The Ghost Furnace -Episode 104 "Two Taverns" On this episode we look at two historically interesting locations in the city of brotherly love. Both the City Tavern and The General Wayne have wild stories, even without all the ghosts. Some of the stories which come out of these places reflect the hundreds of years of history that we don't often see in public/commercial locations in the states. Here is the City Tavern photo we reference: reddit.com/r/Paranormal/comments/164ndnr/historic_tavern_in_philadelphia_while_on_a_night/ Please check out our, now award winning, episode on Hemlocks to Hellbenders If you have a story you'd like to share, find us on Instagram, Facebook, Youtube or TheGhostFurnacePodcast@gmail.com

Send us a Text Message. The decade of the 1920s is often referred to as the “Roaring Twenties.” You can probably picture it now: jazz trumpets blare while women in shiny dresses dance the Charleston with their beaus and sip fancy martinis. It's fast, it's loud, it's fun, it's one big party, like New Years Eve every night. Night clubs, cocktails, rock and roll, all of these cultural staples evolved out of the roaring twenties. But take the alcohol away and, I'm not sure they would have roared quite as loudly. Surprisingly, the twenties took place during a 13 year period in the United States known as prohibition, when the manufacture, transport, and sale of alcoholic beverages was illegal. Despite this, Americans went to great lengths to keep the party roaring. The government had its work cut out for it to enforce this new ban on alcohol. But, did you know, they took that enforcement so seriously, it resulted in the deaths of over 10,000 Americans? Let's fix that. Philadelphia is considered to be one of the most haunted cities in America. It makes sense, right? This city is old! And there's a new book that chronicles some of Philly's haunted past. It's called “Haunted History of Philadelphia” by Josh Hitchens, an author and longtime tour guide with Ghost Tours of Philadelphia. For Halloween, Hitchens shares some ghost stories with City Cast Philly host Trenae Nuri, including the legend of City Tavern, one of Philadelphia's oldest haunted restaurants. This month's episode with The Kankakee County Museum takes back in time to when Nell Clark ruled Kankakee's underworld. For about 50 years, from the 1890s to the 1940s, Nell ran a brothel in what is now City Tavern on 367 South West Avenue in Kankakee. Local renowned storyteller, Jack Klasey, explains to us why Nell's story is so notorious. On another note, The Kankakee County Museum's 32nd Annual Rhubarb Festival is coming up on Sunday, May 22nd from 10:00am to 4:00pm! Kankakee Podcast will have a booth set up to record your own 10 minute podcast on whatever you'd like to talk about. We will also have podcast merchandise for sale as well. Kicking off Fright Month this year, we're looking into the historic City Tavern here in Philadelphia. A location that has some rich history both within the city of Philadelphia and within the history and birth of the United States. However, now it seems that some of the Tavern's old occupants are still lingering around long after their era. Now spirits seem to be a staple of the City Tavern, similar to many locations that can be found in the surrounding area. Locations that shall be focused in on with future episodes during Fright Month. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Email: realmofunknown@gmail.com Twitter: @RealmOfUnknown Instagram: @realmofunknown - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - If you enjoy this content, consider supporting the podcast, to help with future episodes and production. anchor.fm/realmofunknown/support Intro and Outro music is created by Creepy Regrets by AnMo --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/realmofunknown/message

A little-known clerk inscribes the parchment we all know. Franklin urges unanimity in supporting the Constitution and proposes a convenient form of signing, but Randolph, Gerry, and Mason aren’t impressed. Washington speaks up for a more representative House, and a final alteration is made. The delegates sign, with three holdouts. Franklin has the last word and speaks of a rising, not setting, sun. The delegates gather one last time at City Tavern.
Mason seeks a few hours to add a Bill of Rights. The delegates reject the idea, but regret it later. Everyone ends up with a different understanding of the commerce clause. The delegates have a raucous party at the City Tavern, rally the next morning for a long day, agree to ban domestic emoluments, settle on the President’s pardon power, and decide not to do this again. The Patterson team discusses the tonnage clause and whether a President can pardon himself.

Summer vacation is over and Solid Cat is back to tell you what we did on ours. Stand back, this is actually the first half of a two part episode. First, D-mo is now and old man. In the News, we discuss a real life version of the Pina Colada song. For those that were wondering, yes, D-mo passed the stone. Wait... coyotes? Vermont is very beautiful and very green. The Musuem of the Creative Process creeped us out to no end, and we didn't even go in it. On our culinary tour of the eastern United States, we enjoyed cheesecake from the Nuns of New Skete, delicious cuisine at the City Tavern in Philly, and an absolutely delightful Italian place called Joe Benny's in Baltimore (go there; trust us). There were some questionable "Jersey-style" Whoppers at a Burger King. But we finally settle the debate on Philly's best cheesesteak... Pat's or Geno's (or do we?). There was also, what Val called, the "Taj Mahal of bathrooms." And we wrap with a wonderful Paws Up highlighting the spirit of second chances. We packed some much, we had to split up our tale, so enjoy Part 1, today, of Solid Cat.

Our best field trip ever! We visit the historic City Tavern. When the delegates to the Constitutional Convention gathered in Philadelphia in May, 1787, there were no modern hotels. They stayed at boarding houses or private homes, and they ate (and drank) in taverns. The most prominent of those was the City Tavern, which has been authentically re-built so that that you can go and eat (and drink) the same way that the delegates did. It is easily the most enjoyable historical research we have ever done. Join us! Huzzah!
