170: The Shocking Truth About Dairy: Why are we *really* drinking milk?

Hi friends, happy Wednesday! As a country, America has always had a complicated relationship with dairy. One month we hate it, the next month, some weird cottage cheese recipe goes viral, and we're all over it again. But here's something I thought was a little strange. You never hear about dairy farmers or the dairy industry going bankrupt. It made me wonder why. Turns out… the dairy industry is in bed with the government.  Why? Because the government desperately needs them not to fail. And that's just the tip of the string cheese. We've been brainwashed into thinking we *need* dairy from the time we were kids. And there's a wild reason for that.   It involves Marie Antoinette, cheese caves, and… Dominoes? Guys… this is a wild one. And I'm not going to lie… you might think twice before ordering your next Taco Bell burrito.  Welcome to the Dark History of Big Dairy!  I appreciate you for coming by, and tune in next week for more Dark History. Big Dairy's impact on health and policy is udderly shocking. Michael Regilio milks the truth from this cash cow of an industry on Skeptical Sunday! Welcome to Skeptical Sunday, a special edition of The Jordan Harbinger Show where Jordan and a guest break down a topic that you may have never thought about, open things up, and debunk common misconceptions. This time around, we're joined by skeptic, comedian, and podcaster Michael Regilio! On This Week's Skeptical Sunday: Milk consumption by adults has not been natural for most of human history. About 65% of the global population has reduced ability to digest lactose, with some populations experiencing nearly 100% lactose intolerance. The dairy industry, with government support, has heavily promoted milk consumption despite questionable health benefits. This includes school milk programs and marketing campaigns like "Got Milk?" Raw milk can be dangerous, potentially causing diseases like typhoid and tuberculosis. Pasteurization made milk safer, but the dairy industry initially resisted it. The US government has repeatedly subsidized and bailed out the dairy industry, including buying surplus milk and cheese. This has led to an artificial inflation of the dairy market. Good news for the lactose averse: there are many alternative sources for the nutrients found in milk. People can obtain calcium from foods like almonds, figs, kale, tofu, and sweet potatoes. By exploring these options, people can make informed dietary choices that align with their health needs and preferences. Connect with Jordan on Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube. Milk is a liquid produced by mammals, and a plant, as I'm sure y'all realize, is not a mammal. Big Dairy is paying me to say that plant milks are HAHA just kidding. But the controversy around this nomenclature isn't new. In fact, twelve years ago…the FDA even issued a warning letter to Cytosport about the fact that their flagship protein supplement, Muscle Milk, contained no actual milk. Hold on though because this content is about to get really meta. PepsiCo just announced that it is bringing Muscle Milk into the plant-based category. And I got an early chance to try these Muscle Milk Plant Protein Shakes at the NACS Show. Growing up in South Africa to a family of activists and witnessing the devastating effects of apartheid, today's guest, Michael Schwarz, had his moral compass set to true north at an early age.    Driven by a profound sense of justice and a desire to combat the deleterious effects dairy has on our planet, he decided to step away from a 25-year career as an intellectual property lawyer and change the food industry by launching Treeline cheese – an independent vegan cheese company.    Michael also appeared in episode 76, where we learned all about his remarkable upbringing, the incredible work his father did as a defense attorney – including the trial of Nelson Mandela, where Michael's father defended Mandela's co-defendant and won – and how he made the transition from being a lawyer himself to a vegan cheese entrepreneur.   So if you're interested in learning what it's like to run a small vegan cheese company in an era where conglomerates want to take over the industry with cheap knockoffs – and powerful entities like the dairy lobby of Canada are after you – you definitely want to tune in!    “Is the division of Kraft that makes plant-based Philadelphia ever going to be on this show and try to talk against what's going on in the dairy farms and the slaughterhouses that Kraft is supplying, or that are supplying Kraft? That's never going to happen. And if vegan food is now in the control of these large nonvegan companies, they will stifle voices for animal rights.” - Michael Schwarz   What we discuss in this episode: - How the Canadian dairy lobby is trying to block Michael's trademark. - The threat vegan products pose to Big Dairy. - How meat and dairy conglomerates are hurting vegan brands and working to inhibit progress. - Tips for consumers to navigate making purchases that align with their ethics.  - How Michael makes Treeline cheeses more environmentally friendly. - Why it's important to support smaller vegan brands. - Treeline's delicious new products and plans for the future.    Resources: - Treeline Cheese: https://www.treelinecheese.com/ - Switch4Good podcast episode 76: Ethics + Business with Treeline Cheese Founder Michael Schwarz - Switch4Good - Steven Colbert clip   ★☆★ Click the link below to support the ADD SOY Act! https://switch4good.org/add-soy-act/ ★☆★ Share the website and get your resources here https://kidsandmilk.org/ ★☆★ Send us a voice message and ask a question. Debunking the Myths Against Soy | Episode 62

The Animal Wellness Podcast

Animal Wellness Action is one of many organizations pushing for Congress to pass the ADD SOY Act, a bill that would require the USDA to make soy milk available as a beverage alternative to the 30 million children who are part of the National School Lunch Program.   Every year, about $300 million in cow milk is tossed into the garbage—much of it still in unopened containers—by children who don't like the taste of it or, owing to lactose intolerance, cannot drink without suffering cramps, bloating, diarrhea, vomiting and more. But unless a school puts two cartons of milk on the tray, the school will not be reimbursed for the cost of the meal.   It's bad for kids. It's bad for taxpayers. And it makes a mockery of the suffering of dairy cows, who lead truncated lives characterized by exploitation only to have their milk end up in the trash.   One would expect Big Dairy to be opposed to the ADD SOY Act, but another foe is making progress a challenge: the widespread misinformation about soy and the false beliefs about its safety.   In this episode, Dr. Lakshman “Lucky” Mulpuri, a medical advisor for Animal Wellness Action, visits the show to debunk the common myths impeding broader adoption of soy milk as an alternative to cow milk. He is chief executive of PlantsNourish and former president of the Plant-Based Nutrition Group (PBNG). He also developed and implemented the first-ever mandatory plant-based medical curriculum for first-year medical students at Wayne State. His work has been featured in VegNews, Forks Over Knives, and numerous newspapers and television stations.   Dr. Lucky produced a fact sheet for Animal Wellness Action on the truth about soy milk. You can view it here: https://bit.ly/Soy_Truth.     The Animal Wellness podcast is produced by Animal Wellness Action and the Center for a Humane Economy. It focuses on improving the lives of animals in the United States and abroad through legislation and by influencing businesses to create a more humane economy. For too long, society has accepted the distortion and misinformation Big Dairy feeds us. So Switch4Good exists to set the record straight, for the sake of human health, food justice, and the future of our planet. They work with health experts, athletes, social justice warriors, enlightened policy-makers, and progressive corporations to promote ethical lifestyles and widespread behavioral change related to how we eat. The Switch4Good podcast is hosted by Olympic medalist, Dotsie Bausch and former Baywatch actress, Alexandra Paul. I believe so much in the work they're doing that I wanted to share one of their podcast episodes with you today, especially as it relates to athletic performance.  Ryan Duff is a medical student and a recreational ultra-endurance runner, but more impressive than his academic and athletic achievements is his story of overcoming an eating disorder. Dotsie and Alexandra talk with Ryan about his struggle from anorexia to binge eating, and how he's overcome those hurdles by shifting to a plant-based diet.  They discuss the underlying causes of eating disorders, coping mechanisms, and the holistic impact of a whole-goof plant-based diet on your physical and mental health. As he says in the interview, “I don't run to eat. Alan Lewis is the VP of Government Affairs, Stakeholder Relations, and Organic Compliance at Natural Grocers. His 2019 talk at the first annual Real Organic Symposium blew a lot of minds, as he described the massive consolidation in the natural foods industry, which has been boiled down to two distributors. In addition to his roles with IFOAM North America, the  Non-GMO Project, and the Organic + Natural Health Association,  Alan serves on the Real Organic Advisory Board. To watch a video version of this podcast with access to the full transcript and links relevant to our conversation, please visit:https://www.realorganicproject.org/alan-lewis-corruption-anticompetitive-big-dairy-episode-sixty-eightThe Real Organic Podcast is hosted by Dave Chapman and Linley Dixon, engineered by Brandon StCyr, and edited and produced by Jenny Prince. The Real Organic Project is a farmer-led movement working towards certifying 1,000 farms across the United States this year. Our add-on food label distinguishes soil-grown fruits and vegetables from hydroponically-raised produce, and pasture-raised meat, milk, and eggs from products harvested from animals in horrific confinement (CAFOs - confined animal feeding operations). To find a Real Organic farm near you, please visit:https://www.realorganicproject.org/farmsWe believe that the organic standards, with their focus on soil health, biodiversity, and animal welfare were written as they should be, but that the current lack of enforcement of those standards is jeopardizing the ability for small farms who adhere to the law to stay in business. The lack of enforcement is also jeopardizing the overall health of the customers who support the organic movement; customers who are not getting what they pay for at market but still paying a premium price. And the lack of enforcement is jeopardizing the very cycles (water, air, nutrients) that Earth relies upon to provide us all with a place to live, by pushing extractive, chemical agriculture to the forefront. If you like what you hear and are feeling inspired, we would love for you to join our movement by becoming one of our 1,000  Real Friends:https://www.realorganicproject.org/real-organic-friends/To read our weekly newsletter (which might just be the most forwarded newsletter on the internet!) and get firsthand news about what's happening with organic food, farming and policy, please subscribe here:https://www.realorganicproject.org/email/

In their fight against the alternative milk and nut-milk industries, Big Dairy has been lobbying Congress and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to reserve the term “milk” for fluids obtained through “lacteal secretion” — and the FDA looks like it may enforce a stricter definition for “milk” soon. Chief among the National Federation of Milk Producers' concerns are that consumers are “being misled about the nutritional content of plant-based imitators relative to real dairy products.” Award-winning food writer Corby Kummer joined Boston Public Radio on Monday to share his thoughts on the situation. “I think it's ridiculous,” Kummer said. “I think anybody who buys almond milk understands it's not cow's milk.” In the wide-ranging interview, Kummer also discussed the latest news from the nation's baby formula shortage, and talked about the lack of nutrition education in medical schools. Kummer is executive director of the Food and Society policy program at the Aspen Institute, a senior editor at The Atlantic and a senior lecturer at the Tufts Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy.

#063: Dairy farmer Earl Ransom, who owns and operates Strafford Creamery along with his wife Amy,  recalls the history of the organic milk market in Vermont. Here he shares the good price times, the bad price times, and how corporate interests and ownership came in and engineered the market to their liking. Although Earl and Amy bottle their milk on the farm and sell direct to customers, they are not immune to the market trends that keep prices low and farmers underpaid.Earl Ransom grew up at Strafford Creamery, a 600-acre organic dairy farm that produces 6 types of milk in glass bottles, including chocolate and old-fashioned cream line, half-and-half, and a dozen (very popular!) ice cream flavors. Breeding, tending, and milking Guernsey cows, Earl and his wife Amy are well known throughout the Vermont organic dairy farming community for their knowledge of cow care, rotational grazing, and crop management. To watch a video version of this podcast with access to the full transcript and links relevant to our conversation, please visit:https://www.realorganicproject.org/earl-ransom-big-dairy-exploits-small-farms-episode-sixty-threeThe Real Organic Podcast is hosted by Dave Chapman and Linley Dixon, engineered by Brandon StCyr, and edited and produced by Jenny Prince. The Real Organic Project is a farmer-led movement working towards certifying 1,000 farms across the United States this year. Industrial animal agriculture is fueling the climate crisis, with food and farming systems accounting for one third of global greenhouse gas emissions. And while big dairy operations are contributing to climate change, they are also impacting the health and economies of rural communities throughout the United States and globally. And that is the model that Fair Trade USA has dubbed “fair trade dairy.” In this episode, Shefali Sharma of the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy joins us to discuss the role of Big Dairy in fueling the climate crisis and hollowing out rural communities. She explains the need for transparency and real policy solutions to address industrial agriculture's emissions – and protect the planet for future generations. Topics covered include: How industrial animal agriculture is contributing to climate change. How Big Meat and Dairy hide their climate impact behind a lack of transparency. Manure lagoons, dead zones, and other environmental consequences for rural communities. “Net Zero” and other tricky language Big Dairy corporations use to hide their real impact on the planet.  How environmental sustainability is a pillar of how fair trade farmer organizations represent their movement - and how it's completely omitted from the new “fair trade dairy” label. The disproportionate impacts of the climate crisis on communities of color in the U.S. and globally. Regulating emissions, reducing production, and other solutions to address industrial animal agriculture's disproportionate impact on our planet.  Why worker-led solutions are a key component of climate justice. False solutions to look out for in the news, and in the grocery store. In today's show, Kate and Emma talk about the rise of alternative milks! We talk about the decline of traditional milk consumption in the United States coupled with a surging demand for plant-based alternatives. We look into the health questions surrounding dairy including topics like calcium, bone health, and lactose intolerance. We then investigate lobbying efforts to promote Big Dairy and current legislation focusing on banning plant-based milks from being labeled as “milk.” Kate and Emma finish off today's episode by speaking about the sustainability/ethical issues with dairy vs. water-intensive alternatives like almond milk, leaving you with our advice on how to navigate food “choices” in a warming climate.
