discuss: Working in government affairs and recognizing the opportunity to lead and influence How your cultural background influences how you are perceived  How a woman can gain influence in a predominantly male environment Common struggles in executives and the ROI for listening and caring Key Takeaways When you do the right things with people and remove the boundaries and hurdles, people can be productive and great things can happen in the organization.  Challenge yourself to think about what the pain points are for the people you're trying to influence. You have to know how your suggestion or your idea is going to impact what keeps people up at night.  Your tone of voice, confidence and assertiveness is just as important as the words you're trying to get across.  You have to find new avenues and tools for growth - holding on to what got you to where you are might prevent you from ever going further. “Many times we have great ideas and we want to pursue those… but if it's not addressing pain points for someone at a higher level, then they're likely to see it as vitamins rather than a painkiller. Those are not necessarily seen as adding the greatest value in the organization. ” —  Phyllis Sarkaria   Get the complimentary guide: How To Select An Executive Coach at www.selectcoach.workplacewarrior.com    Get the Am I Abrasive Self Test at abrasive.workplacewarrior.com    Connect with Phyllis Sarkaria:   Website: http://www.sarkariagroup.com/  LinkedIn:  https://www.linkedin.com/in/phyllis-sarkaria/  Twitter: https://twitter.com/PhyllisSarkaria    Connect with Jordan:  Get the complimentary guide: How To Select An Executive Coach at www.selectcoach.workplacewarrior.com  Get the Am I Abrasive Self Test at abrasive.workplacewarrior.com    Website: www.workplacewarriorinc.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/jordangoldrich1 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jordan.goldrich Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jordangoldrich/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jgoldrich/

And with a few Article 15s for insubordination on his record, Shabazz, a field artilleryman at the time, wanted out of the military. Then, one day while training out in the field, an Army chaplain approached him and struck up a conversation. “Honestly, it was like a revelation from God,” Shabazz said. “When it hit my ears, I knew that was what I was going to do in life. It was incredible.” “I didn’t want to convert; I was happy where I was,” he said. “I’m a very inquisitive person. If I don’t know something, I’m going to get to know it.” While Shabazz found more peace and solace by switching faiths, which included the Islamic custom of changing his name, many people in his life stopped talking to him. His commander at the time, Shabazz said, even asked why he sided with the enemy. “I was so hurt by those statements,” he said. He eventually came to realize it was a lack of understanding some people had with Islam, which he was also guilty of until he studied it. Islam is sometimes distorted by extremist groups, he said, similar to how other religions can be twisted to incite violent acts. “Whether it’s the Bible, Quran, or the Torah, I want people to understand that religion really has nothing to do with violence,” he said. “99.9 percent of the people in religion are good people.” Chaplain Shabazz holds two doctorate degrees on top of four master’s degrees. He has written three books and teaches online courses at four colleges. He has 28 years of experience as a U.S. Army officer working at the highest level and is currently a fellow at the University of Texas studying senior-level strategy. I view myself as a competent, consistent, compassionate self-starter willing to tackle new challenges. If you are seeking an Instructor who is loyal and committed to achieving total success for your students and the university, please consider what I have to offer. In Linda's book Pure: Inside the Evangelical Movement that Shamed a Generation of Young Women and How I Broke Free, she discusses what it was like as an Evangelical girl growing up in purity culture and the effect it had on her sexuality. The book also highlights the countless other women who she interviewed nationwide on the same topic. Whenever I do workshops within a church community, I recommend this excellent book which mirrors so many stories of women who grew up in religious communities in the 90s. In this podcast, we discuss her work as the founder and president of the nonprofit, Break Free Together and her work as a personal coach dedicated to helping people release shame and claim their whole selves.  She is changing lives and I am so happy to have spent our time together.   Linda's work was born out of her 15 years of research on religious trauma around sex and gender, documented in her award-winning book. Linda's work has been featured by CBS, NBC, NPR (her interview with Fresh Air's Terry Gross having been named one of the top ten of the year), and over 150 other outlets, and she has been highlighted on the TEDx stage, and at The Apollo's Women of the World Festival, the 92Y SHE Summit, and over 100 other venues.   Linda is also teaching faculty at Claremont Lincoln University and consults with organizations and individuals committed to doing good. Previously, she was the founding director of Echoing Green's multi-award-winning Work on Purpose program. The program's leadership development curriculum on how to find and follow your purpose was adopted by over 200 colleges/universities, nonprofits and corporations and has impacted tens of thousands of emerging professionals. Prior to this, she led Moving Millions, propelling what was then a $181-million campaign for large-scale investment in women and girls into the global community of 100+ donor-activists committed that it is today, and held other roles within academia and the women's funding movement.   Linda has contributed to several publications, and authored two successful curricula and training programs. She was awarded the NYU Reynolds Fellowship in Social Entrepreneurship for her work on religiously-rooted sexual shame in 2006. She later became a judge for the Forbes 30 Under 30 faith-based initiative, and the Echoing Green, AshokaU, and NYU Reynolds social entrepreneurship fellowship competitions. She is chair of the Board for the Forum for Theological Exploration board, and sits on the advisory boards of Feminist.com's Our Inner Lives initiative and New York University's Of Many Institute for Multifaith Leadership.   Linda holds an interdisciplinary Masters degree in gender studies, religious studies, oral history, nonfiction writing, and art as social change from NYU and is a trained Our Whole Lives (OWL) sexuality education facilitator. A Midwesterner at heart, Linda lives in New York City with her family. She is the wife of a writer and social change agent who inspires her every day, and the “bonus mom” to a very cool teenager.   Learn more about Linda at Break Free Together and follow her on Instagram.

Decolonizing America: Nick Tilsen

Future Hindsight

Self-Determination Self-determination empowers those who are most affected to be in the driver’s seat of policy-making decisions. For example, if an oil company wants to run a pipeline through Indigenous land, Indigenous communities themselves would decide based on their values and the impact on their families, water, air, and land. NDN collective works to restore self-determination through three pillars: defense, development, and decolonization. Decolonization European colonization was a system of white supremacy that annihilated complex Indigenous populations, cultures, languages, beliefs, land, and governing systems. The work of decolonization includes dismantling white supremacist systems of economic extraction and governance; education about the totality of colonial history; and the revitalization of Native languages and ways of being. Reclaiming Indigenous heritage is also an act of healing past traumas from colonization. Land Back A key tenet of self-determination and decolonization is the “land back” movement. Theft of Indigenous lands was one of the fundamental ways Europeans colonized America. Stealing land and extracting its resources decimated both the land and the people who lived on it. The land back movement aims to right this wrong by returning public lands, like National Parks and National Forests, to the care of Indigenous People. Land back does not mean removing Americans from their homes. Instead, it means returning the land to Native stewardship focusing on preservation and rejuvenation. Find out more: Nick Tilsen is the President & CEO of NDN Collective, and a citizen of the Oglala Lakota Nation. Tilsen has over 18 years of experience building place-based innovations that have the ability to inform systems change solutions around climate resiliency, sustainable housing, and equitable community development. He founded NDN Collective to scale these place-based solutions while building needed philanthropic, social impact investment, capacity and advocacy infrastructure geared towards building the collective power of Indigenous Peoples. For many of us raised in the Evangelical tradition, we're familiar with what the term "purity culture" means on the surface: teaching children to save their first time having sex until they're married to that one person with whom God had always intended them to be. However, as time went by and the scars began to manifest, we realized what it entailed deeper down: sexual shame, sexual silence, and social and structural hierarchies that overwhelmingly subjugated and victimized young women. In her book, Pure: Inside the Evangelical Movement that Shamed a Generation of Young Women and How I Broke Free, Linda Kay Klein interviewed a number of women over a 12-year period who were raised in the purity culture movement to get intimate perspectives on the environments that foster it, the damage that comes from it, and ultimately, the healing that can begin when separating from it. Interviewers: Jim Rohner and Jonathan Williams ABOUT LINDA KAY KLEIN Linda Kay Klein is an author, speaker, teaching faculty at Claremont Lincoln University and the President and Founder of Break Free Together, a not-for-profit that uses story exchange to help people release shame and claim their whole selves. Raised in purity culture, she's made it her mission to coach and consult with both people who experience the PTSD-like symptoms that have arisen from purity culture and organizations who are striving to establish a greater good.

#30. December 5, 2019. Dr. Philip Clayton is my next special guest. Philip and I discuss the concept of an ecological civilization. He and I have recently returned from Seoul, Korea where we were the guests of Seoul's Mayor Park Won-Soon presenting at a major conference to discuss how Korea might adopt the concept of an 'ecological civilization' which Philip along with John Cobb Jr. and others have been instrumental in advancing in China. Philip holds the Ingraham Chair at Claremont School of Theology and directs the Comparative Theologies PhD program. A graduate of Yale University, he has taught at Williams College and the California State University, as well as holding guest professorships at the University of Munich, the University of Cambridge, and Harvard University. His leadership roles in theological education over the last 15 years include serving as the immediate past dean of CST, obtaining funding for and launching the CST online program, and leading a Ford-sponsored program on “Rekindling Theological Imagination” and a Carpenter-sponsored program on “Reimagining Theological Education.” Clayton has been a leader in interreligious education and dialogue for more than two decades. He helped launch an early collaboration of Jewish, Muslim, and Christian scientists, expanding it into a global, seven-year program; organized conferences at Harvard on Judaism, Buddhism, and science; and has participated in programs on Islam and science and on Abrahamic partnerships in the Philippines, Indonesia, France, Turkey, Qatar, and the UAE. Currently he is working to organize the Justice track for the upcoming Parliament of the World Religions. Philip Clayton played a major role in conceiving and founding a multi-faith university, Claremont Lincoln University, serving as its first provost and Executive Vice President. He worked with religious leaders to set up administrative structures and to work toward accreditation for Bayan Claremont, a Muslim graduate school, as well as expanding the university's programs to include the Dharma traditions of India and the religious traditions of Southeast Asia. Clayton has authored or edited 24 books and published some 300 articles. Dr. Clayton lectures widely, works with various religious and environmental organizations, and supports constructive partnerships across the world's religious traditions. He is currently the president of EcoCiv.org, which works to lay the foundations for an ecological civilization, and a Chinese environmental organization, the Institute for the Postmodern Development of China, as well as serving on a variety of boards. Philip is married to Judy Kingsley, a teacher and educational administrator, and father to their twins Adrian and Shawn. Listen as they discuss what the project is about & why it is needed, and marvel as Bo channels his inner preacher by conducting a “mock interview” with Kile, who demonstrates what it is like to be an atheist in church. From Kile's website: Interview an Atheist at Church Day is a project created by Kile Jones, a Ph.D student at Claremont Lincoln University, an inter-religious school to train ministers. Kile is an atheist who is interested in helping liberal religious people work together with unbelieving communities for the betterment of society. Interview an Atheist at Church Day is a community project aimed at bettering the under-standing between atheists and religious persons. We hope to connect atheists who are willing to be interviewed with congregations in their area that are interested in developing ties with atheists in their area. The “day” represents our desire to grow into something far-reaching and beneficial to atheists and churchgoers alike. As unbelieving populations around the world continue to rise, dialogue and understanding between atheists and people of faith is more important than ever. We live and work in the same world: understanding better what both unites and divides religious and non-religious people can only help us make this world a better place.
