In episode 88 of Citizens Climate Radio, we dive into the passion and action of young climate activists, exploring their journeys from concern to meaningful action. Host, Peterson Toscano leads the conversation, spotlighting the endeavors of students like Emily O'Keefe and Helen Tiffin in fostering awareness about climate change and feasible solutions, focusing particularly on the carbon fee and dividend policy. See full show notes and transcript at CCLUSA.org/radio From Concern to Action Emily O'Keefe, a student at the College of William and Mary, candidly shared her progression from a state of existential concern about climate change to actively seeking out impactful solutions. Emily's journey started with a realization about the importance of sustainable living and protecting the environment. This ultimately led her to a gap year where she could detach and reconnect with nature by hiking the Appalachian Trail. "I want to do something really big about climate change. And I'm just trying to figure out how can I do that?" - Emily O'Keefe Evolving Ideas & Shared Enthusiasm Emily's initial idea to start a social movement was supported and molded by her friends, like Helen Tiffin. They delved deep into discussions about the nature of the movement and the message it should convey. Eventually, she was introduced to the carbon fee and dividend policy by a friend, Philip Ignatov. This policy became the focal point of their movement due to its effectiveness and tangible impact. Helen Tiffin supported Emily's enthusiasm, remarking on the nonpartisan nature and wide appeal of the carbon fee and dividend idea, noting, “It really is something that we can all agree upon.” Carbon Fee & Dividend – An Equitable Solution The carbon fee and dividend policy essentially imposes a fee on corporations extracting fossil fuels, making fossil fuel-intensive products more expensive and thereby encouraging consumers to opt for more sustainable alternatives. Importantly, the policy also includes an equitable dividend system where the revenue from the fees is distributed equally among Americans. "So that actually makes it so that the majority of Americans, around two-thirds, will actually break even or profit from the money coming back to them in this cashback form, than they have to pay in increased prices." - Emily O'Keefe Building a Movement Emily, Helen, and their friends engaged in creating signs which read Most Effective Climate Policy #carbonfeeanddividend bit.ly/writecongresshere They raised awareness on their campus, and beyond and fostered a ‘snowball effect', enabling more and more students and people to recognize and understand the carbon fee and dividend policy, spreading across multiple universities and leveraging online platforms like Instagram for greater reach. Their campaign also linked to direct actions, creating templates for people to write to Congress and advocate for the policy. “It is all about spreading that awareness and education and whatever form it presents itself,” Helen stated. Sustaining Impact & Longevity The Carbon Fee and Dividend Movement initiated by Emily and her friends has found a stable home base within the Citizens Climate Lobby's Higher Education Team, ensuring the sustainability and longevity of their efforts. "We are going to be partnered with Friday's For Future in advocating for this...This will bring a lot of power to the movement." - Emily O'Keefe Emphasizing the nonpartisan and optimistic values of the Citizens Climate Lobby, Emily believes in the importance of embodying these values for the successful advancement of the movement. They continue to use platforms like Slack to coordinate efforts across various chapters and provide resources to aid climate work. Follow the Climate Fee and Dividend Movement on Instagram and visit their website. Takeaways This episode sheds light on the relentless spirit of young activists, their journey of transforming concern into impactful action, and the communal spirit that propels the movement forward. Veteran climate expert Dr Richard Lindzen made a name for himself before the term "climate scientist" had even been invented. In an interview with the pioneering atmospheric physicist and former emeritus professor of meteorology at MIT, he recounted how, between 1989 and 1996, funding for climate science in the US increased by a factor of 15, giving birth to the field of climate science and its absurdly stretched list of climate impacts. Having begun his research on climate change in the mid-70s motivated by a sincere interest in understanding the Earth's climate regimes, Lindzen's assessment of the various elements paraded as scientific evidence of an impending climate catastrophe is remarkably sensible, revealing the complicity of the media and politicians in forcing the disastrous climate change narrative upon an unsuspecting and trusting public from the very beginning. Politicians, business leaders, and activists from around the world are meeting this and next week in Glasgow, Scotland, to make commitments and urge others to do the same to keep the planet from overheating more than it already is. Earth's global temperature has risen 1.1 C and as the planet has warmed, fires have raged in Australia and California, heatwaves and floods have killed hundreds around the world. So what can be done to keep the temperature from rising .4 or more degrees? Christians have been actively petitioning God for prayer. Believers in Asia, Europe, and North America gathered monthly from spring to fall to offer intercessory prayers ahead of the United Nations climate change conference, in an event organized by Lausanne/World Evangelical Alliance Creation Care Network, A Rocha International, Youth With A Mission England, Christian Missionary Fellowship International, Tearfund, and Young Evangelicals for Climate Action. The Young Christian Climate Network organized about 2,000 people to walk between the southwestern tip of the UK to Glasgow to raise awareness about climate change and the current practices leading the earth's rise in temperature. When you're a whitewater river guide, severe back problems don't fit in with the program. That's the predicament podcast guest Ken Streater found himself in when he was in his early thirties. He spent a lot of time in bed and lost himself in a deep depression. He had a great discussion with Rebeccah Silence, host of the Tougher Together, Breakthrough podcast, and shared some insight to help us all get through the tough times. Ken defines breakthrough as getting to a different plane of awareness through peeling the layers back. One way to reach this higher awareness is to “unconditionally listen,” according to Ken. This means quieting the noise in your head to keep it from interfering with your listening opportunities. If you can't quiet the noise… go to Plan B, which is to keep your mouth shut! Once he got back on track, he decided to increase his earnings by investing in real estate. This was in 2006, and the market crashed in 2008, leaving Ken with major debt pressure and mortgages he was unable to meet. He found himself in the abyss of depression once more, with sleepless nights and the fear of losing everything. When he evaluated his career choices, he decided that rather than go back to the traditional definition of “success,” he would create a real estate brokerage that celebrates community. He began operating from a mindset of passion instead of profits, and it made all the difference. These days, Ken takes walks. This time helps him to consider what's important to him. He's learned to quiet the noise and lean into the pain. He observes that it's essential to have moments in your day doing something you really want to do. As an internationally renowned author, Ken writes books about community and hosts a podcast about Good Change. Breakthrough hurts, says Ken… but don't be afraid of the pain. The reward is such an epiphany, a moment of joy. If you'd like to learn more about Ken Streater, visit his website. Ken's podcast can provide additional listening. We're always Tougher Together! In April of this year, Sanchali Pal launched Joro, an app that works like a fitbit for your carbon footprint. Joro assigns a carbon score to users’ credit card purchases and then connects users with offsets they can buy to mitigate their footprint. Part of Pal’s motivation for building Joro was that she wanted a tool that would not only allow her to better measure the impact of her lifestyle on climate change, but that would also give users a step-by-step path to make a difference in the face of what can seem like an overwhelming challenge. In this episode of Skydeck, associate editor Jen Flint talks to Pal about the pandemic’s impact on both her business and on global carbon emissions, and the insight it can offer us about tackling climate change.

We're 870 Billion dollars in debt. That's the amount of credit card debt Americans have as of the end of 2018. It's more debt then we've ever had. If the economy is booming and people feel more secure then ever, why do they keep borrowing? Our economy will suffer another recession, that's a certainty. And when it does there will be new calls for more regulation, more spending, and more government intervention. But none of that scares me as much as the climate change movement. The push by those in Congress to "fix" our climate is the new religion in Washington. It is a classic power grab and I want to explain exactly what's happening so you know how to respond. Anyone, technically, can build a business. But it takes real skill to convert an audience into die-hard followers who will stick with you no matter what. Ben Rattray is an expert at doing just that, now at the helm of one of the largest online communities in the world, not to mention a major force for social change. Rattray is the founder of Change.org, one of the world's biggest social enterprises with over 100 million users spread across 196 countries, empowering everyday people to create and join social causes. In 2012, he was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world, according to Time magazine, and he's partnered with titans ranging from Virgin to Amnesty International. But before it became the massive vehicle for online activism it is today, Change.org looked very different. In fact, it actually wasn't until 2011 that Change.org became the online petition platform we all know and love today. Like most entrepreneurs, Rattray had to go through a few pivots before finally developing a model that actually worked. While most entrepreneurs can only afford to pivot maybe once or twice, if they're lucky, Rattray had the power of community behind him. And that power can take you a long way. Rattray did what most others could not, he managed to not only build a huge community that loved what he was doing, but he was also able to keep them loyal to his brand even while undergoing multiple changes. You don't have to be in social enterprise to understand the magnitude of such an accomplishment, and just how valuable it can be to any business. Luckily for our listeners, Rattray knows exactly how to do it. In this episode you'll learn: Why a name is everything. Rattray goes into detail about how to find the right name for your company Why you always need to find investment before you launch How to take advantage of upsells and cross-sells to increase your bottom line Pivoting and changing your business model The how-to guide for mobilizing your community using content & so much more!
