With the current console generation finally getting its engine properly warmed up, we couldn't help but stand back and realise that – damn, the PS5 and Xbox Series machines are over three years old already! Last generation, following the same timeframe, the PS4 Pro was out already! So, yeah… things feel like they're moving slowly, so we decided to look back and see if a sense of technical leaps used to be more frequent or not (spoiler: they were). Tim's back in charge for this one, with Ken and Rob… also playing demos on the side! Everyone was playing demos! So come one, come all, and check out our thoughts on a mix of Steam Next Fest drops, and that tiny demo of that tiny Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth thing. In This Episode: This week it’s time to talk about what we’re proud about in our gaming history! After last week’s gaming shames we decided to discuss the opposite. Beej and Void land in very different places with where they feel proud in gaming accomplishments. In many ways, Beej's gaming prides are socially based, looking at how he's made various accomplishments with different online communities such as World of Warcraft, Star Wars Galaxies, and all the way back to Ultima Online. Void is impressed that Beej might have been the person who invented Lootboxes, haha. Void, on the other hand, is proud of more single-player achievements, such as his major playthroughs of the entire Final Fantasy and Zelda series. Plus a lot more, obviously. He plays a lot of games, after all. We also discuss how these kinds of gaming prides and achievements are related to in-game achievements and trophies that are provided by the developers. Do we feel proud of getting those? Do they affect how we play the game in any meaningful way? We talk about it, and you'll just have to listen. Weekly Geekery BJ finished Avatar: The Last Airbender (which might be one of the best TV shows he's ever seen) and Link’s Awakening (Zelda with training wheels, really, but super fun), as well as sampling some new games like Jump Force, Spongebob Squarepants: The Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated, and Golf Story. Void watched Hamilton multiple times already even though it only released a few days ago, and he expects it to become even more of a staple in his life, being one of the movies he puts on when there's nothing else that sounds good. He also crit-pathed his way through Assassin’s Creed 3 in record time (well, maybe not record time, but definitely faster than most playthroughs). He talks about what the series looks like when playing it from a returner's perspective. In This Episode: We talk all about pulling old game concepts and genres up to modern standards and making them feel new! We dig into the idea of taking an old idea lying fallow and make it new and interesting again. Where’s the line between homage, rip off, just establishing a new genre, ongoing series? Void playing Valorant is what spawned the idea because it feels so much to him like a Counter-Strike follow-up. Whether that's good or bad, we can't say. But he knows that's how playing it feels. So is that theft of the CS idea? Or is it revitalization of an old formula, giving it new life with a different spin? We discuss other games like this, too, from Castlevania and Metroid, to Bloodstained, to Overwatch and even JRPGs that have taken their cues from Chrono Trigger over the years. Plus, there are games that have taken the base engine of a game like WarCraft 3, and then made a new game out of it...like DOTA did. We have Fortnite and PUBG that came from an ARMA mod, and even Counter-Strike itself was a Half-Life 2 mod. Where is the line in here that separates the original idea from the evolution? There's a lot to this topic, and we aren't 100% sure that we even named it right. But it's one of our favorite discussions we've had in a long time. So join us and let's talk about some games! Weekly Geekery We also have all sorts of things in weekly geekery like Dragon Quest IV, Hitman 2, Final Fantasy Lost Stranger, Archero, and some off the cuff PS5 reveal impressions. In This Episode: Void and Beej are homebound during the pandemic, just like most people are. We talk about what we’ve been up to, what keeps grabbing our interest, and what has been the best distraction from the news of the world. For the most part, we figure that social games of some sort work. We highly suggest Mario Kart of any kind. If you have access to anything Mario Kart, its worth playing with others during this time. You could also play Mario Party, which has been a blast over the internet for Beej. Final Fantasy XIV and World of Warcraft are always good choices, and Beej is on FFXIV Leviathan server as Lesser Wyrmsbane. Joe from Geektitude is on WoW, himself, but you'd have to ask him how to find his character (@epicgrays on Twitter). We also touch on Luigi's Mansion 3, My Little Scythe (a good intro to Eurogames, apparently), and Knighthood on iOS. Fun stuff, really. I mean, we're all indoors, gotta do something. Also, Animal Crossing New Horizons is amazing. Really amazing. And Void tries to convince BJ to give it a try. The things you can do on the island are so chill and relaxing, it's a fantastic way to spend a few hours while the outside world is so stressful. Open your gates, have some friends over, and just cross those animals. (Beej wrote this and doesn't understand the game. You cross animals, right? Like Dr. Moreau? Because it's on an Island this time? Get it? The Island of...ahhh, I give up.) In This Episode: Void and Beej are here with hard earned tips and tricks for working from home. We’ve done this off and on for years at this point so we wanted to let everyone know some of the things we’ve figured out that a lot of you are dealing with for the first time. Separate Work Space From Home Space If you don’t have enough room for that… then you need a “work mode” and “home mode” for your setup. Void has always had a work desk and a home desk in different areas of the house. His home desk has his gaming PC while the work desk is only set up for a laptop with work stuff on it. Beej does, this, too. He has both a laptop and a desktop and finds that when he needs to really work, he can get on the laptop to be less distracted from stuff than on the gaming pc. The Macbook is set up solely for work, while the gaming PC can be used for both. When You're Done, Be Done No one is watching you as closely as you think they are. Bosses included. You have to work and hit your deadlines, but when your day is supposed to be over, then truly disconnect and let it be over. If you have a Do Not Disturb function (Slack does, for instance), use it. Some jobs might not have this luxury, but if you do, set a time for DND mode and abide by it. Beej, for instance, stops working around 5pm but keeps Slack on DND past 7pm. That way, communication can still happen and handled when necessary, but it's on his terms. After 7pm, it can wait until 8am. Take Breaks From Your Workspace In the office, this happens organically through a lot of interruptions, casual chats, trips to the water cooler, and things like that. It won’t happen as much at home. Things will distract you, yes, but they won't be "breaks" as often. We've found that these are the best ways to disconnect for us. But yours might be different. That's okay. Just make sure you're taking breaks and disconnecting from work at regular intervals. 15-minute walk around the block, house, yard Play a video game for half an hour Take an actual hour break for lunch and make yourself some home-cooked food Beej suggests In The Floor Time with your pets. It really brightens the day. Communication is the Most Important Skill for Remote Work You need to stay in contact with your co-workers and supervisors. But it doesn't have to be constant. If you’re responding to people in an hour or less, you’re typically doing just fine. Emails can even wait longer because most people don't check them constantly. Don't be afraid of phone calls. Casual chats can’t happen so sometimes it’s a lot easier to get on the phone instead of sending 15 emails back and forth. Video chats actually do help, too. One-on-one calls with supervisors or employees with video make you feel much less alone. Talk to Other Humans. Regularly. No matter what kind of communication it is, make sure you're talking to other human beings regularly. Your pets are great listeners, but they aren't the best conversationalists. Other people help stimulate us and make us feel connected. So talk to them. Talk in your work Slack. Not just work Slack, though. We highly recommend having Slack groups that you’re a part of. Join our Slack server at https://slack.geektogeekmedia.com. We have an awesome community there, and we're all in this together. Same for Discord (https://discord.geektogeekmedia.com) and Twitter (@geektogeekcast or #GeekToGeek). These are lifelines. Use them. Working From Home Can Help Form New Habits Void started intermittent fasting when he was working from home because he had complete control of his schedule. Maybe you can start eating much healthier much easier when you can make food in your own kitchen for every meal. It’s easier to sneak exercise into your routine when you have more control over your schedule. In This Episode: We talk about where we stand with the Final Fantasy franchise right now. There's the FFVII Remake Demo on PS4, some FFXIV Shadowbringers talk, and even Void getting to the FFXV DLC that really should have been part of the main game! FF7 Remake Demo, Misc Thoughts: Void - Combat is fine. Not the best, not the worst. Curious to dig into the materia system. Beej - it’s not great, but at least it’s not totally button mashing with no real depth Void - Likes it better than FFXV. It feels more responsive. Beej - It feels like Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy XV had a baby, and XV has the dominant genetics Void really wants to replay it in “classic” mode to see how it feels. No jump button. Beej hates. You jump like in older 3d Zelda games, by running up to a ledge. It’s awkward. And I want to jump while running around, dangit. The buttons change their function based on combat, so if you get aggro and expect to dash away, think again. You’ve just opened up your tactics menu for a party member. The character swapping/menu opening during combat seems counterintuitive. Pressing X to open the menu instead of the D-Pad Up/Down made Beej constantly swap party members back and forth when all he needed was a Potion or to cast Thunder. Other SE games trained us that D-pad was how menus work in real-time ARPGs. Why change it now? WHY? It’s already obvious that it’s going to be much more fleshed out, both in terms of the world and the story. It will be filling in the gaps between the screens of the original while still making everything logically connect on the map is super impressive. Our primary concern is making the city of Midgar not seem samey all over. We want diverse locations and neighborhoods. The voice acting is top-notch -- except for Barrett. If he never speaks again, it will be too soon. Cloud and the others are all distinct and unique and it never felt out of place the way some voices feel in games. Talking to you as you move through the levels like in FFXV, getting to know your companions organically. Hype Level and Final Impressions? Void - much more excited (and I was already excited) BJ - I’ll buy it now. (Had cancelled my preorder and was waiting on initial opinions from people I trust) FFXV DLC Gladio - What if FFXV was a series of melee battle challenges? Prompto - What if FFXV was a Third person shooter? Ignis - What if FFXV was an area control game? There’s a part of Ignis’ story that should 100% be in the main game and not the DLC. Can’t believe this got cut from the story of the main game. If there’s one DLC that you should play out of all of them… it’s this one. Ardyn - What if we had more of the background story of the main villain of the game? Makes him even more sympathetic and understandable Comrades - Just bad. Bad bad. Bad...bad. Bad. Final Fantasy XIV Austin started playing again with a new account on Leviathan, and so did Beej. Austin's character is Vinn Astoltia and Beej is Lesser Wyrmsbane. No idea how much either of us will be on, but feel free to hit us up. We have a Free Company called Bluth. It's Arrested Development themed, and we have a house in Mist. Beej is kind of tired being the human lady he was through Heavensward and Stormblood. Likely gonna toss a tenner at the Mogstation to get a vial of fantasia to change my appearance. Let's be honest, he's gonna probably go back to Lalafell. Because Beej. Support the G2G Network! Tons of content at geektogeekmedia.com, more coming every week. Email Subscribe: geektogeekmedia.com/subscribe Weekly Geekery Beej: Bonding on Netflix is funny, vulgar, and not for children. Morbidly fascinating and totally not for everyone. Dragon Quest X on Switch Austin’s how-to post did super well on the site and people went nuts on FB for it since someone broke it down on how easy it was to get working in the US. (https://geektogeekmedia.com/geekery/dragonquestaustin/how-to-play-dragon-quest-x-in-america-on-nintendo-switch-for-free/) The whole of 1.0 and part of 2.0 are basically a free trial now, and you can play up to 440 hours. Prologue is short, and you don’t really need to know Japanese to do it. (https://geektogeekmedia.com/geekery/dragonquestaustin/adventures-in-astoltia-part-1-playing-the-prologue/) Combat is interesting. It’s not MMOish at all. Turn-based and menu-based, too. Void: Waking Sleeping Beauty is great. Watch it to learn about how Disney almost wasn't an animation studio. Dooku Lost really feels like they’re trying to wrap up the prequel trilogy expanded universe with new canon material. A lot of the most recent books touch on that time period and clone wars is coming back out This is the first Dooku focused story that I’ve actually liked. It's put together as a full-cast audio drama This feels like them tying a bow on some things and cleaning up dangling plot threads before the High Republic era kicks off Support the Podcast on Patreon You can go to https://patreon.com/geektogeekcast to support the podcast, and you can get some cool stuff, too. In This Episode: We both played through Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order and have a ton of thoughts on it. Overall, we liked it a lot! More Metroid DNA than we expected, and the combat is more Souls like than we thought (but it'sclosest to Sekiro Shadows Die Twice). The core premise of the game is great, and the world building that goes on is one of its strongest points. The characters are engaging from the beginning, even the side characters. Prauf, Greez, Cere...the villains, everyone. They’re well-rounded and make for a story that you become emotionally involved in immediately. Kal, the protagonist, is the weakest link in the story. And he’s not bad. Just...fine. He's the blank slate character. So yeah BD-1 is an excellent droid. He interacts with Kal in the best ways. Lightsaber customization is always fun. Took too long to get various lightsaber colors, though. Force vision and flashback sequences are amazingly well done. Learning new skills and powers really feels like you're learning them. The Echoes and dialogue they trigger are some of Beej's favorite parts of the game. Some of the most fun I’ve had is piecing together those peripheral stories and reading them in order. Difficulty level adjustments on the fly. Every game should have this. Combat got boring until Void cranked it down to storymode and then he felt like a Jedi. The load times on an original PS4 are 3-4 minutes long, and even though the combat is fairly enjoyable on normal difficulties, the load times are not. So Story Mode was a much better option overall. Lot of slides. They're...not great. Beej didn’t mind most of the slides. But holy crap were there a lot and the clipping on the landings after jumps was really bad. Interested in the Jedi who rejected the force and the padawan that became the ninth sister. As well as the Fallen Jedi and force users who survived the purge. Kinda disappointed that more than half of the worlds are ones we know super well in the lore (Ilum, Kashyyyk, Dathomir). I wish it had created more new worlds. Exploration isn’t super rewarding. It’s almost always just cosmetic things which… Void just kinda shrug at. They’re very meh. Ponchos. So. Many. Ponchos. Nightsisters were interesting for the first time ever. I liked Merrin’s story because she’s an actual person instead of just an evil force witch (like Nightsiters typically are) For Geekery this week BJ has been getting back into Star Wars with Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes and Star Wars Rebels. He’s also still hooked on Mario Kart Tour and Luigi’s Mansion 3. Void watched The Crown Season 3, played around with CarPlay, and watched more of The Mandalorian. In This Episode: We talk about what even makes a game an action RPG and then we pull out some of our top action RPG picks to discuss. For Geekery, BJ and Void both watched the same thing around the same time so we discuss Fleabag and The Boys. BJ is still loving Dragon Quest XI S on the Switch and Void got around to watching Spider-Man Far From Home. In This Episode: BJ is back from Mexico and has an adventure to share including Mayan ruins and hours upon hours food! Void is hanging in there after a crazy month of work but managed to sneak in a bit of geekery and some Nintendo Labo with his kids. In This Episode: Beej is training for a marathon and Void’s mind is boggled at how someone even approaches that. BJ also picked up a few new Final Fantasy games and grabbed a Fitness Quest game on iOS to help his training. Void brings some interesting shows and movies to the table with The Wandering Earth and Savage Builds. He also tried out Kind Words and found it surprisingly charming. In This Episode: All the games came out this week! All of them. Each and every one. From the new Link’s Awakening on Switch, the Untitled Goose Game that everyone is talking about, to Sayonara Wild Hearts and all of the dozens and dozens of Apple Arcade games released in the last few days. There’s a ton of Fall game releases to discuss! And you know what? We discuss them all. Or at least the ones worth discussing. We dive in pseudo-deep on Link's Awakening because Void hasn't been able to devote a lot of time on it, and Beej's copy of the Dreamer Edition was backordered. We will be sure to discuss it more at length in future episodes. The Untitled Goose Game is a delight. Without spoiling anything...there's goose who's a jerk, and you get to play as that goose and be a jerk. The puzzles you solve...involve being a goose and a jerk. It's awesome. Everyone should play it. And then there's the piece de resistance... Void Played Every Single Apple Arcade Game in 3 Days Much of the episode is devoted to how many games on the Apple Arcade service (free month trial, then $4.99 USD afterward) are worth playing. We 100% believe that this service is worth the price, if you're interested in mobile gaming and/or have kids and want gacha-less mechanics and some just legit fun games. We go in depth on Sayonara Wild Hearts, What the Golf?, Various Daylife, Assemble with Care, Over the Alps, The Floor is Lava, Oceanhorn 2, Cat Quest II, Lego Brawls...and so much more. Like...for real, this particular service is one that we didn't expect to find truly great games on. And we were shocked. If you have been hesitant about the service and been like "nah, I don't like mobile games enough" (like Beej was), then you should listen and give it a shot. Because these aren't "good for a mobile game" games, these are just good games. At least a lot of them are. It has been 22 weeks so far and we are only now getting to our first episode dedicated to a Legend of Zelda title! The Nintendo title, released in 1991 for the SNES, is widely regarded as one of the best games of all time and remains at the top of many best lists to this day. Why? What makes the top-down action-adventure of a boy in green saving the world such a pinnacle of video game achievement even a quarter of a century later? How will it stack up for future generations of gamers when the gaming landscape continues to evolve? Jack and Daniel, sans Jeremy this week, discuss this and a whole lot more.
