I am delighted to have Dr. Claudia Welch joining me as my guest on the podcast today.Shifting Focus on Women's HealthThe conversation on women's health initially focused on external factors. However, there is currently more awareness of the importance of internal nourishment and rest. Rest and nourishment are crucial for maintaining balance with all the external distractions that draw our attention outward. Nurturing inner stability creates ripples of positivity, much like the various cycles of nature. Inner Attention Versus External FocusWe need to focus on our internal motivations rather than our external actions. While actions like cooking or caregiving may seem nourishing, the internal mindset driving those actions is what truly matters. In Ayurveda, nurturing our inner world is essential as it helps reduce the impact of fears and external seductions, allowing for more balanced and grounded lives.Shifting Interests in HealthOver time, there has been a shift from focusing on the biological details of health, like hormones, to a broader view of how people live their lives. According to Eastern philosophy, health imbalances stem from internal belief systems, fears, and seductions. That is why we need to address the root causes of those imbalances rather than focusing on biological symptoms for lasting health.Hormone Management: HRT vs. Bioidentical HormonesClaudia emphasizes the benefits of bioidentical hormones over traditional hormone replacement therapy (HRT), explaining that while lifestyle, diet, and herbal remedies can help with menopausal symptoms like hot flashes and insomnia, they may not offer immediate relief for those with a history of poor health habits. Even though those symptoms are not life-threatening, the stress they cause can have long-term health impacts. If bioidentical hormones are inaccessible, HRT might be an acceptable alternative despite the associated risks. The Uncertainty of Medical ScienceClaudia is skeptical about overly confident medical opinions and encourages everyone to be cautious and self-aware when using hormone therapy. In the decades she spent studying hormones, she learned that there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Stress and Hormonal Imbalance in MidlifeStress, especially during midlife, significantly impacts our hormonal balance. The emotional challenges many women face in their late 40s and 50s, like the fear of aging and death, can amplify stress. The demands of caring for children and aging parents often worsen these hormonal imbalances.Confronting the Fear of DeathReflecting on a personal experience in India, Claudia once believed she did not fear death. However, she felt afraid when she faced the possibility of dying from hepatitis. She feels it is essential for us to intentionally engage with the concept of death as a natural part of life. The Practice of Dying DailyClaudia has come to embrace the idea of dying daily, a practice from various spiritual traditions. That means we need to let go of our professional, personal, or emotional attachments if we want to learn about the impermanence of life. By surrendering to that process, we can reduce our fear of death while supporting our hormonal health.Embracing Loss and Personal TransformationLetting go means accepting that we cannot control everything. As we age, we must make peace with the inevitable losses we will face. Even though the void our losses leave can feel overwhelming, it ultimately leads to transformation and growth.Menopause Support and Facing MortalityClaudia created the Menopause Chronicles, a community to support one another and share experiences for women navigating menopause. She is also excited to...

While in the legal profession, Noreen held a number of leadership positions including serving as President of the Connecticut Chapter of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys. Curious about why so many of her clients were succumbing to chronic health conditions, causing themselves and their families undue stress, Noreen turned her focus in 2008 to the natural healing arts. A longtime student of yoga (currently, over 25 years), she completed her yoga teacher training at the Sivananda Ashram Bahamas (200 hr. For ten years, Noreen pursued her passion for natural foods as a chef (mostly plant-based), events planner, writer and editor, public policy advocate, and health and culinary educator – bringing her travel and work from coast to coast. The Pandemic brought Noreen full-circle to Ayurveda as she is currently enrolled in a 3-year Master's Degree program in Ayurveda and Integrative Medicine at Maharishi International University and is serving as U.S. Admissions Counselor for the University with a focus on its graduate academic programs in Ayurveda. Lisa felt adrift when an early menopause made itself known in her life at the age of only 41. In our conversation she shared what a lonely place it was to be in, that came with a feeling of disempowerment. The turning point for her came whilst sharing her story in a women's circle, something she wasn't keen on doing at the time but later came to know the absolute value of sharing your story with others. In the circle she met a woman called Diane Danzebrink author of ‘Make Menopause Matter' and that opened up a whole new vista of understanding for her. She was more than happy to share her story again here on Lady Time. After holding over 50 Textures of Yoga, chakra and mudra based workshops, both in person and online, Lisa has designed a soon to be launched online meditation course called Textures of You. This is a compilation of her most valuable practices together with guided meditations inspired by Quiet Evenings, a series of weekly meditations she co-hosted with Elena Santos in Elena's beautiful art studio, Just Art It. Her yoga journey began briefly in her 20s and then again at the age of 37 which has continued to develop and deepen into the practice and teachings she shares to this day. She shares from the depth of her own sustained practice, her studentship in the philosophies of Yoga, namely Patanjali's 8 limbed path, The Upanishads and the Hatha Pradipika. With over 14 years of consistent studentship and 9 years of teaching, Lisa offers classes that encourage students to be curious and investigate what they think they know about themselves and to cultivate compassion for what they discover. Uncertainty can be hard to deal with. Not knowing where you're headed and what's in store can make us feel like we need to do something to exert control over our experience, but sometimes there's simply nothing we can do but wait. Wait to see what happens; wait to see what's coming; wait to see what guidance, inspiration, and truth we may find along the way. In Episode 21, Brodie talks with her sister, Dr. Claudia Welch, DOM, about the feeling of being amid change, and finding ways to be comfortable as reality is shifting around us.   In this episode, we explore: The layer of our being: the koshas How do you figure out what is yours to do in times of great change? Sūtaka: a transitional time How can you soften the impact of uncertain times? How does Fall relate to letting go and times of uncertainty? “Unbecoming” our patterns Adjusting hopes, dreams, identities, and plans when we're in a state of flux Finding truth in the midst of information/media overload The importance of internal stabilization during unstable times Discerning between stable and unstable times   Resources:  Dr. Claudia Welch's website
