EPISODE 76 - “MEMORABLE OSCAR SPEECHES OF THE GOLDEN ERA OF HOLLYWOOD” - 2/24/2025 Winning an Oscar is a dream for most people who work in Hollywood. But you can't just win the Oscar, you have to have a good speech once your name is called and you head to the podium. There have been some great ones — OLIVIA COLEMAN's funny and cheeky speech hit the right tone and who can forget JACK PALANCE's one-arm push-ups or CUBA GOODING's exuberance? There have also been some bad ones — don't we all still cringe a little at SALLY FIELDS' “You like me” speech? As we prepare to celebrate the 97th annual Academy Award ceremony, Steve and Nan look back on some of their favorite Oscar speeches and why they resonate. So put on your tux, don the gown and jewels, pop the champagne, and join us for a fun talk about … well, people talking.  SHOW NOTES:  Sources: “Five Times The Oscars Made History,” January 20, 2017, www.nyfa.edu; “Hollywood History: How World War II Forced the Academy to Rethink the 1942 Oscars,” April 16, 2021, Entertainment Weekly; “Charlie Chaplin vs. America Explores the Accusations that Sent a Star Into Exile,” October 24, 2023, byTerry Gross, www.npr.com; “The Most Memorable Oscar Speeches in Oscar History,” March 6, 2024, by Shannon Carlin, www.time.com;   Wikipedia.com; TCM.com; IMDBPro.com; www.Oscars.org; Movies Mentioned:  Stella Dallas (1938), starring Barbara Stanwyck, John Boles, Anne Shirley, & Alan Hale; Gone With The Wind (1939), starring Vivian Leigh, Clark Gable, Olivia de Havilland, Leslie Howard, Hattie McDaniel, Butterfly McQueen, Thomas Mitchell, & Barbara O'Neil; How Green Was My Valley (1941), starring Walter Pidgeon, Maureen O'Hara, & Donald Crisp; Sergeant York (1941), starring Gary Cooper, Joan Leslie, & Walter Brennan;  The Devil and Miss Jones (1941), staring Jean Arthur Robert Cummings, & Charle Coburn; Here Comes Mr. Jordan (1941), starring Robert Montgomery, Claude Rains, & Evelyn Keyes; Ball of Fire (1942), starring Barbara Stanwyck & Cary Cooper; Double Indemnity (1944), starring Barbara Stanwyck, Fred MacMurray & Edward G Robinson; Key Largo (1948); starring Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Edward G Robinson, Claire Trevor, & Lionel Barrymore; All The King's Men (1948), starring Broderick Crawford, John Ireland, Joanne Dru, & Mercedes McCambridge; Pinky (1949), starring Jeanne Crain, Ethel Waters, Ethel Barrymore, Nina Mae McKinney, & Wiliam Lundigan; Marty (1955); starring Ernest Borgnine. The 26th episode of the Great American Novel Podcast delves into Carson McCullers' 1940 debut novel The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter. Published when the author was only 23, the novel tells the tale of a variety of misfits who don't seem to belong in their small milltown in depression-era, 1930s Georgia.  Tackling race, disability, sexuality, classism, socialism, the novel catapulted McCullers to fame.  It's been an Oprah book and it's been adapted to film.  The Modern Library chose it for its list of 100 best novels in English of the 20th Century.  But the question asked by your intrepid hosts is this: is it truly a great American novel? The Great American Novel podcast is an ongoing discussion about the novels we hold up as significant achievements in our American literary culture.  Additionally, we sometimes suggest novels who should break into the sometimes problematical canon and at other times we'll suggest books which can be dropped from such lofty consideration.  Your hosts are Kirk Curnutt and Scott Yarbrough, professors with little time and less sense who nonetheless enjoy a good book banter.  All opinions are their own and do not reflect the points of view of their employers, publishers, relatives, pets, or accountants. Intro and outro music is by Lobo Loco.  The intro song is “Old Ralley,” and the outro is “Inspector Invisible.”  For more information visit: https://locolobomusic.com/.  Clip from the trailer for the 1968 film The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, directed by Robert Ellis Miller, with lines spoken by Sondra Locke. We may be contacted at greatamericannovelpodcast (@) gmail.com.

8 more 70's movie reviews in the can. Starting things off today with (Billy Jack 1971). This is a sequel to a 1967 film called Born Losers, and it is just out of our reach for us. Here is a movie written by the 2 stars in the film and directed by BJ himself. Seems like a real labor of love, and it's pretty great and we'll tell ya'll about it very shortly, or we already are and your reading while your listening, how can you do that? Before we move on BJ is a film about a safe haven and school for outcasts and people of color, where close minded murderous Hicks are just outside the border, waiting to be racist and horrible to the max, I do hope someone has amazing fighting skills hmmm. One more thing, Howard Hesseman……..Johnny Flippin Fever from WKRP is HERE in this film, however, we suck and said it was Venus Flytrap, sorry bout that  icky rookie mistake, Venus was played by the amazing Tim Reid and he is not in this film. Moving on to (Duck, you sucker 1971) Here we have the awful man who will soon have no friends from Happy birthday Wanda June (Rod Steiger), and the gross reporter guy from Goldengirl, (James Coburn), starring in this film about how to become heroes in the Mexican revolution. Hmmmmmm, your gonna need an explosives expert. Next up is (The Outside Man 1972) which stars a focused French guy, the guy that wants the beaches closed and doesn't care about yer concession sales,  the amazing Ann flippin Margaret, and Angie (dressed to kill) Dickinson. Here is a movie with the idea of action, with out a lot of it, 70's style.  You get to see massive amounts of driving round L.A. You can see the old Venice amusement pier, some of the weird street characters, and one thing we wanted to mention but spaced it, was the appearance of public electric shaver in a bathroom, which seems unsanitary, hey, I gots time let's look it up….Time has passed, and the internet has failed me, or perhaps my use of it has failed. (Badge 373 1973)  Verna Bloom, star of a western we all liked, The Hired Hand, is here with Robert Duvall, Henry Darrow, and Radical 60's n 70's activist and Young Lord Felipe Luciano. Here we have some competing actors and the inspirational Felipe, kinda stuck in some budget cop movie, based on the guy whose budget cop stories also inspired the French connection character of Popeye D. Onward we strut to the light and uplifting Ingmar Bergman classic (Scenes from a Marriage 1974), almost too heavy to get into, but I don't really have to, I'll  just skim that surface for you and move on. You've got amazing acting, directing, and cinematography, a good script etc. I wonder what could ever go wrong with a film focused on and icky relationship, through the years. He is horrid to the max, and it is worthwhile to examine relationships and the social norms and conditioning that live inside them. Gosh it was just difficult for your beloved D.U.I. crew to get through. Come with us now to 1975 with (Rancho Deluxe). Rancho Deluxe, is the Slim Pickens holy grail that I didn't even know I was looking for. Now, you have other stuff goin on here, like  Starman (Jeff Bridges) and the dad from Serial Mom (Sam Waterson) are trying to pay rent and piss off a bull baron guy, although Bridges is slumming it, so to speak. Also serial mom's dad's Dad is played by Joe Spinell and he steals the dang show for the scene he's in. Lot's of good talent here, but is it good, or great, listen to find out? Second to last today we review (Outlaw Josey Wales 1976) a puzzling film directed by Clint Eastwood starring Sondra Locke, and Chief mother flippin Dan George, that's it. Finally today we enjoy (Corevette Summer 1978) “It's not even his car, it belongs to the school, It's not even your car!!” This film has Mary Jo Shively from designing woman, and Luke Skywalker from Star Wars  confronting the guy from Laser Blast to return the schools hot rod, back to the school. An enigmatic sex symbol dating back to the 70s, Theresa Russell made a play for Hollywood stardom in the late 80s and early 90s, making a number of films about the sexual commodification and role playing. Ken Russell's Whore was marketed as a gritty answer to Pretty Woman, showing the “truth” about Los Angeles street prostitution. In Impulse, a neo-noir romance in which Russell plays an undercover cop posing as a sex working in a hopelessly corrupt LAPD, Russell was directed by Sondra Locke, longtime girlfriend and co-star of Clint Eastwood. Duncan and Lex have known each other for years, and when it comes to movie taste, they think they know each other pretty well. Didn't I Blow Your Mind This Time puts them to the test. Each episode one picks a film that the other hasn't seen in the hopes of blowing their mind. It's time for Lex's first pick and he drops The Gauntlet on Duncan. Directed by (and starring) Clint Eastwood, this is oft-overlooked hunk of action is thin on story and heavy on vibe. Prelude to the absurd Every Which Way But Loose and Any Which Way You Can franchise (yep, the orangutan movies), this so-'70s cop-on-a-mission story also stars longtime lover and collaborator Sondra Locke. The chemistry crackles, but is it enough to blow Duncan's mind? And will Lex's rep make it through the gauntlet?Buckle up and armor up the bus 'cause bullets will fly. Hosted on Acast. Arguably their favourite episode of the main show since the last Retrospective episode looking at different versions of Beauty & The Beast, Morgan and Jeannine kick off their October of Horror on this show with masses of killer rats and one rather hilariously sweet Michael Jackson song as they take a look at the Willard movies: WILLARD (1971) starring Bruce Davison, Ernest Borgnine, Elsa Lanchester & Sondra Locke; BEN (1972), its direct sequel putting more chaotic focus on the central leader of the rats; and the remake of the first movie, WILLARD (2003) starring Crispin Glover in the title role!

S3 E13 SUDDEN HEARTBREAK TRIGGER WARNING:  One of the films covered in this episode, Sudden Impact, has a major plot point concerning sexual assault.  1983's Dirty Harry epic SUDDEN IMPACT, is Eastwood's only film in the series as director. Made after personal project Honkytonk Man (S3 E12) in 1982, Clint is in clear "one for them, one for me" mode here, casting Sondra Locke (her 6th and final Eastwood film) as a vengeful woman whose tactics are not dissimilar to Harry's. But they are illegal. But if they are, then aren't his? Potentially intriguing themes but is Locke the key that makes it work or is there a reason they never made a movie together again? This is the most financially successful Dirty Harry movie ever. Good, right?  "Go ahead, make my day," is one of the top five most memorable quotes in film history, according to this one poll on the internet we saw! The Enforcer (S3 E2) was supposed to be Clint's final Dirty Harry movie, having ended with Harry walking off, once again, after the system being a failure (also once again). A few tough breaks at the box office (Bronco Billy, Honkytonk Man) along with smaller films Clint needed studio backing for and he was pulled back in to the old shoulder holster (and banked a reported THIRTY MILLION for his efforts). For good or nah? The Dead Pool (S3 E12) would follow and end the Dirty Harry series five years later.1986's Heartbreak Ridge ends (spoiler) with the invasion of Grenada. Clint plays a guy named Thomas Highway. He trains a group of ragtag marine youths - RECON!! - with discipline problems. Does he get them ready to invade Grenada? What's Clint getting at with this odd little character piece, anyway? It's either boldly enigmatic and unknowable or... something else. Mario Van Peebles plays the ultimate 80s supporting character: Stitch Jones, the Marine Recon rock and roll front man who sings, among other classics, "I love you (but I ain't stupid)." American Hero and Iraq veteran Larry returns to help us figure it all out and see what Ridge got right and got wrong. DISASTER IN THE STUDIO: As resident plot recapper, who keeps every episode nominally moving, Ken takes copious notes when watching every Eastwood movie to use when recapping plots when we record. KEN LOST HIS NOTEBOOK SHORTLY BEFORE RECORDING THIS EPISODE! Can the crew survive without his notes? He has no idea who the heck is in these movies! Will we even know what movie we are talking about?SUDDEN IMPACT 00:03:02HEARTBREAK RIDGE 00:49:13

The Good, The Pod and The Ugly

S3 E10 HORNY PINK APE. Buddy Van Horn was a legendary stuntman (doubled for Eastwood numerous times) and stunt coordinator (Million Dollar Baby, baby!) but he also directed what may be the least essential of films in Eastwood's 65 year filmography. This week we coincidentally get two of those films, 1980's ANY WHICH WAY YOU CAN and 1989's PINK CADILLAC. Any Which Way You Can brings the whole gang back from Every Which Way But Loose and sets them on another comedic adventure not at all dissimilar to the first one except maybe with even less on its mind. Clyde is in it so you know what's what. Enjoy as Jack, who slept through 90% of this movie, clearly thinks Ken is making up the plot up as they go along. But, nope, there is some weird stuff in this thing. Also there is a lot of camera punching. We love Clint punching the camera. Where is THAT supercut, YouTube? Then marvel at the sizzling hot synopsis of the never-made third Which Way film, Either Which Way You Go, which would have also been directed by Van Horn in '85 had Ruth Gordon not sadly passed away. Pink Cadillac, on the other hand, is not dissimilar to podcast not-fave The Gauntlet, right down to the Nevada setting.  A comedy-adventure about a mismatched couple with a group of bad guys trying to get them. But Caddy has Bernadette Peters instead of Sondra Locke. There is that. Who doesn't like Bernadette Peters? Simply adorable and an American icon! Is that enough to keep things afloat? What is the signature Buddy Van Horn shot, anyway? Find out in this episode! Ken and Jack are joined by NO ONE this episode because we couldn't find any guests who wanted to sit through these two cinematic sensations.  ANY WHICH WAY YOU CAN 00:03:12EITHER WHICH WAY YOU GO 00:35:25PINK CADILLAC 00:41:48

S3 E9 WHITE BRONCO, BILLY'S HEARTOne of Clint's most ambitious films prior to Unforgiven,  1990's WHITE HUNTER, BLACK HEART is covered here in detail.  A roman a clef about John Huston prepping The African Queen, toxic masculinity, white imperialism, and malignant narcissism all fuel Eastwood's studied take on Huston's patrician airs. Jeff Fahey appears as foil to Clint's destructive spiral in trying to bag an Elephant. Possibly Clint's most daring role as an actor his entire career. Is his aim true or is he gored by hubris?1980's Bronco Billy was a gentle turn from Eastwood's until-then screen persona of cynical loner tough guy. Here he plays a... well, a loner tough guy, yeah, granted, but NOT a cynic. He plays the title role - a captain or king or head ramrod - of a band of misfits putting on western shows in Idaho/Montana. It collects so many actors from Eastwood's 70's output it is as close to The Avengers as Clint will ever get. Co-star/paramour Sondra Locke's performance does the film few favors, but it remains well-regarded by most Eastwood enthusiasts. But who cares about them? WHAT DO WE THINK? We are joined by podcast fave Thomas to get to it.A few major disagreements this episode. S3 E3 A PERFECT, BULLET-RIDDEN GAUNTLET. 1977's The Gauntlet is the first vehicle specifically for Clint and then-muse, Sondra Locke. She was nominated for an Oscar years prior and Eastwood claimed she would be again for this film. Was she? The Gauntlet is a road movie with a mismatched couple who start off not liking each other but... through adversity somehow find love. Also 16,000 bullets are fired in this movie. That is a lot and no one seems to be able to hit a tire on a moving bus. The Gauntlet was also Clint's directorial follow-up to the masterpiece Outlaw Josey Wales after letting someone else direct 1976's The Enforcer. Clint's follow-up directorial effort following his masterpiece Unforgiven (after taking a victory lap with someone else directing for In The Line of Fire) is 1993's A Perfect World, a road movie featuring Kevin Costner on the run with a little kid in tow while Clint, Jurassic Park and West Wing guy are in pursuit in 1963. Following In The Line of Fire, this is the second consecutive 1993 Eastwood film in which 1963 plays an integral role - a fact only interesting to a select few. S3 E1 ABSOLUTE PRESIDENT OUTLAW. Clint Eastwood's Outlaw Josey Wales, 1976,  inspired The Eastwood Rule in the DGA. What is it? Why is it? Does it limit squints per film? Generally considered Clint's first masterpiece as director, Wales also features the first of six pairings with Sondra Locke, whose contentious offscreen relationship with him will form a behind-the-scenes story that will stretch well into 1996. We will be covering the other five films later this season.  This is pretty much the Sondra Locke season. You have been warned. Then 1997's ABSOLUTE POWER reunites Clint with Gene Hackman, who plays a president who seeks to wield... well, it's in the title. Clint plays a hamburglar who comes for a Big Mac but leaves with a whole mess of trouble! This is the first of two movies Clint would release in 1997, the second is the execrable Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, as covered in our S2 finale. Clint had a busy time off-camera and kept his film crew family working so it's hard to get too angry at his '97 output. Unless you had to sit through them, anyway. We're bar room buddies and that's the best kiiiiiiiiiiind! Leah introduces Lindsey to Bronco Billy, an 80s classic starring Clint Eastwood, Sondra Locke, and Scatman Crothers. This film has everything: cowboys and cowgirls, a modern-day train robbery (!), a performance from Merle Haggard & the Strangers, and one of the best bar room brawls ever. Lindsey points out all the ways this film hasn't aged well, and we ask ourselves: Is Clint Eastwood a gross person?
