Our second-to-last episode this week features another unique disc jockey retrospect: Richard Belzer. Aside from wearing so many hats pre and post-fame, what are some of his whackiest late night show, comic relief & TV appearances? What do today's crowd probably recognize him for outside of just being a cynical detective on every other program? Other Topics Include: *Questioning if some of his conspiracy theories got him booted from some comedy circuits *JJ & Tom do their best Chief Dan George & Jonathan Winters impressions at the end to make a point on this era of comedians *An analysis on other modern groundbreakingly witty comedians Patrice O'Neal, Jon Lovitz, Norm Macdonald, Bob Burr, Greg Giraldo, Bob Zany & Maria Bamford *Why Aziz Anzari, Bryan Callen & Bert Kreischer arguably weren't funny to begin with *And Tom gets to talks about his stand-up comedy days! 1970 was an important year for Indian-themed Westerns, with A Man Called Horse and Soldier Blue both released within months of each other. But by far the most popular Indian Western of that year was Arthur Penn's Oscar-nominated Little Big Man. On this episode, Andrew Patrick Nelson discusses the film's public reception, its Vietnam war symbolism, the acclaimed performance of supporting actor Chief Dan George, and many other issues surrounding the Dustin Hoffman classic. The episode also features a special bonus interview with documentarian Alex Sherratt, who co-directed The Real Wild West, a new 4-part docuseries available exclusively on the Curiosity Stream platform. To watch a trailer for The Real Wild West and to subscribe to the platform, visit the Curiosity Stream website.
The last year of the 19th century saw the birth of Chief Dan George and John Tootoosis, two of the most influential Indigenous men of the 20th century. The year was also the year of a terrible fire in Dawson City, the Boer War continued and Treaty 8 was signed. We are beyond thrilled to be joined this week by Dr. Angelica Lawson (Northern Arapaho), an Assistant Professor of Film Studies and Ethnic Studies at the University of Colorado Boulder. In this episode, Dr. Lawson talks to us about Native American representation in films throughout Hollywood's timeline. From her, we gain an understanding on how Indigenous identities are portrayed in silent pictures and early Westerns. We also learn the definition of revisionist Westerns and their groundbreaking impact in sharing more developed Native American characters. And finally, we revisit movies from the 1990s through today, with tips on where to access filmography created by Native American artists. This was such a special episode for us and we hope you'll share with a friend! Below are the films, television programs, and literary pieces referenced in the episode. Through his life, Chief Dan George would be a chief of his people, a poet, an activist and musicians. It was as an actor he found the most success though, earning an Oscar nomination in 1971. He was much more than that, and his Lament for Confederation in 1967 remains a touchstone for Indigenous activism in the 20th century. In this episode, Alaina resurrects one of her old series: looking at the live-action feature films of the Walt Disney studio. Following the deaths of the studio's founding brothers, and the beginning of a long period of rocky financials, Disney's film output was, well, boring and bad. We look over their movies from 1970-1975 to point out the few bright spots, place people and trends into their contexts, and bring up the much better work these artists were capable of. Links! A powerful film from one of the hot new directors of the late 1960’s, Arthur Penn. One of the few films that successfully manages to tweak “the old west” while at the same time being highly reverent to the ways of the American Indians. A truly great film, to be watched again and again, if only for the wonderful scenes between Dustin Hoffman and Chief Dan George.
