A former Wall Street banker, Tsai shares how Cocokind has grown and evolved as a brand, including why they decided to stop referring to themselves as "clean" and sustainable. Sydney Morgan talks growing her TikTok following, dealing with her Ulcerative colitis diagnosis, and shares a stressful self-tape audition!About Sydney:Sydney Morgan is making the world a better place. At just 19-years old, she has already well-established herself as an Actress, Model, Make-Up Artist, and Digital Creator. Her vast digital footprint consists of over 7-Million TikTok followers, 1.6-Million Youtube subscribers, and too many viral videos to count showcasing her outrageous make-up creations. Most importantly though, Sydney is utilizing her platform for good: shining a spotlight on Crohn's & Colitis and the long-lasting impacts of chronic illnesses.Sydney has always had a creative soul, but truly fell in love with the art of make-up when she was in high school – while stuck in a hospital bed. In 2018 during Sydney's junior year of high school, she was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis. The chronic inflammatory bowel disease causes inflammation in the digestive tract. With no true cure for the disease, she spent a year in-and-out of the hospital trying different medications and treatments, but unfortunately nothing seemed to work. In October 2019, Sydney underwent emergency surgery to remove her entire colon (her whole large intestine). The result of the life-saving surgery caused Sydney to require an ostomy bag (a pouch that allows bodily waste to pass through a surgically created stoma on the abdomen). In September 2020, Sydney underwent final reconnection surgery – and is now as close to healed as possible when it comes to Ulcerative Colitis.Prior to her diagnosis, Sydney was a cheerleader, gymnast, and track-and-field athlete who dreamt of putting her athletic capabilities on display in college. In 2020, Sydney graduated high school and decided to take a gap year to heal from her recent surgeries. She took this time to lean into her artistic capabilities, and began posting make-up creations on Instagram, and later on sharing them toYoutube and TikTok. Her accounts quickly grew into the massive fanbase she holds today. But Sydney still makes it a point to use her platform to spread awareness of Crohn's & Colitis.Sydney doesn't let her illness define her or hold her back. Instead she uses her platform to spread awareness of chronic illness. Helping others going through similar hardships and ‘invisible disabilities,' while educating those who have not heard of the disease before. Sydney currently works with the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation, and actively helps local children's hospitals that specialize in pediatric treatment for chronic illnesses. With her sweet and creative spirit, it's no wonder why big name brands continue to knock on Sydney's door. She has collaborated with major brands such as: Amazon Prime Video, Sephora, Ulta, L'Oreal, Beauty Blender, Dermalogica, Cocokind, Kiehl's, Scentbird, Spirit Halloween, Gym Shark, Fab Fit Fun, Casetify, and many more.Sydney currently resides in Los Angeles, with roots in Pittsburgh, PA. In her free time, she enjoys staying active with weight lifting, hiking, running, and yoga. Hey hey friends! I'm sure you've heard the phrase “Hot Girl Summer,” but around here, we're having Smart Girl Summer. Smart Girl Summer is an eight week series featuring some of my most brilliant friends sharing behind-the-scenes stories that you won't hear anywhere else. And we're kicking it off with Hannah Brencher! Hannah is a best-selling author, speaker, and entrepreneur, and y'all have loved her episodes in the past. She is such a breath of fresh air when it comes to running a business, staying creative, and embracing God's plan for her life.  We dive into how she got her start, the lessons she learned from passion projects that didn't go as planned, how she manages imposter syndrome, and what she does when she feels herself beginning to play the comparison game. Listen in as we discuss:  The freedom that comes with giving yourself permission to try new things (and not be great at them!).  How we handle the reactions of church friends when they find out our husbands are both full-time Dads while each of us are the breadwinners for our families. What a good workflow looks like, and how they can help you reach the goals you set for yourself.   Favorite quotes: 1. I don't want people to be spectators in the lives of other people. I want them to be fully in their lives. 2. I spent so many years being so scared that I wasn't in the calling of God. And then I realized that's not how it works. Go out there, experiment, have fun with things. I would have never known that I could be an entrepreneur if I didn't give myself that permission.3. Just because it's been done this one way 1000 times before, doesn't mean that it's what you have to do.  4. Make sure you finish things as well as you start them. Don't let the momentum keep you from doing a good job from all angles.  5. Do the thing that scares you. 6. Invest in the craft instead of the applause.    Great things we discussed:  1. I Moisturize My Entire Body Now, Thanks To COVID

Bustle

Remember the massive productivity boom that came at the beginning of COVID? Everyone thought they'd finally write that novel/become fluent in a third language/master home cooking thanks to the endless stay-at-home orders. Much of the pressure to accomplish these highly ambitious goals fell by the wayside, but one positive habit I took up during quarantine actually has stuck: I now moisturize my entire body, not just the skin on my face. I've been a beauty editor for more than five years now, so I'm well aware that your skin is your largest organ and it's important to take care of all of it, not just your décolletage and above. Taking care of only the skin on your face is kind of like only washing your upper body in the shower — of course moisturizing isn't just for select parts of your bod. But I'm lazy. So when quarantine ambition levels reached their peaks in March and April, I gazed into my overcrowded beauty cabinet for inspo on how to up the ante on my self-care game (because social media told me to), and dozens of body care products, all covered in dust and hidden in the back, stared back at me. The bottles had been giving me the side eye whenever I reached for a (face) serum or (face) moisturizer for who knows how long. But the thing is, body care has been exploding over the past year or so. An ever-increasing chunk of beauty brands known for other categories have recently entered the space: Drunk Elephant, True Botanicals, Cocokind, and Versed are just a few examples. Not only that, but according to consumer data platform Influenster, customer reviews of body care products grew 140% year over year between 2019 and 2020. Clearly there's no shortage of options when it comes to lotions and creams to hydrate your limbs. Besides the saturated body care market, my skin is reason enough to begin giving TLC to the areas below my neck. Because of my laziness, my hands, arms, legs, and heels have slowly crumbled into flaky, itchy, dry-as-hell appendages due to their lack of moisture and nutrients — all while my face gets spoiled with layers upon layers of fancy products (twice a day, no less) and glows in all its glory. I only have the pandemic to thank for smoothing out this, uh, not-so-pretty disconnect between my face and my body. It all began one evening early in quarantine after showering. Hell-bent on leaving the bathroom glistening with moisture — #dolphinskin — I reached for my unopened The Body Serum from Nécessaire as my first layer. My limbs immediately slurped up the hydrating trio of hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and niacinamide, then begged me for more. To seal in the nourishing goodness, I applied the Mutha Body Butter all over, which contains various butters (like the OG, shea butter) and fatty acids to replenish the skin's barrier. I couldn't stop caressing my arms for the rest of the night: Why did I wait till my early thirties to start moisturizing my body? As the months flew by, I started to experiment with my body care regimen. I had a body oil phase (shoutout to Irene Forte Skincare's Rose Body Oil, which I completely drained), and went through so many creams — including Drunk Elephant's Sili Body Lotion, Sol de Janeiro's Brazilian Bum Bum Cream, and La Roche-Posay's Lipikar Balm. By now, I think I've brought my body skin back from the parched dead state it was in for so many years. My legs and arms haven't itched or been scaly for months; my hands, ravaged into dehydrated claws from sanitizer use, are creamy and baby-soft. If there's one teeny tiny silver lining to this year of horror, it's that my body is finally getting the TLC it deserves.

After years of using severe prescription acne treatments, Priscilla Tsai realized that traditional approaches to fighting skin concerns were unsustainable, unhealthy, and stigmatizing. Instead, she wanted to find a solution that would create long-term yet gentle results for her skin, mind, and body. After tackling her hormonal acne with superfoods instead of chemicals, she quite literally made her own solution and left her job on Wall Street. Cocokind was then born in 2015. In the episode, Priscilla shares why her struggle with acne from her teenage years to her early 20’s prompted her to start making her own skincare products, her experience with imposter syndrome and why she didn’t let it stop her from launching her skincare brand, which is now a multi-million dollar company, what it was like to leave behind her high-paying job on Wall Street and move to San Francisco to start bootstrapping Cocokind, why she says nurturing and loving up her customers and audience is the number one reason she’s been able to build such a trusted product line and profitable business, her top 3 pieces of advice for anyone starting a product-based business in the wellness industry (not what you might think!), the massive role old school marketing played in the first 2 years of business, and why she recommends making in-person relationship building a priority, and so much more!   To learn more about Priscilla Tsai and the resources mentioned in this episode, visit the show notes.   Follow Me On: Facebook Instagram

Madeline Haydon, the founder and CEO of non-dairy creamer brand Nutpods, isn’t fazed by the occasional negative review of her products. On the contrary, she welcomes all customer feedback, good or bad. It’s the follow up that matters. “You have to know you’re not going to get everyone and you have to be open to hearing what your customers really think about your product,” she said in an interview included in this episode. “We have very strict protocols with customer service because what I’m building is not just a brand; it’s an experience. And part of that experience is how you can turn someone who’s unhappy with your brand to say, ‘You know what? They have great customer service.’” That focus on high quality customer service has anchored nutpods’ thriving direct-to-consumer and ecommerce strategies and helped it become a top-selling brand on Amazon. As part of our interview, Haydon also discussed her foray into entrepreneurship and how she laid the groundwork for a successful online business via targeted outreach to consumers with specialized diets. Also in this episode: an interview with Nicole Cogan, the founder of Nobread, a popular social media brand focused on gluten-free lifestyles.
