Roberto Diaz joins us for this week's episode while enjoying his first ever trip to Ireland. The former Golden Boy Promotions matchmaker was over for the Jason Quigley homecoming and sat down to discuss his relationship with the Donegal contender as well as working with other Irish fighters such as Jamie Kavanagh, Spike O'Sullivan and Aaron McKenna. He goes in depth on what the job of matchmaker entails and why it's sometimes like being a goalkeeper in football – make one bad mistake and everyone forgets all the great saves you've made and blames you for the loss. Roberto's got an amazing life story too. A cancer survivor, he grew up in San Francisco and nearly fell into gang life before being sent to live with his relatives in Mexico as a teenager. He ended up working in boxing through his friendship with Marco Antonio Barrera and ultimately became one of the most influential people in all of the sport. Here he tells us about working with stars such as Canelo Alvarez, Bernard Hopkins, Ricky Hatton, Erik Morales, Sugar Shane Mosley, and Oscar De La Hoya - and the perils of being a matchmaker. We also look ahead to some upcoming superfights like Gervona Davis v Ryan Garcia, Devin Haney v Vasyl Lomachenko and Katie Taylor v Chantelle Cameron… Hosted on Acast. On this episode of The Fighter's Voice, Richard Ortiz and UFC Veteran and Co-Host Cole Esovedo (Apache Kid) interview Roberto Diaz. Roberto A. Diaz is a 48-year-old matchmaker for one of the leading boxing promoters in the world, Golden Boy Promotions. Golden Boy Promotions is a company founded and owned by 1992 Gold Medalist & 10-time World Champion Oscar “The Golden Boy” De La Hoya. Diaz has worked with numerous gifted athletes, including some of the best in boxing history such as Bernard Hopkins, Marco Antonio Barrera, Ricky Hatton, Erik Morales, Sugar Shane Mosley, and Daniel “Miracle Man” Jacobs. He strongly believes that boxing is a sport that - like many other sports - requires hard work, will, and dedication. He also believes that boxing is serious and can be dangerous if not taken with discipline. His bottom line is “You Don't Play Boxing.” Diaz has been working for Golden Boy Promotions for nine years now, and he loves it like it was still his first day because every day brings something new. His roles are to make fights, which include matching the fighters, building them into world champions, and making fights that both fans and networks want to see. He says that his dreams come true are being able to work for such a legendary fighter and Hall of Famer like Oscar De La Hoya, as well as to sign some of the best talent from all over the world. THIS week we take a deep dive into the eternally contentious subject of scoring in the light of yet more controversial judging decisions.Robert Smith, of the Boxing Board of Control, admits there are flaws in the current system while Matt Christie and Alex Steedman debate the issue.Scoring is of course just one part of officiating; at the weekend, referee Howard Foster was accused of allowing Josh Warrington to take too much punishment in his punishing defeat to Mauricio Lara. Two delicious fights are previewed: David Avenesyan-Josh Kelly in the UK and the all-Mexican war between Miguel Berchelt and Oscar Valdez in America. The first slugfest between Marco Antonio Barrera and Erik Morales is the subject of This Week In History and Jonathan Rendall’s This Bloody Mary Is The Last Thing I Own is the book of the week. Please rate, review and subscribe if you like what you hear! Thanks, as always, for the support.
Pat Healy sits down with renowned boxing promoter Lou Dibella. Lou discusses his start in boxing which began with a job interview with the New York Yankees which subsequently led him to HBO. At HBO, Lou was able to provide massive contributions to the promotion of the sport. Dibella launched "Boxing After Dark" which provided a platform for then unknown fighters in lower weight classes. "BAD" helped birth a catalog of legendary fighters such as Arturo Gatti, Mickey Ward, Marco Antonio Barrera, Erik Morales, Miguel Cotto and Marcos Maidana. Dibella has had decades of experience promoting Championship fighters in nearly every division. Pat and Lou discuss the state of boxing today and the need for organization with champions and weight divisions. Lou dives deep into the details of different network deals within boxing and the politics that prevent many marquee matchups from happening. Hot Topics include heavyweight division landscape, being a managing partner of two AA Baseball teams, Manny Pacquiao's next opponent. Super Scot Alex Arthur won British, Commonwealth, European and world honours but his career didn't reach the heights he had hoped. Arthur boxed the likes of Willie Limond, Ricky Burns, Kobo Gogoladze and many more but missed out on the big nights and the big fights with the likes of Joan Guzman and Marco Antonio Barrera that he craved. Arthur now trains his sons but here talks about his dramatic battles with the scales, with Michael Gomez and with retirement – as well as his friendship with Scott Harrison – as he reflects on the wonderful highs and dramatic lows.

For 22 years Claude Abrams worked on the weekly boxing magazine Boxing News, serving more than 10 years as editor. He was hired by his predecessor Harry Mullan and then subsequently hired his successor, Tris Dixon. In between, he covered huge fights, was at the small halls and was exposed to things only a BN editor is exposed to; from rowing with promoters, to going to Azumah Nelson's house, to sparring with Naseem Hamed and taking private jets with Emanuel Steward and then having dinner with Marvin Hagler and Tommy Hearns. He was also ringside for some of the best fighters of all time, including Lennox Lewis, Mike Tyson, Roy Jones, Floyd Mayweather, Evander Holyfield, Erik Morales, Marco Antonio Barrera and many more. When he left BN, he went 'cold turkey' and travelled the world. But he dusted off plenty of war stories for this incredible journey down memory lane.
