Games of the Year 2018 In this episode: Void and Beej run down their favorite games of the year… including some special guest appearances.  Not to mention all the honorable mentions up front! From Spider-Man to Red Dead Redemption 2, we discuss the most wonderful games we’ve played this year.  Do your favorites make the cut? Where does Hitman 2 fall in? Or what about Xenoblade Chronicles? And does Persona 5 climb the ranks for the second year in a row? We know, but you don’t! Keep an ear out for some fun stuff like how Beej finally tried Smash like Void said to last episode, and we have special guests and best-of lists from special guests you don’t wanna miss. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate In this episode: Void and Beej have very different opinions of Smash Bros and it all comes out in this episode. Do we Smash each other? Or our expectations?  Super Smash Bros Ultimate on Nintendo Switch is the smashiest Smash that ever smashed a smash. It’s a really good version of the game and it’s already my favorite Mostly it’s great because everything (and everyone) is here from older versions Plus the single player is the most built out that it’s ever been with both Classic and World of Light modes. Small tweaks Brought back mid-air dodges You can see the bounds of the level when you’re off the screen Defense is less effective which speeds up the game The game is faster in general than the last two have been (Wii U/3DS & Brawl) If you  missed getting to experience all the DLC for the Wii U version, it’s all in Ultimate on day 1. Mostly it’s an extremely refined and iterated version of the last Smash for the Wii U Our histories with Smash Bros are entirely too long and detailed to talk about in the notes. So you should absolutely go and listen to the episode to hear what's up. And the question that really got the best discussion is: Why does BJ hate Smash Bros but like fighting games AND Why does Void dislike fighting games but like Smash Bros?  Again, listen to the episode because this one...well, it's a pretty good time. And it immediately made Beej go into his living room and play Smash on the Wii U. Intrigued at how? Find out by listening to the episode, friendo! Year-End Geekery In this episode: Void and Beej catch up on things that need to be said before the end of the year. The end of the year is hectic for everyone, and we have a lot of stuff that needs to be talked about before Season 4 of the podcast rolls out. Beej's stuff: BJ ate a really good sandwich… like… really good. Holy moly. The Dragon Prince Frame-rate thing is interesting. Rayla’s Scottish accent seemed so fake, but the actress is Scottish Reminds me of Ni No Kuni 2 because it’s a pseudo-lighthearted fantasy Season 2 was greenlit. Yay! Overwatch New Symmetra. Again, holy moly. So much goodness. Legends of Aria - https://www.legendsofaria.com Formerly Shards Online Early Access right now Pretty much is old-school UO. 30 bucks for the initial buy-in. Steam in January. Fully supports player mods and servers Ralph Breaks the Internet Not quite as good as the first one. But still really fun. The Disney princesses were by far the highlight Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 2 Just a good show, ya know? Void's stuff: Persona 5 art book! So stylish! Off to be the Wizard Is this LitRPG? I don’t know where that line is drawn exactly. The premise of the book is that someone finds a file that controls all the variables in the world and uses it to essentially become a wizard (with the use of computer skills). It’s essentially a geek power fantasy. The Coming Storm (Audible Original) about Weather Data Government data that’s been collected but never really been uploaded to the cloud Communication and psychology problems of weather warnings and alerts Starlink Battle for Atlas It’s like Starfox, No Man’s Sky, and an Ubisoft open world game had a baby Hand-crafted solar system Fun exploring Combat is surprisingly fun because you get to mix and match weapons on the fly There’s an actual story This is also a pretty good Starfox game (Beej agrees. It's a great Starfox game.) Minecraft story mode on Netflix Choose your own adventure on Netflix. Pretty neat. RDR2 Online Seems like a much better fit for the world they’ve created There’s also still so much riding around between interesting things. Longing for more fast travel options Co-op story missions are fun Some of the competitive playlists are fun I bet this would be great with a regular group of friends if you can schedule that into your life Hitman 2 More of the same in a really good way! Plus, if you own season 1 you get all those maps for free in the season 2 engine with the new items and elements New maps! Some are awesome I love the intricate systems. It’s a mix of puzzles, logic, learning, mastery of a level, and execution. It’s everything I loved about Hitman Season 1 but even more. This is probably one of my favorite games of all time (replacing Hitman Season 1) since it has all of season 1 in it for me. Or you can buy the season 1 content to add it to Hitman 2 for like $20. Spider-Man Turf Wars DLC It’s about Yuri and Hammerhead and the escalating mafia family gang war I miss Black Cat but she’ll probably show up again in the last DLC I’m guessing Not as strong as the first chapter of this 3 part DLC but I’m still glad I got it and I’m excited for the third one Geeky Offer of the Week (or Support the Podcast!) patreon.com/geektogeekcast Join Our Community! The Phantom Geekery In this episode: Void and Beej catch up on the last few weeks. This is the time of year where adult responsibilities are often met with germ bombs. So between being sick and work and everything else, we are double recording a lot. In the between time, we do a lot of geeky stuff to ease our minds and chill. And this time, we had a to catch up on. From Double Dare Live to She-Ra, Beej was swamped lately. He also got a new computer, played Fallout 76, Overwatch, and Xenoblade Chronicles 2.  He also watched a bunch of shows like She-Ra, Voltron, and Adam Ruins Everything. And Void...well, we don't know how he gets so much time. He rocked out Gamefly until next year, actually found a gam ehe wanted to buy (gasp!) and sampled a bunch of shows but only ended up sticking with Castlevania season 2.  He also played more Red Dead Redemption 2, Fallout 76, more Draglia lost, and is loving Pokemon Let’s Go Eevee! Fallout 76 & Multiplayer Gaming In this episode: Void has been playing Fallout 76, Red Dead Redemption, and Draglia Lost which has gotten him thinking about where we both stand with multiplayer games at the moment.  We dig in about what’s working for us and what’s not. We are both in a very similar place in terms of not wanting to devote a ton of time to them for no reward, but the way we want to dig in on that is different. Beej is into the more asynchronous multiplayer games right now, while Void looks at Dragalia Lost as a perfect casual filler because you get real-time interaction by killing raid bosses. RDR2 is a fun experiment, but Void wanted a Wild West Horsey Game and has instead been given a Work Your Way East Oops Now You Are In New Orleans Horsey Game. It is a fantastic technological achievement, but Void wonders if the game may be better multiplayer because the world is so interesting, but the story is going in a direction he's not happy with. Additionally, Fallout:76 has some good ideas and looks promising, but the storytelling is hit-or-miss because of it being done through audio logs and terminals. While that isn't a bad thing on its own, the fact that you tend to be in a voice party with others means that you can easily miss pertinent information and narrative because your party is either talking or wants to move on. Additionally, the Fallout:76 world feels kind of artificially empty because of how the story is being told right now. That may change as the game opens up, though. This is beta, after all. Geek Offer of the Week patreon.com/geektogeekcast Weekly Geekery BJ did some MCU rewatching with Spider-Man Homecoming and Infinity War, is still playing Marvel Strike Force, and gets to go watch a live show of Double Dare. Void gives a Gamefly update on Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Dragon Quest XI, Yoku’s Island Express, and Labyrinth of refrain: Coven of Dusk.  He also accidentally tangents the podcast onto the topic of different generations with a discussion of the book Breathing Machine: A memoir of computers. Marvel's Spider-Man Heist DLC In this episode: Spider-Man's first DLC pack was released on the PS4, and even though Beej hasn't finished the game yet, he had to hear about what Void thought about it. We discuss how the game is fantastic for its action, but also works as a character piece because it makes you feel for these people. In the original game, you really care about MJ and May and Peter and others. In The Heist, Felicia Hardy makes her first appearance and even though there's a lot of good Spidey-action, the story is focused around her and Peter's relationship. Remember, too, that the Spider-Man PS4 DLC does take place after the events of the main story. However, you don't have to complete the main game to play it. So if you want to jump in and get your Black Cat on without powering through the major narrative. They connect, yes, but not to the point where it's major spoilers or the cause of major confusion (Major Confusion, #salute). Oh, and they put the PS4 Spider-Man into the comics already. Yep, for real. He's from Earth-1048. And he's awesome. Geek Offer of the Week: patreon.com/geektogeekcast Weekly Geekery BJ voted, geeked out about Spider-Geddon Comics, Marvel Unlimited, X-Men Blue, and Spider-Gwen. iPhone Xs and Xs Max In this episode: We both got new phones in the same week so we need to talk about them. Void hadn’t upgraded his phone in 4 and a half years, so it was definitely time! Beej, on the other hand, likes new shinies and technology and upgrades pretty often.  Beej and his wife got new phones, too, just like Void and his wife did. Which phones they got were swapped, too. Weird. While this is a discussion on new phones and technology, we talk about the differences in current mobile operating systems, Android vs iOS, and even why we are drawn to certain kinds of devices. It's interesting to see the features that draw us both to the same kinds of phones because they're pretty different in terms of use, but we also overlap in them adding to the overall whole of the device. The Geekery Awakens In this episode: This week was all about the Geekery Catch-Up. Since Beej went out of the country a few weeks ago, we had to record two episodes the week before, and he had internet issues the week after. So there was a good amount of time there for geekery to accumulate. We wanted to do one, big episode about it because not only was there so much of it, but we had so much to say about it. From books and audiobooks and video games and movies and Halloween cooking shows and gacha games, Nintendo games...we have a ton to talk about. We even go on some tangents (MoviePass! *shakes fist angrily in the air*, the future of the Netflix MCU: thoughts?) All in all, it's a great episode full of cool stuff. Oh, and by the way, we need questions for our semi-annual Q&A episode, so if you have a question of any sort, tweet at us, email us, throw it toward us on Slack, Discord, or Reddit...wherever. Overseas Travel In this episode: This week we discuss Beej’s recent trip to Barcelona and some of Void’s past travels. We talk about how traveling internationally makes us think about all of the stuff we take for granted in our own lives. Such as having so much space in America, Beej living beside cows, Void being able to visit Canada easily, and much more. Being able to travel internationally is great to be able to have discussions with people from different cultures and backgrounds, which helps us learn and expand the context in which we live our lives. Beej wasn't aware of the delicate political balance in Barcelona right now. Void wants to travel more, but needs to wait until his kids are older. There is also a discussion about how when you travel, it's easy to figure out where you belong and whether you want to live elsewhere. For Void, travel appeals a lot, but he doesn't want to live anywhere and raise a family other than MN. For Beej, he's open to the possibility, but it will definitely not be Barcelona. Void is probably still obsessed with Spider-Man, although it’s impossible to know with this time-shifted episode.  He also watched some WWII movies, Oceans 8, got around to trying the Megaman 11 demo, and finally got his hands on the early access version of the Lord of the Rings Living Card Game (or LotR LCG if you prefer). In this episode:  Every year, Void has a midyear party thrown for him: E3. When the biggest conference in the gaming world brings all the developers, publishers, and gaming media together, Void settles in, makes a schedule, and watches as much gaming news and announcements as he can stomach. This is the one time of year that he lets himself get hyped up and buys in. This year, he talks us through the 2018 E3, hitting every one of the major press conferences and trying (and succeeding?) on talking about every single game and announcement that was made over the course of the weekend. From Microsoft to Bethesda to Square Enix to Nintendo, let Void be your tour guide of what to expect over the next year in the video game world. It's definitely worth a listen Weekly Geekery Our whole topic is geekery! It's E3! But, fine...you win. Beej watched The Toys that Made Us and loved it, is halfway through Tales of Hearts R on the Vita, and is eyeing Bravely Default as his next JRPG victim because of how pretty the demo of Bravely Second is. Reading State of Mind In this episode: We update each other on reading, audio books, when and how we’re reading, and basically everything that goes with it. While both of us are heavy readers, our patterns and habits work out really different. For instance, Void loves audiobooks and ebooks to sync so he can suit his situation, and Beej keeps his audio and written text separate.  The idea of branching out of our comfort zones comes up, with us both being engrossed in sci-fi and fantasy, but feeling the need to branch out because much of the fiction we read feels very "samey."  Non-fiction is drawing our attention, but for different reasons and with different media. We discuss tools to get through both podcasts and audiobooks faster, and what the most comforting parts of being a reader are to us. In general, we just discuss our love of books and reading and why we are where we are. We think you guys will be able to join in on this, too, because that's a big part of our community. Weekly Geekery Beej is still watching Crazy Ex Girlfriend, started the Punisher, finished Lock-In, is trying Disgaea, and is sheepish about cake for some reason.  He should just embrace cake as a fact of life. Cake is important. What’s the point of life if you’re not going to live it? Void played Minit, went back to playing Assassin’s Creed Origins, and has some thoughts about the Solo trailer.  He also blatantly owns the fact that he enjoys eating pizza, cake, and Reese’s. He’s not afraid to live a little. Junk food is good, embrace it. “Dumb” Movies In this episode: We talk about movies that are dumb but kind of glorious because of it.  You know, movies where you can shut off your brain, but still enjoy them! We talk about some of our favorites including The Fifth Element, The Fast and the Furious, and the even sillier stuff like 21 Jump Street and the new Jumanji. We've talked at length before about movies being successful despite not being great cinema, and that's what these are. They are meant to be silly, and that's what we love about them. That's why we watch them dozens of times. And we also talk about some movies that COULD be dumb and fun, but end up just being bad. We are sad about those because the concept is so good and so dumb. But instead of being the good dumb, they're just...dumb. Sad times. Geek Offer of the Week: audibletrial.com/geektogeekcast - The Powder Mage trilogy. Discussion ranges from Overwatch and its loot boxes to Battlefront 2 and its loot boxes. Both are similar systems, but we aren't sold on one of them. DLC and microtransactions and expansion content are increasingly becoming blurred together, and we talk about just what that means for the future of the industry, as well as our interest in continuing with games beyond their initial content. Also, Beej just doesn't really get FPS games. #shrug Weekly Geekery Beej is still obsessed with all things Brandon Sanderson and is prepping for Oathbreaker.
