The Bad Roman
What is Christian Zionism? Its Origins and Implications with Stephen Sizer

The Bad Roman

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 16, 2025 57:55

What if the teachings of Christ were at odds with the political movements some Christians support? In this thought-provoking episode of The Bad Roman Podcast, host Craig Harguess welcomes Stephen Sizer, a retired minister and expert on Christian Zionism, to explore this very question. Together, they unpack the complex history and theological misconceptions surrounding Christian Zionism, a movement that often uncritically backs policies in the Nation State of Israel. Key Topics: Defining Christian Zionism: Discover how this political movement, driven by Christians, predates Jewish Zionism and often contradicts Christ's teachings. Personal Journey: Reverend Sizer shares his transformation from a conservative evangelical to a critic of Christian Zionism, inspired by his deep dive into biblical history and geography. Biblical Interpretation: Challenge the common view of modern Israel as biblical Israel. Sizer argues that scripture defines Israel as a community of faith, not a nation-state. The Good Samaritan Parable: Gain a fresh perspective on this timeless story, emphasizing compassion for all, regardless of identity. Facing Criticism: Learn about the backlash Stephen has faced for his views and how it has only strengthened his resolve to challenge what he sees as the heresy of Christian Zionism. Notable Quotes: "Christian Zionism is a political form of what they see as love for Jewish people, philosemitism. But in reality, it's today a movement that uncritically endorses the worst excesses of the Israeli regime." - Stephen Sizer "The best defense is a good neighbor. But building walls and killing people in the surrounding nations is not the way to win friends. It's not the way to bring peace." - Stephen Sizer "The question is, are you going to stop or not? Not for one of ours or not even for one of theirs, but for a human being." - Stephen Sizer Join us for a compelling discussion that challenges conventional beliefs and encourages a more Christ-like approach to the Middle East and Israel's Occupation of Palestine. Today we take on the oh so easy but maybe complex issues of Christian Nationalism, the Israel-Hamas war, and the role of faith in shaping political and social views. We explore the varied opinions within the Christian community in the U.S. regarding the conflict, highlighting the tension between those supporting either side and those striving for peace. The conversation delves into the biblical justifications used by some Christians to support Israel, critiques extreme adherence to prophecy, and discusses the importance of compassion and understanding in interfaith relations. Key points include the impact of the conflict on Jewish-Muslim relations, the importance of not generalizing groups of people, and the power of personal connection and kindness in overcoming prejudice and promoting peace. 00:00 Introduction: A Breath of Fresh Air 00:31 Exploring Christian Nationalism and the Israel-Hamas Conflict 01:02 The Christian Dilemma: Supporting Israel, Palestine, or Peace? 03:31 The Influence of Prophecy on Christian Support for Israel 07:45 Personal Stories and the Power of Empathy 08:21 The Importance of Losing to Win: A Christian Perspective 08:26 God Talk Friday: Reflecting on Faith and Conflict 14:51 The Bedouin Tradition: A Lesson in Hospitality and Peace 16:25 Conclusion: The Challenge of Embracing Both Sides From the sidelines, some Christians in US strive to be peacemakers as Israel-Hamas war continues smarticlepodcast@gmail.com # palestinianisraeliconflict #christiannationalism #propheticevangelicals #theholyland #spiritual #faith #godtok #faithtalk #realfaith #smarticlepodcast #podcast #smarticle @dailymeditations @Smarticleshow @BDDoble @larryolson threads.net/@smarticleshow @brand.dobes The Center for Action and Contemplation  The Smarticle Podcast

In this episode of Truthspresso Express I chat about Jesus and socialism while driving to work.A coworker recently made the claim to me that Jesus was a socialist. I have certainly heard this claim before, but I figured I would address it.In part 5 I look at another of the socialist's prooftexts: the account of Zacchaeus. An article I read from a progressive Christian claims that Zacchaeus "got woke." Does Zacchaeus' salvation teach "woke" socialism?I also observe four points from this story:Zacchaeus was a tax collector for a wicked government. His profiteering wasn't free market capitalism.Zacchaeus' conversion was different from what Jesus instructed for the rich young ruler.Zacchaeus didn't give away all his wealth or abandon his house.Jesus immediately taught the anti-socialistic parable of the nobleman's pounds to this same audience.Sources Consulted:Chuck McKnight, "Jesus Was a Socialist," Patheos, March 11, 2019.Herb Montgomery, "Zacchaeus and Christian Support of Destructive Administrations," Patheos, February 14, 2020.V.R.
