Jenny Brown and Mark Mirchandani are back this week to celebrate a special anniversary! This year marks ten years since the launch of the first Chromebooks, and our guests, Angela Gosz and Courtney Harrison, are here to reflect on the past and talk about the future Chrome OS. Chromebooks powered by Intel allow users to get the most out of their endpoints, serving as a secure and stable entrypoint to the Cloud. Our guests describe the key groups of Chromebook users and how the security, ease of use, and portability of Chrome OS benefits each group. The Google Admin Console allows more than 500 customizable security features to tailor the experience for employees or end customers, Angela explains. The changes brought on by the pandemic meant more companies had to support a distributed business, and Chrome OS has been able to facilitate this transition easily. With zero-touch enrollment, Chromebooks can be sent directly to employees, bypassing IT. Chromebooks can be configured through the Google Admin Console without any physical contact. Courtney tells us about her experiences with Chrome OS at Intel and how the automatic updates, computing speed, and other features have made her job easier. She explains the process of working with Google to develop Chromebook hardware and how the cloud comes into play for maximum performance. We talk about the many Chromebook options offered and what options will be available in the future. Angela Gosz Angela Gosz is a Customer Success Manager on the Chrome Enterprise Team, based out of Google Chicago. With 17 years of experience in the IT Industry, Angela has been on the leading edge of digital transformation implementations, supporting Enterprise organizations and partners to adopt and optimize their endpoint computing strategy - especially in Healthcare. Today she ensures customers realize the full potential of their investment in Chrome OS as a cloud-first endpoint. Outside of work, she has been meditating daily for 5 years, teaches yoga and is a certified Reiki practitioner. Angela holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Courtney Harrison Courtney is an Account Director with Intel Corporation based in the San Francisco Bay area. Currently Courtney leads a team that supports all of the Intel business interactions with Alphabet and Google. A twenty-one year Intel veteran, Courtney has spent the past fifteen years in field sales working with top multi-national customers and local OEMs. Courtney began her career at Intel in CPU operations. Courtney has both a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree from Stanford University in Industrial Engineering. Intro Randy talks about which computer may best suit your back-to-school student. • Before reading any of my tips, you could start of simply by looking on YouTube for used computer performance (something like "Surface Pro 3 in 2020"…"Late 2012 iMac in 2020") and just watch people using them before you dish out the money. These videos are great, quick measure. • Older Imacs - 2011, 27" iMac - A lot of these, can go up to 16GB RAM - Such as this Mac I'm using. You'll have less trouble in the long run if you just get a 2012 or newer, because they'll typically run MacOS Catalina just fine. ○ 500GB SSD For Probably $100 - 16GB RAM for probably less than $100 DDR3 - I'm not going to reference any particular video because there are tons out there. Just beware of people overpricing the machines on either Facebook Market place or Craigslist. A good place to get an idea on a fair price is eBay. § What I do on Ebay, is I search for the machine, I then check the "Buy it now" box in the left navigation area, then I sort from Lowest to highest. • Lenovo Desktops, particularly the M73/M700's from 4+ years ago, are tanks. The reason I know this is because we've used them in customer care cents for 5 years, running and they have NEVER failed. Buy one of these used offline, replace the HDD with an SSD, add some RAM and it'll run like a brand new machine - Plenty fast enough for school work. I just plugged in a search on eBay and can see you can snag an M700 for $250. Comparing the speed to a Mac for that price, the PC will SMOKE it. • Chromebook - This is something you could actually "make" on your own. You can buy a Windows 10 PC (which I highly-recommend) and then just install something like CloudReady over top of windows 10. are plenty of videos on YouTube that show you how to accomplish this. ○ The reason I suggest just buying a Windows 10 machine because you'll have your Windows 10 license on that computer, so when you realize that Chromebooks are more limited than a full-fledged OS like Windows or MacOs, you can always good back and forth. Chromebooks are great for what they're made for though, doing things in the browser, which is plenty for most people. § Something to look for if you already have a Chromebook, is to see if it's already "managed". If you're on a Chromebook, click the time at the bottom right, and look for a "managed device" icon…if it's there, this means that the Chromebook is likely controlled by an organization or school/workplace, which simply allows them to restrict you from using certain apps or features and monitor what you are doing. Maybe check if this is something required by your school district. If you're using your own computer, browser, you're likely the only person "managing" it. § This "management" doesn't necessarily apply only the Chromebooks, but company PCs as well. For example, if you're on a PC that is managed by your work place, you could even look within the Chrome browser itself, and click the "3 dots" at the top to open the Chrome menu. At the very bottom of that menu, you can see if your Organization is managing chrome on your computer. Again, if this is a computer that's managed/purchased by yourself, it's not likely someone else is managing it. Closing Remarks I'd like to thank you for putting time aside to listen to the podcast. Welcome to episode 187 ("Embrace CloudReady in Our Pandemic") of the EdTech Situation Room from August 12, 2020, where technology news meets educational analysis. This week Jason Neiffer (@techsavvyteach) and Wesley Fryer (@wfryer) discussed Russia's announcement to skip phases 2 and 3 in rushed vaccine trial, Chromebook and device shipment delays for schools and individuals, and the wonders of Neverware's CloudReady software for running ChromeOS on older Intel-based computer hardware. Microsoft's new Surface Duo laptop, changes to Google Play Music, and screentime for kids (and adults) during the pandemic were also discussed. Additional topics included the limits of home connectivity bandwidth, the importance of "filtering the exoflood" of polluted information around us, and recent government initiated interruptions in Internet connectivity and social media platform access in Belarus following a contested election. Tips for upgrading a 2020 iMac, a recent webinar on "Know Your Power: Know Your Rights" (shared by Peggy George,) and Charter Telecom's push for residential Internet data caps with the FCC were also highlighted. We love unboxings, and we love product reviews. It's a great chance for us to show you what's up and coming (a 13-inch Raspberry Pi touch screen case) or what's been around a while but could benefit from a video review to really show you how it looks (water effect party lamp). We'll tackle these, plus some swag sent to the unofficial official spokeswoman of CloudReady. The Bald Nerd, CloudReady's official unofficial spokeswoman and the Ginja Ninja take a look at the Wyze Cam lineup, which makes smart home surveillance ultra-affordable. We'll also learn how to turn 4K video footage into multiple camera shots in CyberLink PowerDirector, and the results are mind blowing. Most of us have some old laptop or desktop computers kicking around. They seem useless because their OS is out of date, and the hardware isn't powerful enough to run the latest and greatest software. Enter CloudReady: a Chromium OS distribution that is built to run on your old (or new!) PC gear, and is free for personal use. So you may have thought about using NoSQL or a Document Database for taking care of you needs. But do you know why that might be not be a good (or a pretty bad idea?). Or you may have a Database that have been running fine, but it seems that you can't work with it anymore? (Is it time to move to NoSql? Would it help?). We dive into the "Why" would you choose Databases vs NoSQL Data Stores, or when to ditch your MongoDB and actually come back to MySQL. In our current time of "WebScale" and "CloudReady" we get bombarded by choices! (Mongo, Dynamo, MariaDB, ElasticSearch) and while some of the offerings are great, it might not mean that is the Right choice for what we need to store. So take a listen as we explore normalization and the strength and weaknesses of relational data vs unstructured data. Welcome to episode 106 of the EdTech Situation Room from September 5, 2018, where technology news meets educational analysis. This week Jason Neiffer (@techsavvyteach) and Wesley Fryer (@wfryer) reflected on the 20th anniversary of Google and the 10th anniversary of the Chrome web browser, and the long way we've come in the ensuing years. Other topics included "the technology correction" with an excellent article arguing for the breakup of Facebook based on current U.S. anti-trust law, proposed revisions to anti-trust law which could be applied to large technology companies including Facebook, Amazon, Google and Apple, and this week's Congressional testimony by technology leaders in Washington D.C. The ethical dimensions of corporate developed and sold spyware, the question of liability for developers when their spyware is used by governments against human rights advocates and political opponents, and the ongoing advocacy by Western governments for security "back doors" in technology platforms were also discussed. The threat posed by new European copyright laws to the open Internet, Apple's upcoming event on September 12th and leaks suggesting new iPhone models and a 4th generation Apple watch, and the success of the Google Pixelbook in sparking the availability of higher end Chromebooks rounded out the show's articles. Geeks of the Week included the GeoMap website and application Relive, and CloudReady by Neverware for breathing new Chrome life into older computers.
