Rail fare hikes: How much will you have to pay?

Rail passengers on commuter routes into London could face hefty fare increases in the new year forecast to add hundreds of pounds to season tickets even while inflation is falling. It comes amid growing passenger criticism of services often hobbled by strikes, delays, cancellations and timetable cutbacks.Yearly national rail ticket price rises are normally closely linked to Retail Price Index inflation, as measured the previous July. But last year as inflation soared, ministers ditched the RPI formula - plus or minus one per cent - to avoid a massive 12.3 per cent increase.Instead, they pegged that fare rise to average earnings growth and came up with a ticket hike figure of 5.9 per cent, delayed from January until March. At the time, the Government insisted the new method of calculation was “for this year only” - and now faces a similar dilemma, with the RPI in June at 10.7 per cent, which has since fallen slightly. The Department for Transport says ministers seek to “strike a balance between supporting mainline passengers and keeping our railways running”, however officials are still weighing up how to levy the new year fare hikes. The Leader podcast's joined by Christian Wolmar, transport journalist and presenter of the Calling All Stations podcast, who's written an analysis on the subject for Thursday's Evening Standard. So, is it still possible to find commuter season ticket bargains? On episode 19 of Past Prime, Steve and Matty bravely slog their way through "Calling All Stations," the fifteenth studio album from Prog Rock turned Stadium Pop legends, Genesis, and one of the most infamously awful last gasps in the history of Rock and Roll. In 1986, a decade after Peter Gabriel left them behind, Phil, Tony & Mike reached the top of the charts with "Invisible Touch." But one decade later, with Phil Sussudio-ing his way around the world as a solo act, Tony and Mike were left searching for a new lead singer. They found their hot, new guy in twenty-eight year old, Scotsman Ray Wilson, who was asked to make tedious middle-aged ennui sound young and exciting. Very few people in the world have ever listened to "Calling All Stations" all the way through. Those who did either blocked it our who or came to seriously regret it. For Steve, who went deep into the abyss, this pod was a chance to share his profound knowledge and personal torment with a friend. For Matty, it represented an opportunity to delve into Steve's curious, youthful fascination with early, proggy Genesis and to test out his theory that Prog Rock, in general, and early Genesis, in particular, is music for cult leaders. In this episode, I reached out to prog rock musician Dave Kerzner, who has worked with virtually everyone at some point, to discuss his projects and his favorite Genesis record. He chose the 1974 classic double concept album, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. Dave was the perfect person to talk about Genesis with (in general) and specifically about The Lamb. He's played that piece live for a special 20th anniversary performance at ProgFest '94 with Kevin Gilbert and Nick D'Virgilio — who went on to release his own Lamb tribute under the name Rewiring Genesis, and he played drums for Genesis on the Calling All Stations album. "Squids" Kerzner is working on his own Lamb tribute album with Francis Dunner of It Bites (among others), played in Sound of Contact with Phil Collins' son Simon, recently bought a bunch of Tony Banks' keyboard equipment, and has worked with Steve Hackett and famed Genesis producer Nick Davis. There's more, but I'll leave his credentials there for now. Dave and I walked through the album and he dropped in interesting anecdotes along the way. It was a lot of fun. I hope you enjoy revisiting The Lamb with us and perhaps learning more about Kerzner's work.  Learn more about Dave's music here. I appreciate you listening! Episode 75 – Genesis Part 15, Calling All Stations On this episode Ken, Paul and Joe tackle the “other bookend” album. Is it different? Certainly. Is it too slow? Perhaps. That being said there is lively discussion on the merits and limitations of this album. Ray Wilson gets serious respect from the panel for his performance and the general consensus is that we wish this incarnation would have had another chance to see what they could do. In 1996, all that remained of 80s pop-rock behemoth Genesis was founding members Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford. The multi-platinum powerhouse that was frontman Phil Collins had left the band to pursue other projects, leaving the band in the same position it was left in when previous frontman Peter Gabriel jumped ship in the 1970s. Rather than take this as an opportunity to finally lay Genesis to rest, Banks and Rutherford regrouped with Stiltskin vocalist Ray Wilson and a crew of session musicians to go darker, with the 1997's Calling All Stations. Critics hated it, the general public was uninterested enough for the band to cancel a planned American tour around it, and it ultimately led to Genesis' disbanding. Was Calling All Stations truly "a formless blob of synth sounds"? Did Ray Wilson truly have "no confidence or personality"? That's what the goodboix Lee and Pat hope to figure out on this latest episode of Jukebox Zeroes. Join them on a journey full of post-grunge yarling, outdated synthesizers, and a clumsy Halloween tie-in. Featuring expired ham, drunk uncles, and the ukulele stylings of Softshoe Magoo. This Month's Local Artist Feature: "Timebear" by Titans Of Industry
